Now, I want to start with a question:

म एउटा प्रश्न सोधेर सुरु गर्न चाहन्छु:

When was the last time you were called "childish"?

बिगतमा कहिले तपाइंलाई कसैले "केटौले" भनेर भनेको थियो?

For kids like me,

म जस्ता बच्चाहरुको लागि,

being called childish can be a frequent occurrence.

"केटौले" त धेरै पटक भनि रहिने कुरा हो|

Every time we make irrational demands,

हामी जुनसुकै बेला, जस्तो कि हामि कुनै अविवेकी माग गरिराखेका हुन्छौं,

exhibit irresponsible behavior,

गैरजिम्वेवार व्यवहार प्रस्तुत गरि राखेका हुन्छौं,

or display any other signs of being normal American citizens,

अथवा त्यस्तै कुनै व्यवहार प्रस्तुत गर्छौ जुन

we are called childish.

Which really bothers me.

After all, take a look at these events:

Imperialism and colonization,

world wars, George W. Bush.

Ask yourself, who's responsible? Adults.

Now, what have kids done?

बच्चाहरुले चाहिँ के गरे त ?

Well, Anne Frank touched millions

एन्नी फ्र्यांक ले होलोकास्टको प्रख्यात डायरी लेखेर

with her powerful account of the Holocaust.

करोडौ को मन जितिन,

Ruby Bridges helped to end segregation in the United States.

रुबी बिर्जेस ले अमेरिकामा रहेको विभेदलाई चिर्न मद्दत गरिन,

And, most recently,

Charlie Simpson helped to raise 120,000 pounds for Haiti,

So as you can see evidenced by such examples,

that we should abolish this age-discriminatory word,

when it comes to criticizing behavior associated with irresponsibility

जुन गैर जिम्मेवारी र विवेकहिन चिन्तन को आलोचना

गर्ने बेला प्रयोग गर्ने गरिन्छ, हामीले त्यो हटाउनु पर्छ|

and irrational thinking.

Then again, who's to say that certain types of irrational thinking

अनि फेरी, कसले भन्छ कि

केहि त्यस्ता विवेकहिन चिन्तनहरु

aren't exactly what the world needs?

जुन संसारलाई चाहिदैन भनेर ?

Maybe you've had grand plans before,

सायद तपाइंले पनि निकै ठुलो योजना बुन्नु भएको थियो होला पहिले,

but stopped yourself, thinking,

अनि तपाईं ले त्यो योजनालाई रोक्नु भो, यो सोचेर कि,

"That's impossible," or "That costs too much,"

त्यो असम्भव छ, अथवा त्यसलाइ धेरै पैसा लाग्छ

or "That won't benefit me."

For better or worse, we kids aren't hampered as much

चाहे फाइदा होस् वा बेफाइदा, हामी बालकहरु त्यस्ता कुरा ले धेरै प्रभावित हुदैनौ,

when it comes to thinking about reasons why not to do things.

जतिबेला हामीले "किन नगर्ने" भन्ने कुराको कारण खोजि गरिरहेका हुन्छौ|

Kids can be full of inspiring aspirations and hopeful thinking,

बालकहरु उत्प्रेरणा

र आशावादी चिन्तनले भरिपूर्ण हुनसक्छन्,

like my wish that no one went hungry,

कोही पनि भोका नरहुन भन्ने मेरो सोच जस्तै

or that everything were free, a kind of utopia.

अथवा एउटा रामराज्य मा जस्तै होस् भन्ने मेरो सोच जस्तै|

How many of you still dream like that, and believe in the possibilities?

तपाईहरु मध्ये कतिले अझै पनि त्यस्तो सपना देख्नु हुन्छ

र त्यसको सम्भावना को बारेमा विश्वास गर्नु हुन्छ?

Sometimes a knowledge of history and the past failures of Utopian ideals

कुनै कुनै बेला इतिहासको ज्ञान

र पुराना रामराज्यको असफलताका कथाहरु

अनावश्यक भार हुनसक्छ

can be a burden,

because you know that if everything were free,

किनकि तपाईंलाई थाहा छ कि यदि सबै कुरा निशुल्क हुन्थ्यो भने,

then the food stocks would become depleted and scarce and lead to chaos.

खाध्य गोदामहरु खाली खाली हुने थिए,

अनि अभाव को सिर्जना भएर सबै भताभुङ्ग हुने थियो|

On the other hand, we kids still dream about perfection.

अनि अर्कोतिर,

हामी बालकहरु सपनाको पुर्णता को आशा गर्छौ|

And that's a good thing, because in order to make anything a reality,

र त्यो राम्रो कुरा पनि हो किनकि कुनै पनि चिजलाई

वास्तविक बनाउनको लागि.

you have to dream about it first.

तपाइंले पहिले त्यसको कल्पना गर्न जरुरी हुन्छ|

In many ways, our audacity to imagine

helps push the boundaries of possibility.

For instance, the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Washington,

they just think of good ideas.

Now, when you think of glass, you might think of colorful Chihuly designs,

or maybe Italian vases,

Now, our inherent wisdom doesn't have to be insider's knowledge.

हाम्रो आन्तरिक चेतना

आन्तरिक ज्ञान संग मिल्नु पर्छ भन्ने पनि केहि छैन|

Kids already do a lot of learning from adults,

बालकहरुले बयस्क बाट पहिले नै धेरै कुरा सिकी सकेका हुन्छन,

र हामी संग भन्ने कुरा धेरै छन्|

and we have a lot to share.

I think that adults should start learning from kids.

र मलाई लाग्छ कि बयस्कहलेरु बालकहरु बाट सिकाई को सुरुवात गर्नु पर्छ|

Now, I do most of my speaking

म मेरा धेरै भाषणहरु बौद्धिक जमात को आगाडि गर्ने गर्छु,

in front of an education crowd -- teachers and students,

शिक्षक र विद्यार्थीहरु को अगाडी, र मलाई यो समानता मन पर्छ|

and I like this analogy:

It shouldn't be a teacher at the head of the class,

कक्षाकोठाको नेता प्रमुख भनेको शिक्षक मात्रै हुनु हुदैन

विद्यार्थीलाई यसो गर उसो गर भन्ने|

telling students, "Do this, do that."

The students should teach their teachers.

विद्यार्थीले शिक्षकलाई पो पढाउनु पर्छ त |

हुर्केकाहरु र बालकहरु बिचमा सिकाइको सम्बन्ध

Learning between grown-ups and kids should be reciprocal.

भनेको पारस्परिक हुनु पर्छ|

The reality, unfortunately, is a little different,

तर वास्तविकता चाहिँ, दुर्भाग्यबस, अलि फरक छ,

and it has a lot to do with trust, or a lack of it.

र यो कुरा विश्वासमा अडेको कुरा हो,अथवा हुनसक्छ विश्वासको कमीमा |

Now, if you don't trust someone, you place restrictions on them, right?

यदि तपाईले कसैलाई विश्वास गर्नु हुन्न भन्ने, तपाइंले उसमाथि केहि प्रतिबन्ध लगाउनु हुन्छ, हगि?

If I doubt my older sister's ability to pay back the 10 percent interest

यदि मैले अघिल्लो पटक ऋण दिदा

I established on her last loan,

क्षमता माथि शंका गरेँ भने,

I'm going to withhold her ability to get more money from me,

until she pays it back.

जब सम्म उसले अघिल्लो ऋण तिर्दिन|(हाँसो)

(Laughter)

True story, by the way.

कुरा सत्य हो है , जे भए पनि|

Now, adults seem to have

त्यसैले बयस्कहरुमा एउटा यस्तो स्वभाव

a prevalently restrictive attitude towards kids,

बालकहरुलाई हेला गर्ने स्वभाब-- जरा गाडेर बसेको हुन्छ भन्ने लाग्दछ

from every "Don't do that, don't do this" in the school handbook,

स्कुलको किताबमा लेखिएको प्रत्येक "त्यो गर्नु हुदैन"

"यो गर्नु हुदैन",

to restrictions on school Internet use.

देखि स्कुलको इन्टरनेट को प्रयोगमा रोक |

As history points out, regimes become oppressive

इतिहासले यो भन्छ कि, सत्ताधारीले जब नियन्त्रण गर्न सकिन्न कि

when they're fearful about keeping control.

भन्ने ठान्दछ, तब दमनमा उत्रन्छ |

And although adults may not be quite at the level

यद्दपी बयस्कहरु मा सर्बसत्ताबादी

of totalitarian regimes,

सोच नै त नहोला, तरपनि

kids have no or very little say in making the rules,

बच्चाहरुलाइ नियम बनाउने सम्बधमा कत्तिपनि वा एकदमै थोरै बोल्ने अधिकार दिइएको हुन्छ,

when really, the attitude should be reciprocal,

जबकी यहाँ अभिमत वास्तवमै पारस्परिक हुनु पर्थ्यो,

meaning that the adult population should learn

भनाइको अर्थ वयस्कहरुले सानाहरुको

चाहनालाई बुझ्नु पर्ने र

and take into account the wishes of the younger population.

मनन गरिनु पर्थ्यो |

Now, what's even worse than restriction,

अनि, नियन्त्रण भन्दा दुखलाग्दो कुरा त यो हो कि

is that adults often underestimate kids' abilities.

वयस्कहरु प्राय जसो बच्चाहरुको खुबीलाइ कम आक्दछ्न|

We love challenges, but when expectations are low,

हामी चुनौतीहरु मन पराउछौ, तर जब त्यसको फलको आशा कम गरिन्छ,

विश्वास गर्नुस, हामी त्यसमै हराउदछौ|

trust me, we will sink to them.

My own parents had anything but low expectations

मेरो आफ्नै बुवाआमा संग पनि यस्तै कम आशावादिता थियो

for me and my sister.

म र मेरो बहिनीबाट|

Okay, so they didn't tell us to become doctors or lawyers or anything like that,

तेही भएर उनीहरुले हामीलाई कहिले पनि डाक्टर हुनु

वकिल हुनु अथवा त्यस्तै खालको केहि हुनु भनेर भन्नु भएन

but my dad did read to us about Aristotle and pioneer germ-fighters,

र पायोनिएर जर्म फाइटर्स (अग्रणी वैज्ञानिक बारेको पुस्तक) बारेमा सुनाउनु हुन्थ्यो

when lots of other kids were hearing

जबकी अरु धेरै बच्चाहरुले

"The Wheels on the Bus Go Round and Round."

"दी व्हील्स अन द बस गो राउण्ड एंड राउण्ड" (बालगीत) सुनिरहेका हुन्थे|

Well, we heard that one too, but "Pioneer Germ Fighters" totally rules.

जे होस्, हामीले त्यो पनि सुनेका थियौ,तर "पायोनिअर जर्म फाइटर" साच्चिकै दामी थियो|

I loved to write from the age of four, and when I was six,

मैले चार बर्सको उमेर देखि नै लेख्न मन पराउथे|

र जब म ६ बर्सकी भए

my mom bought me my own laptop equipped with Microsoft Word.

मेरी आमाले मलाई ल्यापटप किनिदिनु भयो जसमा माइक्रोसफ्ट वर्ड थियो|

I wrote over 300 short stories on that little laptop,

मैले ३०० भन्दा बढी संख्या मा लघुकथाहरु लेखे

त्यो सानो ल्यापटप मा,

and I wanted to get published.

र म त्यसलाई प्रकाशित गर्न चाहन्थे|

Instead of just scoffing at this heresy that a kid wanted to get published,

or saying wait until you're older,

my parents were really supportive.

Many publishers were not quite so encouraging.

धेरै प्रकाशकहरु चाही उति सार्हो उत्साहित थिएनन|

One large children's publisher ironically said

एउटा ठुलो बच्चाहरुको प्रकाशकले

that they didn't work with children.

हामी बच्चाहरु संग काम गर्दैनौ भन्ने जस्तो हास्यास्पद कुरा गरे|

Children's publisher not working with children?

बच्चाहरुको प्रकाशकले बच्चा संग काम नगर्ने ?

I don't know, you're kind of alienating a large client there.

लौ तेस्तो कुरा चै थाहा भएन, तर तपाईंले चाही यहाँ ठुलो संख्यामा ग्राहक गुमाई रहनु भएको छ |

(Laughter)

(हाँसो)

One publisher, Action Publishing, was willing to take that leap and trust me,

र, एउटा प्रकाशक, एक्सन पब्लिसिंगले,

and to listen to what I had to say.

They published my first book, "Flying Fingers," you see it here.

And from there on, it's gone to speaking at hundreds of schools,

keynoting to thousands of educators,

and finally, today, speaking to you.

I appreciate your attention today,

म तपाईं हरुको धैर्यताको सराहना गर्दछु,

because to show that you truly care, you listen.

तपाईंहरु बास्तबमै हाम्रो वास्ता गर्नु हुन्छ

भन्ने कुरा आज मेरो कुरा सुनेर देखाउनु भएको छ|

But there's a problem with this rosy picture

तर बच्चा हरु वयस्क हरु भन्दा धेरै राम्रो भएको

of kids being so much better than adults.

यो आशावादी तश्विरमा एउटा समस्या चाही छ|

Kids grow up and become adults just like you.

बच्चा हरु हुर्कन्छन र केवल तपाईंहरु जस्तै वयस्क बन्दछन|

(Laughter)

(हाँसो)

Or just like you? Really?

केवल तपाईं जस्तै, हो र भन्या?

The goal is not to turn kids into your kind of adult,

यहाँ उदेश्य चाही बच्चाहरुलाई तपाईहरु जस्तो वयस्क बनाउनु भन्ने चाही होइन,

तर तपाईं हरु भन्दा असल वयस्क बनाउनु भन्ने हो

but rather, better adults than you have been,

which may be a little challenging, considering your guys' credentials.

जुन अलिकति चुनौतिपुर्ण नै हुन सक्छ

तपाईंहरुको क्षमतालाई मध्यनजर राख्दा,

(Laughter)

But the way progress happens,

तर प्रगति कसरि हुदै जान्छ भने

is because new generations and new eras

नया पुस्ताहरु र नया समय हरु

grow and develop and become better than the previous ones.

पुराना भन्दा बृहत्तर र विकसित र एकदमै राम्रो हुदै जान्छ|

It's the reason we're not in the Dark Ages anymore.

यहि कारण ले त हामी अहिले ढुंगे युग मा छैनौ नि त|

No matter your position or place in life,

तपाईं जिवनको जस्तोसुकै मोडमा हुनु भएको भए पनि,

it is imperative to create opportunities for children,

बच्चाहरु को लागि अवसरको सिर्जना गर्नु अत्यावश्यक छ

so that we can grow up to blow you away.

ताकी हामी यसरी हुर्कन सकौकि तपाईंहरुलाइ कसिंगर सरि उडाइदिन सकौ|

(Laughter)

(हाँसो)

Adults and fellow TEDsters,

वयस्क तथा टेड का मेरा समकालीनहरु,

you need to listen and learn from kids,

तपाईहरुले बच्चाको कुरा सुन्नु अनि सिक्नु सक्नु पर्छ

and trust us and expect more from us.

र हामीलाई विश्वास गर्नुस अनि हामी बाट धेरै आशा गर्नुस

You must lend an ear today,

तपाईं ले आज यो सुन्ने धैर्यता राख्नु पर्छ,

because we are the leaders of tomorrow, which means

किनकि हामी नै भोलिका नेता हरु हौ,

त्यसको अर्थ यो हुन्छ कि भोलि तपाईंहरु बृद्ध र असक्त हुदा

we're going to take care of you when you're old and senile.

तपाईहरुको रेखदेख गर्ने हामी नै हौ | होइन , ठट्टा गर्या के |

No, just kidding.

(Laughter)

वास्तवमै, हामीहरु नै भोलिका नया पिढी हौ

No, really, we are going to be the next generation,

र जसले भोलिको विश्वलाई आगाडि हाक्नेछ|

the ones who will bring this world forward.

And in case you don't think that this really has meaning for you,

र, यदि तपाईंलाई यो लाग्छ कि यी कुराले कुनै अर्थ दिदैन,

remember that cloning is possible,

भने भोलि बिखण्डन को स्थिति पनि आउन सक्छ,

and that involves going through childhood again,

र त्यसमा फेरी बच्चा हुनु पर्ने अवस्था पनि आउन सक्छ,

in which case you'll want to be heard, just like my generation.

अनि त्यस बखत तपाईं पनि हाम्रो पुस्ताले

जस्तै आफ्ना कुरा सुनियोस भन्ने चाहनुहुन्छ|

Now, the world needs opportunities for new leaders and new ideas.

त्यसैले, आजको विश्वलाई भोलिको नया नेता र

नया विचारहरुको लागि अवसरको आवश्यकता छ|

Kids need opportunities to lead and succeed.

बालबालिकाहरुलाई नेतृत्व गर्न र सफल हुन अवसरको आवश्यकता छ|

Are you ready to make the match?

के तपाईं सहयोगको लागि तत्पर हुनुहुन्छ त?

Because the world's problems shouldn't be the human family's heirloom.

किनकि विश्वका समस्याहरु

मानिसको पारिवारिक विरासत हुनु हुदैन|
