Hi. I'm here to talk to you about the importance of

سڵاو. من لێرەم بۆ قسە کردن دەربارەی گرینگییەکانی

praise, admiration and thank you,

پیاهەڵدان، ڕێز و سوپاس

and having it be specific and genuine.

و هەبوونیان بە دیاریکراوی و ڕاستەقینە بێت.

And the way I got interested in this was,

ئەوەی سەرنجی ڕاکێشام لەمە ئەوە بوو،

I noticed in myself, when I was growing up,

من لە خۆمدا تێبینیم کرد کاتێک کە گەورە دەبووم،

and until about a few years ago,

تا چەند ساڵێکی پێشوو،

that I would want to say thank you to someone,

کە دەمویست سوپاسی کەسێک بکەم،

I would want to praise them,

دەمویست پیایان هەڵبدەم

I would want to take in their praise of me

من دەمویست لە پیاهەڵدانەکانیان بم

and I'd just stop it.

و من ئەمەم وەستاند.

And I asked myself, why?

و من لە خۆم پرسی، بۆ؟

I felt shy, I felt embarrassed.

هەستم بە شەرم کرد، هەستم بە شەرمەزاری کرد.

And then my question became,

و پرسیارەکەی من ئەمە بوو،

am I the only one who does this?

ئایا من تاکە کەسم ئەمە دەکەم؟

So, I decided to investigate.

بۆیە بڕیارمدا بگەڕێـم.

I'm fortunate enough to work in the rehab facility,

من زۆر بە بەختم کە کار لەگەڵ ڕێکخراوە مرۆییەکان دەکەم،

so I get to see people who are facing life and death with addiction.

بۆیە بوارم هەبوو خەڵکی وا ببینم کە ڕووبەڕووی ژیان و مردن دەبنەوە

And sometimes it comes down to something as simple as,

بە ئالوودە بوون. و هەندێك جاریش دەبێتە شتێکی سادەی وەک،

their core wound is their father died without ever saying he's proud of them.

کە برینی قوڵیان ئەوەیە کە باوکیان مرد و بۆ جارێکیش نەیگوت شانازیت پێوە دەکەم.

But then, they hear from all the family and friends

بەڵام دواتر، لە هەموو خێزان وهاوڕییانیان

that the father told everybody else that he was proud of him,

گوێ بیست دەبوون کە باوکی بە هەمووانی گوتووە کە شانازییان پێوە

but he never told the son.

دەکات، بەڵام هەرگیز

It's because he didn't know that his son needed to hear it.

بە کوڕەکەی نەگوتووە. لەبەرئەوەی نەیدەزانی کە کوڕەکەی پێویستە

So my question is, why don't we ask for the things that we need?

گوێی لەمە بێت. پرسیارەکەم ئەوەیە، بۆ ئێمە داوای ئەو شتانە ناکەین کە پێویستمانە؟

I know a gentleman, married for 25 years,

پیاوێک دەناسم، ٢٥ ساڵە هاوسەرگیری کردووە،

who's longing to hear his wife say,

کە تامەزرۆی ئەوە بوو خێزانەکەی بڵێت، سوپاس

"Thank you for being the breadwinner, so I can stay home with the kids,"

کە نان بۆ خێزانەکە پەیدا دەکەیت، و دەتوانم لەگەڵ منداڵەکان بم،"

but won't ask.

بەڵام وای نەدەگوت.

I know a woman who's good at this.

ئافرەتێکیش دەناسم کە زۆر لەمەدا باشە.

She, once a week, meets with her husband and says,

هەفتەی جارێک هاوسەرەکەی دەبینی و دەیگوت،

"I'd really like you to thank me for all these things I did in the house and with the kids."

"من زۆرم پێ خۆشە سوپاسم بکەیت بۆ ئەو شتانەی لە ماڵەکەدا دەیکەم لەگەڵ منداڵەکان

And he goes, "Oh, this is great, this is great."

و ئەو گووتی،"ئۆو، ئەمە نایابە، ئەمە نایابە."

And praise really does have to be genuine,

و پیاهەڵدانیش پێویستە ڕاستەقینە بێت،

but she takes responsibility for that.

بەڵام ئەو بەرپرسیارییەتی ئەمە دەگرێتە ئەستۆ

And a friend of mine, April, who I've had since kindergarten,

و هاوڕێیەکم، ئەپریل، کە لە باخچەی ساوایانەوە هاوڕێمە، کە سوپاسی

she thanks her children for doing their chores.

منداڵەکانی دەکات بۆ ئەرکە لاوەکییەکانیان. و ئەو گووتی، "بۆ نابێت

And she said, "Why wouldn't I thank it, even though they're supposed to do it?"

سوپاسیان بکەم، هەتا ئەمە ئەرکی خۆشیان بێت؟"

So, the question is, why was I blocking it?

بۆیە، پرسیار ئەمەیە، بۆ من نایکەم؟

Why were other people blocking it?

بۆ ئەوانیتر نایکەن؟

Why can I say, "I'll take my steak medium rare,

بۆ دەتوانم بڵێم، من گۆشتی نیمچە برژاوم دەوێت،

I need size six shoes," but I won't say,

من پێویستم بە پێڵاوی ژمارە شەشە، "بەڵام ناڵێم،

"Would you praise me this way?"

"ئایا دەتوانیت بەم شێوەیە پێمدا هەڵبدەیت؟"

And it's because I'm giving you critical data about me.

و لەبەر ئەوەی من زانیاری ڕەخنەگرتنت پێ دەدەم دەربارەی خۆم.

I'm telling you where I'm insecure.

من خاڵی هەستیاری خۆمت پێ دەڵێم.

I'm telling you where I need your help.

من پێت دەڵێم لە کوێ پێویستم بە یارمەتیتە.

And I'm treating you, my inner circle,

و من لە ناخەوە مامەڵەت لەگەڵ دەکەم،

like you're the enemy.

وەک ئەوەی تۆ دوژمنەکە بیت.

Because what can you do with that data?

چونکە دەتوانیت چی بکەیت بەم زانیارییانە؟

You could neglect me.

دەتوانیت پاشگەزم بکەیتەوە. دەتوانیت من بە

You could abuse it.

خراپ بەکاربهێنیت.

Or you could actually meet my need.

یان دەتوانیت لە ئاست پێویستییەکانی من بیت.

And I took my bike into the bike store-- I love this --

و من پاسکیلەکەم دەبەم بۆ کۆگای پاسکیل

same bike, and they'd do something called "truing" the wheels.

-حەزم لەمەیە- هەمان پاسکیل، و ئەوان ویلەکەی ڕاست دەکەنەوە.

The guy said, "You know, when you true the wheels,

گەنجەکە گووتی،"دەزانیت، کاتێک ویلەکان ڕاست

it's going to make the bike so much better."

دەکەینەوە، پاسکیلەکە

I get the same bike back,

زۆر باشتر دەکات." هەمان پاسکیلم هەیە،

and they've taken all the little warps out of those same wheels

و ئەوان هەموو وردە خوارییەکانی هەمان ویل چاکدەکەنەوە

I've had for two and a half years, and my bike is like new.

ئەمە دوو ساڵ و نیو دەبێت و پاسکیلەکەم هەر نوێیە.

So, I'm going to challenge all of you.

بۆیە، من پێشبڕکێی هەمووتان دەکەم.

I want you to true your wheels:

دەمەوێت هەمووتان ویلەکانتان ڕاست بکەنەوە:

be honest about the praise that you need to hear.

ڕاشکاو بە دەربارەی ئەو پیاهەڵدانەی کە دەتەوێت گوێت لێبێت.

What do you need to hear? Go home to your wife --

پێویستت بە چییە گوێت لێبێت؟ بڕۆ لای خێزانت-

go ask her, what does she need?

بڕۆ و پرسیاری لێبکە، چی پێویستە؟

Go home to your husband -- what does he need?

بڕۆ بۆ لای هاوسەرەکەت-- چی پێویستە؟

Go home and ask those questions, and then help the people around you.

بڕۆ ماڵەوە و ئەو پرسیارانە بکە، و یارمەتی ئەوانی دەوروبەرت بدە.

And it's simple.

و ئەمە ئاسانە.

And why should we care about this?

و بۆچی پێویستە ئێمە گرینگی بەمە بدەین؟

We talk about world peace.

لەبارەی ئاشتی جیهان

How can we have world peace with different cultures, different languages?

چۆن ئاشتی جیهانیمان دەبێت بە کەلتوری جیا و بە زمانی جیا؟

I think it starts household by household, under the same roof.

پێموایە ئەمە ماڵ بە ماڵ، لە ژێر هەمان بنمیچ دەست پێ دەکات.

So, let's make it right in our own backyard.

کەوایە، با هەر ڕێک لە باخچەکەمان بیکەین.

And I want to thank all of you in the audience

و من دەمەوێت سوپاسی هەموو ئامادەبووان بکەم

for being great husbands, great mothers,

کە بوونەتە باشترین دایک، باوک،

friends, daughters, sons.

هاوڕێ، کچ، کوڕ. و لەوانەیە هەرگیز کەسێک

And maybe somebody's never said that to you,

وای پێ نەگووتبن،

but you've done a really, really good job.

بەڵام تۆ کارێکی زۆر زۆر باشت کرد.

And thank you for being here, just showing up

و سوپاس کە لیرەیت، کە خۆت پیشان دا

and changing the world with your ideas.

و جیهان بگۆڕیت بە بیرۆکەکانت.
