So, imagine you're standing on a street anywhere in America

وای دابنێ لە هەر شوێنێکی ئەمریکا لەسەر جادەیەک وەستاویت

and a Japanese man comes up to you and says,

،وە پیاوێکی یابانی دێت بۆ لات و دەڵێت

"Excuse me, what is the name of this block?"

"بمبورە ، ناوی ئەم بلۆکە چی یە "

And you say, "I'm sorry, well, this is Oak Street, that's Elm Street.

تۆش ئەڵێیت، بمبورە، بەڵام، ئەمە" . شەقامی ئؤوکە ، ئەوەش شەقامی ئێڵمە

This is 26th, that's 27th."

". ئەمە ٢٦ ەمینە ، ئەوە ٢٧ ە مینە

He says, "OK, but what is the name of that block?"

ئەو دەڵێت ، "باشە ، بەڵام " ناوی ئەو بلۆکە چی یە ؟

You say, "Well, blocks don't have names.

تۆش ئەڵێی ،"باشە، بلۆکەکان ناویان نی یە

Streets have names; blocks are just the

شەقامەکان ناویان هەیە ؛ بلۆکەکان تەنها

unnamed spaces in between streets."

He leaves, a little confused and disappointed.

بە کەمێ سەرلێشێواوی و بێهیواییەوە ئەڕوا

So, now imagine you're standing on a street, anywhere in Japan,

بەڵام، ئێستا وایدابنێ لە هەر شوێنێکی جاپان ،لە سەر جادە وەستاویت

you turn to a person next to you and say,

ڕوو دەکەیتە کەسی تەنیشتت و پێی ئەڵێی

"Excuse me, what is the name of this street?"

"بمبورە ، ناوی ئەم شەقامە چی یە "

They say, "Oh, well that's Block 17 and this is Block 16."

. پێت ئەڵێن ،"ئۆو،ئەمە بلۆکی ١٧ یە "وە ئەمەش بلۆکی ١٦ یە

And you say, "OK, but what is the name of this street?"

تۆش ئەڵێی ،"باشە، بەڵام " ناوی ئەم شەقامە چی یە ؟

And they say, "Well, streets don't have names.

پێت ئەڵێن ، " باشە، شەقامەکان ناویان نی یە

Blocks have names.

.بلۆکەکان ناویان زۆرە

Just look at Google Maps here. There's Block 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19.

.تەنها سەیری نەخشەی گۆگڵ بکە لێرە .بلۆکی ١٩،١٨،١٧،١٦،١٥،١٤

All of these blocks have names,

.هەموو ئەم بلۆکانە ناویان هەیە

and the streets are just the unnamed spaces in between the blocks.

وە هەموو شەقامەکان تەنها .بۆشایی بێناوی نێوان بلۆکەکانن

And you say then, "OK, then how do you know your home address?"

،تۆش دواتر ئەڵێی،" باشە "ئەی چۆن ناونیشانی ماڵەوەت ئەزانیت ؟

He said, "Well, easy, this is District Eight.

.ئەڵێت " باشە " ئاسانە ، ئەمە ناوچەی هەشتە

There's Block 17, house number one."

".ئەوە بلۆکی ١٧ ، خانووی ژمارە یەک

You say, "OK, but walking around the neighborhood,

ئەڵێیت، " باشە ،بەڵام بە دەوری ئەو هاوسێیانە

I noticed that the house numbers don't go in order."

تێبینیم کرد ژمارەی خانووەکان ڕیزبەند نین

He says, "Of course they do. They go in the order in which they were built.

.ئەویش دەڵێ، "بەدڵنیاییەوە ڕیزبەندن .بەپێی کاتی بنیاتیان ڕیزبەندکراون

The first house ever built on a block is house number one.

یەکەمین خانوو لە بلۆکێک دا بنیات .بنرێ ئەوە خانووی ژمارە یەکە

The second house ever built is house number two.

دووەمین خانوو لە بلۆکێک دا بنیات . بنرێ ئەوە خانووی ژمارە دووە

Third is house number three. It's easy. It's obvious."

سێهەمیان خانووی ژمارە سێ یە " .ڕوونە. وە ئاسانە

So, I love that sometimes we need to

بۆیە، حەزدەکەم هەندێ جار پێویستە

go to the opposite side of the world

بچینە دیوەکەی تری جیهان

to realize assumptions we didn't even know we had,

،بۆ هەست کردن بە خەمڵێنراوەکان ،کە تەنانەت نەماندەزانی هەشن

and realize that the opposite of them may also be true.

وە هەروەها وایدابنێین .کە دەشێ دیوەکەی تریان ڕاست بێت

So, for example, there are doctors in China

بۆ نمونە ، دکتۆرەکانی چینن

who believe that it's their job to keep you healthy.

کە بڕوایان وایە ئیشیان پاراستنی تەندروستیتە

So, any month you are healthy you pay them,

،بۆیە، هەر مانگێ تەندروست بیت پارەیان ئەدەیتێ

and when you're sick you don't have to pay them because they failed

وە هەرکاتێ نەخۆش بوویت پارەیان نادەیتێ چونکە سەرکەوتوو نەبوون

at their job. They get rich when you're healthy, not sick.

لە ئیشەکانیان ،ئەو کاتە دەوڵەمەند ئەبن .کە تەندروست بیت، نەک نەخۆش

In most music, we think of the "one"

"لە زۆرینەی میوزیکەکان تەرکیز دەکەینە سەر "یەک

as the downbeat, the beginning of the musical phrase: one, two, three, four.

ئاماژەی ژەنینی پارجە میوزیکەکە؛ .یەک، دوو، سێ، چوار

But in West African music, the "one"

.بەڵام لە میوزیکی ڕۆئاوای ئەفریقی ئەو " یەک " ە

is thought of as the end of the phrase,

،کۆتایی ئاماژەیە

like the period at the end of a sentence.

.وەک خاڵی کۆتایی ڕستە وایە

So, you can hear it not just in the phrasing, but the way they count off their music:

،لەبەرئەوە ، نەک تەنها لە ئاماژەپێکردن :بەڵکو لە کاتی ژماردنی چەپڵەکانی مۆسیقاش دا

two, three, four, one.

دوو ، سێ ، چوار ، یەک

And this map is also accurate.

.وە بەهەمان شێوە ئەو نەخشەیەش ڕاستە

There's a saying that whatever true thing you can say about India,

قسەیەک هەیە کە دەڵێ هەر چیەکی پێت ڕاستە سەبارەت بە هیندستان

the opposite is also true.

So, let's never forget, whether at TED, or anywhere else,

that whatever brilliant ideas you have or hear,
