Hi. I'm here to talk to you about the importance of

praise, admiration and thank you,

and having it be specific and genuine.

And the way I got interested in this was,

I noticed in myself, when I was growing up,

and until about a few years ago,

that I would want to say thank you to someone,

I would want to praise them,

I would want to take in their praise of me

and I'd just stop it.

dar mă blocam.

And I asked myself, why?

Mă tot întrebam, de ce?

I felt shy, I felt embarrassed.

Mă simțeam timidă, jenată.

And then my question became,

Mi-am pus întrebarea dacă doar eu procedez aşa?

am I the only one who does this?

Şi am vrut să aflu.

So, I decided to investigate.

I'm fortunate enough to work in the rehab facility,

Am noroc că lucrez într-un centru de reabilitare

so I get to see people who are facing life and death with addiction.

şi văd oameni înfruntând viaţa şi moartea, dependenţi de vicii.

And sometimes it comes down to something as simple as,

Uneori răspunsul e simplu, durerea lor fiind că tatăl a decedat

their core wound is their father died without ever saying he's proud of them.

fără să le fi spus vreodată că e mândru de ei.

But then, they hear from all the family and friends

Aude apoi de la familie și prieteni că tatăl spunea tuturor că e mândru de el,

that the father told everybody else that he was proud of him,

dar lui, niciodată.

but he never told the son.

It's because he didn't know that his son needed to hear it.

Nu știa că fiul avea nevoie să audă asta.

So my question is, why don't we ask for the things that we need?

De ce nu cerem să primim ce avem nevoie?

I know a gentleman, married for 25 years,

Ştiu un bărbat căsătorit 25 de ani, dornic să-şi audă soţia spunând:

who's longing to hear his wife say,

"Thank you for being the breadwinner, so I can stay home with the kids,"

„Mulțumesc că munceşti ca eu să pot sta cu copiii acasă”,

but won't ask.

dar nu cere să-i spună.

I know a woman who's good at this.

Ştiu o femeie care face asta.

She, once a week, meets with her husband and says,

O dată pe săptămână îi spune soţului:

"I'd really like you to thank me for all these things I did in the house and with the kids."

„Vreau să-mi mulțumești pentru tot ce fac prin casă și cu copiii.”

And he goes, "Oh, this is great, this is great."

Și el: „O, e grozav! Şi asta e minunat!”

And praise really does have to be genuine,

Lauda trebuie să fie sinceră, dar ea își asumă răspunderea pentru asta.

but she takes responsibility for that.

And a friend of mine, April, who I've had since kindergarten,

April, o prienă încă de la grădiniță,

she thanks her children for doing their chores.

le mulțumește copiilor ei că-şi fac treaba.

„De ce n-aș mulțumi, deşi ei trebuie să le facă?”

And she said, "Why wouldn't I thank it, even though they're supposed to do it?"

So, the question is, why was I blocking it?

Întrebarea e: de ce eu stăvileam impulsul? De ce şi alții și-l stăvilesc?

Why were other people blocking it?

Why can I say, "I'll take my steak medium rare,

De ce pot să cer un grătar mediu sau pantofi mărimea 6,

I need size six shoes," but I won't say,

dar n-o să cer: „Laudă-mă aşa, te rog.” ?

"Would you praise me this way?"

And it's because I'm giving you critical data about me.

E pentru că dezvălui informaţii importante despre mine.

Vă comunic când mă simt nesigură. Arăt că am nevoie de ajutorul vostru.

I'm telling you where I'm insecure.

I'm telling you where I need your help.

And I'm treating you, my inner circle,

Dar vă tratez pe voi, apropiații mei, de parcă mi-ați fi dușmani.

like you're the enemy.

Because what can you do with that data?

Ce-ați face cu informația?

You could neglect me.

Ați putea să mă neglijați, aţi putea să vă folosiţi de ea,

You could abuse it.

Or you could actually meet my need.

sau ați putea să-mi satisfaceți nevoia.

And I took my bike into the bike store-- I love this --

Mi-am dus bicicleta la service – ador asta – aceiași bicicletă:

same bike, and they'd do something called "truing" the wheels.

i-au făcut „îndreptarea” roților.

The guy said, "You know, when you true the wheels,

„Îndreptatul roților face bicicleta mult mai bună”, îmi zice.

it's going to make the bike so much better."

I get the same bike back,

Primesc aceeași bicicletă înapoi.

and they've taken all the little warps out of those same wheels

Au scos toate onduleurile

de pe aceleaşi roţi pe care le am de 2 ani jumate

I've had for two and a half years, and my bike is like new.

și bicicleta e ca nouă.

So, I'm going to challenge all of you.

Vă provoc pe toţi să vă îndreptaţi roţile:

I want you to true your wheels:

be honest about the praise that you need to hear.

recunoaşte-ţi ce laude aveţi nevoie să auziţi.

What do you need to hear? Go home to your wife --

Mergeți acasă la soție și întrebați-o de ce are nevoie?

go ask her, what does she need?

Go home to your husband -- what does he need?

Mergeți acasă la soț: de ce are nevoie?

Go home and ask those questions, and then help the people around you.

Mergeți acasă, puneţi întrebările astea, apoi ajutați-i pe cei din jur.

And it's simple.

E simplu. De ce ne-ar păsa de asta?

And why should we care about this?

Vorbim despre pace.

We talk about world peace.

How can we have world peace with different cultures, different languages?

Cum putem avea pace într-o lume cu diferite culturi şi limbi?

I think it starts household by household, under the same roof.

Cred că începe din casă-n casă, sub același acoperiș.

So, let's make it right in our own backyard.

Haideţi să începem cu ograda noastră.

And I want to thank all of you in the audience

Vreau să vă mulțumesc tuturor din audiență

for being great husbands, great mothers,

că sunteți soți excelenți, mame excelente, prieteni, fiice şi fii excelenți.

friends, daughters, sons.

And maybe somebody's never said that to you,

but you've done a really, really good job.

And thank you for being here, just showing up

and changing the world with your ideas.
