So I was trained to become a gymnast

for two years in Hunan, China in the 1970s.

After surviving the Cultural Revolution,

they firmly believed there's only one sure way to happiness:

စိတ်ချမ်းသာရဖို့ သေချာတဲ့ နည်းလမ်းဟာ တစ်ခုတည်းပဲ ရှိတယ်လို့ သူတို့ စွဲစွဲမြဲမြဲယုံကြည်လာတယ်။

a safe and well-paid job.

အဲ့ဒီ နည်းလမ်းက လုံခြုံပြီး လစာကောင်းတဲ့ အလုပ်ပဲဖြစ်တယ်။

It is not important if I like the job or not.

အလုပ်ကို ကြိုက်တာ မကြိုက်တာက အရေးမကြီးဘူး။

But my dream was to become a Chinese opera singer.

ဒါပေမယ့် ကျွန်မရဲ့ အိပ်မက်က တရုတ်အော်ပရာဇာတ် အဆိုတော် ဖြစ်ဖို့ပါပဲ။

That is me playing my imaginary piano.

အဲ့ဒါက စိတ်ကူးထဲက စန္ဒရားကိုတီးနေတဲ့ ကျွန်မပါ။

An opera singer must start training young

အော်ပရာဇာတ် အဆိုတော် တစ်ဦးဟာ ငယ်စဉ်ကတည်းက

to learn acrobatics,

စပြီး ဂျွမ်းဘားကို လေ့ကျင့်ဖို့ လိုတယ်၊

so I tried everything I could to go to opera school.

အဲဒါနဲ့ ကျွန်မဟာ အော်ပရာဇာတ် ကျောင်းတက်နိုင်အောင် ရှိသမျှနည်းလမ်းများဖြင့် ကြိုးစားခဲ့တယ်။

I even wrote to the school principal

အော်ပရာဇတ်ကျောင်းရဲ့ ကျောင်းအုပ်ထံကို နဲ့

and the host of a radio show.

ရေဒီယိုအစီအစဉ် တင်ဆက်သူကိုတောင် စာရေးခဲ့ပါတယ်။

But no adults liked the idea.

No adults believed I was serious.

Only my friends supported me, but they were kids,

So at age 15, I knew I was too old to be trained.

My dream would never come true.

I was afraid that for the rest of my life

some second-class happiness

But that's so unfair.

So I was determined to find another calling.

Nobody around to teach me? Fine.

ပတ်ဝန်းကျင်မှာ ကျွန်မကို သင်ပေးနိုင်သူ ဘယ်သူမ မရှိဘူးတဲ့လား။ ကောင်းပြီ။

I turned to books.

ကျွန်မ စာအုပ်တွေဆီကို လှည့်လိုက်တယ်။

I satisfied my hunger for parental advice

စာရေးဆရာများ နဲ့ ဂီတသမားတွေ ဖြစ်တဲ့ မိသားစုက ရေးထားတဲ့ စာအုပ်နဲ့

from this book by a family of writers and musicians.["Correspondence in the Family of Fou Lei"]

မိဘအကြံဉာဏ်တွေ မရခဲ့တဲ့ ကျွန်မရဲ့ ဆာလောင်ခြင်းကို နှစ်သိမ့်ပေးခဲ့တယ်။

I found my role model of an independent woman

ကွန်ဖြူးရှပ် အစဉ်အလာများကို ခံယူလိုက်နာတဲ့

when Confucian tradition requires obedience.["Jane Eyre"]

အမှီအခိုကင်းတဲ့ အမျိုးသမီးတစ်ယောက်ဟာ ကျွန်မ လိုက်နာရမယ့် နမူနာပဲလို့ သိရှိခဲ့တယ်။

And I learned to be efficient from this book.["Cheaper by the Dozen"]

ဒီစာအုပ်ထဲကနေပြီး ကျွန်မဟာ စွမ်းဆောင်နိုင်သူ ဖြစ်ဖို့ လေ့လာခဲ့ပါတယ်။

And I was inspired to study abroad after reading these.

I came to the U.S. in 1995,

ကျွန်မ ၁၉၉၅ ခုနှစ်မှာ အမေရိကန်နိုင်ငံကို ရောက်တယ်။

so which books did I read here first?

ဒီမှာ ဦးဆုံဖတ်ခဲ့တဲ့ စာအုပ်တွေက ဘာတွေလဲထင်ပါသလဲ။

Books banned in China, of course.

တရုတ်နိုင်ငံမှာ တားမြစ်ထားတဲ့ စာအုပ်တွေပဲပေါ့။

"The Good Earth" is about Chinese peasant life.

"ကမ္ဘာကောင်း"ဟာ တရုတ် တောင်သူလယ်သမား ဘဝ အကြောင်း ရေးထားပါတယ်။

That's just not convenient for propaganda. Got it.

အဲဒီလို ဟာမျိုးက ဝါဒဖြန့်လို့ ဘယ်အဆင်ပြေမလဲ။ သဘောပေါက်ပြီ။

The Bible is interesting, but strange.

သမ္မာကျမ်းစာကတော့ စိတ်ဝင်စားစရာ ကောင်းပေမယ့် ထူးဆန်းတယ်။

That's a topic for a different day.

အဲဒါက တခြားနေ့အတွက် ဟောပြောစရာ အကြောင်းအရာပါ။

But the fifth commandment gave me an epiphany:

ဒါပေမယ့် ကျမ်းစာထဲက ပဉ္စမ ပညတ်ချက်ဟာ ကျွန်မကို ဗျာဒိတ်တစ်ခုကို ပေးခဲ့ပါတယ်။

"You shall honor your father and mother."

"သင်၏မိဘကို ရိုသေစွာပြုလော့။"

"Honor," I said. "That's so different,

"ရိုသေစွာပြု"လို့ ကျွန်မ ရွတ်ဆိုမိခဲ့ပါတယ်။

and better, than obey."

"အဲ့ဒါဟာ လုံးဝကို မတူလိုက်တာ၊ နာခံတာထက်ကို ပိုကောင်းပါလား။"

So it becomes my tool to climb out

ကွန်ဖြူးရှပ် အပြစ်ထောင်ချောက်ထဲကနေပြီး လွတ်ထွက်လာစေရေး နဲ့

of this Confucian guilt trap

ကျွန်မ မိဘတွေနဲ့ အဆယ်အသွက် ပြန်လည်

and to restart my relationship with my parents.

စတင်ရေး ကိရိယာ ဖြစ်လာတယ်။

Encountering a new culture also started my habit

ယဉ်းကျေးမှုအသစ်ကို ထိတွေ့လာရခြင်းဟာလည်း

of comparative reading.

ကျွန်မရဲ့ နှိုင်းယှဉ်ချင့်ချိန်လျက် စာဖတ်ခြင်း အစဉ်အလာ အသစ် တစ်ခုကို စပေးလိုက်တယ်။

It offers many insights.

အရာတွေကို ဖက်အမျိုးမျိုးမှ မြင်လာစေပါတယ်။

For example, I found this map out of place at first

ဥပမာ ဦးဆုံးမှာ ဒီမြေပုံဟာ အလကားပဲလို့ ကျွန်မထင်ခဲ့တယ်။

because this is what Chinese students grew up with.

တရုတ်ကလေးတွေ ငယ်ရွယ်စဉ်တုန်းက မြေပုံ ဖြစ်လို့ပါ။

It had never occurred to me,

တရုတ်နိုင်ငံဟာ ကမ္ဘာရဲ့ ဗဟိုချက် ဖြစ်ဖို့ မလိုအပ်ဘူး ဆိုတာကို

China doesn't have to be at the center of the world.

ကျွန်မကို ဘယ်တုန်းကမှ မတွေးမိခဲ့ဘူး။

A map actually carries somebody's view.

တကယ်တော့ မြေပုံဆိုတာ တစ်ဦးဦးရဲ့ အယူအဆနဲ့ပါ။

Comparative reading actually is nothing new.

နှိုင်းယှဉ်ချင့်ချိန်လျက် စာဖတ်ခြင်းဟာ တကယ်တော့ ဘာမှမဆန်းပါဘူး။

It's a standard practice in the academic world.

သိပ္ပံပညာရှင်များရဲ့ လောကထဲမှာ ပုံမှန် လုပ်ရိုးလုပ်စဉ်ပါ။

There are even research fields

ဘာသာရေး နှိုင်းယှဉ်ရေး၊ ပြီးတော့ စာပေ နှိုင်းယှဉ်ရေး စသဖြင့်

such as comparative religion and comparative literature.

သုတေသန နယ်ပယ်တွေတောင် ရှိတယ်။

Compare and contrast gives scholars

နှိုင်းယှဉ်ကြည့်ခြင်း နဲ့ တိုက်ဆိုင်ကြည့်ခြင်းဖြင့် ပညာရှင်တွေဟာ

a more complete understanding of a topic.

အကြောင်းအရာတစ်ခုကို ပိုပြီးပြည့်စုံစွာ နားလည်လာနိုင်ကြတယ်။

So I thought, well, if comparative reading

ဒါကြောင့်မို့လို့ နှိုင်းယှဉ်ဖတ်ခြင်းက သုတေသနအတွက် အကျိုးရှိတယ် ဆိုရင်

works for research, why not do it in daily life too?

နေ့စဉ်နေ့တိုင်း ဘဝအတွက်ကော အကျိုးရှိနိုင်၊ မရှိနိုင် စဉ်းစားမိတယ်။

So I started reading books in pairs.

အဲဒါနဲ့ ကျွန်မဟာ စာအုပ် ၂ အုပ်ကို ယှဉ်ဖတ်မှုကို စတင်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။

So they can be about people --

လူပုဂ္ဂိုလ်တွေအကြောင်း

["Benjamin Franklin" by Walter Isaacson]["John Adams" by David McCullough] --

စာအုပ်တွေ ဖြစ်နိုင်ပါတယ်။

who are involved in the same event,

အခြေအနေ တစ်မျိုးတည်းမှာ ပါဝင်ခဲ့ကြသူတွေ

or friends with shared experiences.

သို့မဟုတ် အတွေ့အကြုံတူကြတဲ့

I also compare the same stories in different genres -- (Laughter)

For example, both the Christ and the Buddha

went through three temptations.

For the Christ, the temptations

are economic, political and spiritual.

စီးပွားရေး၊ နိုင်ငံရေး၊ နဲ့ ဝိညာဉ်ပိုင်းနဲ့ သက်ဆိုင်ကြပါတယ်။

For the Buddha, they are all psychological:

ဗုဒ္ဓအတွက် ကျတော့ ဖြားယောင်းမှုတွေ အားလုံးဟာ စိတ်ပိုင်းနဲ့ ဆိုင်ကြပါတယ်-

lust, fear and social duty -- interesting.

တပ်မက်ခြင်း၊ ကြောက်ရွံ့ခြင်း၊ နဲ့ ကျင့်ဝတ်များ -- စိတ်ဝင်းစားစရာပဲ။

So if you know a foreign language, it's also fun

တကယ်လို့ တခြားဘာသာစကားကို သိတယ်ဆိုရင်လည်း

to read your favorite books in two languages.

အကြိုက်ဆုံး စာအုပ်တွေကို ဘာသာစကား ၂မျိုးဖြင့်

ဖတ်ကြည့်ရတာ ပျော်ရွှင်စရာ ကောင်းပါလိမ့်မယ်။

Instead of lost in translation, I found there is much to gain.

ဘာသာပြန်မို့လို့ ဆုံးရှုံးမှုတွေ ရှိတာမှန်ပေမဲ့ ရယူနိုင်တာ အများကြီးရှိတာကိုလည်း ကျွန်မတို့ တွေ့ရပါတယ်။

For example, it's through translation that I realized

ဥပမာ ဘာသာပြန်မှုမှတဆင့် ကျွန်မ သိနားလည်လာခဲ့တာက တရုတ်လို "ပျော်ရွှင်ခြင်း" ဆိုတဲ့ စကားလုံးကို

"happiness" in Chinese literally means "fast joy." Huh!

ပင်ကိုယ် အဓိပ္ပာယ်ရင်းအတိုင်း ဆိုရင် "မြန်တဲ့ ဝမ်းမြောက်ခြင်း" လို့ ဖြစ်နေတယ်။ ဟာ့။

"Bride" in Chinese literally means "new mother." Uh-oh.

တရုတ်လို "သတို့သမီး"ဟာ အဓိပ္ပာယ်ရင်းအတိုင်း ဆိုရင် "အမေအသစ်" တဲ့။ အို့အို...

Books have given me a magic portal to connect with people

စာအုပ်တွေဟာ ကျွန်မအတွက် အတိတ်ခေတ်များတုန်းက နဲ့ ပစ္စုပန်ခေတ်ထဲက လူတွေကို

of the past and the present.

ဆယ်သွက်ပေးတဲ့ မုခ်ဝကြီးပါပဲ။

I know I shall never feel lonely or powerless again.

ကျွန်မဟာ တစ်ယောက်တည်းဖြစ်နေပါကလား (သို့) အားအင်တွေ မရှိတော့ပါကလား ခံစားရမှာ မဟုတ်တာကို ကျွန်မသိပါတယ်။

Having a dream shattered really is nothing

compared to what many others have suffered.

I have come to believe that coming true

တကယ်မှာတော့ အိပ်မက်တိုင်းဆီမှာ ဖြစ်လာရမယ်ဆိုတဲ့ ရည်ရွယ်ချက်

is not the only purpose of a dream.

ပါလာလေ့ မရှိတတ်တာကို ကျွန်မ အခု ယုံကြည်လာပါပြီ

Its most important purpose is to get us in touch

အိပ်မက်ရဲ့ အဓိက ရည်ရွယ်ချက်က ကျွန်မတို့ကို

with where dreams come from,

အိပ်မက်တေရဲ့၊ ခံစားစိတ်တွေရဲ့၊ ပြီးတော့ စိတ်ချမ်းသာမှုတွေရဲ့

where passion comes from, where happiness comes from.

ရင်းမြစ်နေရာနဲ့ ထိတွေ့ဆက်စပ်လျက် ရှိနေရန်ပဲ ဖြစ်ပါတယ်။

Even a shattered dream can do that for you.

ကြွေမွ ပျက်ပြုန်းသွားတဲ့ အိပ်မက်ကတောင် အဲဒါကို လုပ်ပေးနိုင်ပါတယ်။

So because of books, I'm here today,

ဒီတော့ စာအုပ်တွေရဲ့ ကျေးဇူးကြောင့်မို့လို့ ဒီနေ့ ကျွန်မ ဒီမှာရပ်နေတယ်။

happy, living again with a purpose and a clarity,

အချိန်အများစုမှာ စိတ်ချမ်းသာစွာဖြင့် ရည်ရွယ်ချက်ဖြင့်

most of the time.

ရှင်းလင်းပြတ်သားတဲ့ အမြင်ဖြင့် ပြန်ပြီး အသက်ရှင် ရပ်တည်နေပါတယ်။

So may books be always with you.

စာအုပ်များ သင်တို့နှင့် အစဉ်ပဲ ရှိပါစေသတည်း။
