So I was trained to become a gymnast

It is not important if I like the job or not.

An opera singer must start training young

so I tried everything I could to go to opera school.

So I was determined to find another calling.

I turned to books.

I satisfied my hunger for parental advice

I found my role model of an independent woman

கண்புசியஸ் மரபு அடிபணிதலை வேண்டிய பொழுது, ஜேன் எயரின்

when Confucian tradition requires obedience.["Jane Eyre"]

நூல்களில் ஒரு சுதந்திரப்பெண்ணின் முன்மாதிரியய்காண்டேன்.

And I learned to be efficient from this book.["Cheaper by the Dozen"]

"Cheaper by the Dozen" என்கிற நூலிலிருந்து திறமான பெண்ணாக இருப்பதற்குக் கற்றுக்கொண்டேன்.

And I was inspired to study abroad after reading these.

"Complete Works of Sanmao" மற்றும் "Lessons from History" என்ற நூல்களைப் படித்ததும் வெளிநாட்டில் கல்வி பயிலவேண்டும்

["Complete Works of Sanmao" (aka Echo Chan)] ["Lessons From History" by Nan Huaijin]

என்ற உந்துதல் வந்தது.

I came to the U.S. in 1995,

1995ல் நான் அமெரிக்கா வந்தேன்.

so which books did I read here first?

இங்கு நான் படித்த முதல் புத்தகம் என்ன தெரியுமா?

Books banned in China, of course.

நிச்சயமாக, சீனாவில் தடை செய்யப்பட்ட புத்தகங்கள் தான்.

"The Good Earth" is about Chinese peasant life.

"The Good Earth" என்பது சீன உழவர்களின் வாழ்க்கையைப் பற்றிய புத்தகம்.

That's just not convenient for propaganda. Got it.

அது சீனாவில் பிரசூரிக்க ஏற்றதல்ல. புரிந்ததா ?

The Bible is interesting, but strange.

பைபிள் சுவாரஸ்யமானது, ஆனால் விந்தையானது.

That's a topic for a different day.

But the fifth commandment gave me an epiphany:

of comparative reading.

It offers many insights.

இது பல உள்நோக்கை வழங்குகிறது.

For example, I found this map out of place at first

because this is what Chinese students grew up with.

It had never occurred to me,

China doesn't have to be at the center of the world.

A map actually carries somebody's view.

Comparative reading actually is nothing new.

ஒப்பீட்டு வாசிப்பு, உண்மையில் புதிதல்ல.

It's a standard practice in the academic world.

இது கல்வி உலகில் ஒரு அளவுகோலாக இருந்து வருகிறது.

There are even research fields

ஒப்பீட்டு சமயம் மற்றும் ஒப்பீட்டு இலக்கியம் போன்ற

such as comparative religion and comparative literature.

ஆராய்ச்சித் துறைகள் கூட உள்ளன.

Compare and contrast gives scholars

ஒப்பீட்டும் பகுத்தறிதலும் அறிஞர்களுக்கு,

a more complete understanding of a topic.

ஒரு தலைப்பை முழுமையாகப் புரிய வைக்கிறது.

So I thought, well, if comparative reading

ஒப்பபிட்டு வாசிப்பது ஆராய்ச்சிக்கு உதவி செய்யுமெனில்

works for research, why not do it in daily life too?

ஏன் நிகழ் வாழ்க்கையில பயன்படுத்தக் கூடாதென நினைத்தேன்?

So I started reading books in pairs.

So they can be about people --

Instead of lost in translation, I found there is much to gain.

மொழிபெயர்ப்பில் தொலைந்து போகாமல் அதிகமாகப் பலன் பெறுவதையே உணர்ந்தேன்.

For example, it's through translation that I realized

ஒரு எடுத்து காட்டு, மொழிபெயர்ப்பு மூலமா தான்

"happiness" in Chinese literally means "fast joy." Huh!

"மகிழ்ச்சி" ங்கற வார்த்தைக்கு "வேகமான மகிழ்வு" னு அர்த்தம்ங்க்ரத உணர்ந்தேன்.

"Bride" in Chinese literally means "new mother." Uh-oh.

அதாவது "மணமகள்" ங்கற வார்த்தைக்கு சீன மொழில "புது அம்மா" னு .!

Books have given me a magic portal to connect with people

புத்தகங்கள் எனக்கு கடந்த கால மற்றும் தற்போதைய மக்கள்

of the past and the present.

இணைக்க ஒரு மாய வாயிலை கொடுத்துள்ளனர்.

I know I shall never feel lonely or powerless again.

எனக்கு தெரியும் நான் மீண்டும் தனிமை அல்லது வலிமையிழந்து உணரமாட்டேன் என்று.

Having a dream shattered really is nothing

சிதைந்து ஒரு கனவு கொண்ட என்னை

compared to what many others have suffered.

பாதிக்கப்பட்ட மற்றவருடன் ஒப்பிடும் போது அது ஒன்றும் இல்லை என்று தோன்றியது.

I have come to believe that coming true

நான் இப்பொழுது நம்புகிறேன் உண்மையாக வருவது மட்டுமே

is not the only purpose of a dream.

கனவு காண்பதின் உண்மையான நோக்கம் அல்ல என்று.

Its most important purpose is to get us in touch

அதன் முக்கிய நோக்கம், நம்மை;கனவுகள் எங்கிருந்து வருகின்றன;

with where dreams come from,

உணர்ச்சி எங்கிருந்து வருகின்றன

where passion comes from, where happiness comes from.

மகிழ்ச்சி எங்கிருந்து வருகின்றன இவற்றுடன் தொடர்புபடுத்தி கொள்வதற்காக.

Even a shattered dream can do that for you.

ஒரு உடைந்த கனவு கூட அதை உங்களுக்கு செய்ய முடியும்.

So because of books, I'm here today,

அதனால புத்தகங்களால நான் இங்க இருக்கிறேன்,

happy, living again with a purpose and a clarity,

மகிழ்ச்சியாக, மீண்டும் வாழ்கிறேன் ஒரு தெளிவோடும் நோக்கத்தோடும்,

most of the time.

பல நேரங்களில்.

So may books be always with you.

எனவே, புத்தகங்கள் எப்பொழுதும் உங்களுடன் இருக்கட்டும்.
