you have to get to the fire scene pretty early

to get in on any action.

I remember my first fire.

I was the second volunteer on the scene,

so there was a pretty good chance I was going to get in.

But still it was a real footrace against the other volunteers

کە ناوەڕاستی شەو بوو،

to get to the captain in charge

to find out what our assignments would be.

لەژێر چەترێک، بە جلی خەو، بە پێپەتی،

When I found the captain,

he was having a very engaging conversation

with the homeowner,

خۆبەخشەکەی تر کە پێش من هاتبوو--

who was surely having one of the worst days of her life.

با پێی بڵێین لێکس لوثەر--

Here it was, the middle of the night,

she was standing outside in the pouring rain,

یەکەمجار چووە لای کاپتنەکە

و داوای کرد بچێتە ژوورەوە

under an umbrella, in her pajamas, barefoot,

و سەگی خاوەن ماڵەکە ڕزگار بکەن.

while her house was in flames.

سەگەکە! لە حەسوودیدا شۆک بووم.

The other volunteer who had arrived just before me --

let's call him Lex Luther --

هەندێک پارێزەر یان چاودێری پارە هەن

کە بۆ تەواوی ژیانی بە خەڵک دەڵێ

(Laughter)

کە چووەتە ناو بینای ئاگر تێبەربوو

got to the captain first

بۆ ڕزگارکردنی بوونەوەرێکی زیندوو،

and was asked to go inside

تەنیا چونکە لێیدام بە پێنج چرکە.

and save the homeowner's dog.

باشە، من کەسی دواتر بووم.

The dog! I was stunned with jealousy.

کاپتن ئاماژەی بە من دا.

وتی، “بیزۆس، دەمەوێت تۆ بچیتە ناو ماڵەکە.

Here was some lawyer or money manager

who, for the rest of his life, gets to tell people

بچیتە قاتی سەرەوە، ئاگرەکە تێپەڕێنە،

that he went into a burning building

و دەمەوێت پێڵاوێک بۆ ئەم ژنە بهێنیت.”

to save a living creature,

just because he beat me by five seconds.

(پێکەنین)

Well, I was next.

سوێند دەخۆم.

The captain waved me over.

نەک بەتەواوەتی ئەوەی هیوام بۆ دەخواست، بەڵام چووم-- سەرەوەی پلیکانەکان،

He said, "Bezos, I need you to go into the house.

I need you to go upstairs, past the fire,

خوارەوەی هۆڵەکە، ئاگرکوژێنەوە ‘ڕاستەقینەکان’ تێپەڕێنە،

and I need you to get this woman a pair of shoes."

کە لەم خاڵەدا زۆربەی ئاگرەکەیان کوژاندبۆوە،

(Laughter)

بۆ ژووری نوستنی سەرکردە بۆ هێنانی جوتێک پێڵاو.

I swear.

دەزانم ئێستا بیر لە چی دەکەنەوە،

So, not exactly what I was hoping for,

بەڵام من پاڵەوان نیم.

but off I went --

up the stairs, down the hall, past the 'real' firefighters,

who were pretty much done putting out the fire at this point,

بارەکەم بردە خوارەوە

into the master bedroom to get a pair of shoes.

لەو شوێنەی دوژمنەکەم دیت

و سەگە بەنرخەکە لەلای دەرگای پێشەوە.

Now I know what you're thinking,

گەنجینەکانمان بردە دەرەوە بۆ خاوەن ماڵەکە،

but I'm no hero.

کە، هیچ چاوەڕوان نەکراو نەبوو،

(Laughter)

ئەو زیاتر گرنگی پێدرا وەک لە من.

چەند هەفتەیەک دواتر، بەشەکە

I carried my payload back downstairs

نامەیەکی پێ گەیشت لەلایەن خاوەن ماڵەکە

where I met my nemesis

سپاسی کردین بۆ ئەو هەوڵە ئازایانەی

and the precious dog by the front door.

نواندمان لە ڕزگار کردنی ماڵەکەی.

We took our treasures outside to the homeowner,

کردەوەی میهرەبانی لە هەموو ئەوانی تر بەدی کردبوو:

where, not surprisingly,

تەنانەت کەسێک جوتێک پێڵاوی بۆ هێنابوو.

his received much more attention than did mine.

A few weeks later,

لە هەردوو پیشەم لە ڕۆبن هوود

the department received a letter from the homeowner

و پیشەم وەک ئاگرکوژێنەوەیەکی خۆبەخش،

thanking us for the valiant effort displayed

شایەتحاڵم بۆ کاری بەخشندەیی و بەزەیی

in saving her home.

لە پێوەری زۆر گەورە،

The act of kindness she noted above all others:

بەڵام هەروەها شایەتحاڵی جوانی و ئازایەتیم

someone had even gotten her a pair of shoes.

لەسەر بنەمای تاکە کەسی.

و دەزانن چی فێربووم؟

(Laughter)

هەموویان گرنگن.

In both my vocation at Robin Hood

کاتێک سەیری دەورووبەرم دەکەم لەم ژوورە

and my avocation as a volunteer firefighter,

کەسانێک کە یان بەدەستیان هێناوە

I am witness to acts of generosity and kindness

یان لە ڕێگەکەیانن بۆ بەدەستهێنانی،

on a monumental scale,

ئاستی مەزن لە سەرکەوتندا،

but I'm also witness to acts of grace and courage

دەمەوێت ئەم بەبیرهاتنەوە بخەمە بەرچاو:

on an individual basis.

مەوەستە.

And you know what I've learned?

چاوەڕێ مەکە تاوەکو ملیۆنێک ئامادە دەکەیت

They all matter.

بۆ دروستکردنی گۆڕانکاری لە ژیانی کەسێک.

So as I look around this room

ئەگەر شتێکت هەیە بی بەخشیت،

at people who either have achieved,

ئێستا بی بەخشە.

or are on their way to achieving,

خواردن پێشکەش بکە لە چێشتخانەی شۆربا. پاڕکی گەڕەک پاک بکەوە.

remarkable levels of success,

ببە بە ڕێنیشاندەر.

I would offer this reminder:

هەموو ڕۆژێک هەلی ئەوەمان نابێت

don't wait.

بۆ ڕزگار کردنی ژیانی کەسێک،

Don't wait until you make your first million

بەڵام هەموو ڕۆژێک دەرفەتمان پێ دەدات کاریگەری بکەینە سەر کەسێک.

to make a difference in somebody's life.

If you have something to give,

کەواتە بڕۆ ناو یاریەکە. پێڵاوەکان بپارێزە.

give it now.

سپاس.

Serve food at a soup kitchen. Clean up a neighborhood park.

Be a mentor.

Not every day is going to offer us a chance

بڕۆنۆ گیوسانی: ماڕک، ماڕک، بگەڕێوە.

to save somebody's life,

(چەپڵە لێدان)

but every day offers us an opportunity to affect one.

So get in the game. Save the shoes.
