Well actually, I hope for a while longer yet.

I have been living and teaching in the Gulf

And in that time, I have seen a lot of changes.

And I want to talk to you today

about language loss

and the globalization of English.

I want to tell you about my friend

아부다비에서 성인들에게 영어를

who was teaching English to adults in Abu Dhabi.

가르치고 있는 제 친구 얘기부터 해볼까요.

And one fine day,

어느 좋은 날,

she decided to take them into the garden

그녀는 정원으로 학생들을 데리고 갔답니다.

to teach them some nature vocabulary.

자연에 관한 어휘 가르치기 위해서였죠.

But it was she who ended up learning

그런데 반대로 그녀가 지역 식물에 관한

all the Arabic words for the local plants,

여러 아랍어 단어들을 배우고 말았지요.

as well as their uses --

그 뿐만 아니라, 식물들의 이용 방법도 배웠어요.

medicinal uses, cosmetics,

그러니까, 의약품으로 효능, 화장품 대용,

cooking, herbal.

요리 방법, 약초로 활용하는 방법같은 것들이요.

How did those students get all that knowledge?

어떻게 그 학생들이 이 모든 지식을 갖고 있었을까요?

Of course, from their grandparents

물론, 그들의 할머니 할아버지로부터,

and even their great-grandparents.

심지어 자신의 증조할머니, 할아버지로부터 배운 겁니다.

It's not necessary to tell you how important it is

세대 간의 의사소통이 얼마나

to be able to communicate

중요한지 굳이 여러분께

across generations.

말씀드릴 필요 없겠지요.

But sadly, today,

하지만 슬프게도, 오늘날

languages are dying

많은 언어가 죽어 가고 있습니다.

at an unprecedented rate.

전례 없는 속도로 말입니다.

A language dies every 14 days.

14일마다 하나의 언어가 사라지고 있습니다.

Now, at the same time,

English is the undisputed global language.

영어는 명실공히 세계 공용어입니다.

Could there be a connection?

Well I don't know.

But I do know that I've seen a lot of changes.

When I first came out to the Gulf, I came to Kuwait

in the days when it was still a hardship post.

Actually, not that long ago.

That is a little bit too early.

But nevertheless,

I was recruited by the British Council,

along with about 25 other teachers.

And we were the first non-Muslims

to teach in the state schools there in Kuwait.

최초의 비이슬람교도들이었습니다.

We were brought to teach English

영어를 가르치기 위해서 불려 갔었죠.

because the government wanted to modernize the country

쿠웨이트 정부는 교육을 통해 국가를 현대화하고

and to empower the citizens through education.

국민들의 능력도 키우길 원했거든요.

And of course, the U.K. benefited

그리고 물론, 영국이 얻은 혜택은

from some of that lovely oil wealth.

그 매력적인 석유 자원이었죠.

Okay.

좋아요.

Now this is the major change that I've seen --

바로 이것이 제가 본 그 대단한 변화입니다.

how teaching English

영어를 가르친다는

has morphed

상호이익이 되는

from being a mutually beneficial practice

작은 활동을 시작으로 해서

to becoming a massive international business that it is today.

거대한 다국적 교역사업으로 발전하게 된 것이죠.

No longer just a foreign language on the school curriculum,

더 이상 영어는 단순히 교과 과정에 있는 외국어 중 하나가 아닙니다.

and no longer the sole domain

이제 더이상은 모태인 영국이라는

of mother England,

지역에 국한된 언어도 아닙니다.

it has become a bandwagon

이제는 지구상 모든 영어권 국가들의

for every English-speaking nation on earth.

우세한 언어가 되어버렸습니다.

And why not?

딱히 안 될 이유가 있나요?

After all, the best education --

결국 최고의 교육은,

according to the latest World University Rankings --

최근 세계적 대학 순위에도 나타나듯이,

is to be found in the universities

영국과 미국의 대학에서

of the U.K. and the U.S.

받을 수 있습니다.

So everybody wants to have an English education, naturally.

그러니 모두 자연스레 영어 교육을 받길 원합니다.

But if you're not a native speaker,

하지만 당신의 모국어가 영어가 아니면

you have to pass a test.

어떠한 시험을 통과해야 합니다.

Now can it be right

과연 학생을 단지

to reject a student

언어적 능력만 보고

on linguistic ability alone?

거부하는 것이 옳은가요?

Perhaps you have a computer scientist

어떤 천재 컴퓨터 과학자가 있다고 치죠.

who's a genius.

어떤 천재 컴퓨터 과학자가 있다고 치죠.

Would he need the same language as a lawyer, for example?

그렇다면 그에게 변호사와 같은 언어능력이 필요할까요?

Well, I don't think so.

글쎄요, 전 그렇게 생각하지 않습니다.

We English teachers reject them all the time.

우리 영어 교사들은 늘 그들을 거부합니다.

We put a stop sign,

우리는 그들을 멈춰 세우고

and we stop them in their tracks.

그들의 앞 길을 가로막죠.

They can't pursue their dream any longer,

'til they get English.

Now let me put it this way:

if I met a monolingual Dutch speaker

who had the cure for cancer,

would I stop him from entering my British University?

I don't think so.

아닐 겁니다.

But indeed, that is exactly what we do.

하지만 실상은 우리는 그렇게 하고 있습니다.

We English teachers are the gatekeepers.

우리, 영어 교사들은 (외부인을 막는) 문지기이고,

And you have to satisfy us first

여러분은 영어 실력이 충분하다는 것을

that your English is good enough.

우리에게 증명해야 하는 겁니다.

Now it can be dangerous

문제는 사회의 좁은 특정 부분에 너무 많을 힘을

to give too much power

to a narrow segment of society.

부여하는 것이 위험할 수 있다는 것입니다.

Maybe the barrier would be too universal.

Okay.

"But," I hear you say,

"what about the research?

It's all in English."

So the books are in English,

the journals are done in English,

but that is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

It feeds the English requirement.

영어가 필요조건이 되도록 강화시킬 뿐입니다.

And so it goes on.

그래서 돌고 돌아 계속되는 거죠.

I ask you, what happened to translation?

제가 여러분께 묻죠. 번역은 또 어떤가요?

If you think about the Islamic Golden Age,

이슬람 황금시대를 돌이켜보면

there was lots of translation then.

그때는 많은 번역작업이 이루어졌습니다.

They translated from Latin and Greek

그들은 라틴어와 그리스어를

into Arabic, into Persian,

페르시아어로 아랍어로 번역했었습니다.

and then it was translated on

그리고 그것이 다시 유럽의

into the Germanic languages of Europe

게르만어와 로망스어로

and the Romance languages.

번역되었죠.

And so light shone upon the Dark Ages of Europe.

그리하여 유럽​​ 중세 암흑시대에 빛이 밝혀진 겁니다.

Now don't get me wrong;

자, 제 말을 오해하지 마셨으면 합니다.

I am not against teaching English,

저는 수 많은 영어 교사들이나

all you English teachers out there.

영어 교육에 반대하는 것은 아니에요.

I love it that we have a global language.

세계 공용어가 있다는 것은 좋은 일이죠.

We need one today more than ever.

어느 때보다 더욱 우리는 세계 공용어가 필요합니다.

But I am against using it

하지만 전 그것을 장벽으로

as a barrier.

사용하는 것에 반대합니다.

Do we really want to end up with 600 languages

여러분은 진정 단 600개의 언어만을 원하십니까?

and the main one being English, or Chinese?

그 중에서 영어나 중국어만 주요 언어가 되기를 바라세요?

We need more than that. Where do we draw the line?

우리는 더 많은 언어가 필요합니다. 한도를 정할 필요가 있나요?

This system

equates intelligence

영어로 된 지식만을

with a knowledge of English,

which is quite arbitrary.

And I want to remind you

that the giants upon whose shoulders

현대 지식인들의 디딤돌이 되어 준

today's intelligentsia stand

위인들에게는 영어가 필요 없었고,

did not have to have English,

영어 시험을 통과할 필요가 없었음을

they didn't have to pass an English test.

상기시키고자 합니다.

Case in point, Einstein.

일례로, 아인슈타인도

He, by the way, was considered remedial at school

학교에서 보충수업이 필요한 아이로 취급 받았습니다.

because he was, in fact, dyslexic.

실제로 그가 난독증이었기 때문입니다.

But fortunately for the world,

하지만 무엇보다도 다행스러운건

he did not have to pass an English test.

Because they didn't start until 1964

with TOEFL,

the American test of English.

Now it's exploded.

There are lots and lots of tests of English.

And millions and millions of students

take these tests every year.

매년 이 시험들을 치릅니다.

Now you might think, you and me,

물론 이렇게 생각하실 수 있습니다.

"Those fees aren't bad, they're okay,"

but they are prohibitive

'응시료가 저 정도면 그리 나쁘지 않은데요.'

to so many millions of poor people.

하지만 수많은 가난한 이들에겐

So immediately, we're rejecting them.

엄두조차 낼 수 없는 시험입니다.

우린 즉각적으로 그들을 거부하는 거지요. (박수)

It brings to mind a headline I saw recently:

이는 제가 최근에 본 기사 제목을 떠올리게 합니다.

"Education: The Great Divide."

"교육: 그 대분수령"

Now I get it,

이제야 알 것 같네요.

I understand why people would want to focus on English.

사람들이 왜 영어에 집착하는지 알것도 같습니다.

They want to give their children the best chance in life.

사람들은 자녀에게 인생 최고의 기회를 주고 싶어합니다.

And to do that, they need a Western education.

그러기 위해서는 서구의 교육이 필요하죠.

Because, of course, the best jobs

왜냐하면, 최고의 직장은 당연히

go to people out of the Western Universities,

서구의 대학을 나온 사람들을 위한 것이니까요.

that I put on earlier.

제가 아까 말씀드린 데로

It's a circular thing.

이건 돌고 도는 일이니까요.

Okay.

자 그럼, 여러분께

Let me tell you a story about two scientists,

어느 두 과학자의 이야기를 들려드리죠.

two English scientists.

두 영국인 과학자가 있었는데요.

They were doing an experiment

그들은 유전자와 관련하여

to do with genetics

동물의 앞다리(forelimb)와

and the forelimbs and the hind limbs of animals.

뒷다리(hind limb)에 관한 실험을 하고 있었죠.

But they couldn't get the results they wanted.

하지만 그들은 원하는 결과를 얻을 수 없었습니다.

They really didn't know what to do,

그들이 정말로 무엇을 해야 할지 몰랐어요.

until along came a German scientist

어느 독일 과학자가 나타나기 전 까지는요.

who realized that they were using two words

그는 영국 과학자들이 앞다리와 뒷다리를 칭할 때

for forelimb and hind limb,

다른 단어를 쓴다는 것을 알아차렸지요.

whereas genetics does not differentiate

하지만 유전학은 그 둘을 구분하지 않았고,

and neither does German.

독일어 또한, 그 구분이 없었던 겁니다.

So bingo,

그래서 빙고,

problem solved.

문제가 해결되었죠.

If you can't think a thought,

당신이 어떤 생각을 할 수 없는 경우,

you are stuck.

진전이 없이 막혀버릴 수 있습니다.

But if another language can think that thought,

하지만 다른 언어로는 그 생각을 할 수 있다면,

then, by cooperating,

언어간의 협력을 통해서

we can achieve and learn so much more.

우리는 훨씬 더 많은 것을 배우고 이룰 수 있습니다.

My daughter

제 딸은,

came to England from Kuwait.

쿠웨이트에서 영국으로 왔습니다.

She had studied science and mathematics in Arabic.

그녀는 과학과 수학을 아랍어로 공부했죠.

It's an Arabic-medium school.

아랍 중학교를 다녔거든요.

She had to translate it into English at her grammar school.

그녀는 영국의 중학교에서는 그 과목을 영어로 번역해야 했습니다.

And she was the best in the class

그리고, 그 과목에 관해선 그녀는

at those subjects.

학급에서 최고였습니다.

Which tells us

이는 우리에게 시사하는 바가 있죠.

that when students come to us from abroad,

어떤 학생들이 외국에서 왔을 때,

we may not be giving them enough credit

우리는 그들이 알고 있는 것에 대해

for what they know,

제대로 평가하지 않을 수도 있습니다.

and they know it in their own language.

그들은 그들의 언어로 알고 있는 것이지요.

When a language dies,

한 언어가 사라지면

we don't know what we lose with that language.

그 언어와 함께 무엇을 더 잃게 될 지 알 수 없습니다.

This is -- I don't know if you saw it on CNN recently --

이것은 - 여러분이 최근 CNN에서 이걸 보았는지 모르겠네요 -

they gave the Heroes Award

CNN은 케냐의 어린 양치기 소년에게

to a young Kenyan shepherd boy

올해의 영웅상을 수여했습니다.

who couldn't study at night in his village,

그가 사는 마을에서는 밤에는 공부할 수 없었습니다.

like all the village children,

그 마을의 다른 아이들과 마찬가지로,

because the kerosene lamp,

it had smoke and it damaged his eyes.

And anyway, there was never enough kerosene,

A simple idea,

but it could have such far-reaching consequences.

People who have no light,

whether it's physical or metaphorical,

cannot pass our exams,

and we can never know what they know.

Let us not keep them and ourselves
