One is the extraordinary evidence of human creativity

in all of the presentations that we've had

The second is that it's put us in a place

where we have no idea what's going to happen

I have an interest in education.

Actually, what I find is, everybody has an interest in education.

Don't you?

I find this very interesting.

If you're at a dinner party, and you say you work in education --

actually, you're not often at dinner parties, frankly.

If you work in education, you're not asked.

And you're never asked back, curiously. That's strange to me.

But if you are, and you say to somebody,

and you say you work in education,

But if you ask about their education, they pin you to the wall,

So I have a big interest in education, and I think we all do.

We have a huge vested interest in it,

partly because it's education that's meant to take us into this future

If you think of it,

Nobody has a clue,

what the world will look like in five years' time.

So the unpredictability, I think, is extraordinary.

And the third part of this is that we've all agreed, nonetheless,

and I want to talk about creativity.

My contention is that creativity now is as important in education as literacy,

I heard a great story recently -- I love telling it --

of a little girl who was in a drawing lesson.

She was six, and she was at the back, drawing,

সেদিন সে পিছনে বসে ছবি আঁকছিল,

and the teacher said this girl hardly ever paid attention,

তার শিক্ষিকা জানিয়েছেন এমনিতে মেয়েটা কখনোই মনোযোগ দিত না,

কিন্তু সেইদিন সে মনোযোগ দিচ্ছিল।

and in this drawing lesson, she did.

The teacher was fascinated.

She went over to her, and she said, "What are you drawing?"

And the girl said, "I'm drawing a picture of God."

When my son was four in England --

actually, he was four everywhere, to be honest.

If we're being strict about it, wherever he went, he was four that year.

He was in the Nativity play. Do you remember the story?

(Laughter)

No, it was big, it was a big story.

But James got the part of Joseph, which we were thrilled about.

They come in bearing gifts, gold, frankincense and myrrh.

They just switched.

The three boys came in, four-year-olds with tea towels on their heads.

তারা ওই বাক্সগুলোকে নিচে রাখলো,

They put these boxes down, and the first boy said, "I bring you gold."

প্রথম ছেলেটা বলল, "আমি তোমার জন্য সোনা এনেছি।"

And the second boy said, "I bring you myrrh."

দ্বিতীয় ছেলেটা বলল, "আমি তোমার জন্য ম্যার (সুগন্ধি নির্যাস) এনেছি।"

And the third boy said, "Frank sent this."

(Laughter)

আর তৃতীয় ছেলেটা বলল, "ফ্রাংক এটা পাঠিয়েছে" (হাসি)

What these things have in common is that kids will take a chance.

শিশুদের মধ্যে এখানে সাধারণ একটা ব্যাপার হল, ওরা সুযোগ নেয়।

If they don't know, they'll have a go.

ওরা যদি কিছু নাও জানে, তবুও ওরা তা চেষ্টা করে দেখে।

ঠিক বলেছি? ওরা ভুল করাকে ভয় পায় না।

Am I right? They're not frightened of being wrong.

আমি বলছি না যে ভুল করা আর সৃজনশীলতা একই কথা।

I don't mean to say that being wrong is the same thing as being creative.

What we do know is, if you're not prepared to be wrong,

আমরা যেটা জানি সেটা হল

you'll never come up with anything original --

if you're not prepared to be wrong.

And by the time they get to be adults, most kids have lost that capacity.

They have become frightened of being wrong.

And we run our companies like this.

We stigmatize mistakes.

আমরা ভুলকে কলঙ্কিত করি। আমরা এখন এমন

And we're now running national education systems

জাতীয় শিক্ষাব্যবস্থা চালাচ্ছি যেখানে ভুল করাকে

where mistakes are the worst thing you can make.

একবারেই নিকৃষ্ট হিসেবে ধরা হয়।

And the result is that we are educating people

আর তার ফল হল, আমরা মানুষকে শিক্ষিত করে তার নিজের

out of their creative capacities.

সৃজনশীলতার বাইরে এনে ফেলছি। পিকাসো বলে গেছেন --

Picasso once said this, he said that all children are born artists.

"সব শিশুই জন্মগতভাবে শিল্পী।" সমস্যাটা হল,

The problem is to remain an artist as we grow up.

বড় হওয়ার সাথে সাথে সেই শিল্পীসত্তাকে ধরে রাখা। আমি গভীরভাবে বিশ্বাস করি যে,

I believe this passionately, that we don't grow into creativity,

আমরা সৃজনশীলতার ভিতরে বেড়ে উঠি না, ক্রমান্বয়ে

we grow out of it.

আমরা এর বাইরে যেতে থাকি। ভালভাবে বললে, শিক্ষিত হয়ে আমরা এর বাইরে যেতে থাকি।

Or rather, we get educated out of it.

So why is this?

I lived in Stratford-on-Avon until about five years ago.

In fact, we moved from Stratford to Los Angeles.

So you can imagine what a seamless transition this was.

Actually, we lived in a place called Snitterfield,

which is where Shakespeare's father was born.

How annoying would that be?

Being sent to bed by his dad, to Shakespeare, "Go to bed, now!"

To William Shakespeare.

"পেন্সিলটা রেখে দাও।

"And put the pencil down!"

আর এভাবে কথা বলা বন্ধ কর। এটা সবাইকে মাথা খাচ্ছে।"

"And stop speaking like that."

(Laughter)

"It's confusing everybody."

(Laughter)

Anyway, we moved from Stratford to Los Angeles,

সেকথা থাক, আমরা স্টার্টফোর্ড থেকে লস এঞ্জেলস চলে এলাম,

and I just want to say a word about the transition.

আমার ছেলে আসতে চায়নি।

Actually, my son didn't want to come.

I've got two kids; he's 21 now, my daughter's 16.

আমার দুই সন্তান। ছেলের বয়স এখন ২১, মেয়েটার ১৬ ।

He didn't want to come to Los Angeles.

ছেলেটা আসতে চায়নি লস আঞ্জেলসে। ও পছন্দ করত,

He loved it, but he had a girlfriend in England.

কিন্তু ওর ইংল্যান্ডের এক প্রেমিকা ছিল। সে-ই ছিল আমার ছেলের জীবনের ভালবাসা, সারাহ।

This was the love of his life, Sarah.

ও তাকে এক মাস ধরে চিনতো। (হাসি)

He'd known her for a month.

আবার বলছি, ওরা ওদের সম্পর্কের ৪র্থ বার্ষিকী পালন করেছে,

Mind you, they'd had their fourth anniversary,

because it's a long time when you're 16.

He was really upset on the plane.

He said, "I'll never find another girl like Sarah."

And we were rather pleased about that, frankly --

because she was the main reason we were leaving the country.

(Laughter)

But something strikes you when you move to America

এবং যখন কেউ বিশ্বভ্রমনে বের হয়:

and travel around the world:

বিশ্বের সব শিক্ষাব্যবস্থাই বিভিন্ন বিষয়ে একই ক্রম মেনে চলে।

every education system on earth has the same hierarchy of subjects.

প্রত্যেকটায়। আপনি যেখানেই যান না কেন।

Every one. Doesn't matter where you go.

আপনি ভাববেন হয়তো অন্যরকম হতে পারে, কিন্তু তা নয়।

You'd think it would be otherwise, but it isn't.

সবচেয়ে উপরে আছে গনিত আর ভাষা,

At the top are mathematics and languages, then the humanities.

At the bottom are the arts. Everywhere on earth.

And in pretty much every system, too, there's a hierarchy within the arts.

Art and music are normally given a higher status in schools

than drama and dance.

There isn't an education system on the planet

that teaches dance every day to children

যেখানে প্রতিদিন নাচ শেখানো হয়

the way we teach them mathematics.

যেমন করে আমরা প্রতিদিন অংক করাই। কেন?

Why?

Why not?

কেন নেই? আমি মনে করি এটাই জরুরি।

I think this is rather important.

আমি মনে করি, অংক খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ, কিন্তু নৃত্যও তেমনি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

I think math is very important, but so is dance.

Children dance all the time if they're allowed to, we all do.

We all have bodies, don't we? Did I miss a meeting?

Truthfully, what happens is, as children grow up,

If you were to visit education as an alien

and say "What's it for, public education?"

I think you'd have to conclude, if you look at the output,

who really succeeds by this,

who does everything they should,

I think you'd have to conclude the whole purpose of public education

throughout the world

is to produce university professors.

They're the people who come out the top.

And I used to be one, so there.

brilliant, creative people think they're not,

because the thing they were good at at school

wasn't valued, or was actually stigmatized.

And I think we can't afford to go on that way.

Suddenly, degrees aren't worth anything.

Isn't that true?

We need to radically rethink our view of intelligence.

We know three things about intelligence.

আর যদি পৃথিবীর সব মানুষ ধ্বংস হয়ে যায়, তাহলে তার ৫০ বছরের মধ্যে

If all human beings disappeared from the Earth,

বাকি সকল প্রকারের জীব সমৃদ্ধি লাভ করবে।"

within 50 years, all forms of life would flourish."

আর সে ঠিকই বলেছে।

And he's right.

এখানে TED যা উদযাপন করছে তা হল, মানুষের কল্পনাশক্তির উপহার।

What TED celebrates is the gift of the human imagination.

আমাদের সচেতন হতে হবে যেন আমরা এই উপহারকে বিচক্ষনভাবে

We have to be careful now that we use this gift wisely,

কাজে লাগাই আর যেসব ঘটনা সম্পর্কে এখানে জানলাম সেগুলোকে

and that we avert some of the scenarios that we've talked about.

এড়াতে পারি। আর এটা করার একমাত্র উপায় হল

And the only way we'll do it is by seeing our creative capacities

নিজের সৃজনশীল ক্ষমতাকে এর প্রকৃত ঐশ্বর্য নিয়ে দেখা,

for the richness they are

আর সন্তানদের আমাদের আশা হিসেবে দেখা

and seeing our children for the hope that they are.

কারন ওরা সত্যিই তাই। এবং আমাদের কাজ হল তাদের সম্পূর্ণ সত্ত্বাকে

And our task is to educate their whole being,

শিক্ষিত করা, যাতে তারা ভবিষ্যতের মুখোমুখি হতে পারে।

so they can face this future.

By the way -- we may not see this future,

যাই হোক -- আমরা আমাদের সেই ভবিষ্যতকে দেখতে না পেলেও,

but they will.

ওরা পারবে। আমাদের কর্তব্য হল সেখান থেকে কিছু গঠন করতে

And our job is to help them make something of it.
