I'm used to thinking of the TED audience

as a wonderful collection of some of the most effective,

And I think that's true.

However, I also have reason to believe that many, if not most, of you

ཡིན་ཡང་། ངས་བསམ་ན་

ཁྱེད་ཅག་ཁྲོད་ཀྱི་མི་མང་པོ་ཞིག་གིས་

are actually tying your shoes incorrectly.

དོན་ངོ་མར་ལྷམ་ཐིག་སྒྲོག་སྟངས་ནོར་ཡོད་པ་རེད།

Now I know that seems ludicrous.

དེ་ཅུང་དགོད་བྲོ་བ་ཞིག་ཡིན་པ་ང་ཡིས་ཧ་གོ

བལྟས་ཚོད་ཀྱིས་དགོད་བྲོ་བ་ཞིག་ཡིན་ནའང་།

I know that seems ludicrous.

And believe me, I lived the same sad life until about three years ago.

ངོ་མ། ངའི་འཚོ་བའི་ནང་དུའང་རྟག་པར་ནོར་འཁྲུལ་འདི་བཟོ་ཞིང་།

ལོ་གསུམ་གྱི་སྔོན་བར་ལ་དེ་འདྲ་བྱས་ཡོང་པ་ཡིན།

And what happened to me

སྐབས་དེར། ངས་རང་ཉིད་ལ་

was I bought, what was for me, a very expensive pair of shoes.

ལྷམ་གོང་ཆེན་ཞིག་ཉོས་པ་དང་།

But those shoes came with round nylon laces,

ཡིན་ཡང་ལྷམ་དེའི་ལྷམ་ཐིག་ཉི་ལོང་རྟགས་ཅན་རེད།

and I couldn't keep them tied.

ངས་ཇི་ལྟར་སྒྲོག་དགོས་པ་མ་ཤེས་པས།

So I went back to the store and said to the owner,

ལྷམ་ཁྱེར་ནས་ཚོང་ཁང་གི་བདག་པོ་ལ།

"I love the shoes, but I hate the laces."

“ང་ལྷམ་ཆ་འདིར་དགའ་པོ་འདུག ཡིན་ཡང་ལྷམ་ཐིག་ལ་སུན་པོ་འདུག”ཅེས་ལབ་ཡིན།

He took a look and said, "Oh, you're tying them wrong."

ཚོང་བདག་གིས་ལྟ་ཙམ་བྱས་ཏེ། “ཨོ། ཁྱོད་ཀྱི་ལྷམ་ཐིག་མདུད་སྟངས་ནོར་བ་རེད”ཟེར།

སྐབས་དེ་དུས་གཟོད།

Now up until that moment,

I would have thought that, by age 50,

ངའི་སེམས་ལ་ལོ་ལྔ་བཅུ་ལོན་པའི་མི་ཞིག་

one of the life skills that I had really nailed

འཇོན་ཤོས་ཀྱི་ལག་རྩལ་དེ་

was tying my shoes.

ལྷམ་ཐིག་སྒྲོག་སྟངས་ལས་བརྒལ་བ་ཞིག་སྙམ།

(Laughter)

But not so -- let me demonstrate.

ཡིན་ཡང་། དོན་དངོས་འདི་འདྲ་ཞིག་མ་རེད། ངས་གསལ་བཤད་ཅིག་བྱ།

ལྷམ་ཐིག་སྒྲོག་སྟངས་འདི་

This is the way

མི་མང་ཆེ་བའི་སྒྲོག་སྟངས་རེད།

that most of us were taught to tie our shoes.

Now as it turns out -- thank you.

འདིའི་སྟེང་ནས....ཐུགས་རྗེ་ཆེ།

(Applause)

Wait, there's more.

ཏོག་ཙམ་སྒུག ད་དུང་ཚར་ཡོད་པ་མ་རེད་དཱ།

As it turns out --

འདི་ཡི་སྟེང་དུ་

(Laughter)

there's a strong form and a weak form of this knot,

སྒྲོག་སྟངས་འདི་ལ་དམ་མི་དམ་གཉིས་ཡོད་པ་རེད།

ང་ཚོས་སྔོན་ཆད་བསླབས་པ་དེ་དམ་པོ་མིན་པ་ད་རེད།

and we were taught the weak form.

And here's how to tell.

ངས་ཁྱེད་ཅག་ལ་སྟོན།

If you pull the strands at the base of the knot,

གལ་སྲིད་ཁྱོད་ཀྱིས་འདི་ལྟར་ལྷམ་ཐིག་གི་གཤམ་ནས་ཕར་ཚུར་ལ་འཐེན་པ་ཡིན་ན།

you will see that the bow will orient itself

ཁྱེད་ཀྱིས་མཐོང་པ་ནང་བཞིན་

down the long axis of the shoe.

རང་བཞིན་གྱིས་མདའ་རིང་གི་ཚུགས་ཀར་འགྱུར་གྱི་འདུག་ལ།

That's the weak form of the knot.

འདི་སྒྲོག་སྟངས་མི་དམ་པ་དེ་རེད།

But not to worry.

ཡིན་ཡང་སེམས་ཁྲལ་མ་བྱེད་ཨཱ།

If we start over

འུ་ཅག་གིས་ཡང་བསྐྱར་ཅིག་བྱེད།

and simply go the other direction around the bow,

སྔོན་མ་ནང་བཞིན་ལག་གཡས་འོག་ནས་ཡོང་སྟེ་

དཀྲིས་བརྒྱབ་ནས་མདུད་པ་ཡིན་ན།

འདི་ནི་སྒྲོག་སྟངས་དམ་པོ་དེའི་རིགས་ཡིན།

we get this, the strong form of the knot.

གལ་སྲིད་ཁྱོད་ཀྱིས་འདི་ལྟར་འཐེན་ན།

And if you pull the cords under the knot,

you will see that the bow orients itself

ཁྱེད་ཀྱིས་མཐོང་ཐུབ་པ་ལྟར།

འཕྲེད་ཀྱི་མདའ་རིང་གི་ཚུགས་ཀ་མི་འགྱུར་བར་འདུག་ཐུབ།

along the transverse axis of the shoe.

This is a stronger knot.

སྒྲོག་སྟངས་དམ་པོ་འདི་རེད། འདི་རང་གར་ལྷོད་ཀྱི་མ་རེད་ལ།

It will come untied less often.

ཁྱེད་ལ་རྙོག་དྲ་ཡང་ཉུང་དུ་འགྲོ་ངེས།

It will let you down less, and not only that, it looks better.

དེར་མ་ཟད། བལྟས་ན་མིག་ལ་མཛེས་པ་ཞིག་ཀྱང་རེད།

We're going to do this one more time.

ངས་ད་དུང་ཐེངས་ཤིག་སྟོན།

Start as usual --

(Applause)

go the other way around the loop.

ལྡོག་ཕྱོགས་ནས་དཀྲིས་ཤིག་རྒྱག་དགོས།

This is a little hard for children,

འདི་ཕྲུ་གུ་ཚོར་མཚོན་ན་ཅུང་དཀའ་ནའང་ཐང་མོད།

but I think you can handle it.

ཡིན་ཡང་ཁྱེད་ཅག་གིས་འདི་ལྟར་སྒྲོག་ཐུབ་པར་ཡིད་ཆེས་ཡོད།

Pull the knot.

འདི་ལྟར་མདུད་རྗེས།

There it is: the strong form of the shoe knot.

ད་ཚར་པ་རེད། ལྷམ་ཐིག་དམ་པོར་སྒྲོག་ཐབས་རེད།

Now, in keeping with today's theme,

ད་ནི་དེ་རིང་གི་བརྗོད་བྱར་ཁ་འཕྲོད་ཆེད།

I'd like to point out -- something you already know --

ངས་ཁྱེད་ཅག་གིས་ཤེས་པའི་་ཤེས་བྱ་ཕྲན་ཚེགས་རེ་བཤད་འདོད་དེ།

that sometimes a small advantage someplace in life

མི་ཚེའི་གོ་རིམ་གང་ཞིག་ལས་

རང་གི་དགེ་མཚན་ཆུང་ཆུང་རེས་ཀྱང་

can yield tremendous results someplace else.

ཡུལ་གཞན་ཞིག་ཏུ་ཁྱེད་ལ་བློ་ཡུལ་འདས་པའི་འབྲས་བཟང་སྟེར་སྲིད།
