And everything we learn after that

is building up towards one subject.

결국 하나의 지향점을 향하고 있습니다.

And at top of that pyramid, it's calculus.

And I'm here to say

오늘 저는 수학교육의 지향점 자체가 잘못되었다는 말씀을 드리려고 합니다.

that I think that that is the wrong summit of the pyramid ...

probability and statistics.

확률과 통계말입니다.

I mean, don't get me wrong. Calculus is an important subject.

아, 오해하지 마세요. 미적분학 역시 정말 중요한 분야입니다.

It's one of the great products of the human mind.

분명히 인류 지성의 위대한 결과물 중의 하나지요.

The laws of nature are written in the language of calculus.

자연의 법칙이 미적분학의 언어로 씌여 있으니까요.

And every student who studies math, science, engineering, economics,

수학, 과학, 공학, 경제학 등을 공부하는 모든 학생들은

they should definitely learn calculus

대학교 1학년이 끝날 때까지

by the end of their freshman year of college.

분명 미적분학을 배워야 하겠지요.

But I'm here to say, as a professor of mathematics,

하지만, 수학과 교수로서 여기서 말씀드리자면

that very few people actually use calculus

실생활에서 매일 미적분을 의식적으로

in a conscious, meaningful way, in their day-to-day lives.

의미있게 활용하는 사람은 극소수입니다.

On the other hand,

반면에,

statistics -- that's a subject that you could,

통계는 어떨까요? 통계는 여러분의 하루하루 일상에서

and should, use on daily basis. Right?

활용할 수 있고, 활용해야하는 지식이잖아요. 안 그래요?

It's risk. It's reward. It's randomness.

리스크, 보상, 무작위성(randomness),

It's understanding data.

데이터 이해하기. 이 모든게 통계에요.

I think if our students, if our high school students --

만약 우리 학생들이, 우리나라 고등학교 학생들이,

if all of the American citizens --

아니, 모든 미국인들이

knew about probability and statistics,

확률가 통계에 대해서 알고 있었다면 어땠을까 생각해 봅니다.

we wouldn't be in the economic mess that we're in today. (Laughter) (Applause)

그러면 지금과 같은 경제 위기는 오지 않았을지도 모릅니다.

Not only -- thank you -- not only that ...

그 뿐 아니라 -- 감사합니다 -- 그 뿐 아니라 ...

but if it's taught properly, it can be a lot of fun.

제대로 가르치기만 한다면, 내용도 아주 재미있습니다.

I mean, probability and statistics,

왜냐하면, 확률과 통계 자체가

it's the mathematics of games and gambling.

게임과 도박에 대한 수학이기 때문이죠.

It's analyzing trends. It's predicting the future.

트렌드를 분석하고 미래를 예측하는 것입니다.

Look, the world has changed

생각해 보세요. 온 세상이

from analog to digital.

아날로그에서 디지털로 바뀌었습니다.

And it's time for our mathematics curriculum to change

이제 우리 수학 교과과정도

from analog to digital,

아날로그에서 디지털로 바뀔 때에요.

from the more classical, continuous mathematics,

전통적인 연속함수를 다루던 수학에서 탈피해서

to the more modern, discrete mathematics --

현대적인 이산수학에 대한 내용을 더 가르쳐야 합니다.

the mathematics of uncertainty,

불확실성과 무작위성,

of randomness, of data --

그리고 데이터에 대한 수학이 바로

that being probability and statistics.

확률과 통계라는 것이지요.

In summary, instead of our students

정리하자면, 우리 학생들이

learning about the techniques of calculus,

미적분학 기술을 배우는 대신에

I think it would be far more significant

'평균에서 표준편차 2배만큼 떨어져 있다'는

if all of them knew what two standard deviations

문장의 의미를 다들 알 수 있다면

from the mean means. And I mean it.

그것이 훨씬 의미 있을 거라는 말입니다.
