So I was trained to become a gymnast

ڕاهێنانم پێ کراوە بۆ ئەوەى ببم بە یاریزانى جمناستیک

for two years in Hunan, China in the 1970s.

بۆ دوو ساڵ لە هونان، چین لە ١٩٧٠.

When I was in the first grade, the government

کاتێک لە پۆلى یەک بووم، حکومەت

wanted to transfer me to a school for athletes,

دەیویست بم گوازێتەوە بۆ قوتابخانەى وەرزشوانان،

all expenses paid.

هەموو خەرجیەکانى دابین کرد.

But my tiger mother said, "No."

".بەڵام دایکە دڕندەکەم گوتی، "نەخێر

My parents wanted me to become

خێزانەکەم دەیان ویست وەک ئەوان

an engineer like them.

ببم بە ئەندازیار.

After surviving the Cultural Revolution,

دواى ڕزگاربوون لە شۆڕشى ڕۆشنبیرى،

they firmly believed there's only one sure way to happiness:

ئەوان بەتەواوى بڕوایان وابوو یەک ڕێگە بۆ بەختەوەرى هەیە:

a safe and well-paid job.

سەلامەتى و وەرگرتنى پارەیەکى باش لە کاردا.

It is not important if I like the job or not.

هیچ گرینگ نیە حەزم لە کارەکە بێت یان نا.

But my dream was to become a Chinese opera singer.

بەڵام خەونى من ئەوە بوو ببم بە گۆرانیبێژێکى ئۆپیڕای چینی.

That is me playing my imaginary piano.

ئەوە منم پیانۆیە خەیاڵیەکەم دەژەنم.

An opera singer must start training young

گۆرانیبێژى ئۆپیڕا لە منداڵیەوە ڕاهێنان دەکات

to learn acrobatics,

بۆ ئەوەى فێرى تەنافبازى ببێت،

so I tried everything I could to go to opera school.

هەموو هەوڵێکم دا تا توانیم پەیوەندی بە فێرگەی ئۆپیڕا بکەم.

I even wrote to the school principal

تەنانەت نامەم بۆ بەڕێوەبەرى فێرگەکەشم نووسی.

and the host of a radio show.

هەروەها بۆ کۆمەڵێک پێشکەشکاری بەرنامەى ڕادیۆیى.

But no adults liked the idea.

بەڵام خوێنەری نامەکانم حەزیان لەم بیرۆکەیە نەبوو.

No adults believed I was serious.

گەورەکان بڕوایان نەدەکرد کە من ڕژدم.

Only my friends supported me, but they were kids,

تەنها هاوڕێکانم پشتگیریان دەکردم، بەڵام ئەوان منداڵ بوون،

just as powerless as I was.

هەر وەک خۆم، شتێکی ئەوتۆیان پێنەدەکرا.

So at age 15, I knew I was too old to be trained.

لە تەمەنى پازدە ساڵیدا، زانیم کەوا زۆر گەورەترم لەوەی ڕاهێنانم پێ بکرێت.

My dream would never come true.

خەونەکەم هەرگیز نایەتەدى.

I was afraid that for the rest of my life

بێتاقەت بووم و دەترسام کە بۆ هەمیشە

some second-class happiness

دڵخۆشی ڕاستەقینەم لە دەست چوو و دەبێت بە

would be the best I could hope for.

بە دوای دڵخۆشی کەمتر وێڵ بم.

But that's so unfair.

بەڵام ئەمە زۆر ستەمکارانەییە.

So I was determined to find another calling.

سوڕبوم لەسەر دۆزینەوەى ڕێگەیەکیتر

Nobody around to teach me? Fine.

لە دەوروبەرم کەسێک نەبوو فێرم بکات؟ باشە.

I turned to books.

ڕووم لە کتێبەکان کرد.

I satisfied my hunger for parental advice

کەلێنی حەزی ئامۆژگاری باوکانەم

from this book by a family of writers and musicians.["Correspondence in the Family of Fou Lei"]

بەم کتێبە پڕکردەوە. ئاڵوگۆڕی نامەی خێزانی فوو لیو.

I found my role model of an independent woman

ڕۆڵى خۆم وەک نموونەی ژنێکى سەربەخۆ دۆزیەوە

when Confucian tradition requires obedience.["Jane Eyre"]

کاتێک کە دابونەریتى کۆنفیوشەس داواى ["گوێڕایەڵى دەکات. ["جان ئێیرى

And I learned to be efficient from this book.["Cheaper by the Dozen"]

And I was inspired to study abroad after reading these.

خوێندنەوەى ئەم کتێبانە هانیاندام بۆ ئەوەى لە دەرەوەى وڵات بخوێنم.

I came to the U.S. in 1995,

لە ساڵى ١٩٩٥ هاتم بۆ ئەمریکا،

so which books did I read here first?

یەکەم کتێب کە لێرە خوێندمەوە، چی بوو؟

Books banned in China, of course.

ئەو کتێبانە بوون کە لە چین یاساغ کرابوون.

"The Good Earth" is about Chinese peasant life.

"زەوى باش" دەربارەى ژیانى جوتیارانى چینە.

That's just not convenient for propaganda. Got it.

هیچ کاتێک بۆ پڕوپاگەندە شیاو نیە.

The Bible is interesting, but strange.

ئینجیل سەرنج ڕاکێشە، بەڵام سەیرە.

That's a topic for a different day.

ئەمە ڕۆژێکیتر قسەی لەسەر دەکەین.

But the fifth commandment gave me an epiphany:

بەڵام ڕاسپاردەى پێنجەم سروشێکی زۆری پێبەخشیم:

"You shall honor your father and mother."

".تۆ دەبێت ڕێز لە دایک و باوکت بگرى"

"Honor," I said. "That's so different,

ڕێزگرتن،" من وام گوت. "ئەمە زۆر جیاوازە"،

and better, than obey."

"هەروەها باشترە، لە گوێڕایەڵى.

So it becomes my tool to climb out

ئەمە دەبێتە ئامرازێک بۆ سەرکەوتنم بە سەر

of this Confucian guilt trap

ئەم باوەڕە هەڵەیەی کە تێیدا گیرم خواردووە

and to restart my relationship with my parents.

بۆ دەستپێکردنەوەى پەیوەندیەکانم لەگەڵ دایک و باوکم.

Encountering a new culture also started my habit

پەنجە نەرم کردن لەگەڵ کلتورێکى نوێ، حەزی

of comparative reading.

خوێندنەوەی بەراوردکاری لە ناخم ورژاند.

It offers many insights.

ڕەهەندیتر دەخاتە ڕوو.

For example, I found this map out of place at first

بۆ نموونە، هەر لە سەرەتاوە زانیم کە ئەم نەخشەیە گونجاو نیە

because this is what Chinese students grew up with.

چونکە ئەمە ئەو نەخشەیە کە خوێندکارانى چین پێی ئاشنان.

It had never occurred to me,

هەرگیز بە خەیاڵمدا نەهاتبوو،

China doesn't have to be at the center of the world.

کە چین لە ناوەڕاستى جیهان نیە.

A map actually carries somebody's view.

لە ڕاستیدا نەخشەکە تێڕوانینى کەسێکى گەیاندووە.

Comparative reading actually is nothing new.

خوێندنەوەی بەراوردکاری شتێکى نوێ نیە.

It's a standard practice in the academic world.

ئەمە ڕاهێنانێکى پێوانەیە لە جیهانى ئەکادیمیەکان.

There are even research fields

تەنانەت لەبوارەکانى توێژینەوە

such as comparative religion and comparative literature.

وەک بەراورد کردنى ئاین و ئەدەب بەکاردێت.

Compare and contrast gives scholars

بەراورد و جیاوازیەکان یارمەتی توێژەرەکان دەدەن

a more complete understanding of a topic.

ڕوونتر لە بابەتەکان تێبگەن.

So I thought, well, if comparative reading

بیرم کردەوە، ئەگەر ڕێژەى خوێندنەوە

works for research, why not do it in daily life too?

کار بکاتە سەر توێژینەوە، بۆچى لە ژیانى ڕۆژانەمدا سودی لێنەبینم؟!

So I started reading books in pairs.

دەستم بەخوێندنەوەى دوو کتێب لە یەک کاتدا.

So they can be about people --

دەربارەى مرۆڤ بوون

["Benjamin Franklin" by Walter Isaacson]["John Adams" by David McCullough] --

[بێنجەمین فرانکڵین لە لایەن واڵتەر سکۆتەوە نووسراوە] [جۆن ئادەم کە لە لایەن دەیڤید ماکلۆو نووسراوە]

who are involved in the same event,

کە لە هەمان ڕووداو بەشداربووین،

or friends with shared experiences.

یان دوو هاوڕی کە بەسەرهاتیان لێک نزیکە.

["Personal History" by Katharine Graham]["The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life," by Alice Schroeder]

[مێژووی کەسیی لە لایەن کاترین گراهەمە نووسراوە] [تۆپەڵی بەفرین و ژیانی سەرمایەداری لە لایەن ئالیس شرویدر نووسراوە]

I also compare the same stories in different genres -- (Laughter)

هەروەها هەمان چیڕۆکم لە دوو ژانرای جیاواز بەراورد کرد.(پێکەنین).

or similar stories from different cultures,

as Joseph Campbell did in his wonderful book.["The Power of Myth" by Joseph Campbell]

وەک چۆن جۆسیف کامپبیل لە کتێبە نایابەکەى بەکاری هێناوە.

For example, both the Christ and the Buddha

بۆ نموونە، مەسیح و بوودا هەردووکیان

went through three temptations.

بە سێ ڕێگە فریودران.

For the Christ, the temptations

بۆ مەسیح، شتە فریودراوەکان

are economic, political and spiritual.

ئابورى، سیاسى و ڕوحین.

For the Buddha, they are all psychological:

بەڵام بۆ بوودا، هەمووی دەروونى بوو:

lust, fear and social duty -- interesting.

سێکس، ترس وئەرکى کۆمەڵایەتیە. جیاوازیەکی بەرچاوە.

So if you know a foreign language, it's also fun

هەروەها ئەگەر زمانێکى بێگانە بزانیت، زۆر خۆشە کە دەتوانیت

to read your favorite books in two languages.

کتێبەکان بە دوو زمان بخوێنیتەوە.

Instead of lost in translation, I found there is much to gain.

لە جێگایی لە وەرگێڕاندا سەرم لێبشێوێت زۆر شتی تازە فێربووم.

For example, it's through translation that I realized

بۆنموونە، بەهۆى وەرگێڕانەوە بوو کە تێگەیشتم

"happiness" in Chinese literally means "fast joy." Huh!

بەختەوەریی" لە زمانی چینیدا بە مانایی" خۆشى خێرا دێت " هوه"!

"Bride" in Chinese literally means "new mother." Uh-oh.

بووک " لە زمانی چینیدا بە مانایی" دایکى نوێ دێت " ئۆه - ئۆه".

Books have given me a magic portal to connect with people

کتێبەکان دەرگایەکى ئەفسوناویان پێدام بۆ پەیوەندیکردن بە خەڵک

of the past and the present.

لە ڕابردوو و ئێستاش.

I know I shall never feel lonely or powerless again.

دەزانم دەبێت هەرگیز جارێکىیتر هەست بە تەنیایى و بێهێزى نەکەم.

Having a dream shattered really is nothing

هەبوونى خەونێکى تێکشکاو لە ڕاستیدا هیچ نییە

compared to what many others have suffered.

بەراورد بەوەى ئەوانى تر چیان چێشتووە.

I have come to believe that coming true

گەیشتمە ئەم بڕوایەى کە بەدیهێنان

is not the only purpose of a dream.

تاکە ئامانجی خەون نیە.

Its most important purpose is to get us in touch

گرینگترین مەبەست ئەوەیە بمانگەیەنێت بەم خاڵەی کە بزانین

with where dreams come from,

خەونەکان لە کوێوە سەرچاوە دەگرن،

where passion comes from, where happiness comes from.

هەستەکان لەکوێوە دێت، بەختەوەرى لە کوێوە سەرچاوە دەگرێت.

Even a shattered dream can do that for you.

تەنانەت خەونە تێکشکاوەکانت دەتوانن ئەمەت بۆ بکەن.

So because of books, I'm here today,

بەهۆى کتێبەکانەوەیە، ئەمڕۆ من لێرەم،

happy, living again with a purpose and a clarity,

دڵخۆش بە دووبارە ژیانەوە لەگەڵ ،ئامانجێکى ڕوون

most of the time.

لە زۆربەی کاتەکان.

So may books be always with you.

لەوانەیە کتێبەکان هەمیشە لەگەڵت بن.
