I have the answer to a question that we've all asked.

Now I know we learned that in math class,

હું માનું છું કે આપણે ગણિતના વર્ગમાં તો શીખ્યા હતા,

but now it's everywhere in the culture --

પરંતુ હવે તો તે દરેક વાતમાં વપરાતું થઇ ગયું છે --

The X prize, the X-Files,

X ઇનામ, X-ફાઇલ્સ,

Project X, TEDx.

X પ્રકલ્પ, ટીઇડીx.

Where'd that come from?

આ x ક્યાંથી આવી પડેલ છે?

About six years ago

આજ્થી લગભગ છ વર્ષ પહેલાં

I decided that I would learn Arabic,

મેં ઍરૅબીક શીખવાનું નક્કી કર્યું,

which turns out to be a supremely logical language.

જે સહુથી વધારે તાર્કીક ભાષા પરવડી હતી.

To write a word or a phrase

ઍરૅબીકમાં કોઇપણ શબ્દ કે શબ્દસમુહ કે

or a sentence in Arabic

વાક્ય લખવું હોય તો

is like crafting an equation,

તે કોઇ સમીકરણ રચવા જેવું પરવડે છે,

because every part is extremely precise

કારણકે દરેક ભાગ એકદમ નિશ્ચિત છે

and carries a lot of information.

અને ખુબ માહિતિ ધરાવે છે.

That's one of the reasons

એ એક કારણ છે

so much of what we've come to think of

જેને બધાંને આપણે પશ્ચિમનું વિજ્ઞાન અને

as Western science and mathematics and engineering

ગણિત અને ઍન્જીનીયરીંગ માનીએ છીએ

was really worked out in the first few centuries of the Common Era

by the Persians and the Arabs and the Turks.

This includes the little system in Arabic

Al-jebr finally came into English as algebra.

અલ-જિબ્ર આખરે અંગ્રેજીમાં ઍલ્જિબ્રા કહેવાયું.

One example among many.

જેના, ઘણા દાખલાઓ પૈકી એકઃ

The Arabic texts containing this mathematical wisdom

આ ગણિતીક જ્ઞાનસભર ઍરૅબીક ગ્રંથો

finally made their way to Europe --

આખરે ૧૧મી કે ૧૨મી સદીમાં

which is to say Spain --

યુરૉપ - ખાસ કરીને સ્પૅન -

in the 11th and 12th centuries.

પહોંચ્યા.

And when they arrived

અને જ્યારે ગ્રંથ આવ્યા ત્યારે

there was tremendous interest

તેમણે આ જ્ઞાનને યુરૉપીયન ભાષાઓમાં

in translating this wisdom

into a European language.

But there were problems.

One problem

એક તો સમસ્યા એ કે

is there are some sounds in Arabic

that just don't make it through a European voice box

જે યૂરૉપીયનની સ્વર પેટીમાંથી પૂરતા અભ્યાસ વિના

without lots of practice.

બહાર જ આવી ન શકે.

Trust me on that one.

આ બાબતે મારૉ પૂરો વિશ્વાસ કરજો.

Also, those very sounds

વળી, આ ઉચ્ચારો

tend not to be represented

યુરૉપીયન ભાષાઓમાંનાં ચિહ્નોની સાથે

by the characters that are available in European languages.

મેળ પણ નથી ખાતા.

Here's one of the culprits.

તેમાંનો એક ગુન્હેગાર આ રહ્યો.

This is the letter sheen,

એક શબ્દ છે ષીં,

and it makes the sound we think of as SH -- "sh."

જેનો ઉચ્ચાર આપણે જેને ષ - શ - સમજીએ એવો થાય.

It's also the very first letter

તે શલાન શબ્દનો

of the word shayun,

પહેલો અક્ષર છે,

which means "something"

જેનો અર્થ થાય છે અંગ્રેજીના "કંઇક" જેવો જ

just like the the English word "something" --

"કંઇક" થાય છે --

some undefined, unknown thing.

કશુંક અસ્પષ્ટ,અજાણ્યું.

Now in Arabic,

ઍરૅબીકમાં

we can make this definite

આપણે આને એક ચોક્કસ અનુચ્છેદ "અલ" ઉમેરીને

by adding the definite article "al."

નિશ્ચિત કરી શકીએ છીએ.

So this is al-shayun --

એટલે જેમ કે અલ - શલાન --

the unknown thing.

અસ્પષ્ટ વસ્તુ.

And this is a word that appears throughout early mathematics,

અને આ શબ્દ શરૂઆતનાં ગણિતમાં બધે જ જોવા મળે છે જેમ કે

such as this 10th-century derivation of roots.

૧૦મી સદીની સાબિતિઓની વ્યુત્પતિઓમાં.

The problem for the Medieval Spanish scholars

આ વસ્તુ સામગ્રીના અનુવાદનું કામ જેમને સોંપાયું હતું

who were tasked with translating this material

તે મધ્ય યુગના સ્પૅનિશ વિદ્વાનોની સમસ્યા એ હતી કે

is that the letter sheen and the word shayun

can't be rendered into Spanish

સ્પૅનિશમાં કંઇ જ મળતું ન હતું

because Spanish doesn't have that SH,

કારણકે સ્પૅનિશમાં ષ હતો જ નહીં,

that "sh" sound.

જેનો ઉચ્ચાર "ષ"(શ) થતો હોય.

So by convention,

એટલે પરંપરા મુજબ

they created a rule in which

જે નિયમ બન્યો હતો, તે મુજબ

they borrowed the CK sound, "ck" sound,

તેઓએ પ્રાચીન ગ્રીકમાંથી

from the classical Greek

સ્ક ઉચ્ચારવાળો

in the form of the letter Kai.

કૈ અક્ષર વાપર્યો.

Later when this material was translated

પછીથી જ્યારે બધી સામગ્રીનો સર્વસામાન્ય

into a common European language,

યુરૉપીયન ભાષામાં અનુવાદ કરાયો,

which is to say Latin,

જેમ કે લૅટીન,

they simply replaced the Greek Kai

ત્યારે ગ્રીક કૈની જગ્યાએ તેઓએ

with the Latin X.

લૅટીન X વાપર્યો.

And once that happened,

અને એક વાર તેમ થયું,

once this material was in Latin,

અને આ સામગ્રી લૅટીનમાં ઉપલબ્ધ થઇ ગઇ,

it formed the basis for mathematics textbooks

પછીથી તો તે લગભગ ૬૦૦ વર્ષ સુધી

for almost 600 years.

But now we have the answer to our question.

Why is it that X is the unknown?

X is the unknown

X એ અજ્ઞાતની ઓળખાણ એટલે છે કે

because you can't say "sh" in Spanish.

સ્પેનિશમાં "ષ" (શ) ઉચ્ચારી નથી શકાતો.
