Now, if President Obama

ئێستا، ئەگەر سەرۆک ئۆباما

invited me to be the next Czar of Mathematics,

بانگھێشتم بکات تا ببم بە بەڕێوەبەری داھاتووی بیرکاری،

then I would have a suggestion for him

پێشنیارێکم بۆی دەبێت

that I think would vastly improve

کە پێموایە دەبێتە ھۆی بەرەوپێشبردنێکی بەھێز

the mathematics education in this country.

لە پەروەردەی بیرکاری لەم وڵاتەدا.

And it would be easy to implement

و ئاسان دەبێت بۆ جێبەجێ کردن

and inexpensive.

و ھەرزان دەبێت.

The mathematics curriculum that we have

ئەو پەیڕەوەی بیرکاری کە ئێمە ھەمانە

is based on a foundation of arithmetic and algebra.

پشت دەبەستێت بە زانستی ژمارەناسی و جەبر.

And everything we learn after that

و ھەر شتێک کە دوای ئەوە فێری دەبین

is building up towards one subject.

بەرەو یەک بابەت گەشە دەکات.

And at top of that pyramid, it's calculus.

و لوتکەی ئەو ھەڕەمە، بریتییە لە تەواوکاری.

And I'm here to say

و من لێرەم تا بڵێم

that I think that that is the wrong summit of the pyramid ...

کە پێموایە ئەم لوتکەی ھەڕەمە ھەڵەیە ...

that the correct summit -- that all of our students,

لوتکە ڕاستەکە -- کە ھەموو خوێندکارەکانمان،

every high school graduate should know --

دەرچووانی خوێندنگای ئامادەیی پێویستە بزانن

should be statistics:

کە دەبێت ئامارزانی بێت:

probability and statistics.

ئەگەر و ئامارزانی .

I mean, don't get me wrong. Calculus is an important subject.

مەبەستم ئەوەیە، بە ھەڵەمدا مەبەن. تەواوکاری بابەتێکی گرنگە.

It's one of the great products of the human mind.

یەکێکە لە مەزنترین بەرھەمەکانی مێشکی مرۆڤ.

The laws of nature are written in the language of calculus.

یاساکانی سروشت بە زمانی تەواوکاری نووسراون.

And every student who studies math, science, engineering, economics,

و ھەر خوێندکارێک کە بیرکاری، زانست، ئەندازیاری، ئابووری دەخوێنێت،

they should definitely learn calculus

بە دڵنیاییەوە دەبێت تەواوکاری فێربن

by the end of their freshman year of college.

لە کۆتایی ساڵی یەکەمی کۆلێژیاندا.

But I'm here to say, as a professor of mathematics,

بەڵام لێرەم تا بڵێم، وەکو پڕۆفیسۆرێکی بیرکاری،

that very few people actually use calculus

کە لە ڕاستیدا ژمارەیەکی زۆر کەم لە خەڵکی کار بە تەواوکاری دەکەن

in a conscious, meaningful way, in their day-to-day lives.

بە ڕێگەیەکی ھەستیارانە، پڕ مانا، لە ژیانی ڕۆژانەیاندا.

On the other hand,

لە لایەکی ترەوە،

statistics -- that's a subject that you could,

ئامارزانی -- کە بابەتێکە دەتوانن،

and should, use on daily basis. Right?

و پێویستە، لەسەر بنچینەی ڕۆژانە بەکاری بھێنن، ڕاستە؟

It's risk. It's reward. It's randomness.

ئەوە سەرکێشییە. پاداشتە. ھەڕەمەکییە.

It's understanding data.

تێگەشتنی داتایە.

I think if our students, if our high school students --

پێموایە ئەگەر خوێندکاری ئێمە، و ھی ئامادەیی

if all of the American citizens --

ئەگەر ھەموو ھاوڵاتیانی ئەمریکی --

knew about probability and statistics,

دەربارەی ئەگەر و ئامارزانییان زانیبا،

we wouldn't be in the economic mess that we're in today. (Laughter) (Applause)

لەناو ئاڵۆزیە ئابووریەکەی ئەمڕۆدا نەدەبووین. (پێکەنین) (چەپڵە)

Not only -- thank you -- not only that ...

نەک تەنھا -- سوپاس -- نەک تەنھا ئەوە ...

but if it's taught properly, it can be a lot of fun.

بەڵام ئەوە بەڕاستی بەھێزە. دەکرێ زۆر پێکەنیناوی بێت.

I mean, probability and statistics,

مەبەستم، ئەگەر و ئامارزانی،

it's the mathematics of games and gambling.

بیرکاری یارییەکان و قومارکردنە.

It's analyzing trends. It's predicting the future.

شیکردنەوەی خواستەکانە. پێشبینی کردنی داھاتووە.

Look, the world has changed

سەیرکەن، جیھان گۆڕاوە

from analog to digital.

لە پێوانەییەوە بۆ ژمارەیی.

And it's time for our mathematics curriculum to change

و ئێستا کاتی گۆڕانی پەیڕەوەی بیرکارییەکەمانە

from analog to digital,

لە پێوانەییەوە بۆ ژمارەیی،

from the more classical, continuous mathematics,

لە زیاتر دێرینەکەوە، بیرکاری بەردەوام،

to the more modern, discrete mathematics --

بۆ تازەتر، بیرکاری پچڕ پچڕ --

the mathematics of uncertainty,

بیرکاری گومان،

of randomness, of data --

ھەڕەمەکی، داتا --

that being probability and statistics.

دەبێت بە ئەگەر و ئامارزانی.

In summary, instead of our students

بە کورتی، لەجیاتی خوێندکارەکانمان

learning about the techniques of calculus,

فێری شێوازەکانی تەواوکاری بن،

I think it would be far more significant

پێموایە زۆر گرنگتر دەبێت

if all of them knew what two standard deviations

ئەگەر بیانزانبوایە دوو لادانە پێوانەییەکان

from the mean means. And I mean it.

لە مانادا مانایان چییە. و من مەبەستم ئەوەیە.
