I'm used to thinking of the TED audience

بیر لە بینەرەکانی تێد دەکەمەوە

as a wonderful collection of some of the most effective,

intelligent, intellectual, savvy,

And I think that's true.

However, I also have reason to believe that many, if not most, of you

ھەرچەندە،

are actually tying your shoes incorrectly.

پێڵاوەکانتان بە ھەڵە دەبەستن.

Now I know that seems ludicrous.

ئێستا دەزانم کە ئەمە وەک شتێکی پێکەنیناوی دەردەکەوێت.

I know that seems ludicrous.

دەزانم ئەمە شتێکی پێکەنیناویە.

And believe me, I lived the same sad life until about three years ago.

بڕوام پێبکەن ، من لەو ژیانە خەمبارە ژیاوم تاوەکو سێ ساڵ بەر لە ئێستا.

And what happened to me

و چی بەسەر مندا ھات

was I bought, what was for me, a very expensive pair of shoes.

پێڵاوێکی زۆر گرانبەھام کڕیبوو.

But those shoes came with round nylon laces,

بەڵام ئەو پێڵاوانە قەیتانێکی نایلۆنیان پێوە بوو،

and I couldn't keep them tied.

نەمدەتوانی بیانبەستم.

So I went back to the store and said to the owner,

و گەڕامەوە بۆ کۆگاکە و بە خاوەنەکەیم گووت،

"I love the shoes, but I hate the laces."

پێڵاوەکەم بە دڵ بوو، بەڵام قەیتانەکە نا .

He took a look and said, "Oh, you're tying them wrong."

سەیرێکی کردوو گووتی ، «ئۆ تۆ بە ھەڵە بەستووتە»

Now up until that moment,

ئێستا بیر لەو ھەڵەیە دەکەمەوە،

I would have thought that, by age 50,

بیرم لەوە کردەوە لە تەمەنی پەنجا ساڵی،

one of the life skills that I had really nailed

یەکێک لەو ئەزموونانەی لە ژیانم بەدەستم هێنا

was tying my shoes.

بەستنی پێڵاوەکانم بوو.

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

But not so -- let me demonstrate.

بەڵام بەو جۆرە نییە --با بۆتان ڕوونبکەمەوە.

This is the way

بەو ببشێوەیە

that most of us were taught to tie our shoes.

زۆربەمان فئری بەستنی پێڵاوەکانمان کراوین.

Now as it turns out -- thank you.

ئەوە شتێکی چاوەڕوان نەکراو بوو سوپاس.

(Applause)

( چەپڵە)

Wait, there's more.

بووەستن،ھەندێک شتی تر ھەیە.

As it turns out --

وەک شتێکی چاوەڕوان نەکراو..

(Laughter)

«پێکەنین»

there's a strong form and a weak form of this knot,

ئەم گرێیە جۆرێکی بەهێزو جۆرێکی بێهێزی هەیە،

and we were taught the weak form.

و ئێمە جۆرە بێهێزەکە فێرکراوین

And here's how to tell.

و لێرە چۆن بیڵێین.

If you pull the strands at the base of the knot,

ئەگەر تۆ لەبنچینەی گرێدا داوەکان ڕابکێشیت،

you will see that the bow will orient itself

ئەوا دەبینیت کە چەمانەوەکە خۆی ئاڕاستە دەکات

down the long axis of the shoe.

بەرەو خوارەوە لەتەوەرە درێژەکەی پێڵاوەکە.

That's the weak form of the knot.

ئەمە شێوازی بێهێزی گرێکەیە

But not to worry.

بەڵام خەمبار مەبە.

If we start over

ئەگەر سەر لە نوێ دەستپێبکەەینەوە

and simply go the other direction around the bow,

بڕۆ بۆ تەوەرەکەی تر لە دەووری کەوانەکە،

we get this, the strong form of the knot.

شێوەی بەهێزی گرێکە بەدەست دەهێنین.

And if you pull the cords under the knot,

ئەگەر پەتەکە لەژێر گرێکە ڕابکێشیت،

you will see that the bow orients itself

دەبینی کە قوفڵەکە بە ئاڕاستەی خۆیدا دەچێت

along the transverse axis of the shoe.

ئێمە بە جۆرێکی جیا قەیتانەکانیان دەبەستن.

This is a stronger knot.

بەم شێوەیە گرێکە زۆر توند ئەبێت.

It will come untied less often.

کە کردنەوەی زۆر قورس دەبێت.

It will let you down less, and not only that, it looks better.

بەم جۆرە گرێیەکە باشتر دەمێنێتەوە، و باشتریش دەردەکوێت.

We're going to do this one more time.

جارێکیتر ئەمە دەکەینەوە.

(Applause)

«دەنگی چەپڵە»

Start as usual --

وەک ڕۆتێنێک دەست پێبکە

(Applause)

«چەپڵە لێدان»

go the other way around the loop.

بڕۆ بۆ دەوورووبەری گرێیەکە.

This is a little hard for children,

ئەمە کەمێک قورسە بۆ منداڵ،

but I think you can handle it.

پێموایە دەتوانی چارەسەری بکەی.

Pull the knot.

گرێیەکە ڕابکێشە.

There it is: the strong form of the shoe knot.

ئەوەتا: شێوازێکی بەھێزی گرێکە،

Now, in keeping with today's theme,

ئێستا دەمەوێت لەگەڵ بابەتی ڕۆژەکە،

I'd like to point out -- something you already know --

دەمەوێت ئاماژە بە شتێک بدەم کە ئێوەش دەیزانن..١

that sometimes a small advantage someplace in life

ھەندێکجار بچوکترین بەرژەوەندی لە ھەندێک شوێنی ژیان ھەیە

can yield tremendous results someplace else.

کە دەتوانێ ئەنجامێکی بێشومار لەھەندێ شوێنی تر لەخۆبگرێ.

(Laughter)

«پێکەنین »

Live long and prosper.

تەمەن درێژ و سەرکەوتوو بن.
