In 2012, when I painted the minaret of Jara Mosque

વર્ષ 2012 માં,જારા મસ્જીદના મિનારાને રંગવામાં આવ્યો,

in my hometown of Gabés, in the south of Tunisia,

ત્યારે મેં વિચાર્યું નોહતું કે, ગ્રાફ્ફીતી એક શહેરને,

I never thought that graffiti would bring so much attention to a city.

આકર્ષણનું કેન્દ્ર બનાવી શકે.

At the beginning, I was just looking for a wall in my hometown,

આ વાત છે,મારા વતન, ગેબ્સની,જે દક્ષિણ ત્યુનીશીયામાં આવેલ છે.

and it happened that the minaret was built in '94.

શરૂઆત મેં જગ્યા શોધાવથી કરી, તેનો અંત, એક મિનારા પર આવ્યો,

And for 18 years, those 57 meters of concrete stayed grey.

જે ૧૮વર્ષે પેહલા ૧૯૯૪માં, બાંધવામાં આવ્યો હતો.૫૭ મીટર ઉંચો આ મિનારો,

When I met the imam for the first time, and I told him what I wanted to do,

આજદિન સુધી રંગહીન રહ્યો હતો. જયારે મેં ઈમામને મળીને જણાવ્યું કે,

he was like, "Thank God you finally came,"

હું આવું કરવા વિચારી રહ્યો છું.

and he told me that for years he was waiting for somebody

એમણે કહ્યું,"ઈશ્વરનો આભાર,કે તમે આવ્યા." હું વર્ષોથી,

to do something on it.

કોઈકની રાહ જોઈ રહ્યો હતો,

The most amazing thing about this imam is that he didn't ask me anything --

જે એનાપર કંઈક કરે.

neither a sketch, or what I was going to write.

સૌથી આશ્ચર્યચકિત કરનારી વાત એ હતી કે, એમણે મને પુછ્યું પણ નહિ કે,

In every work that I create, I write messages

હું ત્યાં શું કરવાનો છું, કે શું ચિત્ર દોરવાનો છું.

with my style of calligraffiti -- a mix of calligraphy and graffiti.

હું મારા કોઇપણ કાર્યમાં,મારી શૈલીમાં કોયનેકોય સંદેશો વણીલવ,

I use quotes or poetry.

કેલીગ્રાફ્ફી ને ગ્રાફ્ફીતીનો સમન્વય હોય.

For the minaret, I thought that the most relevant message

મિનારા પર, સૌથી સુસંગત સંદેશો મુકવામાં આવે,

to be put on a mosque should come from the Quran,

જે કુરાનમાંથી લીધેલો હોવો જોયે. મેં આ આયાત પસંદ કરી,

so I picked this verse:

"ઓહ માનવજાત,અમે સ્ત્રી બનાવ્યા,

"Oh humankind, we have created you from a male and a female,

પુરુષ બનાવ્યા, અને ભિન્ન જાતી અને લોકો બનાવ્યા,

and made you people and tribe, so you may know each other."

જેથી તમો એકબીજાને જાણી શકો."

It was a universal call for peace, tolerance, and acceptance

આ સૌ માટે શાંતિ,સ્વીકૃતિ અને સહનશીલતાનો, સવાર્ત્રિક સંદેશ હતો

coming from the side that we don't usually portray in a good way in the media.

જે હકીકતમાં પ્રસાર માધ્યમો થકી, સાચી રીતે રજુ થતો નથી.

I was amazed to see how the local community reacted to the painting,

મને સ્થાનિક સમુદાયની, પ્રતિક્રિયા વિષે જાણીને ઘણું આશ્ચર્ય થયું,

and how it made them proud to see the minaret getting so much attention

અને ખાસ કરીને, જયારે આ મિનારાએ દુનિયાના, વિવીધ પ્રસારણ માધ્યમથકી ગૌરવ અપવડાવ્યું.

from international press all around the world.

ઈમામ માટે તોઆ માત્ર ચિત્ર હતું, આ એનાથી ઘણું વધારે હતું.

For the imam, it was not just the painting;

એમની ઈચ્છા હતી કે,મિનારો

it was really deeper than that.

શહેરનું જાણીતું સ્મારક બને.

He hoped that this minaret would become a monument for the city,

અને વિસરાયી ગયેલી જગ્યા-ત્યુનીશીયાને, આકર્ષણનું કેન્દ્ર બનાવે.

and attract people to this forgotten place of Tunisia.

આ સંદેશની સર્વવ્યાપકતા ત્યારે છતી થઇ,

The universality of the message,

જયારે ત્યુનીશીયાની રાજકીય હાલત

the political context of Tunisia at this time,

અને ગ્રાફિટી મદદથી કુરાનનું લખવું,

and the fact that I was writing Quran in a graffiti way

એ નોંધપાત્ર ગણાયું.

were not insignificant.

એણે સમુદાયને ફરીથી,

It reunited the community.

સંગઠિત કરી દીધા.

Bringing people, future generations,

અરેબિક "કલીગ્રાફી" મારફતે હું લોકો ને,

together through Arabic calligraphy

ભાવી પેઢીથી નજીક લાવું છું.

is what I do.

સંદેશોનું લેખન એ,

Writing messages is the essence of my artwork.

મારા કૌશલ્યનો સાર છે.

What is funny, actually, is that even Arabic-speaking people

નવાઈની વાત એ છે કે,અરેબીક-જાણનારા લોકોને,

really need to focus a lot to decipher what I'm writing.

પણ સમજવા ઘણું મથવું પડે છે.

You don't need to know the meaning to feel the piece.

તમારે પ્રાવીણ્યને સમજવા,લખાણનો અર્થ સમજવો જરૂરી નથી.

I think that Arabic script touches your soul before it reaches your eyes.

અરેબિક લખાણ તમારા હ્રિદયસ્પર્શી ઉતરી જાય છે.

There is a beauty in it that you don't need to translate.

એની ખાસિયત એ છે કે એને અનુવાદની જરૂર નથી.

Arabic script speaks to anyone, I believe;

અરેબિક લીપી, કોઈપણ સમજી શકે છે.

to you, to you, to you, to anybody,

- તમે, તમે,તમે કે કોઈપણ.

and then when you get the meaning,

જયારે તમને એનો અર્થ સમજાય છે,

you feel connected to it.

તમે એની સાથે જોડાય જાવ છો.

I always make sure to write messages

હું હમેશા જગ્યાને અનુરૂપ સંદેશ પસંદ કરું છું,

that are relevant to the place where I'm painting,

સંદેશા હંમેશા સર્વવ્યાપી હોવા જોયે,

but messages that have a universal dimension,

જેથી કરીને કોઈપણ એની સાથે જોડાઈ શકે.

so anybody around the world can connect to it.

મારો જન્મ અને ઉછેર ફ્રાંસમાં, આવેલ "પેરીસ" માં થયેલ છે.

I was born and raised in France, in Paris,

હું ૧૮વર્ષનો હતો,

and I started learning how to write and read Arabic when I was 18.

ત્યારથી અરેબિક લખતા-વાંચતા શીખ્યો છું

Today I only write messages in Arabic.

હવે હું માંત્ર એરબિકમાં જ સંદેશા લખું છું.

One of the reasons this is so important to me,

એનું મુખ્ય કારણ,

is because of all the reaction that I've experienced all around the world.

એ મારા વિશ્વના અનુભવોના પ્રત્યાઘાત છે.

In Rio de Janeiro, I translated this Portuguese poem

રીઓ-દી-જાનેરોમાં, મેં ગબેરીએલા તોર્રુસ બર્બોસાની

from Gabriela Tôrres Barbosa,

પોર્ટુગીઝ કવિતાનો અનુવાદ કર્યો હતો.

who was giving an homage to the poor people of the favela,

જે ફાવેલાના દુર્ભાગી વ્યક્તિઓને શ્રદ્ધાંજલિ હતી.

and then I painted it on the rooftop.

તે મેં એક છત પર આલેખી હતી.

The local community were really intrigued by what I was doing,

શરૂઆતમાં સ્થાનિક રેહવાસીઓએ મારી નિંદા કરી હતી,

but as soon as I gave them the meaning of the calligraphy,

પણ જયારે તેમને કલ્લીગ્રાફીનો અર્થ સમજાવ્યો,તેમણે મારો આભાર માન્યો.

they thanked me, as they felt connected to the piece.

તેમને લાગ્યું કે, તેઓ એની સાથે જોડાય ગયા છે.

In South Africa, in Cape Town,

સાઉથ આફ્રિકાના કેપટાવનમાં,

the local community of Philippi

સ્થાનિક જાતિ,ફીલીપ્પી એ

offered me the only concrete wall of the slum.

મને એક ઝુપડપત્તિની દિવાલ પર ચિત્ર કરવાનો આગ્રહ કર્યો.

It was a school, and I wrote on it

જે એક શાળા હતી.

a quote from Nelson Mandela,

મેં એના પર નેલ્સન મંડેલાની

saying, "[in Arabic],"

એક ઉક્તિ કંડારી, "[અરેબિકમાં],"તેનો અર્થ,

which means, "It seems impossible until it's done."

"જ્યાં સુધી પૂર્ણ નથી થતું, ત્યાં સુધી અઘરું છે."

Then this guy came to me and said, "Man, why you don't write in English?"

તેઓ કેહવા લાગ્યા કે, "તું શા માટે અંગ્રેઝી માં નથી લખતો?"

and I replied to him, "I would consider your concern legit if you asked me

મેં કહ્યું,"હું તમારી વાત સાથે તોજ ધ્યાનમાં લેત,અગર તમે મને પુછ્યું હોત કે,

why I didn't write in Zulu."

હું કેમ ઝૂલું માં નથી લખતો?

In Paris, once, there was this event,

એકવાર પેરીસમાં,એક ઘટના ઘટી,

and someone gave his wall to be painted.

મને એક દીવાલ પર, ચિત્રનો આગ્રહ કરવામાં આવ્યો,

And when he saw I was painting in Arabic,

જયારે તેમણે જોયું કે,હું અરેબિકમાં લખી રહ્યો છું.

he got so mad -- actually, hysterical -- and he asked for the wall to be erased.

એ પાગલ થાયને ગુસ્સામાં ધ્રુજવા લાગ્યો, મને બધું જ ભૂસી નાખવા જણાયું.

I was mad and disappointed.

હું નાસીપાસ થાય ગયો. પણ એક અઠવાડિયા પછી,

But a week later, the organizer of the event asked me to come back,

આયોજકે મને પાછો બોલાવ્યો અને જણાવ્યું કે,

and he told me that there was a wall right in front of this guy's house.

અ દિવાલ એના ઘરની સામે પડે છે,

So, this guy --

તેથી તેણે -

(Laughter)

(હાસ્ય)

like, was forced to see it every day.

દિવાલ એણે પરાણે જોવી પડત.

At the beginning, I was going to write, "[In Arabic],"

પેહલા,હું તેના પર લખવા માંગતો હતો, "[અરેબિકમાં]"

which means, "In your face," but --

જેનો મતલબ હતો. "તારા ચેહરા પર".

(Laughter)

(હાસ્ય)

I decided to be smarter and I wrote, "[In Arabic],"

પછી મેં થોડી સમજદારી વાપરી અને લખ્યું,"[અરેબિકમાં]",

which means, "Open your heart."

જેનો મતલબ થાય "હ્રિદય વિશાળ રાખો."

I'm really proud of my culture,

મને મારી સંસ્કૃતિ પર ગર્વ છે,

and I'm trying to be an ambassador of it through my artwork.

અને હું એક રાજદુત બનીને મારા કાર્ય થકી મારી સંસ્કૃતિ ફેલાવો કરવા માંગું છું,

And I hope that I can break the stereotypes we all know,

અને હું માનું છું કે, અરેબિક ભાષાની સુંદરતા થકી,

with the beauty of Arabic script.

હું પ્રથાઓ નાબુદ કરી શકિશ.

Today, I don't write the translation of the message anymore on the wall.

હવેથી હું,કોઈ સંદેશાનો અનુવાદ નથી લખતો,

I don't want the poetry of the calligraphy to be broken,

કેલીગ્રફ્હીને મહત્વતા ઓછી થાય એ પસંદ નથી.

as it's art and you can appreciate it without knowing the meaning,

એ કળા છે,અને તમે તેનો અર્થ જાણ્યા વગર એને વખાણી શકો છો.

as you can enjoy any music from other countries.

જેવી રીતે બીજા દેશનું સંગીત માણી શકો છો.

Some people see that as a rejection or a closed door,

ઘણાલોકો આને,અસ્વીકાર્યતા કે જીદ્દીવલણ કહે છે, -

but for me, it's more an invitation --

પણ મારા માટે એ આમંત્રણ છે -

to my language, to my culture, and to my art.

મારી ભાષા,મારી સંસ્કૃતિ અને મારી કલાનું.
