I'm used to thinking of the TED audience

as a wonderful collection of some of the most effective,

intelligent, intellectual, savvy,

worldly and innovative people in the world.

And I think that's true.

وه‌ پێم وایه‌ ئه‌وه‌ش راسته‌

However, I also have reason to believe that many, if not most, of you

به‌ڵام منیش هۆیه‌كى خۆم هه‌یه‌ كه‌ بڕوا بكه‌م

كه‌ زۆر له‌ ئێوه‌، ئه‌گه‌ر زۆرینه‌تان نه‌بێ

are actually tying your shoes incorrectly.

پێڵاوه‌كانتان به‌ هه‌ڵه‌ ده‌به‌ستن

پێكه‌نین

(Laughter)

Now I know that seems ludicrous.

ئێستا ئه‌زانم كه‌ شتێكى پێکەنین ئامێزە

ئه‌زانم كه‌ شتێكى پێکەنیناوییە

I know that seems ludicrous.

And believe me, I lived the same sad life until about three years ago.

بڕوام پێبكه‌ن، منیش بە هەمان ئەو ناخۆشیانەی ژیاندا تێپەڕیوم

تاكو نزیكه‌ى سێ ساڵ له‌مه‌و به‌ر

And what happened to me

ئه‌وه‌ى كه‌ به‌سه‌رمدا هات

was I bought, what was for me, a very expensive pair of shoes.

ئەوە بوو كه‌ جووتێك پێڵاوى زۆر گران به‌هام كڕى بۆ خۆم

But those shoes came with round nylon laces,

به‌ڵام قه‌یتانه‌كانى جووته‌ پێڵاوه‌كه‌م خریڵه‌ى نایلۆن بوون

and I couldn't keep them tied.

نه‌مده‌توانى به‌ توندكراوه‌یى بیانپارێزم

So I went back to the store and said to the owner,

بۆیه‌ چوومه‌وه‌ لاى پێڵاو فرۆشه‌كه‌ و پێم ووت

"I love the shoes, but I hate the laces."

پێڵاوه‌كانم خۆش ده‌وێن به‌ڵام قه‌یتانه‌كان نا

He took a look and said, "Oh, you're tying them wrong."

ئه‌ویش سه‌یرێكى به‌ستنى قه‌یتانه‌كان كرد و ووتى "تۆ به‌ هه‌ڵه‌ به‌ستووته‌"

تا ئه‌و ساته‌

Now up until that moment,

I would have thought that, by age 50,

وا بیرم ده‌كرده‌وه‌ كه‌ له‌ 50 سالى ته‌مه‌نمدا

one of the life skills that I had really nailed

یه‌كێك له‌ هه‌ره‌ پیشه‌كانى ژیانم

was tying my shoes.

به‌ستنى پێڵاوه‌كانم بوو

(Laughter)

But not so -- let me demonstrate.

به‌ڵام وانه‌بوو ، با پیشاندان بده‌م

ئه وه رێگاكه یه

This is the way

كه‌ زۆربه‌مان وا پێڵاوه‌كانمان ده‌به‌ستین

that most of us were taught to tie our shoes.

Now as it turns out -- thank you.

ئێستا كه‌ تو‌ندیان ده‌كه‌ى

(Applause)

Wait, there's more.

بوه‌ستن ، زیاتریش له‌وه‌

As it turns out --

كه‌ توندیان ده‌كه‌ى

(Laughter)

there's a strong form and a weak form of this knot,

گرێى توند و گرێى خاو هه‌یه‌

ئێمه‌ش فێركراوین به‌ خاوه‌كه‌ بیبه‌ستین

and we were taught the weak form.

And here's how to tell.

ئیًستاش با بۆتان بڵێم

If you pull the strands at the base of the knot,

ئه‌گه‌ر باڵه‌كان له‌ ناوه‌وه‌ راكێشى

you will see that the bow will orient itself

ئه‌وا باڵه‌كان خۆیان رێك ده‌خه‌ن

down the long axis of the shoe.

بۆ خواره‌وه‌ى ئاراسته‌ى پێڵاوه‌كه‌

That's the weak form of the knot.

ئه‌وه‌ خاوى گرێه‌كه‌یه‌

But not to worry.

به ڵام نیگه‌ران مه‌بن

If we start over

ئه‌گه‌ر جارێكى تر ده‌ست پێبكه‌ینه‌وه‌

and simply go the other direction around the bow,

به‌ڵام به‌ ئاراسته‌كه‌ى تر دا بیكیه‌ن

به‌ خولاوه‌ى گرێیه‌كه‌

گرێیه‌ تونده‌كه‌مان ده‌ست ده‌كه‌وێت

we get this, the strong form of the knot.

وه‌ ئه‌گه‌ر قه‌یتانه‌كان له‌ ژێر گرێیه‌كه‌ دا بنێین

And if you pull the cords under the knot,

you will see that the bow orients itself

ده‌بینین گرێیه‌كه‌ خۆى توند ده‌كاته‌وه‌

له‌گه‌ڵ ئاراسته‌ى شاقولى پێڵاوه‌كه‌

along the transverse axis of the shoe.

This is a stronger knot.

ئه‌وه‌ به‌ هێزترین به‌ستانه‌ كه‌ زۆر به‌ كه‌مى شل و خاو ده‌بێته‌وه‌

It will come untied less often.

كه‌متر شه‌رمه‌زارت ده‌كات

It will let you down less, and not only that, it looks better.

نه‌ك هه‌ر ئه‌وه‌ش ، به‌ڵكو باشتریش ده‌رده‌كه‌وێت

We're going to do this one more time.

با جارێكى تریش تاقى كه‌ینه‌وه‌

(Applause)

چه‌پڵه‌

سه‌ره‌تا هه‌ر وه‌ك دیزانین

Start as usual --

(Applause)

go the other way around the loop.

به‌ رێگایه‌یكه‌ى تر بیخولێنه‌وه‌

This is a little hard for children,

كه‌مێك قورسه‌ بۆ مناڵان

but I think you can handle it.

به‌ڵام پێم وایه‌ ده‌توانن بیكه‌ن

Pull the knot.

گرێیه‌كه‌ رابكێشه‌

There it is: the strong form of the shoe knot.

ئه‌وه‌تا ، گرێى توند

Now, in keeping with today's theme,

ئێستاش ، هه‌ر له‌گه‌ڵ بابه‌تى ئه‌مڕۆماند

I'd like to point out -- something you already know --

ده‌مه‌وێ ئامه‌ژه‌ به‌وه‌ بكه‌م وه‌ خۆشتانیش ئه‌یزانن

that sometimes a small advantage someplace in life

هه‌ندێك جار بچووكترین سوود

شوێنێك له‌ ژیاندا

can yield tremendous results someplace else.

ئه‌نجامى زۆر گه‌وره‌ترى ده‌بێت له‌ شوێنێكى تر

(Laughter)

Live long and prosper.
