invited me to be the next Czar of Mathematics,

ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಮುಂದಿನ ಗಣಿತದ ಚಕ್ರಾಧಿಪತಿಯಾಗಲು ಅಹ್ವಾನಿಸಿದರೆ

then I would have a suggestion for him

that I think would vastly improve

I mean, don't get me wrong. Calculus is an important subject.

ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಅಪಾರ್ಥಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಡಿ. ಕ್ಯಾಲ್ಕುಲಸ್ ಒಂದು ಮುಖ್ಯವಾದ ವಿಷಯ.

It's one of the great products of the human mind.

ಅದು ಮಾನವ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ ರಚಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ವಿಷಯಗಳಲ್ಲೊಂದು.

The laws of nature are written in the language of calculus.

And every student who studies math, science, engineering, economics,

ಗಣಿತ, ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ, ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರಿಂಗ್, ಅರ್ಥಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ ಕಲಿಯುವ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಯೂ

they should definitely learn calculus

ಖಂಡಿತವಾಗಿ ಕ್ಯಾಲ್ಕುಲಸ್ ಕಲಿಯಲೇಬೇಕು.

by the end of their freshman year of college.

ತಮ್ಮ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನ ಹೊಸ ವರ್ಷದ ಕೊನೆಯೊಳಗೆ.

But I'm here to say, as a professor of mathematics,

ಆದರೆ ನಾನು ಗಣಿತದ ಪ್ರೊಫೆಸರ್ ಆಗಿ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳುವುದೇನೆಂದರೆ

that very few people actually use calculus

ಕೆಲವೇ ಕೆಲವು ಜನ ಕ್ಯಾಲ್ಕುಲಸ್ ನ್ನು ನಿಜವಾಗಿ

in a conscious, meaningful way, in their day-to-day lives.

ಪ್ರಜ್ಞಾಪೂರ್ವಕವಾಗಿ, ಅರ್ಥಪೂರ್ಣ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತಮ್ಮ ದಿನನಿತ್ಯದ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

On the other hand,

ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಕಡೆ

statistics -- that's a subject that you could,

ಸಂಖ್ಯಾಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ - ಈ ವಿಷಯವನ್ನು ನೀವು ಪ್ರತಿದಿನ ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸಬಲ್ಲಿರಿ

and should, use on daily basis. Right?

It's risk. It's reward. It's randomness.

knew about probability and statistics,

ಸಂಭವನೀಯತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸಂಖ್ಯಾಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತಿಳಿದಿದ್ದರೆ

we wouldn't be in the economic mess that we're in today. (Laughter) (Applause)

Not only -- thank you -- not only that ...

but if it's taught properly, it can be a lot of fun.

And it's time for our mathematics curriculum to change

from analog to digital,

the mathematics of uncertainty,

ಅನಿಶ್ಬಿತ ಗಣಿತ,

of randomness, of data --

ಉಹೆಯ ಗಣಿತ, ಡಾಟ ಗಣಿತ -

that being probability and statistics.

ಮತ್ತು ಅದೇ ಸಂಭವನೀಯತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸಂಖ್ಯಾಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ.

In summary, instead of our students

ಸ್ಥೂಲವಾಗಿ, ನಮ್ಮ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು

learning about the techniques of calculus,

ಗಣಿತಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದ ವಿಧಾನಗಳನ್ನು ಕಲಿಯುವ ಬದಲು

I think it would be far more significant

ನನಗನ್ನಿಸುವುದು ಅತಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಮಹತ್ವಪೂರ್ಣವಾದದ್ದು

if all of them knew what two standard deviations

ಮಧ್ಯದಿಂದ ಉಂಟಾಗಬಹುದಾದ ಎರಡು ನಿಗದಿತ ತಿರುವುಗಳೆಂದರೆ ಏನು

from the mean means. And I mean it.

ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ತಿಳಿಯುವುದಾಗಿದೆ. ಅದೇ ನನ್ನ ಮಾತಿನ ಅರ್ಥ.
