In 2012, when I painted the minaret of Jara Mosque

ساڵی ٢٠١٢، کاتێک منارەی .مزگەوتی (جارا)م ڕەنگ کرد

in my hometown of Gabés, in the south of Tunisia,

لە شارەکەم گابێس .لە باشوری تونس

I never thought that graffiti would bring so much attention to a city.

هەرگیز پێموانەبوو گراڤیتی هێندە .سەرنجی ئەو شارە ڕابکێشێت

At the beginning, I was just looking for a wall in my hometown,

.سەرەتا، بۆ دیوارێک دەگەڕام لە شاره‌كەمدا

and it happened that the minaret was built in '94.

منارەیەکم دۆزییەوە .ساڵی ٩٤' دروست کرابوو

And for 18 years, those 57 meters of concrete stayed grey.

١٨ ساڵ، ئەو کۆنکرێتە ٥٧ مەترە .هێشتا ڕەنگ نەکرا بوو

When I met the imam for the first time, and I told him what I wanted to do,

کاتێک بۆ یەکەم جار ئیمامەکەم بینی ،و پێمگوت کە دەمەوێت چی بکەم

he was like, "Thank God you finally came,"

".گوتی، "سوپاس بۆخودا، دواجار هاتیت

and he told me that for years he was waiting for somebody

پێی گوتم چەندین ساڵە چاوەڕێی کەسێکە بێت و

to do something on it.

.شتێکی لەسەر بکێشێت

The most amazing thing about this imam is that he didn't ask me anything --

جوانترین شتی ئەم ئیمامە ئەوە بوو ،داوای هیچ شتێکی لێ نەکردم

neither a sketch, or what I was going to write.

.نە سکێچ، نە نوسینێک

In every work that I create, I write messages

لە هەر کارێکدا کە دەیکەم پەیامێک دەنوسم

with my style of calligraffiti -- a mix of calligraphy and graffiti.

بە ستایلی خەتخۆشی خۆم ،تێکەڵەیەک لە خەتخۆشی و گراڤیتی

I use quotes or poetry.

وتە یاخود هۆنراوە .بەکاردێنم

For the minaret, I thought that the most relevant message

بۆ منارەکە، بیرم کردەوە گونجاوترین پەیام

to be put on a mosque should come from the Quran,

،بۆ سەر مزگەتەکە .دەبێت لە قورئانەوە بێت

so I picked this verse:

:بۆیە ئەم ئایەتەم هەڵبژارد

"Oh humankind, we have created you from a male and a female,

خەڵکینە، ئێمە ئێوەمان لە" ،نێر و مێ دروست کردووە

and made you people and tribe, so you may know each other."

کردومانن بە خێڵ و کۆمەڵە ".تا یەکتر بناسن

It was a universal call for peace, tolerance, and acceptance

بانگەشەیەکی گەردونی بوو بۆ .ئاشتی، لێبوردەیی، یەکدی قوبوڵکردن

coming from the side that we don't usually portray in a good way in the media.

کە بەم جۆرە باشە لە میدیاکانەوە .پیشان نادرێت

I was amazed to see how the local community reacted to the painting,

سەرسام بووم کاتێک کاردانەوەی .خەڵکی ناوچەکەم بینی بۆ وێنەکە

and how it made them proud to see the minaret getting so much attention

زۆر شانازییان بەوەوە دەکرد کە بینییان منارەکەیان، سەرەنجێکی

from international press all around the world.

.زۆری میدیا جیهانییەکانی ڕاکێشاووە

For the imam, it was not just the painting;

،بۆ ئیمامەکە، ئەوە تەنها وێنەیەک نەبوو

it was really deeper than that.

.زۆر لەوە قوڵتر بوو

He hoped that this minaret would become a monument for the city,

بەهیوا بوو ئەو منارەیە ببێت بە ،مۆنیومێنتێک بۆ شارەکە

and attract people to this forgotten place of Tunisia.

تا سەرەنجی هەموو ناوچە .لەبیرکراوەکانی تونس ڕابکێشێت

The universality of the message,

،جیهانییەتی پەیامەکە

the political context of Tunisia at this time,

دۆخی سیاسی ئێستای تونس و

and the fact that I was writing Quran in a graffiti way

وه‌ ئەو ڕاستییەی کە من قورئان دەنوسمەوە بە ستایلی گراڤیتی

were not insignificant.

.شتی بچووک و کەم نەبوون

It reunited the community.

جارێکی دی کۆمەڵگەی .کۆکردەوە

Bringing people, future generations,

،کۆکردنەوەی خەڵک و نەوەی داهاتووە

together through Arabic calligraphy

بەیەکەوە لە ڕیگەی کارێکی خەتخۆشی عەرەبییەوە

is what I do.

.کارێكه‌ من دەیكه‌م

Writing messages is the essence of my artwork.

.نوسینی پەیام، ڕوحی کارە هونەریەکانمە

What is funny, actually, is that even Arabic-speaking people

ئەوەی کە زۆر خۆشە، ئەوەیە تەنانەت خەڵکی عەرەبیش

really need to focus a lot to decipher what I'm writing.

دەبێت زۆر ورببنەوە .تا بزانن چیم نوسیوە

You don't need to know the meaning to feel the piece.

پێویست ناکات لە ماناکەی بگەیت .بۆ ئەوەی هەست بە وێنه‌كه‌ بکەیت

I think that Arabic script touches your soul before it reaches your eyes.

پێموایە خەتی عەرەبی پێش ئەوەی .بگاتە چاوت، کار لە ڕوحت دەکات

There is a beauty in it that you don't need to translate.

.جوانییەکی تێدایە پێوسیت بە وەرگێڕان ناکات

Arabic script speaks to anyone, I believe;

پێموایە خەتی عەرەبی قسە ،بۆ هەموو کەس دەکات

to you, to you, to you, to anybody,

.بۆ تۆ، بۆ تۆش، بۆ هەموو کەس

and then when you get the meaning,

،دواتر کاتێک لە ماناکەی تێگەیشتیت

you feel connected to it.

هەست دەکەیت .پێوەی کۆنێکت بویت

I always make sure to write messages

هەمیشە جەخت لەوە دەکەمەوە پەیامێک بنوسم

that are relevant to the place where I'm painting,

پەیوەستبێت بەو شوێنەوە .تابلۆکەی لێ دەکێشم

but messages that have a universal dimension,

بەڵام ئەو پەیامانەی ،کە ڕەهەندێکی گەردوونیان هەیە

so anybody around the world can connect to it.

تا هەموو کەس بگرێتەوە .لە هەموو جیهاندا

I was born and raised in France, in Paris,

.لە پاریس لەدایک بووم و گەورە بووم

and I started learning how to write and read Arabic when I was 18.

فێری نوسین و خوێندنەوەی .عه‌رەبی بووم کاتێک ١٨ ساڵ بووم

Today I only write messages in Arabic.

.ئیستا تەنها پەیام بە عەرەبی دەنوسم

One of the reasons this is so important to me,

،یەکێک لەو هۆکارانەی کە زۆر گرنگن بۆم

is because of all the reaction that I've experienced all around the world.

ئەو هەموو کاردانەوانەن کە لە هەموو .دونیادا ئەزموونم کردوون

In Rio de Janeiro, I translated this Portuguese poem

لە ڕیۆ دێ جێنیرۆ، هۆنراوەیەکی ،پورتوگالیم وەرگێڕا

from Gabriela Tôrres Barbosa,

هی گابرێلا تۆرێس باربۆسا بوو

who was giving an homage to the poor people of the favela,

کە ستایشی هەژارانی گەڕەکە .هەژارنشینەکان دەکات

and then I painted it on the rooftop.

.دواتر لەسەر سەربانێک نەخشاندم

The local community were really intrigued by what I was doing,

دواتر خەڵکی ناوچەکە زۆر تەماشای کارەکەمیان دەکرد

but as soon as I gave them the meaning of the calligraphy,

بەڵام کاتێک مانای وێنە ،نەخشێنراوەکەم پێ گوتن

they thanked me, as they felt connected to the piece.

سوپاسیان کردم، چونکە هەستیان .کرد بەشێکن لە ئیشەکە

In South Africa, in Cape Town,

لە باشوری ئەفریقا ،له‌ شاری كه‌یپ تاون

the local community of Philippi

،خەڵکی فیلیپی

offered me the only concrete wall of the slum.

تەنها دیواری کۆنکرێتی .گەڕەکە هەژارەکەیان داپێم

It was a school, and I wrote on it

قوتابخانە بوو

a quote from Nelson Mandela,

دێڕێکی ماندێلام ،لێ نوسی

saying, "[in Arabic],"

("دەیگوت، ("قسەکردن بە عەرەبی

which means, "It seems impossible until it's done."

واتە، "لە مەحاڵ دەچێت ".تا جێبەجێ دەکرێت

Then this guy came to me and said, "Man, why you don't write in English?"

دواتر پیاوێک هات پێیگوتم "هێی بۆچی بە ئینگلیزی نانوسیت؟"

and I replied to him, "I would consider your concern legit if you asked me

لە وەڵامدا گوتم، "داواکارییەکەتم بە ڕەوا دەزانی گەر بتپرسیایە

why I didn't write in Zulu."

".بۆچی بە زولو نانوسم

In Paris, once, there was this event,

جارێکیان لە پاریس ،چالاکییەک هەبوو

and someone gave his wall to be painted.

.کەسێک دیوارێکی دامێ تا ڕەنگی بکەم

And when he saw I was painting in Arabic,

،کاتێک بینی بە عەرەبی دەنوسم

he got so mad -- actually, hysterical -- and he asked for the wall to be erased.

.زۆر توڕەبوو و داوای کرد نوسینەکە بسڕمەوە

I was mad and disappointed.

منیش توڕە و .بێ هیوا بووم

But a week later, the organizer of the event asked me to come back,

دوای هەفتەیەک، بەڕێوەبەری چالاکییەکە ،داوای لێکردم بگەڕێمەوە

and he told me that there was a wall right in front of this guy's house.

پێیگوتم کە دیواریک هەیە .لەبەردەم ماڵی ئەم کەسەدا

So, this guy --

--ئەو کەسەش

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

like, was forced to see it every day.

.ناچاربوو هەموو ڕۆژێک بیبینێت

At the beginning, I was going to write, "[In Arabic],"

سەرەتا بیرم کردەوە بنوسم "[قسەکردن بە عەرەبی]"

which means, "In your face," but --

واتا، "لەسەر "ڕوخسارت

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

I decided to be smarter and I wrote, "[In Arabic],"

دواتر بڕیارمدا ژیرتر بم و نوسیم "[قسەکردن بە عەرەبی]"

which means, "Open your heart."

".واتا، "دڵت بکەرەوە

I'm really proud of my culture,

،زۆر شانازی بە کلتورەکەمەوە دەکەم

and I'm trying to be an ambassador of it through my artwork.

دەشمەوێت ببم بە باڵوێزی کلتورەکەم .لەڕێگەی کارەکانمەوە

And I hope that I can break the stereotypes we all know,

بەهیواشم بتوانم ئەو کڵێشەیە تێکبشکێنم ،کە هەموومان پێی ئاشناین

with the beauty of Arabic script.

.لە ڕیگەی جوانییەکانی خەتی عەرەبییەوە

Today, I don't write the translation of the message anymore on the wall.

ئێستا چیتر وەرگێڕانی ئەو ،پەیامانە لەسەر دیوارەکان نانوسم

I don't want the poetry of the calligraphy to be broken,

نامەوێت شعرییەتی خەتەکان تێکبشکێن

as it's art and you can appreciate it without knowing the meaning,

لە ڕێگەی هونەرەوە دەتوانیت ،پەی پێ ببەیت بێ ئەوەی لێ تێبگەیت

as you can enjoy any music from other countries.

وەک چۆن دەتوانیت چێژ .لە مۆسیقای هەموو وڵاتان وەربگریت

Some people see that as a rejection or a closed door,

هەندێک کەس پێیان وایە ،ئەمە ڕەتکردنەوە و داخراوییە

but for me, it's more an invitation --

--بەڵام بۆ من، ئەوە بانگەشەیەکە

to my language, to my culture, and to my art.

بۆ زمانەکەم، بۆ کلتورەکەم .بۆ هونەرەکەم
