In 2012, when I painted the minaret of Jara Mosque

in my hometown of Gabés, in the south of Tunisia,

I never thought that graffiti would bring so much attention to a city.

At the beginning, I was just looking for a wall in my hometown,

처음에 저는 제 고향에서 벽을 찾고 있었죠.

and it happened that the minaret was built in '94.

그리고 1994년도에 미나렛이 지어졌습니다.

And for 18 years, those 57 meters of concrete stayed grey.

18년 동안, 57미터에 달하는 콘크리는 회색이었습니다.

When I met the imam for the first time, and I told him what I wanted to do,

제가 이맘을 처음 만났을 때 그에게 제가 원하는 것에 대해 이야기했죠.

he was like, "Thank God you finally came,"

and he told me that for years he was waiting for somebody

to do something on it.

The most amazing thing about this imam is that he didn't ask me anything --

neither a sketch, or what I was going to write.

스케치도 제가 어떤 것을 써넣을지에 대해서도 묻지 않았죠.

In every work that I create, I write messages

저는 제가 만드는 매 작품마다 메세지를 담습니다.

with my style of calligraffiti -- a mix of calligraphy and graffiti.

캘리그래피와 그래피티가 합쳐진 제 스타일의 캘리그래피티로요.

I use quotes or poetry.

저는 문구나 시를 사용합니다.

For the minaret, I thought that the most relevant message

이슬람교 사원의 미나렛과 가장 연관성있는 메세지는

to be put on a mosque should come from the Quran,

코란에서 나와야만 한다고 생각했습니다.

so I picked this verse:

그래서 저는 이 시를 골랐습니다.

"Oh humankind, we have created you from a male and a female,

"오, 인류여. 우리는 한 남자와 여자로부터 너희를 창조하였다.

and made you people and tribe, so you may know each other."

너희 민족과 부족을 이루게 했으니 서로 어울리도록 하여라"

It was a universal call for peace, tolerance, and acceptance

보통 매체에서는 좋게 보지 않는 방법에서 나온

coming from the side that we don't usually portray in a good way in the media.

평화, 관용, 그리고 수용을 촉구하는 보편적인 메시지였습니다.

I was amazed to see how the local community reacted to the painting,

저는 지역 사회에서 이 페인팅에 대해 보여준 반응과

and how it made them proud to see the minaret getting so much attention

어떻게 그것이 그들이 미나렛을 보는 것을 자랑스럽게 만들었는지

from international press all around the world.

전세계의 해외 언론으로부터의 너무 많은 관심을 얻어 놀랐습니다.

For the imam, it was not just the painting;

이맘에게 이것은 단순한 페인팅이 아니였습니다.

it was really deeper than that.

그것보다도 훨씬 깊은 의미가 있었죠.

He hoped that this minaret would become a monument for the city,

그는 이 미나렛이 도시에 기념탑이 되고

and attract people to this forgotten place of Tunisia.

튀니지의 잊혀진 장소인 이 곳으로 사람들을 불러 모으길 바랬죠.

The universality of the message,

메세지의 보편성,

the political context of Tunisia at this time,

이 당시의 튀니지의 정치적인 내용,

and the fact that I was writing Quran in a graffiti way

그래피티로 코란을 적은 사실은

were not insignificant.

중요하지 않았습니다.

It reunited the community.

그것은 지역사회를 재결합시켰습니다.

Bringing people, future generations,

사람들을 불러모아 미래의 세대들 모두가

together through Arabic calligraphy

아랍어 캘리그래피로 하나게 되게 함이

is what I do.

제가 하는 일입니다.

Writing messages is the essence of my artwork.

메세지를 담는 것이 제 작품의 진수입니다.

What is funny, actually, is that even Arabic-speaking people

사실 재밌는 점은 아랍어권 사람도

really need to focus a lot to decipher what I'm writing.

제가 쓴 것을 판독하기 위해서는 굉장히 집중할 필요가 있습니다.

You don't need to know the meaning to feel the piece.

그 작품을 느끼기 위해 당신이 그 의미를 알 필요는 없습니다.

I think that Arabic script touches your soul before it reaches your eyes.

아랍어 문자가 당신의 눈에 도달하기 전에 먼저 마음을 울린다고 생각합니다.

There is a beauty in it that you don't need to translate.

번역할 필요가 없다는 것이 이 작품의 포인트입니다.

Arabic script speaks to anyone, I believe;

아랍어 문자는 누구에게나 말을 한다고 믿습니다.

to you, to you, to you, to anybody,

당신에게, 당신에게, 당신에게, 누구에게나요.

and then when you get the meaning,

당신이 그 의미를 깨닫는 순간

you feel connected to it.

당신은 그것과 연결되어 있다고 느낄겁니다.

I always make sure to write messages

저는 항상 제가 페인팅하는 장소와

that are relevant to the place where I'm painting,

연관된 메세지를 쓰려고 노력했습니다.

but messages that have a universal dimension,

하지만 메세지들은 보편적인 차원을 가지기에

so anybody around the world can connect to it.

전세계의 누구나 그것과 연결될 수 있습니다.

I was born and raised in France, in Paris,

저는 프랑스 파리에서 태어나고 자랐습니다.

and I started learning how to write and read Arabic when I was 18.

그리고 제가 18살 때 아랍어를 쓰는 법과 읽는 법을 배우기 시작했죠.

Today I only write messages in Arabic.

오늘날 저는 아랍어로만 메세지를 적습니다.

One of the reasons this is so important to me,

이것이 제게 아주 중요한 이유가

is because of all the reaction that I've experienced all around the world.

전세계에서 제가 경험했던 모든 반응들 때문입니다.

In Rio de Janeiro, I translated this Portuguese poem

리우데자네이루에서, 저는 빈민지역의 가난한 사람들에게 경의를 표하는

from Gabriela Tôrres Barbosa,

가브리엘라 토레스 바르보사의

who was giving an homage to the poor people of the favela,

포르투갈어 시를 번역해서

and then I painted it on the rooftop.

The local community were really intrigued by what I was doing,

but as soon as I gave them the meaning of the calligraphy,

they thanked me, as they felt connected to the piece.

In South Africa, in Cape Town,

the local community of Philippi

offered me the only concrete wall of the slum.

It was a school, and I wrote on it

그것은 학교였고, 저는 거기에 이렇게 썼습니다.

a quote from Nelson Mandela,

saying, "[in Arabic],"

which means, "It seems impossible until it's done."

Then this guy came to me and said, "Man, why you don't write in English?"

and I replied to him, "I would consider your concern legit if you asked me

why I didn't write in Zulu."

In Paris, once, there was this event,

파리에서는 언제 한 번 이런 행사가 있었습니다.

and someone gave his wall to be painted.

누군가 자기 벽을 주며 그려달라고 했습니다.

And when he saw I was painting in Arabic,

그리고 그가 제가 아랍어로 페인팅을 하는 것을 보고는

he got so mad -- actually, hysterical -- and he asked for the wall to be erased.

그는 몹시 화가 나 신경질을 부리며 제게 벽에 그린 걸 지우라고 했죠.

I was mad and disappointed.

저는 화가 났고 동시에 실망스러웠습니다.

But a week later, the organizer of the event asked me to come back,

그러나 일주일 후, 그 행사의 주최자가 제게 다시 돌아와 달라고 요청했습니다.

and he told me that there was a wall right in front of this guy's house.

그리고 그는 제게 이 남자의 집 바로 앞에 벽이 있다고 말했습니다.

So, this guy --

(Laughter)

like, was forced to see it every day.

반강제적으로 매일 그것을 봐야만 했죠.

At the beginning, I was going to write, "[In Arabic],"

which means, "In your face," but --

I decided to be smarter and I wrote, "[In Arabic],"

which means, "Open your heart."

I'm really proud of my culture,

저는 제 문화가 너무나 자랑스럽습니다.

and I'm trying to be an ambassador of it through my artwork.

그리고 저는 제 작품을 통해 한 명의 대사로서의 역할을 하려고 합니다.

And I hope that I can break the stereotypes we all know,

그리고 우리가 알고있는 고정관념을 아랍어의 아름다움으로

with the beauty of Arabic script.

제가 깰 수 있기를 바랍니다.

Today, I don't write the translation of the message anymore on the wall.

오늘날 저는 더 이상 벽에 쓴 메세지에 대한 해석을 쓰지 않습니다.

I don't want the poetry of the calligraphy to be broken,

저는 캘리그래피로 쓰여진 그 시의 본연의 의미 그대로 나둡니다.

as it's art and you can appreciate it without knowing the meaning,

여러분은 그것의 의미를 이해함 없이 예술 그 자체로써 감사할 수 있습니다.

마치 여러분이 다른 나라의 어떤 음악이든지 즐길 수 있는 것처럼요.

as you can enjoy any music from other countries.

Some people see that as a rejection or a closed door,

어떤 사람은 거부나 닫혀진 문으로써 보죠.

but for me, it's more an invitation --

하지만 제게는 하나의 초대 그 이상입니다.

to my language, to my culture, and to my art.

저의 언어, 저의 문화 그리고 저의 예술에 대해서입니다.
