So let's watch a movement happen, start to finish,

and dissect some lessons from it.

First, of course you know,

첫째로, 물론 여러분도 아시다시피, 리더는 배짱이 필요합니다.

a leader needs the guts to stand out and be ridiculed.

주목받게 되고 또 조롱거리가 되니까요.

What he's doing is so easy to follow.

그렇지만 저 남자가 하고 있는 건 따라하기 아주 쉽죠.

Here's his first follower with a crucial role;

여기서 중요한 역할을 하는 첫번째 추종자가 나타납니다.

he's going to show everyone else how to follow.

저 남자가 다른 사람들에게 어떻게 따라하는지를 보여주죠.

Now, notice that the leader embraces him as an equal.

리더가 저 남자를 동등한 상대로 받아들이는게 보이시죠.

Now it's not about the leader anymore;

더 이상 리더가 아닙니다;

it's about them, plural.

그들, 복수죠.

Now, there he is calling to his friends.

저 남자가 이제는 친구들을 불러 모으고 있네요.

Now, if you notice that the first follower

첫 번째 추종자가 사실

is actually an underestimated form of leadership in itself.

과소평가된 형태의 리더쉽이라는 걸 눈치채셨을 겁니다.

It takes guts to stand out like that.

저렇게 눈에 띄기 위해서는 배짱이 두둑해야 합니다.

The first follower is what transforms a lone nut into a leader.

첫 번째 추종자는 한 외로운 미치광이를

리더로 변모시키죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

(Applause)

(박수)

And here comes a second follower.

두 번째 추종자가 오네요.

Now it's not a lone nut, it's not two nuts --

이제 외로운 미치광이도 아니고, 두 명의 미치광이도 아닙니다.

three is a crowd, and a crowd is news.

세 명은 하나의 집단이고, 집단은 뉴스거리죠.

So a movement must be public.

운동이란 건 대중적이어야만 합니다.

It's important to show not just the leader, but the followers,

리더를 보여주는 것이 아니라, 추종자들을 보여주는 것이 중요하죠.

because you find that new followers emulate the followers, not the leader.

새로운 추종자들은

리더가 아닌 추종자들을 따라하기 때문이죠.

Now, here come two more people, and immediately after,

여기에 두 명의 사람이 더 오고, 바로 뒤에,

three more people.

세 명의 사람이 더 붙습니다.

Now we've got momentum. This is the tipping point.

이제 가속도가 붙게 되죠. 이게 바로 전환점입니다.

Now we've got a movement.

결국 하나의 운동이 됩니다.

(Laughter)

So, notice that, as more people join in,

알아차리셨겠지만, 많은 사람들이 참여할수록

it's less risky.

덜 위험합니다.

So those that were sitting on the fence before

그래서 그 전까진 방관하고 있던 사람들도, 지금은 그럴 필요가 없는거죠.

now have no reason not to.

They won't stand out, they won't be ridiculed,

돋보이지도 않고

조롱거리가 되지도 않습니다.

but they will be part of the in-crowd if they hurry.

서두르면 집단 내 핵심 그룹의 일원이 될 수도 있죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

So, over the next minute,

자, 앞으로 몇 분간

you'll see all of those that prefer to stick with the crowd

여러분은 저 사람들 모두가 집단을 고수하려는 걸 보게 되실 겁니다.

because eventually they would be ridiculed for not joining in.

결국엔 참여하지 않으면

조롱받게 되기때문이죠.

And that's how you make a movement.

이게 운동을 일으키는 방법입니다.

But let's recap some lessons from this.

여기서 몇 가지 교훈을 요약해보죠.

So first, if you are the type,

첫째로, 여러분이 만약에 혼자서 춤추던

like the shirtless dancing guy that is standing alone,

저 웃통 벗은 남자와 같은 유형이라면

remember the importance of nurturing your first few followers as equals

초기 소수의 추종자를 동등하게

돌봐야 한다는 것의 중요성을 기억하세요.

so it's clearly about the movement, not you.

그러면 확실히 운동에 관한 것이지, 여러분에 관한 것이 아니죠.

Okay, but we might have missed the real lesson here.

그렇지만 우리는 진정한 교훈을 지나쳤는지도 모르겠네요.

The biggest lesson, if you noticed --

가장 큰 교훈은, 여러분도 깨달으셨다시피 -

did you catch it? --

이해하셨나요 -- 리더쉽이란게

is that leadership is over-glorified.

지나치게 미화되었다는 겁니다.

Yes, it was the shirtless guy who was first,

네, 웃통 벗은 남자가 최초였으니,

그가 모든 공로를 인정받을테죠.

and he'll get all the credit,

but it was really the first follower

그러나 외로운 미치광이를 리더로 변모시킨 사람은

that transformed the lone nut into a leader.

사실 첫 번째 추종자입니다.

So, as we're told that we should all be leaders,

우리가 모두 리더가 되어야 한다는 것은

정말로 효과적이지 못합니다.

that would be really ineffective.

If you really care about starting a movement,

여러분이 정말로 운동을 일으키려고 생각한다면,

따를 수 있는 용기를 가지세요.

have the courage to follow and show others how to follow.

그리고 다른 사람들에게 어떻게 따라야 하는지를 보여주세요.

And when you find a lone nut doing something great,

훌륭한 일을 하고 있는 외로운 미치광이를 발견하면,

have the guts to be the first one to stand up and join in.
