And it would be easy to implement

and inexpensive.

The mathematics curriculum that we have

အခုကျွန်တော်တို့မှာ ရှိနေတဲ့ သင်္ချာသင်ရိုးညွှန်းတမ်းဟာ

is based on a foundation of arithmetic and algebra.

ဂဏန်းသင်္ချာနဲ့ အက္ခရာသင်္ချာတို့ရဲ့ အုတ်မြစ်ပေါ်မှာ အခြေတည်ထားပါတယ်

And everything we learn after that

အဲဒီနောက်ပိုင်းမှာ ကျွန်တော်တို့ သင်ယူကြတဲ့ အရာအားလုံးက

is building up towards one subject.

ဘာသာရပ်တစ်ခုစီသို့ ဦးတည်ပြီး တည်ဆောက်ထားပါတယ်။

And at top of that pyramid, it's calculus.

အဲဒီ ပိရမစ်ကြီးရဲ့ ထိပ်မှာရှိတာကတော့ ကဲကုလသင်္ချာပါပဲ။

And I'm here to say

ကျွန်တော် ဒီကိုရောက်လာတာ ကတော့

that I think that that is the wrong summit of the pyramid ...

ဒီပိရမစ်ရဲ့ ထိပ်ပိုင်းဟာ မှားယွင်းနေတယ် ဆိုတာပြောဖို့ပါ။

that the correct summit -- that all of our students,

ကျွန်တော်တို့ရဲ့ ကျောင်းသားတွေအားလုံး၊ အထက်တန်းကျောင်း ဆင်းဖူးသူတွေအားလုံး

every high school graduate should know --

သိနားလည်သင့်တဲ့ ပိရမစ်ရဲ့ထိပ်ပိုင်းအမှန်က

should be statistics:

စာရင်းအင်းသင်္ချာ ဖြစ်သင့်ပါတယ်။

probability and statistics.

ဖြစ်နိုင်ခြေ သီဝရီ နဲ့ စာရင်းအင်းပါ။

I mean, don't get me wrong. Calculus is an important subject.

ကျွန်တော် ဆိုလိုတာကတော့…. ကျွန်တော်ပြောတာ အထင်မလွဲပါနဲ့ခင်ဗျာ။ ကဲကုလသင်္ချာဟာ အရေးကြီးတဲ့ ဘာသာရပ်တစ်ခုပါ။

It's one of the great products of the human mind.

ဒါဟာ လူသားတို့ရဲ့ မနောဉာဏ်က ထုတ်လုပ်လိုက်တဲ့ ကြီးကျယ်ခမ်းနားတဲ့ အရာတစ်ခုပါ။

The laws of nature are written in the language of calculus.

သဘာဝတရားရဲ့ နိယာမတွေကို ကဲကုလသင်္ကေတစနစ်တွေနဲ့ ရေးပေးထားတာပါ။

And every student who studies math, science, engineering, economics,

နောက်ပြီး သင်္ချာ၊ သိပ္ပံ၊ စက်မှုအတတ်ပညာ၊ ဘောဂဗေဒ လေ့လာကြတဲ့

they should definitely learn calculus

ကျောင်းသားတိုင်းဟာ ကောလိပ်ရဲ့ ပထမဆုံးနှစ်အဆုံးမှာ

by the end of their freshman year of college.

ကဲကုလသင်္ချာကို သေချာပေါက် သင်သင့်ပါတယ်။

But I'm here to say, as a professor of mathematics,

ဒါပေမဲ့ သင်္ချာပါမောက္ခ တစ်ယောက်အနေနဲ့ ကျွန်တော် ဒီကိုရောက်လာတာကတော့

that very few people actually use calculus

အင်မတန်နည်းပါးလှတဲ့ လူတွေလောက်ကပဲ ကဲကုလသင်္ချာကို

in a conscious, meaningful way, in their day-to-day lives.

သူတို့ရဲ့နေ့စဉ်ဘဝတွေမှာ ကိုယ်တိုင်သတိမူပြီး ရည်ရွယ်ချက်ရှိရှိ သုံးကြတယ်ဆိုတာပြောဖို့ပါ။

On the other hand,

အခြား တစ်ဖက်မှာတော့

statistics -- that's a subject that you could,

စာရင်းအင်းသင်္ချာ ဆိုတာ နေ့စဉ်ဘဝမှာ သုံးနိုင်တဲ့

and should, use on daily basis. Right?

သုံးသင့်တဲ့ ဘာသာရပ်တစ်ခု ဖြစ်ပါတယ်။ မှန်ပါရဲ့လားခင်ဗျာ

It's risk. It's reward. It's randomness.

ဒါကဆုံးရှုံးနိုင်ခြေအကြောင်း၊ ဆုလာဘ်အကြောင်း၊ ကြုံရာကျပန်းဖြစ်မှုအကြောင်းပါ။

It's understanding data.

ဒါက အချက်အလက်ကို နားလည်ခြင်း ပညာပါ၊

I think if our students, if our high school students --

ကျွန်တော်ထင်ပါတယ် တကယ်လို့သာ ကျွန်တော်တို့ရဲ့ အထက်တန်းကျောင်းသားတွေ

if all of the American citizens --

တကယ်လို့သာ အမေရိကန် နိုင်ငံသားတွေအားလုံး

knew about probability and statistics,

ဖြစ်နိုင်ခြေ သီဝရီ နဲ့ စာရင်းအင်ပညာ အကြောင်းကို နားလည်ကြမယ် ဆိုရင်ပေါ့လေ။

we wouldn't be in the economic mess that we're in today. (Laughter) (Applause)

ကျွန်တော်တို့ ဒီနေ့ရောက်နေတဲ့ စီးပွားရေးအရှုပ်တော်ပုံထဲ ရောက်ခဲ့မှာမဟုတ်ပါဘူး။ (ရယ်သံများ) (လက်ခုပ်သံများ)

Not only -- thank you -- not only that ...

ဒါတင်မက -- ကျေးဇူးပါခင်ဗျာ -- ဒါတင်မကသေးပါဘူး ...

but if it's taught properly, it can be a lot of fun.

တကယ်လို့သာ အဲဒါကို နည်းမှန်လမ်းမှန် သင်ကြားမယ်ဆို အရမ်းကို ပျော်စရာကောင်းပါလိမ့်မယ်

I mean, probability and statistics,

ကျွန်တော်ပြောချင်တာက ဖြစ်နိုင်ခြေ သီဝရီ နဲ့ စာရင်းအင်ပညာ ဆိုတာ

it's the mathematics of games and gambling.

ကစားပွဲတွေနဲ့ လောင်းကစားပွဲတွေနဲ့ဆိုင်တဲ့ သင်္ချာပါ။

It's analyzing trends. It's predicting the future.

ဒါဟာ ရှေးရှုရာ လမ်းကြောင်းတွေကို ခွဲခြမ်းစိတ်ဖြာခြင်းပါ၊ အနာဂတ်ကို ကြိုတင်ခန့်မှန်းရခြင်းပါ။

Look, the world has changed

ဒီမှာခင်ဗျ၊ ကမ္ဘာကြီးက အန်နာလော့ analog စနစ်ကနေ

from analog to digital.

ဒီဂျစ်တယ် digital စနစ်ဆီကို ကူးပြောင်းခဲ့ပြီ

And it's time for our mathematics curriculum to change

from analog to digital,

from the more classical, continuous mathematics,

to the more modern, discrete mathematics --

the mathematics of uncertainty,

ဖြစ်နိုင်ခြေ သီဝရီ နဲ့ စာရင်းအင်ပညာ ဆိုတဲ့

of randomness, of data --

မသေချာမှုဆိုင်ရာ၊ ကြုံရာကျပန်းဖြစ်မှုဆိုင်ရာ၊

that being probability and statistics.

အချက်အလက်များဆိုင်ရာ သင်္ချာပညာဆီကို ကူးပြောင်းရမှာပါ

In summary, instead of our students

နိဂုံးချုပ်ပြောရရင် ကျွန်တော်တို့ ကျောင်းသားတွေ

learning about the techniques of calculus,

ကဲကုလသင်္ချာရဲ့ နည်းနာနိဿယတွေကို သင်ကြမယ့်အစား

I think it would be far more significant

သမတ်ကိန်းမှ ပုံမှန် သွေဖည်ခြင်းနှစ်မျိုး ဆိုတာ ဘာကိုဆိုလိုမှန်း နားလည်ကြရင်

if all of them knew what two standard deviations

ပိုပြီး သိသိသာသာအကျိုးရှိလာမယ်လို့ ကျွန်တော်ကတော့ ထင်ပါတယ်၊

from the mean means. And I mean it.

ကျွန်တော် အတည်ပြောနေတာပါ၊
