So I was trained to become a gymnast

ڕاهێنانم دەکرد کە ببمە جومناستیک

for two years in Hunan, China in the 1970s.

بۆ ماوەی دوو ساڵ لە هوما، چین لە ١٩٧٠کان.

When I was in the first grade, the government

ئەوکاتەی قۆناغی یەک بووم، حوکموت

wanted to transfer me to a school for athletes,

ویستی بمگوازێتەوە بۆ قوتابخانەی وەرزشی،

all expenses paid.

بە پارەیەکی زۆر.

But my tiger mother said, "No."

بەڵام دایکم گوتی،” نەخێر“.

My parents wanted me to become

دایک و باوکم دەیانویست ببمە

an engineer like them.

ئەندازیار وەک خۆیان.

After surviving the Cultural Revolution,

دوای ڕزگاربوون لە شۆڕشی کەلتوری،

they firmly believed there's only one sure way to happiness:

باوەڕیان وابوو تەنها یەک هۆکار هەیە بۆ بەختەوەری:

a safe and well-paid job.

کارێکی سەلامەت کە داهاتێکی باشی هەبێ.

It is not important if I like the job or not.

گرنگ نییە حەزت بەکارەکەتە یان نا.

But my dream was to become a Chinese opera singer.

بەڵام من خەونم ئەوبوو ببمە گۆرانی بێزێکی چینی ئۆپێرا.

That is me playing my imaginary piano.

پیانۆ ژەنین هەموو خەیاڵی من بوو.

گۆرانی بێژی ئۆپێرا دەبوایە لە گەنجیەوە دەست بە ڕاهێنان بکا

An opera singer must start training young

to learn acrobatics,

تا فێری وەرزشەکە ببم،

so I tried everything I could to go to opera school.

من هەموو ڕۆژێ هەوڵم دەدا دەڕۆیشتمە قوتانخانەی ئۆپێرا.

I even wrote to the school principal

تەنانەت بۆ بەڕێوبەری قوتابخانەکەشم نووسی

and the host of a radio show.

و پێشکەشکاری بەرنامە ڕادیۆیەکەش

But no adults liked the idea.

بەڵام هیچیان حەزیان بە بیرۆکەکە نەبوو.

No adults believed I was serious.

پێیان وا نەبوو کە من بە جدیمە.

Only my friends supported me, but they were kids,

تەنها هاوڕێکانم پشتیوانم بوون، بەڵام ئەوان منداڵ بوون،

just as powerless as I was.

زۆر بێدەسەڵات بووم.

So at age 15, I knew I was too old to be trained.

لە تەمەنی ١٥ ساڵی، زانیم کە زۆر بچوکم تا ڕاهێنان بکەم .

My dream would never come true.

خەونەکەم هەرگیز نابێتە ڕاستی.

I was afraid that for the rest of my life

بەداخەوە بووم بۆ تەواوی ژیانم

some second-class happiness

بەشێوەیەک قۆناغی دوومم دڵخۆش کەر بوو

would be the best I could hope for.

باشتر دەبێت ئەگەر بە ئومێد بم بۆی.

But that's so unfair.

بەڵام زۆر نادادپەروەری هەبوو.

So I was determined to find another calling.

سووربوم لەسەر ئەوەی ڕێگایەکی تر بدۆزمەوە.

Nobody around to teach me? Fine.

کەس نییە فێرم بکات؟ کێشە نییە.

I turned to books.

ڕووم کردە کتێب.

I satisfied my hunger for parental advice

مانم لە خواردن گرت تا دایک و باوکمم ڕازی کرد

from this book by a family of writers and musicians.["Correspondence in the Family of Fou Lei"]

لەم کتێبە لە لایەن خێزانێکی نووسەرو میوزشن [“Correspondence in the Family of Fou Lei]

I found my role model of an independent woman

خۆم لە وێنای ژنێکی پشتبەخۆ بەستوو بینیەوە

when Confucian tradition requires obedience.["Jane Eyre"]

کە نەریتە ئاینیەکانیش پێویستیان بە جێبەجێکردن ھەیە.[“Jane Eyre”]

And I learned to be efficient from this book.["Cheaper by the Dozen"]

لەم کتێبەوە فێری ڕێکخستن بووم. [“Cheaper by the Dozen”]

And I was inspired to study abroad after reading these.

دوای خوێندنەوەی ئەم کتێبە حەزم دەکرد بچمە دەرەوەی وڵات.

I came to the U.S. in 1995,

ھاتمە ئەمریکا لە ١٩٩٥،

so which books did I read here first?

لێرە چ کتێبێکم خوێندمەوە یەکەم جار؟

Books banned in China, of course.

بەدڵنیایەوە، کتێبەکان قەدەغەکراون لە چیین.

"The Good Earth" is about Chinese peasant life.

“The Good Earth” دەربارەی ژیانی جوتیارانی چینییە.

That's just not convenient for propaganda. Got it.

تێگەیشتم. ئەمەش باسوخواسێکی گونجاو نییە.

The Bible is interesting, but strange.

ئینجل کتێبێکی سەرنجڕاکێشە، بەڵام نامۆیە.

(Laughter)

That's a topic for a different day.

ئەو بابەتە بۆ ڕۆژێکی تر.

But the fifth commandment gave me an epiphany:

بەڵام ئەرکی پێنجەم منی هۆشیار کردەوە:

"You shall honor your father and mother."

“دەبێت شانازی بە دایک و باوکتەوە بکەین”

"Honor," I said. "That's so different,

گوتم،“شانازیکردن“، زۆر جیاواز،

and better, than obey."

و سەختترە، لە گوێڕایەڵی کردن.”

So it becomes my tool to climb out

کەواتە ئەوە دەبێتە ئامرازێک بۆ سەرکەوتنم

of this Confucian guilt trap

بەسەر ئەو بیڕوباوەڕە گوناحەدا

and to restart my relationship with my parents.

دەستم بە پەیوەندیەکی نوێ کرد لەگەڵ دایک و باوکم.

Encountering a new culture also started my habit

ڕووبەڕوبونەوەی کەلتورێکی نوێ و دەستم کردن بە

of comparative reading.

خوێندنەوەیەکی وورد.

It offers many insights.

کە پێویستی بە وردەکاریەکی زۆر بوو.

For example, I found this map out of place at first

بۆ نموونە، ئەو شوێنەم لەسەر نەخشە دۆزیەوە سەرەتا

because this is what Chinese students grew up with.

لەبەرئەوەی خوێندکاتی چینی لەسەر ئەوە ڕاهاتبوون.

It had never occurred to me,

ئەوە قەت بۆ من ڕووی نەدابوو،

China doesn't have to be at the center of the world.

چین پێویست ناکا لە ناوەڕاستی جیهان بێت.

A map actually carries somebody's view.

نەخشە تێڕوانینی کەسەکان دەخوێنێتەوە.

Comparative reading actually is nothing new.

خوێندنەوە ئەرکێکی وورد شتێکی نوێ نییە.

It's a standard practice in the academic world.

ڕاهێنانێکی ستانداردە لە جیهاندا.

There are even research fields

تەنانەت توێژینەوەشی لەسەرە

such as comparative religion and comparative literature.

وەک توێژینەوەی ئاینی و ئەدەبی.

توێژەرەکان جیاوازی و دژەکان دەخەنە ڕوو

Compare and contrast gives scholars

لەگەڵ تێگەیشتنێکی تەواوی بابەتەکە.

بۆیە بیرمکردەوە، باشە، ئەگەر خوێندنەوەیەکی وورد

a more complete understanding of a topic.

So I thought, well, if comparative reading

بۆخاتری توێژینەوە بکرێ، بۆچی بۆژیانی ڕۆژانەی خۆمانی نەیکەین؟

works for research, why not do it in daily life too?

بۆیە دەستم بە خوێندنەوەی دوو کتێب،

So I started reading books in pairs.

کەواتە دەکرێ لەبارەی خەڵکەوە بێ--

“Benjamin Franklin” by Walter Isaacson] [“John Adams لەلایەن دەیڤد موکڵۆڤ]--

So they can be about people --

["Benjamin Franklin" by Walter Isaacson]["John Adams" by David McCullough] --

who are involved in the same event,

or friends with shared experiences.

کە ڕووبەڕووی هەمان بارودۆخ ببووەوە،

یان هاوەڕێکان کە ئەزمونی خۆیان باس دەکرد.

["Personal History" by Katharine Graham]["The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life," by Alice Schroeder]

I also compare the same stories in different genres -- (Laughter)

هەروەها خوێندنەوەی هەنێ بابەت لەسەر جیاوازی ڕەگەز-- ( پێکەنین)

or similar stories from different cultures,

For example, both the Christ and the Buddha

بۆ نموونە، مەسیح و بوودا

went through three temptations.

سێ جار هەڵخەڵەتێنران.

For the Christ, the temptations

ئەو فێڵانەی کە لە مەسیح کرا،

are economic, political and spiritual.

ئابووری، سیاسی و ڕوحی بوون.

For the Buddha, they are all psychological:

سەبارەت بە بووداش، هەمووی دەروونی بوو:

lust, fear and social duty -- interesting.

چڵێسی، ترس و ئەرکی کۆمەلایەتی-- نایابە.

So if you know a foreign language, it's also fun

ئەگەر زمانی بیانی دەزانی، هەستێکی خۆشە

to read your favorite books in two languages.

بۆ خوێندنەوەی ئەو کتێبەی حەزت لێیە بە دوو زمان.

Instead of lost in translation, I found there is much to gain.

لە جیاتی ئەوەی وەڕگێڕان وەلابنرێ، زانیم کە دەستکەوتی زۆرە.

For example, it's through translation that I realized

بۆ نموونە، بەهۆت وەڕگێڕانەوە زانیم کە

"happiness" in Chinese literally means "fast joy." Huh!

“دڵخۆشی” بە مانای چێژوەرگرتنی خێرایە لە چین“.ههه!

"Bride" in Chinese literally means "new mother." Uh-oh.

“بووک” لە چین مانای دایکی نوێە، ئۆوو.

Books have given me a magic portal to connect with people

کتێبەکان دەروازیەکی ناوەزە بوون بۆ دروستکردنی پەیوەندی لەگەڵ خەڵک

of the past and the present.

لە ڕابردوو و داهاتووشدا.

I know I shall never feel lonely or powerless again.

دەزانم کە چیتر هەست بە بێهێزی و تەنییای ناکەم.

Having a dream shattered really is nothing

هەبوونی خەونێکی بێ بنەما لەڕاستیدا هیچ نییە

compared to what many others have suffered.

بەراورد بەوەی کە خەڵکانی تر چی دەچێژن.

I have come to believe that coming true

من هاتوومەتە سەر ئەو باوەڕەی کە هەبوونی ڕاستیەک

is not the only purpose of a dream.

تەنها ئامانج نییە بۆ خەونێک.

Its most important purpose is to get us in touch

گرنگترین مەبەست ئەوەیە کە ئێمە لەگەڵ یەکتر بین

with where dreams come from,

لەوشوێنەی کە خەونەکانمانی لێیە،

where passion comes from, where happiness comes from.

لەو شوێنەی هەستەکانمان، دڵخۆشیەکانمانی لێیە.

Even a shattered dream can do that for you.

لەوکاتەدا تەنانەت خەونە بێ بنەماکانیش دەبنە ڕاست.

So because of books, I'm here today,

بەهۆی کتێبەوە، ئەمڕۆ لێرەم،

happy, living again with a purpose and a clarity,

دڵخۆشی، دووبارە ژیانکردن لەگەڵ ڕوونی و مەبەستەکان،

most of the time.

زۆربەی کات.

So may books be always with you.

کەواتە لەوانیە کتێبەکان هەمیشە لەگەڵ تۆدا بن.
