I have the answer to a question that we've all asked.

وەڵامی پرسیارێکم هەیە کە هەموومان کردوومانە.

The question is,

پرسیارەکە ئەوەیە،

Why is it that the letter X

بۆچی پیتی x

represents the unknown?

نەزانراو دەنوێنێت؟

Now I know we learned that in math class,

ئێستا من دەزانم کە لە وانەی بیرکاری فێری بووین،

but now it's everywhere in the culture --

بەڵام ئێستا لە هەموو شوێنێکدایە لە

The X prize, the X-Files,

شارستانی -- خەڵاتی x، فایلی x،

Project X, TEDx.

پلانی ئێکس، تێد ئێکس.

Where'd that come from?

ئەوە لەکوێ هاتووە؟

About six years ago

شەش ساڵ پێش ئێستا

I decided that I would learn Arabic,

بڕیارمدا زمانی عەڕەبی فێربم،

which turns out to be a supremely logical language.

کە وا دەردەکەوێت زمانێکی زۆر لۆژیکی بێت.

To write a word or a phrase

بۆ نووسینی وشە یان گرێ

or a sentence in Arabic

یان ڕستە بە عەڕەبی

is like crafting an equation,

وەک دروستکردنی هاوکێشە وایە،

because every part is extremely precise

چونکە هەموو بەشەکان بەتەواوی وردن

and carries a lot of information.

و زانیاری زۆر هەڵدەگرن.

That's one of the reasons

ئەوە یەکێکە لە هۆکارەکان

so much of what we've come to think of

زۆر لەو شتانەی کە ئێمە بیری

as Western science and mathematics and engineering

لێدەکەینەوە وەک زانستی ڕۆژئاوا و بیرکاری و ئەندازیاری

was really worked out in the first few centuries of the Common Era

بە ڕاستی لە چەند سەدەی یەکەمی سەردەمی هاوبەشدا کاری لەسەر کراوە

by the Persians and the Arabs and the Turks.

لەلایەن فارسەکان و عەڕەبەکان و تورکەکان.

This includes the little system in Arabic

سیستەمە بچوکەکە لەخۆدەگرێت بە عەرەبی

called al-jebra.

پێی دەوترێ جەبر.

And al-jebr roughly translates to

و جەبر بەنزیکەی وەرگێڕدراوە بۆ

"the system for reconciling disparate parts."

“سیستەمی یەکگرتنی پارچە جیاکان.”

Al-jebr finally came into English as algebra.

لەکۆتایدا جەبر گەیشتە ناو ئینگلیز وەک جەبر

One example among many.

یەک نموونە لەنێوان زۆر.

The Arabic texts containing this mathematical wisdom

دەقە عەڕەبییەکان ئەو داناییە بیرکارییە لەخۆ دەگرن

finally made their way to Europe --

لەکۆتایدا ڕێگەی خۆیان بۆ ئەوروپا

which is to say Spain --

کردەووە-- واتا ئیسپانیا--

in the 11th and 12th centuries.

لە سەدەکانی 11 و 12.

And when they arrived

و کاتێک گەیشتن

there was tremendous interest

بایەخێکی زۆر گەورە هەبوو

in translating this wisdom

لە وەرگێڕانی ئەم داناییەدا

into a European language.

بۆ زمانێکی ئەوروپی.

But there were problems.

بەڵام کێشە هەبوو.

One problem

کێشەیەک

is there are some sounds in Arabic

هەندێک دەنگ هەیە لە عەڕەبی

that just don't make it through a European voice box

کە لەناو گەرووی ئەوروپیەکان دەرنابڕدرێت

without lots of practice.

بەبێ ڕاهێنانی زۆر.

Trust me on that one.

باوەڕم پێ بکەن دەربارەی ئەوە.

Also, those very sounds

هەروەها، ئەو دەنگانە

tend not to be represented

ناتوانرێت پێشانبدرێت

by the characters that are available in European languages.

بەهۆی ئەو پیتانەی کە لە زمانەکانی ئەوروپادا بەردەستن.

Here's one of the culprits.

ئەوە یەکێکە لە هۆکاری کێشەکان.

This is the letter sheen,

ئەمە پیتی شین ە،

and it makes the sound we think of as SH -- "sh."

و ئەو دەنگە دروست دەکات کە وەک ش - “ش” بیری لێدەکەینەوە.

It's also the very first letter

هەروەها ئەوە یەکەم پیتە

of the word shayun,

بۆ وشەی شتێک،

which means "something"

کە بە مانای “شتێک” دێت

just like the the English word "something" --

وەک وشەی “شتێک” ی ئینگلیزی --

some undefined, unknown thing.

هەندێک پێناسە نەکراو، شتێکی نەزانراو.

Now in Arabic,

لە عەڕەبیدا،

we can make this definite

دەتوانین ئەمە ڕونبکەینەوە

by adding the definite article "al."

بە زیادکردنی ئامرازی ناسراوی “ئەل”

So this is al-shayun --

کەواتە ئەمە شتێکی نادیارە--

the unknown thing.

شتە نەزانراوەکە.

And this is a word that appears throughout early mathematics,

و ئەوەش وشەیەکە کە بەدرێژایی زانستی بیرکاری کۆن دەردەکەوێت،

such as this 10th-century derivation of roots.

وەک ئەو شیتەڵکردنەی ڕەگەکان لە سەدەی دەیەم.

The problem for the Medieval Spanish scholars

کێشەکە بۆ زانایانی ئیسپانی سەدەی ناوەڕاست

who were tasked with translating this material

کە ئەرکی وەرگێڕانی ئەو ماددەیەیان وەرگرتبوو

is that the letter sheen and the word shayun

ئەوەیە کە پیتی ش و وشەی شتێک

can't be rendered into Spanish

ناتواندرێت بگۆڕدرێت بۆ ئیسپانی

because Spanish doesn't have that SH,

چونکە ئیسپانی ئەو (ش)ەی نییە،

that "sh" sound.

ئەو دەنگە “ش” ە.

So by convention,

بەهۆی کۆبوونەوە،

they created a rule in which

یاسایەکیان دروست کرد کە

they borrowed the CK sound, "ck" sound,

ئەوان دەنگی س ک یان وەرگرت، دەنگی “ک”،

from the classical Greek

لە یۆنانی کلاسیکی

in the form of the letter Kai.

لە شێوەی پیتی کەی.

Later when this material was translated

دواتر کاتێک ئەو ئامرازە وەرگێڕدرا

into a common European language,

بۆ زمانێکی باوی ئەوروپی،

which is to say Latin,

کە دەڵێین لاتین،

they simply replaced the Greek Kai

ئەوان شوێنی کەی یۆنانیان گۆڕی

with the Latin X.

لەگەڵ X ی لاتین.

And once that happened,

و کاتێک کە ڕوویدا،

once this material was in Latin,

کاتێک ئەو ماددە بە لاتینی بوو،

it formed the basis for mathematics textbooks

بنەمای کتێبی بیرکاری پێکهێنا

for almost 600 years.

بۆ نزیکەی 600 ساڵ.

But now we have the answer to our question.

بەڵام ئێستا وەڵامی پرسیارەکەمان هەیە.

Why is it that X is the unknown?

بۆچی X نەزانراوە؟

X is the unknown

X نەزانرەوە

because you can't say "sh" in Spanish.

چونکە ناتوانیت بڵێیت (ش) لە ئیسپانی.

And I thought that was worth sharing.

و وا بیرمکردەووە کە ئەوە شایەنی هاوبەشی پێکردنە.
