मलाई थाहा छ तपाईहरु के सोचिरहनुभएको छ |

You think I've lost my way,

तपाईहरु सोचिरहनुभएको छ कि मैले बाटो बिराए,

and somebody's going to come on the stage in a minute

र केहि बेरमा कोही यो स्टेजमा आउँदैछ

and guide me gently back to my seat.

र मलाई बिस्तारै मेरो सिटमा लैजानेछ |

I get that all the time in Dubai.

दुबईमा मलाई सधै नै यस्तो हुन्छ |

"Here on holiday are you, dear?"

"तपाई यहाँ छुट्टीमा आउनुभएको हगि?"

(Laughter)

"Come to visit the children?

"बच्चाहरु भेट्न आउनुभएको हो?

How long are you staying?"

कहिले सम्म बस्नुहुन्छ?"

Well actually, I hope for a while longer yet.

तर सत्य, म अझै अलि लामै समयको आशा गर्छु |

I have been living and teaching in the Gulf

म खाडी क्षेत्रमा ३० वर्ष भन्दा अघि देखि

for over 30 years.

बस्ने र पढाउने काम गरिरहेको छु |

And in that time, I have seen a lot of changes.

र त्यो समयमा, मैले धेरै परिवर्तनहरु देखेको छु |

Now that statistic

त्यो तथ्यांक

is quite shocking.

अलिक निराशाजनक छ |

And I want to talk to you today

र आज म तपाईहरु संग

about language loss

भाषाको विनाश र

and the globalization of English.

अंग्रेजीको विश्वव्यापिकरण बारे केहि भन्न गैरहेकोछु |

I want to tell you about my friend

म तपाईहरुलाई मेरो एक जना साथी को बारेमा उल्लेख गर्न चाहन्छु,

who was teaching English to adults in Abu Dhabi.

जसले आबु धाबीमा वयस्कहरुलाई अंग्रेजी पढाइरहेका थिए |

And one fine day,

अनि एक राम्रो मौसम भएको दिन पारेर

she decided to take them into the garden

उनीहरुलाई प्रकृति सम्बन्धि केहि शब्दहरु सिकाउन

to teach them some nature vocabulary.

बगैचामा लैजाने निर्णय गरिन् |

But it was she who ended up learning

तर भयो के भने उनले उल्टै

all the Arabic words for the local plants,

स्थानीय बोटबिरुवाहरुको अरेबिक नाम सिकिन् |

as well as their uses --

तिनीहरु को प्रयोग सहित --

medicinal uses, cosmetics,

औषधि, सौन्दर्य,

cooking, herbal.

पकाउने तथा जडिबुटी को रूपमा |

How did those students get all that knowledge?

ती विद्यार्थीहरुले त्यो सबै ज्ञान कहाँ बाट पाए?

Of course, from their grandparents

अवस्य पनि, उनीहरूका बाजे-बजु बाट

and even their great-grandparents.

र अझ जिजु बाजे-बजु बाट |

It's not necessary to tell you how important it is

तपाईहरुलाई यो भन्नु आवश्यक छैन कि

to be able to communicate

एक पुस्ता र अर्को पुस्ता बिचमा सम्बाद

across generations.

गर्न सक्ने क्षमता कति आवश्यक छ |

But sadly, today,

तर दुःख को कुरा, आज

languages are dying

भाषाहरु विनाश भैरहेका छन्

at an unprecedented rate.

र त्यो पनि अभूतपूर्व गतिमा |

A language dies every 14 days.

प्रत्येक १४ दिनमा एउटा भाषा को विनाश हुन्छ |

Now, at the same time,

र त्यहि समयमा,

English is the undisputed global language.

अंग्रजी चाहिँ निर्बाध विश्व भाषा भैरहेकोछ |

Could there be a connection?

के यो दुवैको को बिचमा केहि सम्बन्ध हुनसक्छ त?

Well I don't know.

खै मलाई चाहिँ थाहा छैन |

But I do know that I've seen a lot of changes.

तर मलाई के थाहा छ भने मैले धेरै परिवर्तन देखेको छु |

When I first came out to the Gulf, I came to Kuwait

जब म पहिलो पटक खाडी क्षेत्रमा आएँ, म कुबेत आएको थिए

in the days when it was still a hardship post.

त्यस्ता दिनहरुमा जब त्यो कठिन पद थियो |

Actually, not that long ago.

उति सारो पहिला पनि हैन |

That is a little bit too early.

त्यो त अलि पहिला नै हो |

But nevertheless,

तैपनि,

I was recruited by the British Council,

ब्रिटिस काउन्सिलले म लगायत

along with about 25 other teachers.

अरु २५ शिक्षकहरुलाई नियुक्ति दियो |

And we were the first non-Muslims

र हामी कुबेतको सरकारी स्कुलमा पढाउने

to teach in the state schools there in Kuwait.

पहिलो गैर-मुसलमान भयौं |

We were brought to teach English

हामीहरु अंग्रेजी पढाउन ल्याईएका थियौं

because the government wanted to modernize the country

किनकि सरकार देशलाई आधुनिकरण गर्न

and to empower the citizens through education.

र आफ्ना नागरिकलाई शिक्षा द्वारा सुदृढ गराउन चाहन्थ्यो |

And of course, the U.K. benefited

र अवस्य पनि बेलायतलाई फाइदा थियो

from some of that lovely oil wealth.

त्यो आकर्षक तेल को सम्पति बाट |

Okay.

ल त्यसो भए |

Now this is the major change that I've seen --

अब यो चाहिँ मैले देखेको मुख्य परिवर्तन हो --

how teaching English

कसरी अंग्रेजी को पढाई

has morphed

परस्पर फाइदा को

from being a mutually beneficial practice

परम्परा बाट हाल को एक भयंकर

to becoming a massive international business that it is today.

अन्तराष्ट्रिय व्यापारमा रुपान्तरित भएको छ |

No longer just a foreign language on the school curriculum,

अब यो विद्यालयको एक वैदेशिक भाषाको पाठ्यक्रम मात्र सिमित छैन |

and no longer the sole domain

र मातृभूमि बेलायतको

of mother England,

एकल क्षेत्राधिकार भित्र मात्र पनि छैन |

it has become a bandwagon

यो त अब विश्व का हरेक अंग्रेजी-भाषी

for every English-speaking nation on earth.

मुलुकको लागि देखासिकी भएको छ |

And why not?

अनि किन नहोस त?

After all, the best education --

जे भएपनि, सर्वोत्कृष्ट शिक्षा --

according to the latest World University Rankings --

हालैको विश्वभरका विश्वविद्यालयहरुको वर्गीकरणलाई आधार मान्ने हो भने --

is to be found in the universities

बेलायत तथा अमेरिकाका

of the U.K. and the U.S.

विश्वविद्यालयहरुमा पाइन्छ |

So everybody wants to have an English education, naturally.

त्यसैले स्वभावत रूपमा सबैजनाले अंग्रेजी शिक्षा लिन चाहान्छन् |

But if you're not a native speaker,

तर यदि तपाई मौलिक भाषी हैन भने,

you have to pass a test.

तपाईले एउटा परीक्षा उत्तीर्ण गर्नु पर्छ |

Now can it be right

अब के एक विद्यार्थीलाई

to reject a student

भाषागत क्षमताको आधारमा मात्र

on linguistic ability alone?

निषेध गर्नु उचित हुन्छ त?

Perhaps you have a computer scientist

हुनसक्छ तपाई संग एक कम्प्युटर बैज्ञानिक छ

who's a genius.

जो अत्यन्त मेधावी छ |

Would he need the same language as a lawyer, for example?

उदहारण को लागि, के त्यो विद्यार्थीलाई एक वकिल हुन चाहिने जतिनै भाषा ज्ञान चाहिन्छ ?

Well, I don't think so.

खै, मलाई त त्यस्तो लाग्दैन |

We English teachers reject them all the time.

हामी अंग्रेजी शिक्षक सदैव उनीहरुलाई निषेध गर्छौ |

We put a stop sign,

हामी निषेधको चिन्ह राख्छौं,

and we stop them in their tracks.

र उनीहरुको बाटो बाट रोक्छौं |

They can't pursue their dream any longer,

अब उनीहरू आफ्नो सपना पुरा गर्न सक्दैनन्,

'til they get English.

जब सम्म उनीहरू अंग्रजी सिक्दैनन् |

Now let me put it this way:

अब मलाई यसरी प्रस्तुत गर्न दिनुहोस्,

if I met a monolingual Dutch speaker

मैले एक एकल-भाषी नेडरल्यान्डवासी भेटें,

who had the cure for cancer,

जो संग क्यान्सर को उपचार थियो,

would I stop him from entering my British University?

के म उनलाई एक बेलायती विश्वविद्यालयमा प्रवेश गर्न बाट रोक्ने थिएँ ?

I don't think so.

अहँ मलाई त त्यस्तो लाग्दैन |

But indeed, that is exactly what we do.

तर वास्तवमा हामी त्यहि गरिरहेका छौं |

We English teachers are the gatekeepers.

हामी अंग्रेजी शिक्षकहरु ढोके भएका छौं |

And you have to satisfy us first

तपाईले हामीलाई सन्तुष्ट पार्नु पर्छ

that your English is good enough.

कि तपाईको अंग्रजी राम्रो छ |

Now it can be dangerous

अब समाज को सानो समुदाय लाई

to give too much power

धेरै शक्ति दिनु

to a narrow segment of society.

खतरनाक पनि हुन सक्छ |

Maybe the barrier would be too universal.

त्यो बाधा अलि बढि नै विश्वव्यापी पनि हुनसक्छ |

Okay.

ल त्यसो भए |

"But," I hear you say,

"तर", म तपाईले भनेको सुन्छु,

"what about the research?

अनुसन्धान जति सबै

It's all in English."

अंग्रेजीमै छ नी, त्यो बारेमा के गर्नु ?

So the books are in English,

पुस्तकहरु सबै अंग्रेजीमा छन्,

the journals are done in English,

अनुसन्धानको प्रकाशन सबै अंग्रेजी मै गरिन्छ,

but that is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

तर त्यो आत्म-पूरा भविष्यवाणी मात्र हो |

It feeds the English requirement.

त्यसले अंग्रेजी को आवश्यकतालाई पोषण गर्छ |

And so it goes on.

र त्यो त्यसरी नै बढिरहन्छ |

I ask you, what happened to translation?

म तपाईहरुलाई सोध्छु, अनुवाद के भयो?

If you think about the Islamic Golden Age,

इस्लाम को स्वर्ण युगलाई नियाल्नुहोस,

there was lots of translation then.

त्यति बेला धेरै नै अनुवादहरु हुन्थे |

They translated from Latin and Greek

उनीहरुले ल्याटिन र ग्रीकलाई

into Arabic, into Persian,

अरेबिकमा, अनि फारसीमा अनुवाद गरे,

and then it was translated on

अनि फेरी युरोपको

into the Germanic languages of Europe

जर्मेनिक भाषामा अनुवाद गरियो

and the Romance languages.

अनि पछि रोमनिक भाषामा |

And so light shone upon the Dark Ages of Europe.

त्यस पछि युरोपको अन्धकार युगमा उज्यालो छायो |

Now don't get me wrong;

मलाई गलत अर्थ नलगाउनुहोला;

I am not against teaching English,

सबै अंग्रेजी शिक्षक महोदय,

all you English teachers out there.

म अंग्रेजी शिक्षा को विरुद्धमा छैन |

I love it that we have a global language.

म खुसि छु, हामी संग एउटा विश्व-भाषा छ |

We need one today more than ever.

अहिले त्यो हामीलाई सारै नै आवश्यक छ |

But I am against using it

तर म त्यसलाई एक बाधकको

as a barrier.

रूपमा प्रयोगको बिरुद्धमा छु |

Do we really want to end up with 600 languages

के हामी ६०० भाषामा सिमित हुन चाहन्छौं

and the main one being English, or Chinese?

अंग्रेजी अथवा चीनिया भाषालाई मुख्य बनाएर ?

We need more than that. Where do we draw the line?

हामीलाई त्यो भन्दा धेरै चाहिन्छ | हामीले सिमा कहाँ कोर्ने त ?

This system

अहिलेको यो प्रणालीले

equates intelligence

बौद्धिकतालाई

with a knowledge of English,

अंग्रेजीको ज्ञान संग समान मान्छ

which is quite arbitrary.

जुन स्वेच्छाचारी हो |

(Applause)

(ताली)

And I want to remind you

तपाईहरुलाई म एउटा कुरा सम्झाउन चाहान्छु

that the giants upon whose shoulders

त्यो महान काँध जसमा

today's intelligentsia stand

आजको बौद्धिकता अडेको छ,

did not have to have English,

त्यसले अंग्रेजी जान्नु परेको थिएन,

they didn't have to pass an English test.

उनीहरुले अंग्रेजीको परीक्षा उत्तीर्ण गर्नु परेको थिएन |

Case in point, Einstein.

उदाहरण को रूपमा आइन्स्टाइनलाई लिनुस् |

He, by the way, was considered remedial at school

उनलाई विद्यालयमा उपचाररत मानिन्थ्यो

because he was, in fact, dyslexic.

किनकि उनि, वास्तवमा भन्ने हो भने, सुस्तमनस्थिति का बिरामी थिए |

But fortunately for the world,

तर विश्वको भाग्यवश,

he did not have to pass an English test.

उनले अंग्रेजी परीक्षा उत्तीर्ण गर्नु परेको थिएन |

Because they didn't start until 1964

किनकि १९६४ सम्म उनीहरुले

with TOEFL,

टोफेल, अमेरिकन अंग्रेजीको परीक्षा,

the American test of English.

को सुरुवात गरेका थिएनन् |

Now it's exploded.

अहिले त्यो व्यापक छ |

There are lots and lots of tests of English.

आजकल अंग्रेजीका कयौं परिक्षाहरु छन् |

And millions and millions of students

र प्रत्येक बर्ष लाखौ बिद्यार्थीहरुले

take these tests every year.

त्यो परीक्षा दिन्छन् |

Now you might think, you and me,

अब तपाई सोच्नुहोला, तपाईहरु र म

"Those fees aren't bad, they're okay,"

ती शुल्कहरु त्यति नराम्रो छैन, ठिकै छन्,

but they are prohibitive

तर तिनीहरु बाधक छन्

to so many millions of poor people.

लाखौ गरिब मानिसहरुको लागि |

So immediately, we're rejecting them.

हामी तुरुन्तै उनीहरुलाई निषेध गरिरहेका छौ |

(Applause)

(ताली)

It brings to mind a headline I saw recently:

यसले मलाई भर्खरै को एउटा समाचार शिर्षक लाई सम्झाउँछ :

"Education: The Great Divide."

"शिक्षा : एक ठुलो विभाजन"

Now I get it,

अब बल्ल म बुझ्दै छु,

I understand why people would want to focus on English.

अब बल्ल बुझ्दैछु कि किन मानिसहरु अंग्रेजीमा केन्द्रित छन् |

They want to give their children the best chance in life.

उनीहरू आफ्ना नानीहरुलाई जीवनको उत्कृष्ट अवसर दिन चाहन्छन |

And to do that, they need a Western education.

अनि त्यो सब गर्नको लागि उनीहरूलाई पश्चिमी शिक्षा चाहिन्छ |

Because, of course, the best jobs

किनकि, अवस्य पनि, राम्रा अवसरहरु

go to people out of the Western Universities,

पश्चिमी विश्वविद्यालय बाट शिक्षितलाई जान्छ,

that I put on earlier.

जुन मैले पहिला भने |

It's a circular thing.

यो एक चक्रीय कुरा हो |

Okay.

ल त अब

Let me tell you a story about two scientists,

मलाई दुई बैज्ञानिकहरुको कथा भन्नदिनुस,

two English scientists.

दुई अंग्रेज बैज्ञानिक |

They were doing an experiment

उनीहरू एउटा प्रयोग गरिरहेका थिए

to do with genetics

जैविकीय प्रयोग

and the forelimbs and the hind limbs of animals.

जनावरहरुका अगाडि र पछाडि का पाउहरुको |

But they couldn't get the results they wanted.

तिनीहरुले आफुले चाहे जस्तो निचोड पाउन सकेनन |

They really didn't know what to do,

उनीहरुलाई के गर्ने भन्ने नै थाहा भएन,

until along came a German scientist

अनि एक जना जर्मन बैज्ञानिक आइपुगे

who realized that they were using two words

जसले उनीहरुले आगाडि र पछाडि का

for forelimb and hind limb,

पाउहरूको लागि दुई अलग अलग शब्दहरु प्रयोग गरिरहेका छन्

whereas genetics does not differentiate

जबकि जैविकताले त्यो कुरामा भेद गर्दैन

and neither does German.

न त जर्मन भाषा ले |

So bingo,

ओह हो,

problem solved.

समस्या त समाधान भयो |

If you can't think a thought,

यदि तपाई एउटा सोच ल्याउन सक्नुहुन्न भने,

you are stuck.

तपाई अड्किनु भयो |

But if another language can think that thought,

तर यदि अर्को भाषाले त्यो सोच ल्याउन सक्छ भने,

then, by cooperating,

सहकार्य द्वारा

we can achieve and learn so much more.

हामीले धेरै कुरा प्राप्त गर्न र जान्न सक्छौं |

My daughter

मेरी छोरी,

came to England from Kuwait.

कुबेत बाट इंग्ल्यान्ड आइन् |

She had studied science and mathematics in Arabic.

उनले बिज्ञान र गणित अरेबिक भाषामा सिकेकी थिईन |

It's an Arabic-medium school.

त्यो अरेबिक माध्यम बिद्यालय थियो |

She had to translate it into English at her grammar school.

उनले त्यसलाई आफ्नो प्राथमिक बिद्यालयमा अनुबाद गर्नुपर्थ्यो |

And she was the best in the class

र उनि आफ्नो कक्षामा सबसे तेज थिईन

at those subjects.

सबै बिषयहरुमा |

Which tells us

यसले हामीलाई के बुझाउछ भने

that when students come to us from abroad,

जब विदेश बाट बिद्यार्थीहरु हामी कहाँ आउछन्,

we may not be giving them enough credit

हामीले उनीहरूलाई उनीहरुको ज्ञानको लागि

for what they know,

उचित मान्यता नदिएको हुनसक्छ

and they know it in their own language.

र उनीहरुलाई त्यो कुराको आफ्नो भाषामा राम्रो ज्ञान हुन सक्छ |

When a language dies,

जब एउटा भाषा लोप हुन्छ,

we don't know what we lose with that language.

त्यो भाषा संग हामी के गुमाउदै छौ भन्ने ज्ञान हुदैन |

This is -- I don't know if you saw it on CNN recently --

जस्तै -- तपाईहरुले भर्खरै सी.एन.एन. मा हेर्नुभयो कि हेर्नुभएन --

they gave the Heroes Award

उनीहरूले केन्या को एउटा गोठालोलाई

to a young Kenyan shepherd boy

"सी.एन.एन. नायक" पुरस्कारले सम्मान गरे

who couldn't study at night in his village,

जसले आफ्नो गाउँमा अन्य बालबालिका सरह

like all the village children,

राती पढ्न सकेन,

because the kerosene lamp,

किनकि त्यो मट्टीतेल को बत्ति बाट

it had smoke and it damaged his eyes.

धुवा आउथ्यो र त्यसले उसका आँखा खराब भए |

And anyway, there was never enough kerosene,

र त्यसमाथि, त्यहि मट्टीतेल पनि पुग्दो हुदैन थियो,

because what does a dollar a day buy for you?

किनकि त्यो न्युन कमाईले के नै पो दिन सक्छ र ?

So he invented

त्यसैले गर्दा उसले आविष्कार गर्यो

a cost-free solar lamp.

एउटा सित्तैमा चल्ने सौर्य बत्तिको |

And now the children in his village

अब उसका गाउँका केटाकेटीहरुले

get the same grades at school

विद्यालयमा त्यति नै अंक ल्याउछन्

as the children who have electricity at home.

जति घरमा बिजुली भएका केटाकेटीहरुले ल्याउछन|

(Applause)

(ताली)

When he received his award,

जब उनले त्यो पुरस्कार पाए

he said these lovely words:

उनले यी सुन्दर शब्दहरु भने :

"The children can lead Africa from what it is today,

"केटाकेटीहरुले अफ्रीकाको अहिलेको अवस्था,

a dark continent,

एउटा अधेरो अशिक्षित महादेश, बाट

to a light continent."

एक उज्यालो र शिक्षित महादेश बनाउने तिर निर्देसित गर्नेछन्"

A simple idea,

एउटा साधारण सोच,

but it could have such far-reaching consequences.

तर जो संग त्यस्तो दुरगामी असर देखाउने क्षमता हुनसक्छ |

People who have no light,

ती मानिसहरु, जो संग उज्यालो छैन,

whether it's physical or metaphorical,

भौतिक रूपमा अथवा लाक्षणिक रूपमा,

cannot pass our exams,

उनीहरुले हाम्रो परीक्षा उतिर्ण गर्न सक्दैनन्,

and we can never know what they know.

र हामीहरुलाई उनीहरुलाई के थाहा छ भन्ने कुरा कहिले पनि पत्तो हुदैन |

Let us not keep them and ourselves

अब हामी आफु तथा उनीहरुलाई

in the dark.

अधेरोमा नराखौं |

Let us celebrate diversity.

विविधतालाई अंगालौं |

Mind your language.

आफ्नो भाषा बारे सोचौँ |

Use it to spread great ideas.

त्यसलाई महान विचारहरु फैलाउन प्रयोग गरौं |
