In 2012, when I painted the minaret of Jara Mosque

En 2012, quand j'ai peint le minaret de la mosquée Jara

à Gabès, ma ville natale dans le sud de la Tunisie,

in my hometown of Gabés, in the south of Tunisia,

I never thought that graffiti would bring so much attention to a city.

je ne pensais pas qu'un graffiti jetterait autant d'attention sur la ville.

At the beginning, I was just looking for a wall in my hometown,

Au début, je cherchais un mur dans ma ville,

and it happened that the minaret was built in '94.

et le minaret a été construit en 1994.

And for 18 years, those 57 meters of concrete stayed grey.

Pendant 18 ans, ces 57 mètres de béton restaient gris.

When I met the imam for the first time, and I told him what I wanted to do,

Quand j'ai rencontré l'imam et lui ai parlé de mon idée,

he was like, "Thank God you finally came,"

il a dit : « Dieu merci, vous êtes venu. »

and he told me that for years he was waiting for somebody

Que depuis des années, il attendait que quelqu'un dessine sur le mur.

to do something on it.

The most amazing thing about this imam is that he didn't ask me anything --

Le plus incroyable, c'est qu'il n'avait aucune préférence.

neither a sketch, or what I was going to write.

Aucun dessin précis, ni message particulier.

In every work that I create, I write messages

Dans toutes mes œuvres, j'écris des messages

with my style of calligraffiti -- a mix of calligraphy and graffiti.

avec mon style de « calligraphitti », mélange de calligraphie et de graffitis.

I use quotes or poetry.

J'utilise des citations ou des poèmes.

For the minaret, I thought that the most relevant message

Pour le minaret, le message le plus pertinent serait un message du Coran.

to be put on a mosque should come from the Quran,

so I picked this verse:

J'ai choisi ces vers :

"Oh humankind, we have created you from a male and a female,

« Ô humanité! Nous t’avons créée d'un mâle et d'une femelle, et nous avons

and made you people and tribe, so you may know each other."

tiré de toi des nations pour que vous vous connaissiez. »

It was a universal call for peace, tolerance, and acceptance

C'est un appel à la paix, la tolérance et l'acceptation

coming from the side that we don't usually portray in a good way in the media.

provenant d'un côté souvent mal dépeint dans les médias.

I was amazed to see how the local community reacted to the painting,

C'était bon de voir à quel point la communauté a réagi au graffiti

and how it made them proud to see the minaret getting so much attention

et à quel point ils étaient fiers que le minaret attire autant d'attention

from international press all around the world.

For the imam, it was not just the painting;

it was really deeper than that.

He hoped that this minaret would become a monument for the city,

and attract people to this forgotten place of Tunisia.

et attire des gens dans ce coin oublié de la Tunisie.

The universality of the message,

L'universalité du message,

the political context of Tunisia at this time,

le contexte politique de la Tunisie,

and the fact that I was writing Quran in a graffiti way

were not insignificant.

It reunited the community.

Bringing people, future generations,

together through Arabic calligraphy

is what I do.

Writing messages is the essence of my artwork.

L'écriture de messages est la base de mon travail.

What is funny, actually, is that even Arabic-speaking people

Le plus drôle, c'est que même les arabophones doivent

really need to focus a lot to decipher what I'm writing.

You don't need to know the meaning to feel the piece.

On peut ressentir l’œuvre sans sa signification.

I think that Arabic script touches your soul before it reaches your eyes.

Je pense que l'écriture arabe touche l'âme avant les yeux.

There is a beauty in it that you don't need to translate.

Elle a une beauté qu'il est inutile de traduire.

Arabic script speaks to anyone, I believe;

L'écriture arabe parle à tout le monde.

to you, to you, to you, to anybody,

À vous, vous, et vous. Tout le monde.

and then when you get the meaning,

Et si on comprend la signification, on se sent connecté.

you feel connected to it.

I always make sure to write messages

Je m'assure d'écrire des messages pertinents pour l'endroit où je peint.

that are relevant to the place where I'm painting,

but messages that have a universal dimension,

Ces messages restent universels, donc toute la planète peut en profiter.

so anybody around the world can connect to it.

I was born and raised in France, in Paris,

Je suis né en France, à Paris,

and I started learning how to write and read Arabic when I was 18.

et j'ai appris à lire et écrire en arabe à 18 ans.

Today I only write messages in Arabic.

Aujourd'hui, je n'écris que des messages en arabe.

One of the reasons this is so important to me,

C'est très important pour moi,

notamment pour toutes les réactions que j'ai causées autour du globe.

is because of all the reaction that I've experienced all around the world.

In Rio de Janeiro, I translated this Portuguese poem

À Rio de Janeiro, j'ai traduit un poème portugais de Gabriela Torres Barbosa

from Gabriela Tôrres Barbosa,

who was giving an homage to the poor people of the favela,

qui rendait hommage aux pauvres des favelas, et je l'ai peint sur un toit.

and then I painted it on the rooftop.

The local community were really intrigued by what I was doing,

La communauté était intriguée par ce que je faisais.

but as soon as I gave them the meaning of the calligraphy,

Dès que j'ai révélé le sens du texte,

they thanked me, as they felt connected to the piece.

ils m'ont remercié, puisqu'ils se sentaient connectés à l’œuvre.

In South Africa, in Cape Town,

En Afrique du Sud, au Cap,

the local community of Philippi

la communauté de Philippi

offered me the only concrete wall of the slum.

m'a offert l'unique mur de ciment du bidonville.

It was a school, and I wrote on it

Un mur d'école, où j'ai écrit une citation de Nelson Mandela disant :

a quote from Nelson Mandela,

saying, "[in Arabic],"

(en arabe)

which means, "It seems impossible until it's done."

« Ça semble impossible jusqu'à ce que ça se réalise. »

Then this guy came to me and said, "Man, why you don't write in English?"

Quelqu'un m'a demandé :

« Pourquoi pas en anglais? »

and I replied to him, "I would consider your concern legit if you asked me

et j'ai répondu :

« Ta question devrait plutôt être: pourquoi je n'écris pas en zulu. »

why I didn't write in Zulu."

In Paris, once, there was this event,

À Paris, il y a eu un évènement et quelqu'un m'a confié son mur à peindre.

and someone gave his wall to be painted.

And when he saw I was painting in Arabic,

Quand il a vu que j'écrivais en arabe,

he got so mad -- actually, hysterical -- and he asked for the wall to be erased.

ça l'a rendu fou de rage, et il a demandé qu'on efface.

I was mad and disappointed.

J'étais déçu.

But a week later, the organizer of the event asked me to come back,

Une semaine plus tard, l'organisateur m'a demandé de revenir.

and he told me that there was a wall right in front of this guy's house.

Il m'a dit qu'il y avait un mur devant la maison de cet homme.

So, this guy --

Donc, cet homme verrait le graffiti tous les jours.

(Laughter)

like, was forced to see it every day.

At the beginning, I was going to write, "[In Arabic],"

Au début, je comptais écrire :

(en arabe)

which means, "In your face," but --

ce qui veut dire : « Dans ta tronche. »

(Laughter)

I decided to be smarter and I wrote, "[In Arabic],"

J'ai décidé d'être meilleur et d'écrire :

(en arabe)

which means, "Open your heart."

ce qui veut dire : « Ouvre ton cœur. »

I'm really proud of my culture,

Je suis très fier de ma culture,

and I'm trying to be an ambassador of it through my artwork.

et j'essaie de la promouvoir à travers mes œuvres.

And I hope that I can break the stereotypes we all know,

J'espère pouvoir briser les stéréotypes que l'on connaît tous

with the beauty of Arabic script.

grâce à la beauté de l'écriture arabe.

Today, I don't write the translation of the message anymore on the wall.

Désormais, je n'écris plus la traduction du message sur le mur.

I don't want the poetry of the calligraphy to be broken,

Je ne veux pas rompre la poésie de la calligraphie.

as it's art and you can appreciate it without knowing the meaning,

C'est de l'art, et on peut l'apprécier sans le sens,

as you can enjoy any music from other countries.

comme on peut aimer la musique étrangère.

Some people see that as a rejection or a closed door,

Certains voient là un rejet, ou une porte close.

but for me, it's more an invitation --

Pour moi, c'est plutôt une invitation à ma langue, ma culture et mon art.

to my language, to my culture, and to my art.
