I have the answer to a question that we've all asked.

وەڵامی ئەو پرسیارەم لە لایە کە هەمومان کردومانە.

The question is,

پرسیارەکە ئەوەیە،

Why is it that the letter X

بۆچی پیتی ئێکس

represents the unknown?

کراوە بە نیشانەی نەزانراو؟

Now I know we learned that in math class,

دەزانم کە ئەمە لە وانەی بیرکارییدا فێری بوین،

but now it's everywhere in the culture --

بەڵام ئەمە ئێستا لە هەمو شوێنێکی کلتورەکەدا يە --

The X prize, the X-Files,

خەڵاتی ئێکس، دۆسیەكانى ئێکس،

Project X, TEDx.

پرۆژەی ئێکس، تێد ئێکس.

Where'd that come from?

ئەمە لە چییەوە هاتووە؟

About six years ago

نزیکەی شەش ساڵ لەمەوبەر

I decided that I would learn Arabic,

بڕیارم دا خۆم فێری زمانی عەرەبی بکەم،

which turns out to be a supremely logical language.

کە دەرکەوت زمانێکی زۆر لۆجیکی بێت.

To write a word or a phrase

بۆ نوسینی وشەیەک یان دەستەواژەیەک

or a sentence in Arabic

یان رستەیەک بە زمانی عەرەبی

is like crafting an equation,

وەک نوسینی هاوکێشەیەک وایە،

because every part is extremely precise

چونکە هەر یەک لە بەشەکانی زۆر وردن

and carries a lot of information.

و بڕێکی زۆر لە زانیاری هەڵدەگرن.

That's one of the reasons

ئەمە یەکێکە لە هۆکارەکان

so much of what we've come to think of

زۆربەی ئەو شتانەی کە بیریان لێ دەکەینەوە

as Western science and mathematics and engineering

وەک زانستی رۆژئاوایی و بیرکاری و ئەندازیاری

was really worked out in the first few centuries of the Common Era

لە راستیدا لە سەدە یەکەمینەکانی سەردەمی هاوبەش

by the Persians and the Arabs and the Turks.

لە لایەن فارس و عەرەب و توركەوە کاریان لەسەر کراوە.

This includes the little system in Arabic

یەکێک لەوانەش سیستمە عەرەبییەکەیە

called al-jebra.

(کە پێی دەڵێن جەبر (الجبر.

And al-jebr roughly translates to

جەبر بە شێوەیەکی گشتی مانای ئەوەیە

"the system for reconciling disparate parts."

"سیستەمى پێکەوە بەستنەوەی بەشە لەیەک جیاکان."

Al-jebr finally came into English as algebra.

جەبر کە دێتە ناو زمانی ئینگلیزی دەبێت بە ئەلجێبرا.

One example among many.

ئەمە نمونەیەکە لە خەروارێک.

The Arabic texts containing this mathematical wisdom

دەقە عەرەبییەکان ئەم ژیرییە بیرکارییەیان تێدایە

finally made their way to Europe --

کە دواجار رێگەی خۆی بۆ ناو ئەوروپا کردۆتەوە -

which is to say Spain --

با بڵێین بۆ ئیسپانیا -

in the 11th and 12th centuries.

لە سەدەی (١١) و (١٢) ەم دا.

And when they arrived

و کاتێ گەیشتن

there was tremendous interest

ئارەزویەکی زەبەلاح هەبو

in translating this wisdom

بۆ وەرگێڕانی ئەم ژیرییە

into a European language.

بۆ سەر زمانێكى ئەوروپی.

But there were problems.

بەڵام لەوێ چەند کێشەیەک هەبون.

One problem

یەکێک لە کێشەکان

is there are some sounds in Arabic

ئەويە کە چەند دەنگێک هەن لە زمانی عەرەبیدا

that just don't make it through a European voice box

کە لە سندوقی دەنگی ئەوروپیدا بونی نیە

without lots of practice.

ئەگەر راهێنانێکی زۆری لەسەر نەکرێت.

Trust me on that one.

لەمەیاندا بڕوام پێ بکەن.

Also, those very sounds

هەروەها، ئەم هەمو دەنگانە

tend not to be represented

نانوسرێن

by the characters that are available in European languages.

بەو پیتانەی کە لە زمانە ئەوروپییەکاندا هەن.

Here's one of the culprits.

ئەمە یەکێکە لە تاوانبارەکان.

This is the letter sheen,

ئەمە پیتی شینە.

and it makes the sound we think of as SH -- "sh."

دەنگی (ش) دروست دەکات کە ئێمە بەم جۆرە دەینوێنین "sh"

It's also the very first letter

هەروەها ئەمە یەکەم پیتی

of the word shayun,

وشەی شەعلانە "شيء"

which means "something"

کە واتە "شتێک"

just like the the English word "something" --

وەک وشە "شتێک"ی ئینگلیزی وایە --

some undefined, unknown thing.

واتە شتێکی دیارینەکراو، نەزانراو.

Now in Arabic,

ئێستا لە زمانی عەرەبیدا،

we can make this definite

ئێمە دەتوانین ئەم شتە بکەین بە شتێکی دیاریکراو

by adding the definite article "al."

بە زیادکردنی ئامرازی ناساندن کە بریتییە لە "ال"

So this is al-shayun --

کەواتە ئەمە بو بە ئەلشەعلان "الشيء"

the unknown thing.

واتە شتە نەزانراوەکە.

And this is a word that appears throughout early mathematics,

ئەمەش ئەو وشەیەییە کە لە هەمو بیرکارییەکدا دەردەكەوێت

such as this 10th-century derivation of roots.

بۆ نمونە لەم دەرهێنانی سەلماندنەی سەدەی دەیەم دا.

The problem for the Medieval Spanish scholars

کێشەی زاناکانی سەدەکانی ناوەڕاستی ئیسپانیا

who were tasked with translating this material

کە ئەرکی وەرگێڕانی ئەم بابەتانەیان لە ئەستۆدا بو

is that the letter sheen and the word shayun

ئەوە بو کە پیتی (ش) و وشەی (شەعلان)

can't be rendered into Spanish

نەدەتوانرا بگۆڕێن بۆ سەر زمانی ئیسپانی

because Spanish doesn't have that SH,

چونکە زمانی ئیسپانی ئەو (ش)ە نیە،

that "sh" sound.

کە دەنگی (ش) دروست دەکات.

So by convention,

بۆیە بەپێی رێککەوتن،

they created a rule in which

یاسایەکیان دروست کرد کە تیایدا

they borrowed the CK sound, "ck" sound,

دەنگی (ک) یان هێنا،

from the classical Greek

لە زمانی یۆنانی کۆنەوە

in the form of the letter Kai.

لە شێوەی پیتی (کای) دایاننا

Later when this material was translated

دواتر کاتێ بابەتەکە وەردەگێڕدرا

into a common European language,

بۆ زمانێكى باوى ئەوروپی،

which is to say Latin,

کە با بڵێین لاتینی بو،

they simply replaced the Greek Kai

بە کورتییەکەی پیتی (ک) ی یۆنانییان لابرد

with the Latin X.

و پیتی (ئێکسی) لاتینییان لەجێی دانا.

And once that happened,

و کاتێ ئەمە رویدا،

once this material was in Latin,

کاتێ بابەتەکە بو بە لاتینی،

it formed the basis for mathematics textbooks

بو بە بنەمای پەرتوكە بیرکارییەکان

for almost 600 years.

بۆ ماوەی نزیکەی ٦٠٠ ساڵ.

But now we have the answer to our question.

بەڵام ئێمە ئێستا وەڵامی پرسیارەکەمان لە لایە.

Why is it that X is the unknown?

بۆچی ئەو (ئێکس)ە نیشانەی نەزانراوە؟

X is the unknown

ئێکس نیشانەی نەزانراوە

because you can't say "sh" in Spanish.

"چونکە لە زمانی ئیسپانیدا ناتوانیت بڵێیت "ش.

And I thought that was worth sharing.

و من ئەمەم بە شایستەی باسکردن زانی.
