Ladies and gentlemen, gather around.

خانمان و بەڕێزان، کۆببنەوە.

I would love to share with you a story.

حەز دەکەم چیڕۆکێکتان لەگەڵ هاوبەشی پێبکەم.

Once upon a time

جارێکیان

in 19th century Germany,

لە سەدەی نۆزدەیەم لە ئەڵمانیا،

there was the book.

پەرتووکێک هەبوو.

Now during this time,

ئێستا لەم کاتەدا،

the book was the king of storytelling.

پەرتووکەکە پاشای چیڕۆک گێڕانەوەکەیە.

It was venerable.

بەنرخ بوو.

It was ubiquitous.

جیهانی بوو.

But it was a little bit boring.

بەڵام کەمێک بێزارکەر بوو.

Because in its 400 years of existence,

چونکە لە ٤٠٠ ساڵی بوونیدا،

storytellers never evolved the book

چیڕۆک بێژەکان هەرگیز پەرتووکەکەیان

as a storytelling device.

وەک ئامێرێکی چیرۆک گێڕانەوە بەکارنەهێنا.

But then one author arrived,

بەڵام دواتر نوسەرێک گەیشت،

and he changed the game forever.

و یاریەکەی گۆڕی بۆ هەمیشە.

His name was Lothar,

ناوی لۆسەر بوو،

Lothar Meggendorfer.

لۆسەر میگێندۆرفەر.

Lothar Meggendorfer put his foot down,

لۆسەر میگێندۆرفەر ڕێگری کرد،

and he said, "Genug ist genug!"

و گوتی، “ئیتر بەسە!”

He grabbed his pen,

پێنووسەکەی هێنا،

he snatched his scissors.

مەقەستەکانی هێنا.

ئەم پیاوە ڕەتیکردەوە بەژداربێت لە کۆنگرە ئاساییەکان

This man refused to fold to the conventions of normalcy

and just decided to fold.

و بڕیاری دا تاو بدات.

History would know Lothar Meggendorfer

مێژوو لۆسەر میگێندۆرفەر دەناسێت

as -- who else? --

وەک-- کێی تر؟

the world's first true inventor

یەکەم نووسەری ڕاستەقینەی جیهانی

of the children's pop-up book.

بۆ چیڕۆک نووسی منداڵان.

(Music)

مۆسیقا

For this delight and for this wonder,

بۆ ئەم دڵخۆشییە و ئەم پرسە،

people rejoiced.

خەڵکی ئاهەنگیان گێڕا.

(Cheering)

(خۆشی گێڕان)

They were happy because the story survived,

ئەوان دڵخۆش بوون چونکە چیرۆکەکە ڕزگاری بوو،

and that the world would keep on spinning.

و جیهان بەردەوام دەبێت لە سوڕانەوە.

Lothar Meggendorfer wasn't the first

لۆسەر میگێندۆرفەر یەکەم کەس نەبوو

to evolve the way a story was told,

لە گەشەپێدانی ئەم شێوازی چیڕۆک گێڕانەوەیە،

and he certainly wasn't the last.

و بەدڵنیاییەوە کۆتا کەسیش نەبوو.

هەرچەند ئەگەر چیڕۆک بێژەکان درکیان پێکردبێت یاخود نا،

Whether storytellers realized it or not,

they were channeling Meggendorfer's spirit

ڕۆحی میگێندۆرفەریان داگیرکرد

when they moved opera to vaudville,

کاتێک ئۆپێرایان گواستەوە بۆ ڤۆدڤیل،

radio news to radio theater,

هەواڵەکانی ڕادیۆ بۆ شانۆگەری ڕادیۆ،

film to film in motion

فیلم بۆ فیلم لە جووڵە

to film in sound, color, 3D,

بۆ فیلم لە دەنگ، ڕەنگ و سێ دووری،

on VHS and on DVD.

لە سیستەمی ڤیدیۆیی ماڵان و دی ڤی دی.

There seemed to be no cure for this Meggendorferitis.

وادیارە هیچ چارەسەرێک بۆ ئەم میگێندۆرفەرییە نییە.

And things got a lot more fun when the Internet came around.

و شتەکان زۆر خۆشتر بوون کاتێک ئینتەرنێت هات.

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

چونکە، تەنها خەڵکی ناتوانن چیرۆکەکانیان لە سەرانسەری جیهاندا بڵاو بکەنەوە،

Because, not only could people broadcast their stories throughout the world,

but they could do so

بەڵکو ئەوانیش دەتوانن

using what seemed to be an infinite amount of devices.

لە ڕێگەی بەکارهێنانی ئەو شتانەی کە وەکو ئامێری بێ کۆتایی بن.

For example, one company

بۆ نموونە، هاوبەشێک

would tell a story of love

چیڕۆکی خۆشەویستی دەگێڕێتەوە

through its very own search engine.

لە ڕێگەی ئامرازی گەڕانی خۆیی.

One Taiwanese production studio

ستۆدیۆیەکی بەرهەمهێنی تایوانی

would interpret American politics in 3D.

سیاسەتی ئەمریکییەکان بە سێ دووری لێکدەداتەوە.

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

And one man would tell the stories of his father

و پیاوێک چیڕۆکی باوکی دەگێڕێتەوە

by using a platform called Twitter

لەڕێگەی ئامرازێکەوە بەناوی تویتەر

to communicate the excrement his father would gesticulate.

بۆ باسکردنی پیسایی باوکی کە دەبێتە هۆی نیشان کردن.

And after all this, everyone paused;

لەدوای ئەمانە، هەمووان وەستان؛

they took a step back.

هەنگاوێک گەڕانەوە.

They realized that, in 6,000 years of storytelling,

درکیان بەوە کرد، کە لە ٦٠٠٠ ساڵی چیڕۆک گێڕانەوە،

they've gone from depicting hunting on cave walls

وازیانهێنا لەسەر وێنەکێشانی ڕاوکردن لەسەر دیوارەکانی ئەشکەوت

to depicting Shakespeare on Facebook walls.

بۆ وێنەکێشانی شکسپیر لە دیوارەکانی فەیسبوک.

And this was a cause for celebration.

و ئەوە هۆکاری ئاهەنگ گێڕان بوو.

The art of storytelling has remained unchanged.

هونەری چیڕۆک گێڕانەوە بە نەگۆڕی ماوەتەوە.

And for the most part, the stories are recycled.

و بۆ زۆر بەش، چیڕۆکەکان گێڕدراونەتەوە.

بەڵام بەو ڕێگایەی کە مرۆڤەکان چیڕۆکەکان دەگێڕنەوە

But the way that humans tell the stories

has always evolved

هەمیشە گەشەی کردووە

with pure, consistent novelty.

بە داهێنانێکی خەوش و پاک،

And they remembered a man,

و پیاوێکیان لەبیر بوو،

one amazing German,

پیاوێکی ئەڵمانی ناوازە،

every time a new storytelling device

هەموو جارێک ئامێرێکی نوێی چیڕۆک گێڕانەوەی بەکاردەهێنا.

popped up next.

And for that,

و بۆ ئەوە،

the audience --

ئامادەبووان...

the lovely, beautiful audience --

ئامادەبووە خۆشەویست، و ئازیزەکان

would live happily ever after.

خۆشتر دەژیان لەوە بەدواوە.
