I was stunned.

I worried if I opened my mouth to disagree,

I'd say something crazy.

And we all know the price of crazy at pickup.

You never get invited to any playdates.

So I bit my tongue.

She was the smartest and sweetest mom.

And I remember thinking,

"How do you know your four-year-old will never be good at math?"

Can you imagine if we thought the same thing in reading?

تۆ دشێی هزرێن خوە بکەی، ئەگەر ئەم هەمان هزر د خواندنێ دا بکەین؟

If a kid struggled and we said, "Ah, she's just not a reading kid."

ئەگەر زاروکەک نەشیا، و مە گووت “ئاهـ، ئەو نەزاروکا خواندنێ یە.”

And then we took away all the challenging books

و لدویڤدا مە هەمی پەرتوك ژێ دویرکرن

and writing assignments for the rest of her school years.

We'd never do that.

ئەم چ جاران وەناکەین.

We'd never be OK labeling some of the kids "reading kids,"

and leaving the rest illiterate.

و یێن دیتر نەخواندەڤان بهێلین.

But that's exactly what we do in math.

ئەڤ چەندەیە یا ئەم د بیرکاریێ دا دکەین.

I'm a math learning expert and an education technologist,

من شەهرەزای یا دفێرکرنا بیرکاریێ دا هەی و ئەز تەکنیکارا پەروەردەی مە

and believe it or not, I was not always a math kid.

But for the last 12 years,

I have observed millions of students complete billions of math problems

I’ve learned one important thing:

We are asking the wrong question in math learning.

Instead of asking who can learn math,

we should be asking, how do you teach math?

Because when we ask “who,”

چونکی دەمێ پرسیارکەین “کی،”

we imply that math learning is some rare genetic ability,

ئەم ئاماژێ پێدەین، فێربوونا بیرکاریێ شیانێن کێم یێن بوماوەی نە.

but it's not.

بەلێ ئەو بخوە نەخێر.

We have piles of data that tell us we can all build a math mind,

مە کومەکا ئاماران یا هەی دبێژنە مە ئەم هەمی دشێن مێشکەکێ بیرکاری ئاڤاکەین

and we all need a math mind.

و ئەم هەمی پێتڤی ب مێشکەکێ بیرکاری نە.

And so I have four steps to offer

و بڤی شێوەی من چوار پێنگاڤێن هەین بێژم

that begin to answer the question,

ژ بەرسڤدانا پرسیارێ دەستپێدکەت،

how do we build a math mind

چەوا ئەم دێ مێشکەکێ بیرکاری ئاڤاکەین

and hopefully put an end to this labeling nonsense

ب هیڤیا بدوماهیك ئینانا ڤێ بێ رامانیێ

once and for all.

بۆ جارا ئێکێ و هەتا هەتایێ.

Step one: believe.

پێنگاڤا ئێکێ: باوەری.

Remember when I said I wasn't always a math kid?

لبیراتەبیت، دەمێ من گووتی ئەز ب بیرکاریێ زیرەک نەبووم.

I was in sixth grade.

ئەز ل پولا شەشێ بووم

I had just transferred schools

شنویکا من قوتابخانە گهوریبوون

and it was in math class that I fell apart.

و ئەز ب بابەتێ بیرکاریێ دکەفتم.

I had no friends in math class,

من هەڤال د پولا بیرکاریێ دا نەبوون،

and the kids who were thriving were a group of boys

و ئەو زاروکێن بسەردکەفتین کومەکا کوران بوو

who wouldn't talk to me.

یێن دگەل من نەدئاخفتین

But I would not talk to them either.

بەلێ من ژی دگەل وان نەدئاخفت.

(Laughter)

Because they were grody.

چونکی ئەو دباش نەبوون.

One day after a test,

روژەکێ، لدویڤ ئەزمونێ،

my teacher called me over to his desk and he said,

ماموستایێ من ئەز گازی کرمە دەڤ مێزا خوە و گووت،

"If you try your very best,

“ئەگەر تۆ هەمی یانێن خوە بمەزێخێ،

you could be just as good as the boys."

تۆ دێ وەکی کوران زیرەك بی.”

Eek!

ئـوهـ!

Not an ideal thing to say to a little girl.

تشتەکێ باش نینە تۆ وەبێژیە کچەکا بچویك.

And the gender gaps in math persist today.

و هەتا نوکە جیاوازیا رەگەزان ببیرکاریێ دا هەیە.

But it didn't matter because my heart exploded.

بەلێ یا گرنگ نەبوو، چونکی کەیفا من گەلەك هات

The coolest teacher I had ever met said that I could succeed.

باشترین ماموستا من دیتی گووت ئەز دشێم بسەرکەفم.

Hyperbole, maybe,

دبیت زێدەروی بیت،

but I think his words changed the course of my life.

بەلێ پەیڤێن وی ژیانا من گوهوری.

Because he believed,

he started a powerful chain reaction.

Because he believed,

I built up the courage to ask for extra help.

بۆ من دەرفەت دروست بوو داخوازا پتر هاریکاریێ بکەم.

And with that extra help, I did the extra work.

و دگەل هاریکاریا زێدەتر من زێدەتر کارکر.

And with that courage, extra help and extra work,

و دگەل وێ پشتەڤانیل، و هاریکاریا زێدەتر و کارێ زێدەتر،

I became a math kid.

ئەز بیرکاریێ زیرەك بووم.

And along the way, I learned my experience was pretty normal.

و بدرێژاهییا رێکێ، من زانی راهێنان دانا من تشتەکێ نورمالە.

All kids, even the math kids,

هەمی زاروك، و هەتا یێن بیرکاریێ زیرەك،

fall behind, struggle or feel math anxiety.

دکەفن، هەڤرکیێ دکەن و هەست ب نیگەرانیێ دکەن د بیرکاریێ دا.

But the difference for those kids is someone believes.

And so they do the work and they catch up.

Actually, in any subject you learn, you can fall behind,

but that's usually a signal to work harder.

بەلێ هەمی دەمان ئەڤە هێمایە تۆ پتر خوە بزاڤێ بکەی.

But in math, that same signal is that you don't have what it takes,

بەلێ د بیرکاریێ دا، ئەو هێما یێ تە خاسیەتێن پێدڤی یێن سەرکەفتنێ نینن.

and we give up and seal our fate.

و ئەم دەستان داهێلین و خوە دەستەسەردکەین.

And so that's why the first step is to believe.

ژبەر ڤی ئەگەری ئێکەم پێنگاڤ باوەری یە.

And the second step is to understand.

و پێنگاڤا دووێ تێگەهشتنە

Don't just memorize math,

.نە بتنێ بیرکاریێ ژبەر کە،

understand it and use pictures.

تێبگەهە و وێنا بکاربینە.

Let's say you have to take a reading test

بلا بێژین تە تاقیکرنا خواندنێ یا هەی

and you memorize 200 words to take the test.

و تۆ 200 پەیڤان ژبەردکەی داکو تاقیکرنێ بکەی

You don't actually know how to read,

و تۆ نزانی چەوا د خوینن،

but let's say you get an A on the test.

بەلێ دابێژین تە A ئینا د تاقیکرنێ دا.

And then naturally, a few weeks later,

و لدویڤدا بشێوەکێ سروشتی پشتی چەند حەفتیان

you'd forget a lot of what you'd memorized,

تە گەلەك ژ وان پەیڤێن ژبەرکرین ژبیرکرن

but with it you would forget how to read.

بەلێ دگەل هندێ، تۆ دێ ژبیرکەی دێ چەوا خوینی.

Terrifying, right?

نەباشە، مانە راستە؟

And that's what math class feels like for a lot of kids.

ئەڤە تێگەهێ بیرکاریێ یە ل دەڤ گەلەك زاروکان.

Think about how you can grab any book off a shelf

هزرکە چەوا شێی هەر پەرتوکەکا تەبڤێت هەلبژێری

and feel calm and confident,

و یێ ئارام و پشت راستی،

because you can read it.

چونکی تۆ دشێی بخوینی.

What if your math learning felt like that,

چەوایە ئەگەر ب بیرکاریێ ژی بهەمان شێوە بی،

where everything clicked into place and your math learning was durable?

دەمێ هەمی تشت د کەفنە جهێ خوە و فێربوونا تەیا بیرکاریێ یاباش بیت.

Let's take a big idea in math: ratios

دا هزرەکا مەزن ژ بیرکاریێ وەرگرین: رێژە

and proportional reasoning.

و هاورێژە

One is to two or three is to one.

ئێك بۆ دوو یان سێ بۆ ئێك.

More scary math to memorize?

نەخوشترین بابەتێ بیرکاریێ بۆ ژبەرکرنێ

No way.

ستەمە

I can use a picture from my everyday life

ئەز دشێم وێنەکی ژ ژیانا خوە یا روژانە بکاربینم.

to understand ratios.

دا د ڕێژێ بگەهم.

Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

ڕوینێ فستەقێ و مرەبا

My twins have very different taste preferences.

جێمکێن من حەز ل تامێن گەلەك جیاواز دکەن

One likes his sandwich with one spoon of jelly

ئێك حەز ژ نانێ ب کاچکەکێ مرەبایێ

and two spoons of peanut butter,

و دوو کاچکێن ڕوینێ فستەقێ دکەت،

and the other likes his sandwich with three spoons of jelly

و یێ دیتر، حەز ژ نانێ ب سێ کاچکێن مرەبایێ

and one spoon of peanut butter.

و ئێکێ ڕوینێ فستەقێ دکەت

Very different ratios, very different sandwiches.

ڕێژێن گەلەک جیاواز نانێن گەلەك جیاواز

Math can and should make sense.

بیرکاری دشێت و دڤێت یا ڕاماندار بیت.

Now let's take a look at this problem.

نوکە دا بەرێ خوە بدەینە ڤێ پرسیارێ.

Which fraction has a value closest to one half?

بەهایێ کیژ کەرتی نزیکترە بۆ ئێك لسەر دوو؟

Two halves,

دوو لسەر دووێ،

five eighths,

پێنچ ل سەر هەشتێ،

one sixth or one fifth?

ئێك ل سەر شەش یان ئێك ل سەر پێنچ؟

Now a lot of us have been trained

گەلەک ژ مە یێن هاتینە فێرکرن

to just jump right in and start calculating.

باز بدەین و دەست بهەژمارتنێ بکەین.

We're looking for a common denominator across these fractions.

ئەم یێن ل ژێرەکێ هاوبەش دگەرین دناڤ ڤان کەرتان دا.

And because that's kind of hard to do for eight, six, five and two in your head,

و چونکی یا بزەحمەتە ببینی بۆ هەشت، شەش، پێنج و ودووێ دسەرێ خوەدا.

you might even reach for a piece of paper.

دبیتن خوە تۆ بەرپەرەکی بینی.

But there is another way to get started,

بەلێ ڕێکەکا دیتر ژی هەی دەسپێبکەی

which is to pause and to understand.

ئەوە کو تۆ ب راوەستی و هزر تێدا بکەی

You might imagine, or draw a rectangle

تۆ دشێی هزر د لاکێشەکێ دا بکەی یان وێنەبکەی.

and shade in one part

و پارچەکێ ژێ رەنگ بکەی

and imagine, what is one half?

و هزربکەی ئێك لسەر دوو چییە؟

And then what is two halves?

و ل دویڤدا دوو نیڤ چییە؟

Well, that's the exact same rectangle.

باشە، ئەڤە هەمان لاکێشەیە

But now I've shaded in both parts.

بەلێ نوکە من هەردوو پارچە ڕەنگکرن.

So two halves is one whole.

و وەسان دوو پارچە دبیتە ئێکا تەمام.

And pretty soon from imagining or drawing these rectangles,

و لنزیک پشتی هزرکرن یان وێنەکرناڤێ لاکێشێ،

it would become obvious

دێ ئاشکرا بیت

that five eights is the only reasonable option.

پێنچ لسەر هەشتێ بەرسڤا ژ هەمیان گونجایترە.

Because sometimes the reward of understanding

چونکی هندەک دەمان خەلاتێ هزرکرنێ

is not having to calculate at all.

هەژمارتن نینە ب چ شێوان.

Now, this question was given to American fourth graders

ئەڤ پرسیارە یا قوتابیێن پولا چوارێ یێن ئەمریکی زوون

on a national test,

د تاقیکرنەکا نشتیمانی دا،

and 73 percent got this question wrong.

73 ژ سەدێ خەلەت بەرسڤ دا.

The most commonly picked answer?

پرسیارا ژهەمیان پتر هاتییە هەلبژارتن؟

Two halves.

دوو ل سەر دووێ بوو

The most wrong answer possible.

خەلەترین بەرسڤ.

Because that's what happens when we memorize math.

چونکی ئەها ئەڤە رویدەت دەمێ بیرکاریێ ژبەردکەین.

And so just like we have to make math meaningful,

و وەکی کا چەوا رامانەکێ دەینە بیرکاریێ،

step three is we have to make math fun.

پێنگاڤا سیێ دڤێت ئەم خوشیێ ژ بیرکاریێ چێکەین.

Make math practice fun.

ڕاهێنانێن بیرکاریێ خوش کەین

Math practice.

ڕاهێنانێن بیرکاریێ

I know what you're thinking.

ئەز دزانم تۆ نوکە چ هزردکەی.

A worksheet with 50 tedious, long division problems.

بەرپەرەك ب 50 پرسیارێن دابەشێن درێژ.

(Laughter)

(دەنگێ کەنیێ)

But we've known for years,

بەلێ ئەڤە چەند سالە ئەم دزانین.

in reading, if we want kids to learn it and to love it,

د خواندنێ، ئەگەر مە بڤێت زاروك فێربیت و حەز ژێبکەت.

we need to appeal to their interests.

دڤێت ئەم سەرنجا وی براکێشین.

Fantasy novels with elves,

ڕومانێن خوش دگەل کورتەبالان

graphic novels with spies.

رامانێن وێنێن سیخوران تێدا

What's that in math?

ئەڤە د بیرکاریێ دا چییە؟

Games.

یارینە.

Card games, board games,

یاریا کارتان، یاریا بوردێ

real-world games you just make up on the fly.

یاریێن راستەقینە یێن تۆ دەمێ ڤالادا دروستدکەی.

And just like we're told to read to our kids for 20 minutes a day,

و وەکی گوتیە مە 20 خولەکا بۆ زاروکێن خوە بخوینین ڕوژانە

play games often.

گەلەک جاران یاریان بکە.

When my twins were little, a favorite was the game Battleship,

دەمێ زاروکێن من د بچویك، یاریا خوشتر بۆ وان گەمیا شەری بوو.

where the objective is to sink the opponent's ship.

یا ئارمانجا سەرەکی تێدا بنئاڤکرنا گەمیا دوژمنی بوو.

But also an engaging application of the coordinate plane.

بەلێ دیسان ئەپەکا سەرنج راکێش بوو لسەر ئاستێ ڕویدانان.

If you get a hit on E5,

ئەگەر تە دەستێ خوە ل E5 دابا،

you're quickly thinking of which coordinate to call out next.

تە بلەز هزر د هەلبژارتنا دویڤرا دکر

You can also just play simple games that you make up in the real world.

تۆ دشێی یاریێن سادە بکەی یێن تۆ دشێی دجیهانا راستەقینەدا دروستدکەی

When our twins were little,

دەمێ جێمکێ مە یێ بچویك

we'd give them ten bucks each at the farmer's market and we'd say,

مە هەر ئێکی دەهـ دولار دانێ و دهنارتنە بازارێ جوتیاران و دابێژینێ

"Make sure you count the change before you hand over the money.

“بەرمای بزانە بەری تۆ پارەیان بدەی.

Otherwise, how do you know you're not getting ripped off?"

ئەگەر نە، چەوا دێ زانی تۆ یێ هاتییە سەردابرن؟

And a tip with all these games:

و ئاموژگاریەك دگەل ڤان هەمی یاریان

don't make them a math lesson.

وان نەکە وانا بیرکاریێ

Just like you wouldn't stop reading a book

کا چەوا تۆ د خواندنا پەرتوکێ دا ناراوەستی

to underline the subject and the verb with your kids,

دا هێلێ لبن بکەر و کاری بدانی دگەل زاروکێن خوە،

just have fun

بەس خوشیێ ژێ ببە

and let your kids have fun too.

و بهێلە زاروکێن تەژی خوشیێ ژێ ببەن.

And that brings me to the fourth and final step.

و وەسا ئەز د هێمە پێنگاڤا چارێو یا دوماهیێ

Give math a second chance.

بەختەکێ دیتر بدە بیرکاریێ

You might love it.

ڕەنگە تۆ حەز ژێ بکەی.

Have you ever noticed how the math kids giggle about math?

تە جارەکێ تێبینیا زاروکێن زیرەک کریە چەند خوشیێ دبەن؟

They love it.

ئەو حەز ژ بیرکاریێ دکەن

They love the power and the beauty of math.

ئەو حەز ژ هێز و جوانیا بیرکاریێ دکەن

And it's not because they're made of different genetic stuff.

و نەژئەگەرێ ئەوان هندەک بوماوەیێن جیاواز یێن هەین

It's because somebody believed in them.

چونکی کەسەکێ باوەری ب وان هەبوو.

And they learned math

و ئەو فێری بیرکاریێ بوون

so they understood and they had fun.

و لدویڤدا ئەو تێگەهشتن و خوشی ژێ دیت.

So they practiced enough to build a math mind.

و وان گەلەک ڕاهێنان کرن هەتا مێشکەکێ بیرکاری ئاڤاکری.

And maybe that wasn't your experience growing up.

دبیت سەربورا تە ئەڤە نەبیت.

And that's OK.

و چ ئاریشە نینە

We can all give math a second chance now for ourselves and for our kids.

ئەم هەمی دشێن بەختەکێ دیتر بدەینە بیرکاریێ ژبۆمە و زاروکێن مە.

Look, we all know

بەرێ خوە بدێ، ئەم هەمی دزانین

that it's pretty hard for our kids to like something if we hate it.

گەلەک یا بزەحمەتە بۆ زاروکێ مە حەز ل تشتەکی بکەت و کەربێن مە لێڤەبن.

And the world of math can be mean and exclusive.

و دێ جیهانا بیرکاریێ بێ ڕومەت و نەخوش بیت.

But it can change when we make a decision,

بەلێ دبیت بهێتە گهورین دەمێ ئەم بریارێ دەین

when we see the power and the beauty of math.

دە؟ێ ئەم هێز و جوانیا بیرکاریێ دبینین.

And when we do,

دەمێ ئەم ئەنجامدەین ڤی کاری،

no one can take that from us.

کەسەك نەشێت ژ مە وەرگریت

Kierkegaard once talked about two kinds of love.

کێرکەدگارد جارەکێ باس ل دوو جورێن حەزژێکرنێ کر.

Spontaneous love and true love.

حەزژێکرنا هەرەمەکی و یا راستی

Spontaneous love just happens to you.

یا هەرەمەکی بسەرێ تە دهێت

You don't have any control over it.

تە چ کونترول ل سەر نینە

But true love is something different.

بەلێ حەزژێکرنا ڕاستی تشتەکێ جیاوازە.

It's where you decide.

ئەوە دەمێ بریارێ ددەی.

And so the change in you is to approach math with the plan,

و گهورینا لسەر تە پێتڤی، ب پلان سەرەدەریێ دگەل بیرکاریێ بکەی.

with the knowledge

دگەل زانیاریان

and with the patience that you will get to true love.

دگەل بهێنفرەهییا تۆ دێ ژ حەزژێکرنا راستەقینە بدەستخوڤە ئینی.

Because in math, true love is waiting for you.

چونکی د بیرکاریێ دا، حەزژێکرنا ڕاستەقینە یا ل هیڤیا تە.
