It’s very confusing and unsettling to wake up

لە خەو هەڵسان سەرلێشێواوانە و زۆر بێزارکەرە

and have only 72 hours to make that really hard decision

to either leave your house or stay on the Russian occupied territory.

Overnight, the border has been unofficially redrawn

by the occupied forces.

Your bedroom is now located in a different country,

The borders are not marked,

so you might end up being kidnapped or detained by the Russian-backed forces.

Director: Is that a reality for many people?

دەرهێنەر: ئایا ئەوە واقیعێکە بۆ زۆر کەس؟

Daro Sulakauri: It is a reality for many people in Georgia.

دارۆ سولەکوری: بۆ زۆر کەس لە جۆرجیا واقیعە.

In fact, about 20 percent of Georgia is occupied by Russia.

لە ڕاستیدا نزیکەی لەسەدا ٢٠ی جۆرجیا لە لایەن ڕووسیا داگیرکراوە.

Georgia is not heard or seen in the world,

جۆرجیا لە جیهاندا نە دەبیسترێت و نە دەبینرێت،

and many don't even know the location of the country.

و زۆرێک تەنانەت شوێنی وڵاتەکەش نازانن.

It's important to know what is going on today in Georgia

گرنگە بزانیت ئەمڕۆ چی لە جۆرجیا دەگوزەرێت

because yeah, it happens in one region,

چونکە بەڵێ، لە یەک ناوچەدا ڕوودەدات،

but you never know when it's going to happen in your country

بەڵام هەرگیز نازانیت کەی لە وڵاتەکەی تۆ ڕوودەدات

or in your region.

So we have to pay more attention.

My name is Daro Sulakauri.

من ناوم دارۆ سولەکۆرییە.

I'm a Georgian photojournalist.

من فۆتۆ ڕۆژنامەنووسێکی جۆرجیم.

I started taking pictures when I was 14.

من لە تەمەنی ١٤ ساڵییەوە دەستم بە وێنەگرتن کردووە.

I was talking with my camera.

بە کامێراکەم قسەم دەکرد.

It was like an intermediary of me expressing myself.

وەک نێوەندگیرێک وایە بۆ دەربڕینی هەستی خۆم.

I had like a turning point

وەک خاڵی وەرچەرخانم بوو

when I did my first photo project on Chechen refugees.

کاتێک یەکەم پڕۆژەی وێنەیم لەسەر پەنابەرانی چیچانی ئەنجامدا.

My great grandmother was a Chechen woman,

داپیرە گەورەم ژنێکی چیچانی بوو،

and I was always told stories about her.

و هەمیشە دەربارەی خۆی چیرۆکی بۆ دەگێڕامەوە.

And during the time there was this stereotype on Chechens in Georgia,

و لەو ماوەیەدا هەڵەتێگەیشتنێکی باو سەبارەت بە چیچانییەکان لە جۆرجیا هەبوو،

that they were all like criminals and terrorists.

کە هەموویان تاوانبار و تیرۆریستن.

And I wanted to destroy the stereotype.

وەستم ئەم هەڵەتێگەیشتنە باوە بگۆرم.

When I finished the story, I got emails from people saying that,

کاتێک چیرۆکەکەم تەواو کرد، کەسانێک ئیمەیڵیان بۆ دەناردم و دەیانگوت،

thank you for showing Chechens in a different way.

سوپاس بۆ نیشاندانی چیچانەکان بە شێوەیەکی جیاواز.

And so I think that was the moment I realized what power photography had

و بۆیە پێموایە ئەوە ئەو ساتە بوو تێگەیشتم فۆتۆگرافی چ هێزێکی هەیە

and how it can really change consciousness in people

و چۆن بەڕاستی دەتوانێت هۆشیاری مرۆڤەکان بگۆڕێت

and let them think differently.

و با بە شێوەیەکی جیاواز بیربکەنەوە.

From that moment, I concentrated on stories in my country

لەو ساتەوە، تیشکم خستە سەر چیرۆکەکانی وڵاتەکەم

that touched on taboo topics such as early marriages

کە دەست بردن بوو بۆ بابەتی بڤەی وەک هاوسەرگیری پێشوەخت

and conditions faced by mine workers,

و ئەو بارودۆخەی کرێکارانی کانەکان ڕووبەڕووی دەبنەوە،

stories about minorities,

چیرۆکەکان دەربارەی کەمینەکان،

post-Soviet health care system that created pandemic of stolen babies,

سیستەمی چاودێری تەندروستی دوای سۆڤیەت کە پەتای دزینی کۆرپەی دروستکرد،

and how conflict with Russia led to the surreal border dynamics

و چۆن ململانێ لەگەڵ ڕووسیا بووە هۆی ڕۆتینێکی سوریالی سنورەکان

I described earlier.

پێشتر باسم کرد.

There are so many topics to cover in Georgia,

بابەتەکان ئەوەندە زۆرن بۆ ڕووماڵکردن لە جۆرجیا،

and I feel like it's not been covered.

و هەست دەکەم کە باس نەکراون.

By photographing these topics and talking about it

بە وێنەگرتنی ئەم بابەتانە و قسەکردن لەسەری

the dialogue starts,

and I think from this dialogue the change comes.

One journey I documented a 14-year-old boy telling the story

یەکێک لەو گەشتانەی کە تۆمارم کردوون کوڕێکی ١٤ ساڵان چیرۆکێک دەگێڕێتەوە

about how he had to cross the occupied border

سەبارەت بەوەی کە چۆن دەبوو لە سنووری داگیرکراو بپەڕێتەوە

onto the Russian-controlled territory to visit his ill grandmother,

بۆ سەر خاکی کۆنترۆڵ کراوی ڕووسیا بۆ ئەوەی سەردانی داپیرە نەخۆشەکەی بکات،

and kind of risking his life.

و مەترسیەکانی سەر ژیانی.

And I went with him on this one trip

لە یەکێک گەشتەکان، منیش لەگەڵی چووم

that took us four hours to crawl, walk,

کە چوار کاتژمێر گاگۆرکێ، ڕۆیشتن،

hide and cross irrigation canals.

خۆشاردنەوە، پەڕینەوە لە کەناڵەکانی ئاودێری خایەند.

We had to hide from both the Russian-backed militants

ناچار بووین لە هەردووکیان خۆمان بشارینەوە، چەکدارانەی پاڵپشتی کراو لەلایەن ڕووسیاوە

and also Georgian border police.

و هەروەها پۆلیسی سنووری جۆرجیا.

It's really dangerous for, especially journalists,

بەڕاستی مەترسیدارە، بە تایبەتی ڕۆژنامەنووسان،

because they don't know where the border is.

چونکە ئەوان نازانن سنوور لە کوێیە.

I could not make any mistakes

نەدەبوو هیچ هەڵەیەک بکەم

or I would be detained by the Russian-backed militants.

He symbolized for me our people's resilience

ئەو بۆ من هێما بوو خۆڕاگری گەلەکەمان

because he loves his grandmother so much.

He kind of killed the fear in him and took this road.

ئەو بەسەر ترسی خۆیدا زاڵ بوو و ئەم ڕێگایەی گرتەبەر.

I think it matters to not just be a photographer

پێم وایە گرنگە تەنها فۆتۆگرافەر نەبێت

who goes there and leaves and never comes back,

بچیتە ئەوێ و بڕوات و هەرگیز ناگەڕێتەوە،

but to actually have this connection with the people.

بەڵکو پێویستە پەیوەندی لەگەڵ خەڵکەکە درووست بکات.

It's not just a story that's told by a photographer,

تەنها چیرۆکێک نییە کە لەلایەن فۆتۆگرافەرێکەوە دەگێڕدرێتەوە،

but it's a story that's told by the people who live in Georgia.

بەڵکو چیرۆکێکە کە لەلایەن ئەو کەسانەی کە لە جۆرجیا دەژین دەگێڕدرێتەوە.

It's like an archive

وەک ئەرشیفێک وایە

that will let the future generation also understand

what it was like to live close to the occupied territories.

Soviet Union tried to demolish our identity,

یەکێتی سۆڤیەت هەوڵی ڕوخاندنی ناسنامەمانی دا،

but they couldn't manage because our roots are very strong,

بەڵام سەرکەوتوو نەبوون چونکە ڕەگ و ڕیشەمان زۆر بەهێزە،

like, traditions and culture and language.

وەک، نەریت و کولتوور و زمان.

So I think it's very important to tell the story of my people.

بۆیە پێم وایە زۆر گرنگە چیرۆکی گەلەکەم بگێڕدرێتەوە .

I want us to be heard.

من دەمەوێت گوێمان لێ بگیرێت.
