I have the answer to a question that we've all asked.

Now I know we learned that in math class,

Where'd that come from?

About six years ago

ஆறு ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்,

I decided that I would learn Arabic,

which turns out to be a supremely logical language.

To write a word or a phrase

அதில் ஒரு வார்த்தையையோ

or a sentence in Arabic

அல்லது ஒரு வாக்கியத்தையோ எழுவதற்கு

is like crafting an equation,

because every part is extremely precise

and carries a lot of information.

That's one of the reasons

so much of what we've come to think of

One example among many.

The Arabic texts containing this mathematical wisdom

அரபி மொழியில் இருந்த இந்த கணித அறிவாற்றலை

finally made their way to Europe --

ஐரோப்பியர்கள் கற்க விரும்பினார்கள் --

which is to say Spain --

11 மற்றும் 12 ஆம் நூற்றாண்டுகளில் --

in the 11th and 12th centuries.

And when they arrived

there was tremendous interest

in translating this wisdom

But there were problems.

One problem

is there are some sounds in Arabic

Also, those very sounds

Here's one of the culprits.

This is the letter sheen,

"ஷீன்" என்ற எழுத்து,

and it makes the sound we think of as SH -- "sh."

அது  "இஷ்" என்று உச்சரிக்கும்பொழுது தோன்றும் ஒலி.

It's also the very first letter

அத்துடன் அது

of the word shayun,

'ஷேலன்' வார்த்தையின் முதலெழுத்து.

which means "something"

'ஷேலன்' என்பதன் பொருள், "ஏதோ ஒன்று"

just like the the English word "something" --

ஆங்கிலத்தின் 'சம்திங்' என்ற வார்த்தையின் அதே அர்த்தம்தான்.

some undefined, unknown thing.

வரையறுக்கப்படாத, தெரியாத ஏதோ ஒன்றினைக் குறிக்கிறது.

Now in Arabic,

இன்று அரபிய மொழியில்,

we can make this definite

இதனை நாம் உருவகப்படுத்த முடியும்.

by adding the definite article "al."

'அல்' என்ற எழுத்தை வார்த்தைக்கு முன் எழுதினால்

So this is al-shayun --

அது 'அல்-ஷேலன்' என மாறும்.

the unknown thing.

அதற்கு 'அறியப்படாத ஒன்று' என்ற அர்த்தம்.

And this is a word that appears throughout early mathematics,

ஆரம்பக்கால கணிதம் முழுவதிலும் இந்த வார்த்தை காணப்படுகிறது,

such as this 10th-century derivation of roots.

10 ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் வரையறுக்கப்பட்ட மூலாதாரம் ஒன்றிலும் இது காணப்படுகிறது.

The problem for the Medieval Spanish scholars

இடைக்காலத்தில் வாழ்ந்த ஸ்பானிஷ் மொழி அறிஞர்களுக்கு

who were tasked with translating this material

is that the letter sheen and the word shayun

ஷீன் என்ற எழுத்தையும், ஷேலன் என்ற வார்த்தையையும்

can't be rendered into Spanish

ஸ்பானிஷில் எழுத முடியாமல் போனது.

because Spanish doesn't have that SH,

அதன் காரணம், ஸ்பானிஷ் மொழியில் "இஷ்"

that "sh" sound.

என்ற ஒலியைக் குறிக்கும் எழுத்து இல்லாததே.

So by convention,

they created a rule in which

they borrowed the CK sound, "ck" sound,

which is to say Latin,

they simply replaced the Greek Kai

with the Latin X.

And once that happened,
