Hi. I'm here to talk to you about the importance of

سڵاو. من لێرەم بۆ ئەوەی دەربارەی گرنگی...

praise, admiration and thank you,

سوپاس و ستایشکردن قسەبکەم،

and having it be specific and genuine.

کە بوونی ئەوانە شتێکی تایبەت و ڕەسەنە.

And the way I got interested in this was,

ئەو شێوازەی کە من پێم خۆش بوو ئەوە بوو،

I noticed in myself, when I was growing up,

لە خۆمدا تێبینیم کرد، کاتێک گەورە بووم،

and until about a few years ago,

تاکو چەند ساڵێک پێش ئێستا،

that I would want to say thank you to someone,

کە دەمەویست سوپاسی کەسێک بکەم،

I would want to praise them,

ستایشیانم دەکرد و

I would want to take in their praise of me

دەمویست ستایشی منیش بکەن،

and I'd just stop it.

هەروەها ت دەوەستام.

And I asked myself, why?

لە خۆمم پرسی، بۆچی؟

I felt shy, I felt embarrassed.

هەستم بە شەرم و شەرمەزاری دەکرد.

And then my question became,

دواتر پرسیارەکەم بوو بە،

am I the only one who does this?

من تاکە کەسم کە ئەمە دەکەم؟

So, I decided to investigate.

دواتر، ئئبڕیارم دا لێکۆڵینەوە بکەم.

I'm fortunate enough to work in the rehab facility,

زۆر خۆشبەختم بە کارکردن لەو شوێنە،

so I get to see people who are facing life and death with addiction.

بۆیە دەتوانم ئەو کەسانە ببینم، کە بە ئالوودەبوون ڕووبەڕووی ژیان و مردن دەبنەوە.

And sometimes it comes down to something as simple as,

هەندێک جار بە سادەیی،

their core wound is their father died without ever saying he's proud of them.

وەک برینی باوکیان، کە مردوو بەبێ ئەوەی هیچ کات بڵێت شانازییان پێوە دەکات.

But then, they hear from all the family and friends

دواتر لە هەموو هاوڕێکانی و خێزانەکەی دەبیستن،

that the father told everybody else that he was proud of him,

کە باوکەکە بە هەموو کەسێکی گووتبوو، کە شانازی پێوە دەکات،

but he never told the son.

بەڵام هەرگیز بە کوڕەکەی نەگووتبوو.

It's because he didn't know that his son needed to hear it.

چونکە نەیدەزانی، کە کوڕەکەی پێویستی بە بیستنی ئەوە هەیە.

So my question is, why don't we ask for the things that we need?

بۆیە پرسیارەکەم ئەوەیە، بۆچی ئێمە داوای ئەو شتانە ناکەین کە پێویستمانە؟

I know a gentleman, married for 25 years,

ئ بەڕێزێک دەناسم، ماوەی ٢٥ ساڵە هاوسەرگیری کردووە،

who's longing to hear his wife say,

کە دەیەوێت گوێ لە ژنەکەی بێت کە دەڵێت،

"Thank you for being the breadwinner, so I can stay home with the kids,"

“سوپاس بۆ ئەوەی کە نانت پێداین،ئەتوانم لە ماڵەوە لەگەڵ

but won't ask.

منداڵەکان بمێنمەوە”. بەڵام ناپرسێت.

I know a woman who's good at this.

ژنێک دەناسم کە لەمەدا باشە.

She, once a week, meets with her husband and says,

هەفتەی جارێک لەگەڵ هاوسەرەکەی کۆدەبێتەوە و دەڵێت،

"I'd really like you to thank me for all these things I did in the house and with the kids."

“بەڕاستی زۆر حەز دەکەم سوپاسی من بکەیت بۆ هەموو ئەو شتانەی لە ماڵ و لەگەڵ

And he goes, "Oh, this is great, this is great."

منداڵەکاندا ئەنجاممدا. ژنەکەش گووتی” زۆر باشە، زۆر باشە”.

And praise really does have to be genuine,

ستایشکردن بەڕاستی دەبێت بەم شێوە ڕەسەنە بێت،

but she takes responsibility for that.

بەڵام ئەو بەرپرسیارێتی دەگرێتە ئەستۆ.

And a friend of mine, April, who I've had since kindergarten,

هاوڕێیەکی خۆم، نیسان، کە لە باخچەی ساوایانەوە ناسیبووم،

she thanks her children for doing their chores.

سوپاسی منداڵەکانی دەکات بۆ ئەنجامدانی کاری خۆیان.

وتی: “بۆچی سوپاسیان نەکەم، هەرچەندە بڕیار وایە خۆیان ئەو کارە بکەن؟”

And she said, "Why wouldn't I thank it, even though they're supposed to do it?"

So, the question is, why was I blocking it?

پرسیارەکە ئەوەیە، بۆچی ڕێگریم لێ دەکرد؟

Why were other people blocking it?

بۆچی خەڵکی تر ڕێگریان لێ دەکرد؟

Why can I say, "I'll take my steak medium rare,

بۆچی دەتوانم ئەوە بڵێم ،

I need size six shoes," but I won't say,

پێویستم بە پێڵاوی ژمارە شەشە، بەڵام نایڵێم.

"Would you praise me this way?"

“ئایا بەم شێوەیە ستایشم دەکەیت؟”

And it's because I'm giving you critical data about me.

لەبەر ئەوەیە کە من زانیاری ڕەخنەگرانەت پێ دەدەم دەربارەی خۆم.

I'm telling you where I'm insecure.

پێت دەڵێم لە کوێ ئاسوودەنیم.

I'm telling you where I need your help.

پێت دەڵێم لە کوێ پێویستم بە یارمەتی تۆیە.

And I'm treating you, my inner circle,

هەروەها مامەڵە گش لەگەڵ تۆ دەکەم.

like you're the enemy.

وەک ئەوەی تۆ دوژمن بیت.

Because what can you do with that data?

چونکە دەتوانی چی لەم زانیاریانە؟

You could neglect me.

دەتوانی فەرامۆشم بکەیت.

You could abuse it.

دەتوانی ئازاری بدەیت.

Or you could actually meet my need.

یان دەتوانی پێویستییەکانم بزانیت.

And I took my bike into the bike store-- I love this --

پاسکیلەکەم برده‌ دوکانی پاسکیل، ئەمەم خۆش دەوێت.

same bike, and they'd do something called "truing" the wheels.

هەمان پایسکیل، شتێک دەکەن پێی دەوترێت “ راستکردنەوە”ی سوکان.

The guy said, "You know, when you true the wheels,

گەنجه‌كه‌ وتی: “دەزانیت، کاتێک چەرخەکان

it's going to make the bike so much better."

ڕاست دەکەیتەوە، پاسکیلەکە زۆر باشتر دەکات.

I get the same bike back,

هەمان پاسکیلم بۆ هاتەوە.

and they've taken all the little warps out of those same wheels

هەموو کەرستە بچووکەکانیان لە هەمان سوکان دەرهێنا.

I've had for two and a half years, and my bike is like new.

ماوەی دوو ساڵ و نیوە ئەو پایسکیلەکەم هەیە و ئێستاش نوێ یە.

So, I'm going to challenge all of you.

بەرەنگاری هەمووتان دەبمەوە.

I want you to true your wheels:

دەمەوێت چەرخەکانتان ڕاست بکەنەوە:

be honest about the praise that you need to hear.

ڕاستگۆ بن سەبارەت بەو وەسف و ستایشکردنەی کە پێویستە بیبیستن.

What do you need to hear? Go home to your wife --

پێویستت بە بیستنی چیە؟ بڕۆ ماڵەوە بۆ لای هاوسەرەکەت.

go ask her, what does she need?

بڕۆ لێی بپرسە، چی پێویستە؟

Go home to your husband -- what does he need?

بڕۆ ماڵەوە بۆ لای مێردەکەت، پێویستی بە چیە؟

Go home and ask those questions, and then help the people around you.

بڕۆ ماڵەوە و ئەو پرسیارانە بکە، یارمەتی خەڵکی دەوروبەری خۆت بدە.

And it's simple.

سادەو ئاسانە.

And why should we care about this?

بۆچی دەبێت ئێمە گرنگی بەم بابەتە بدەین؟

We talk about world peace.

باس لە جیهانی ئاشتی دەکەین.

How can we have world peace with different cultures, different languages?

چۆن دەتوانین جیهانی ئاشتیمان هەبێت لەگەڵ کەلتووری جیاواز و زمانە جیاوازەکان؟

I think it starts household by household, under the same roof.

پێم وایە، ماڵ بە ماڵ دەست پێدەکات، لەژێر هەمان سەقف.

So, let's make it right in our own backyard.

با لە پشتەوەی خۆمان درووستی بکەین.

And I want to thank all of you in the audience

دەمەوێت سوپاسی هەموو ئامادەبووان بکەم،

for being great husbands, great mothers,

بۆ بوون بە هاوسەر و هاوژینی مەزن،

friends, daughters, sons.

هەروەها هاوڕێ و کچ و کوڕەکانیش.

لەوانەیە هەرگیز کەسێک ئەوەی بە تۆ نەگووتبێت،

And maybe somebody's never said that to you,

but you've done a really, really good job.

بەڵام تۆ کارێکی زۆر باشت ئەنجامداوە.

And thank you for being here, just showing up

سوپاسی هاتنتان دەکەم بۆ ئێرە و

and changing the world with your ideas.

بۆ گۆڕینی جیهان بە بیرۆکەکانتان.
