I have the answer to a question that we've all asked.

Why is it that the letter X

Now I know we learned that in math class,

but now it's everywhere in the culture --

Where'd that come from?

အဲဒီ X ဆိုတာ ဘယ်က ရောက်လာတာပါလဲ

About six years ago

ကျွန်တော် လွန်ခဲ့တ ဲ့ခြောက်နှစ်လောက်က

I decided that I would learn Arabic,

အာရပ် ဘာသာစကားကို လေ့လာမယ်လို့ ဆုံးဖြတ်လိုက်ပါတယ်

which turns out to be a supremely logical language.

အဲဒီဘာသာစကားက အဆင့်မြင့်မားစွာ ယုတ္တိဗေဒဆန်တဲ့ ဘာသာစကားတစ်ခုဖြစ်နေပါတယ်

To write a word or a phrase

အာရပ် ဘာသာစကားမှာ စကားလုံးတစ်လုံး၊

or a sentence in Arabic

စကားစုတစ်ခု၊ ဝါကျတစ်ကြောင်းရေးဖို့ဆိုတာ

is like crafting an equation,

ညီမျှခြင်းတစ်ခုကို ညှိုနှိုင်းဖန်တီးယူရသလိုပါပဲ

because every part is extremely precise

ဘာလို့လဲဆိုတော့ အစိတ်အပိုင်းတစ်ခုစီတိုင်းက အလွန်တရာတိကျလှပြီး

and carries a lot of information.

အချက်အလက်တ ွေအများကြီးကို သယ်ဆောင်ပေးလို့ပါ

That's one of the reasons

ဒါဟာ ကျွန်တော်တို့ အနောက်တိုင်းက လာတယ်လို့ထင်နေကြတဲ့

so much of what we've come to think of

as Western science and mathematics and engineering

တကယ်တမ်းမှာတော့ ခရစ်တော်ပေါ်ပြီးခေတ် အစောဆုံးရာစုနှစ်တွေမှာ

was really worked out in the first few centuries of the Common Era

ပါရှန်းလူမျိုး၊ အာရပ်လူမျိုးတွေနဲ့ တူရကီလူမျိုးတွေက

by the Persians and the Arabs and the Turks.

လေ့လာဖော်ထုတ်ခဲ့တာဖြစ်နေရခြင်းရဲ့ အကြောင်းရင်းတွေထဲကတစ်ခုပါ

This includes the little system in Arabic

ဒီအထဲမှာ တစ်ခုအပါအဝင်ကတော့

called al-jebra.

And al-jebr roughly translates to

"the system for reconciling disparate parts."

"မျိုးမတူသော အစိတ်အပိုင်းများကို ပေါင်းစည်းပေးရန်စနစ်" လို့ဆိုပါတယ်

Al-jebr finally came into English as algebra.

အယ်ဂျာဘရာ ဟာနောက်ဆုံးမှာတော့ အင်္ဂလိပ်ဘာသာစကားဆီကို အယ်ဂျီဘရာ ( algebra ) အက္ခရာသင်္ချာ အနေနဲ့ရောက်လာပါတယ်

One example among many.

ဒါကတော့ သာဓကတွေအများကြီးထဲက တစ်ခုပါ

The Arabic texts containing this mathematical wisdom

ဒီ သင်္ချာဆိုင်ရာ အသိအမြင်တွေပါဝင်တဲ့ အာရပ် စာသားတွေဟာ

finally made their way to Europe --

နောက်ဆုံးမှာ ဥရောပတိုက်ကို ရောက်ရှိလာပါတယ်

which is to say Spain --

ပြောရမယ်ဆိုရင် ၁၁ နဲ့၁၂ ရာစုတွေမှာ

in the 11th and 12th centuries.

စပိန်ကို ရောက်လာတာပါ

And when they arrived

သူတို့လည်းရောက်လာရော

there was tremendous interest

ဒီအသိအမြင်တွေကို ဥရောပဘာသာ စကားတစ်ခုခုဆီ

in translating this wisdom

ဘာသာပြန်ဖို့ စိတ်အားထက်သန်မှု

into a European language.

ကြီးကြီးမားမားဖြစ်လာပါတယ်

But there were problems.

ဒါပေမဲ့ ပြဿနာတွေရှိနေပါတယ်

One problem

ပြဿနာတစ်ခုကတော့

is there are some sounds in Arabic

အာရပ် ဘာသာစကားမှာ ဥရောပသားတွေရဲ့အသံအိုးအတွက်

that just don't make it through a European voice box

များများစားစား မလေ့ကျင့်ဘဲနဲ့

without lots of practice.

ထွက်လို့မရတဲ့အသံတွေ ရှိနေပါတယ်

Trust me on that one.

ဒီတစ်ခုကိုတော့ ကျွန်တော်ပြောတာယုံလိုက်ပါခင်ဗျာ

Also, those very sounds

ဒါတင်မက ဥရောပဘာသာစကားတွေမှာ ရှိတဲ့အက္ခရာတွေနဲ့

tend not to be represented

ကိုယ်စားပြုဖော်ပြလို့မရတဲ့ အသံတွေလည်း

by the characters that are available in European languages.

ရှိနေပါသေးတယ်

Here's one of the culprits.

ပြဿနာအရင်းခံတွေထဲက တစ်ခုက ဒီမှာပါ

This is the letter sheen,

ဒါကတော့ " SHeen " (ရှင်း) ဆိုတဲ့စာလုံးပါ

and it makes the sound we think of as SH -- "sh."

" SH " (ရှ) လို့ကျွန်တော်တို့ ယူဆတဲ့ အသံမျိုးထွက်ပါတယ်

It's also the very first letter

၎င်းဟာ အင်္ဂလိပ်စကားလုံး "something" လို

of the word shayun,

တစ်စုံတစ်ရာ၊ အဓိပ္ပာယ်မဖွင့်ဆိုနိုင်သောအရာ၊

which means "something"

မသိသော အရာတစ်ခုလို့ဆိုလိုတဲ့

just like the the English word "something" --

ရှေးလန်း ဆိုတဲ့စကားလုံးရဲ့

some undefined, unknown thing.

ရှေ့ဆုံးအက္ခရာလည်းဖြစ်ပါတယ်

Now in Arabic,

အာရပ် ဘာသာစကားမှာတော့

we can make this definite

၄င်းစကားလုံးမှာ တိကျအညွှန်းစကားလုံး “al”( အယ်လ်) ကိုပေါင်းထည့်လိုက်ပြီး

by adding the definite article "al."

တိကျတဲ့အရာဖြစ်အောင် လုပ်လိုက်လို့ရပါတယ်

So this is al-shayun --

ဒီလိုဆိုတော့ “al-shalan” (အယ်ရှေးလန်း) ဆိုပြီးဖြစ်လာပါတယ်

the unknown thing.

မသိသော ဤအရာပေါ့

And this is a word that appears throughout early mathematics,

၎င်းဟာ ဒီဆယ်ရာစု “derivation of proofs” (ဆင့်ကဲသက်သေပြချက်)လို

such as this 10th-century derivation of roots.

ရှေးဦး သင်္ချာပညာရပ် တစ်လျှောက်လုံးမှာ ပါဝင်နေတဲ့စာလုံး တစ်လုံးဖြစ်ပါတယ်

The problem for the Medieval Spanish scholars

ဒီအချက်အလက်တွေကို ဘာသာပြန်ဖို့တာဝန်ကျလာတဲ့

who were tasked with translating this material

အလယ်ခေတ် စပိန်စာပေပညာရှင်တွေအတွက် ပြဿနာကတော့

is that the letter sheen and the word shayun

ရှင်းဆိုတဲ့အက္ခရာနဲ့ ရှေးလန်း ဆိုတဲ့ စာလုံးတွေကို

can't be rendered into Spanish

စပိန်ဘာသာကို ပြန်ဆိုလို့လို့မရတာပါပဲ

because Spanish doesn't have that SH,

အကြောင်းက စပိန်ဘာသာမှာ SH အသံ၊

that "sh" sound.

"sh" (ရှ) ဆိုတဲ့အသံမရှိလို့ပါ

So by convention,

ထုံးစံအတိုင်း သူတို့ဟာ

they created a rule in which

ရှေးဟောင်း ဂန္ဓဝင် ဂရိစာပေကနေ အက္ခရာအနေနဲ့

they borrowed the CK sound, "ck" sound,

“ kai” ( ခိုင် )လို့ရေးတဲ့ “ck” ( ခ) ဆိုတဲ့ အသံကို

from the classical Greek

မွေးစားလိုက်တဲ့ စည်းစနစ်တစ်ခုကို

in the form of the letter Kai.

သတ်မှတ်ခဲ့ပါတယ်

Later when this material was translated

နောက်ပိုင်း ဒီစာပေတွေကို အများသုံး ဥရောပဘာသာစကား

into a common European language,

တစ်ခုဆီကို ဘာသာလည်းပြန်ရော

which is to say Latin,

ပြောရရင် လက်တင်ဘာသာစကား ပေါ့နော်

they simply replaced the Greek Kai

သူတို့က ဂရိစာလုံး Kai (ခိုင်) ဆိုတာကို

with the Latin X.

လက်တင်စာလုံး X (အက်စ်)ဆိုတာနဲ့ ဒီအတိုင်းလေး အစားထိုးလိုက်ပါတော့တယ်

And once that happened,

အဲဒီလို့ဖြစ်သွားတဲ့ အချိန်ကစလို့

once this material was in Latin,

ဒီစာလုံး လက်တင်ဘာသာစကားဆီ ရောက်လာချိန်မှစလို့

it formed the basis for mathematics textbooks

နှစ်ပေါင်း ခြောက်ရာနီးပါးကြာအောင် ဒီစာလုံးဟာ

for almost 600 years.

သင်္ချာပြဌာန်းစာအုပ်တွေရဲ့ အခြေခံဖြစ်လာပါတော့တယ်

But now we have the answer to our question.

ဒါပေမဲ့ အခုတော့ ကျွန်တော်တို့မေးခွန်းအတွက် ကျွန်တော်တို့မှာအဖြေရှိသွားပါပြီ

Why is it that X is the unknown?

အဲဒီ X က ဘာလို့များ မသိကိန်းဖြစ်နေတာပါလဲ

X is the unknown

X က မသိကိန်းဖြစ်ရခြင်းရဲ့ အကြောင်းရင်း ဇစ်မြစ်ကတော့

because you can't say "sh" in Spanish.

စပိန်ဘာသာစကားမှာ "ရှ" သံထွက်လို့မရလို့ပါပဲ

And I thought that was worth sharing.
