by this incredible language.

အဲဒီ ဘာသာစကားကို အထူးပဲ စိတ်ဝင်စားလာခဲ့ပါတယ်။

But to an outsider, it seems to be

ဒါပေမဲ့ နိုင်ငံခြားသား တစ်ယောက်အတွက်မူ

as impenetrable as the Great Wall of China.

အဲဒီစာလုံးတွေဟာ မဟာ တရုတ်တံတိုင်ကြီးလိုပဲ နားလည်ရနိုင်မှာ မဟုတ်ဘူးလို့ ထင်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။

Over the past few years, I've been wondering

လွန်းခဲ့တဲ့နှစ် အနည်းငယ်အတွင်းမှာ၊ သိမ်မွေ့လှတဲ့ ဒီဘာသာစကားရဲ့

if I can break down this wall,

အလှအပကို နားလည်လိုကာ

so anyone who wants to understand and appreciate

the beauty of this sophisticated language could do so.

I started thinking about how a new, fast method

of learning Chinese might be useful.

Since the age of five, I started to learn how to draw

This symbol actually is originally from the shape of the flame,

but I like to think that way. Whichever works for you.

This is a tree.

The symbol of the door

looks like a pair of saloon doors in the wild west.

I call these eight characters radicals.

ကွန်မက အဲဒီ စကားလုံး ၈ လုံးကို အခြေခံစကားလုံးများလို့ ခေါ်ပါတယ်။

They are the building blocks

နောက်ထပ် စာလုံးများကို ဖန်တီးယူရန်

for you to create lots more characters.

အဲဒါတွေက် ဆောက်လုပ်ရေး အုတ်တွေနဲ့တူကြပါတယ်။

A person.

လူတစ်ယောက်။

If someone walks behind, that is "to follow."

လူတစ်ယောက်ဟာ နောက်မှာနေပြီး လမ်းလျှောက်လာရင် အဲ့ဒါကို "လိုက်လာတယ်" လို့ ပြောပါတယ်။

As the old saying goes,

စေကားပုံ အဟောင်းထဲမှာ လိုပဲ...

two is company, three is a crowd.

"လူ နှစ်ယောက်ဆိုရင် အဖေါ်များ ဖြစ်ကြတယ်။ လူသုံးယောက်ဆိုရင် လုစုလူဝေး ဖြစ်ကြတယ်။"

If a person stretched their arms wide,

လူတစ်ယောက်က သူ့ လက်တွေကို ဖြန့်ပြနေရင်

this person is saying, "It was this big."

"အဲဒါဟာ ဒီလောက်ကြီးမားခဲ့တယ်"လို့ သူက ပြောလိုပါတယ်။

The person inside the mouth, the person is trapped.

ပါးစပ်ထဲမှာ လူတစ်ယောက်၊ ပိတ်မိနေသူပါပဲ။

He's a prisoner, just like Jonah inside the whale.

One tree is a tree. Two trees together, we have the woods.

Three trees together, we create the forest.

Put a plank underneath the tree, we have the foundation.

Put a mouth on the top of the tree, that's "idiot." (Laughter)

The sun is coming up above the horizon. Sunrise.

မိုးကုပ်စက်ဝိုင်းအပေါ်မှာ နေက ထွက်လာနေတယ်။ "နေထွက်မှု" ဖြစ်ပါတယ်။

A door. Put a plank inside the door,

တံခါးပါ။ တံခါးထဲမှာ ပျဉ်းပြား တစ်ချပ်ကို ထားလိုက်ရင်

it's a door bolt.

တံခါး မင်းတုံး ဖြစ်ပါတယ်။

Put a mouth inside the door, asking questions.

By using this method, the first eight radicals

အခြေခံအကျဆုံး စာလုံး ရှစ်လုံး နည်းစနစ်ကို သုံးသွားခြင်းဖြင့်

will allow you to build 32.

ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ စာလုံး ၃၂ ကို တည်ဆောက်လို့ ရလာပါမယ်။

The next group of eight characters

အဲဒီနောက်ပိုင်း စာလုံး ရှစ်လုံးကျတော့

will build an extra 32.

နောက်ထပ် စာလုံး ၃၂ လုံးကို တည်ဆောက် လာနိုင်ပါမယ်။

So with very little effort,

အဲဒီတော့ ရှင်တို့ဟာ သိပ် အားထုတ်ရန် မလိုဘဲ

you will be able to learn a couple hundred characters,

စာလုံး အလုံး နှစ်ရာလောက်ကို သင်ယူနိုင်မှာမို့လို့

which is the same as a Chinese eight-year-old.

So after we know the characters, we start building phrases.

For example, the mountain and the fire together,

ဥပမာ တောင် နဲ့ မီး အတူတကွ မြင်ရရင်

we have fire mountain. It's a volcano.

မီးတောက်နေတဲ့ တောငကို၊တနည်း မီးတောင်ကို ရပါတယ်။

We know Japan is the land of the rising sun.

ဂျာပန်ဟာ နေထွက်သော နိုင်ငံ ဖြစ်တာကို ကျွန်မတို့ သိပါတယ်။

This is a sun placed with the origin,

ဂျပန်နိုင်ငံဟာ တရုတ်နိုင်ငံရဲ့ အရှေ့ဖက်မှာ တည်ရှိနေလို့

because Japan lies to the east of China.

နေနဲ့အတူ မူလနေရာမှာ ချပြထားပါတယ်။

So a sun, origin together, we build Japan.

ဒီလိုနည်းဖြင့် နေဟာ အစမူလနဲ့အတူ ဆိုရင် ဂျပန် ကို ကျွန်မတို့ တည်ဆောက်ယူခြင်းပါပဲ။

A person behind Japan, what do we get?

ဂျာပန်ရဲ့ နောက်မှာရှိတဲ့ လူတစ်ယောကကကော ဘာများပါလိမ့်။

A Japanese person.

The character on the left is two mountains

In ancient China, that means in exile,

because Chinese emperors, they put their political enemies

Nowadays, exile has turned into getting out.

A mouth which tells you where to get out
