Why do so many people reach success and then fail?

શા માટે ઘણા લોકો સફળતા મેળવે છે અને પછી નિષ્ફળ જાય છે?

One of the big reasons is, we think success is a one-way street.

ઘણા કારણોમાંનું એક મોટું કારણ છે, કે આપણે સફળતાને એક માર્ગીય રસ્તો ગણીએ છીએ.

So we do everything that leads up to success,

એટલે આપણે એ બધું જ કરીએ છીએ જે આપણને સફળતા સુધી દોરી જાય છે.

but then we get there. We figure we've made it,

પછી આપણને સફળતા મળી ગઈ એનો અંદાજ આવી જાય છે,

we sit back in our comfort zone,

અને આપણે વિશ્રામની સ્થિતિમાં આવી જઈએ છીએ.

and we actually stop doing everything that made us successful.

અને આપણે એ બધું કરવાનું બંધ કરી દઈએ છીએ જેના લીધે આપણે સફળ થયા.

And it doesn't take long to go downhill.

અને પછી પીછેહઠ થતા બહુ વાર નથી લાગતી.

And I can tell you this happens,

અને આવું થાય છે એવું હું તમને કહી શકું છું

because it happened to me.

કારણકે મારી સાથે આવું થયેલું છે.

Reaching success, I worked hard, I pushed myself.

સફળ થવા માટે, મેં ખુબ જ મહેનત કરી.

But then I stopped, because I figured, "Oh, you know, I made it.

પણ પછી હું અટકી ગયો, કેમ કે મને થયું, " ચાલો, હું સફળ થઇ ગયો,

I can just sit back and relax."

હવે હું આરામથી બેસી શકીશ"

Reaching success, I always tried to improve and do good work.

સફળ થવા માટે, મેં હમેશા પ્રગતિશીલ રહેવા અને સારું કામ કરવા પ્રયત્ન કર્યો.

But then I stopped because I figured, "Hey, I'm good enough.

પણ પછી હું અટકી ગયો કારણકે મને થયું, " ચાલો ઘણું થઇ ગયું,

I don't need to improve any more."

હવે વધારે પ્રગતિની કોઈ જરૂર નથી."

Reaching success, I was pretty good at coming up with good ideas.

સફળ થવા માટેના તબક્કામાં, હું સરસ તર્કશક્તિ ધરાવતો હતો,

Because I did all these simple things that led to ideas.

કારણકે એ બધી સામાન્ય વસ્તુઓ કરતો હતો જેને લીધે મારી તર્કશક્તિ સુધરે.

But then I stopped, because I figured I was this hot-shot guy

પણ પછી હું અટકી ગયો કેમકે મને થયું કે હવે હું સક્ષમ માણસ થઇ ગયો છે.

and I shouldn't have to work at ideas, they should just come like magic.

અને મારે હવે તર્કશક્તિ વિકસાવવાની જરૂર નથી. એની જાતે જ જાદુથી સમજણ આવી જશે.

And the only thing that came was creative block.

અને આવ્યો તો માત્ર એક સર્જનાત્મક વિરામ.

I couldn't come up with any ideas.

મને કોઈ નવા વિચારો નહોતા આવતા.

Reaching success, I always focused on clients and projects,

સફળ થવાના તબક્કામાં, હું હમેશા મારા પ્રોજેક્ટસ અને ક્લાયન્ટ્સ પ્રત્યે ધ્યાન આપતો હતો.

and ignored the money. Then all this money started pouring in.

અને નાણાને મહત્વ નહોતો આપતો. પછી હું ઘણો કમાતો થયો.

And I got distracted by it.

અને એના લીધે હું બેધ્યાન થઇ ગયો.

And suddenly I was on the phone to my stockbroker and my real estate agent,

અને અચાનક હું મારા શેરદલાલ અને રીયલ એસ્ટેટ એજન્ટ સાથે ફોન પર વધારે રહેવા લાગ્યો,

when I should have been talking to my clients.

જ્યારે મારે મારા ક્લાયન્ટ્સ સાથે વાત કરવી જોઈતી હતી.

And reaching success, I always did what I loved.

સફળ થવાના તબક્કામાં, હું હમેશા એ જ કરતો જે મને કરવું ગમતું,

But then I got into stuff that I didn't love,

પણ પછી હું એવું કરવા લાગ્યો જે મને નહોતું ગમતું,

like management. I am the world's worst manager,

જેમ કે સંચાલન. હું વિશ્વનો સૌથી ખરાબ સંચાલક છું.

but I figured I should be doing it, because I was, after all,

પણ મને થયું કે મારે એ કરવું જોઈએ, કારણકે, છેવટે તો હું,

the president of the company.

મારી કંપનીનો પ્રમુખ હતો.

Well, soon a black cloud formed over my head

અને, થોડા સમયમાં જ મારા માથે પહાડ તૂટી પડ્યું

and here I was, outwardly very successful,

અને હું થઇ ગયો, બહારથી સફળ,

but inwardly very depressed.

પણ અંદરથી દુઃખી.

But I'm a guy; I knew how to fix it.

પણ હું પુરુષ છું, અને હું જાણું છું બધું સરખું કેવી રીતે કરવું?

I bought a fast car.

મેં ઝડપી ગાડી લીધી.

(Laughter)

(હાસ્ય)

It didn't help.

પણ એનાથી કંઈ ફાયદો ન થયો,

I was faster but just as depressed.

હું ઝડપી તો હતો જ પણ એટલો જ દુઃખી હતો.

So I went to my doctor. I said, "Doc,

હું મારા ડોક્ટર પાસે ગયો અને કહ્યું, " ડોક્ટર સાહેબ,

I can buy anything I want. But I'm not happy. I'm depressed.

હું મારે જે જોઈએ એ ખરીદી શકું છું, પણ હું ખુશ નથી, દુખી છું"

It's true what they say, and I didn't believe it until it happened to me.

કોઈએ સાચું જ કહ્યું હતું, અને જ્યાં સુધી આવું મારી સાથે થયું નહોતું હું માનતો નહોતો.

But money can't buy happiness."

પણ પૈસાથી ખુશી નથી ખરીદી શકાતી."

He said, "No. But it can buy Prozac."

ડોક્ટરે કહ્યું, " ના, પણ પૈસાથી પ્રોઝેક(ડીપ્રેશનની દવા) ખરીદી શકાય છે"

And he put me on anti-depressants.

અને એમણે મને નિરાશા-રોધક દવાઓ આપી.

And yeah, the black cloud faded a little bit, but so did all the work,

અને નિરાશાનું કાળું વાદળ થોડું ઝાંખું થયું, અને ધંધો પણ.

because I was just floating along. I couldn't care less if clients ever called.

અને હું માત્ર પ્રવાહમાં વહેતો હતો એટલે ક્લાયન્ટ્સ ફોન કરે છે કે નહિ એની મને પડી ન હતી.

(Laughter)

And clients didn't call.

અને ક્લાયન્ટ્સના ફોન ન આવ્યા.

(Laughter)

(હાસ્ય)

Because they could see I was no longer serving them,

કારણકે એમને ખબર હતી કે હું એમની સેવા નહોતો કરતો,

I was only serving myself.

માત્ર મારી જ સેવા કરતો હતો.

So they took their money and their projects to others who would serve them better.

એટલે એમણે એમના પૈસા અને પ્રોજેક્ટ એમને આપ્યા જેઓ એમની મારા કરતા વધારે સારી રીતે સેવા કરતા હતા.

Well, it didn't take long for business to drop like a rock.

એટલે, ધંધાને માટલીની જેમ પડી ભાંગતા બહુ વાર ન લાગી.

My partner and I, Thom, we had to let all our employees go.

મારે અને મારા ભાગીદાર થોમે, બધા જ કાર્યકરતાઓ ને છોડવા પડ્યા.

It was down to just the two of us, and we were about to go under.

પછી માત્ર અમે બે જ રહ્યા, અને અમે પણ છોડવાની તૈયારીમાં હતા.

And that was great.

અને આ સ્થિતિ સરસ હતી,

Because with no employees, there was nobody for me to manage.

કારણકે કોઈ કર્મચારી ન હોવાને કારણે મારે સંચાલન પણ કરવા નું ન રહ્યું.

So I went back to doing the projects I loved.

એટલે હું ફરી પાછો મને ગમતા કામ કરવા લાગ્યો.

I had fun again, I worked harder and, to cut a long story short,

ફરીથી મને મજા આવવા લાગી, ફરી થી મહેનત કરવા લાગ્યો , અને ટૂંકમાં કહું તો:

did all the things that took me back up to success.

એવી બધી વસ્તુઓ કરવા લાગ્યો જેના લીધે હું પાછો સફળ થયો.

But it wasn't a quick trip.

પણ એ ઝડપી પ્રવાસ ન હતો.

It took seven years.

મને સાત વર્ષ લાગ્યા.

But in the end, business grew bigger than ever.

પણ અંતમાં, ધંધો પહેલા હતો એના કરતા પણ વધારે વિકસ્યો.

And when I went back to following these eight principles,

અને જ્યારે હું આ આઠ નિયમો પાળવા લાગ્યો,

the black cloud over my head disappeared altogether.

મારા માથેથી મુસીબતના પહાડો અચાનક ગાયબ થઇ ગયા.

And I woke up one day and I said,

અને એક દિવસ હું ઉઠ્યો અને મેં કીધું,

"I don't need Prozac anymore."

" હવે મને પ્રોઝેક(નિરાશારોધક દવા)ની સહેજપણ જરૂર નથી."

And I threw it away and haven't needed it since.

અને દવામેં ફેંકી દીધી, જેની આજ સુધી જરૂર નથી પડી.

I learned that success isn't a one-way street.

હું શીખ્યો કે સફળતા એક-માર્ગીય રસ્તો નથી.

It doesn't look like this; it really looks more like this.

એ આના જેવું નથી, એ ખરેખર આના જેવું છે.

It's a continuous journey.

એ અવિરત પ્રવાસ છે.

And if we want to avoid "success-to-failure-syndrome,"

અને જો આપણે "સફળતા થી નિષ્ફળતા રોગ" થી બચવું હોય,

we just keep following these eight principles,

તો આ આઠ નિયમોને પાળતા રહેવું જોઈએ.

because that is not only how we achieve success,

કારણ કે એ માત્ર સફળતા કેવી રીતે મળે એના નિયમો નથી,

it's how we sustain it.

પણ આપણે સફળતા કેવી રીતે જાળવી શકીએ એ પણ જણાવે છે.
