I am a writer.

Writing books is my profession but it's more than that, of course.

It is also my great lifelong love and fascination.

And I don't expect that that's ever going to change.

But, that said, something kind of peculiar has happened recently

in my life and in my career,

which has caused me to have to recalibrate my whole relationship with this work.

And the peculiar thing is that I recently wrote this book,

this memoir called "Eat, Pray, Love"

which, decidedly unlike any of my previous books,

went out in the world for some reason, and became this big,

mega-sensation, international bestseller thing.

The result of which is that everywhere I go now,

people treat me like I'm doomed.

Seriously -- doomed, doomed!

بەڕاستی پاشەڕۆژم ....پاشەڕۆژم

Like, they come up to me now, all worried, and they say,

وەک ئێستا دێن بۆلام، هەموویان دڵتەنگن و دەڵێن

تۆ ناترسیت.. ناترسیت لەوەی کە هەرگیز نەتوانی بگەیت بەو لوتکەیە؟

"Aren't you afraid you're never going to be able to top that?

Aren't you afraid you're going to keep writing for your whole life

ناترسیت لەوەی نەتوانیت بەردەوام بیت لە نوسین تا کۆتایی ژیانت

and you're never again going to create a book

وە هەرگیز نەتوانیت جارێکی تر کتێبێک ئامادە بکەیت

that anybody in the world cares about at all,

هیچ کەسێک لە جیهاندا گرنگیت پێنەدات

ever again?"

So that's reassuring, you know.

کەواتە ئەمە شتێکی ئاسودەییە وەک دەزانن

But it would be worse, except for that I happen to remember

بەڵام خراۆتر دەبیت، پێشبینی دەکرێت ئەوەم بیر بکەوێتەوە

that over 20 years ago, when I was a teenager,

بیست ساڵ لەمەوپێش، کاتێک بۆ یەکەم جار بەخەڵکم دەگوت..کاتێک کە هەرزەکار بووم

when I first started telling people that I wanted to be a writer,

دەمویست ببم بە نوسەر

جۆرێک لە بنەماکانی ترسم لە خۆمدا دەبینی

I was met with this same sort of fear-based reaction.

خەڵک دەڵێن ئایا تۆ ناترسیت جارێکی تر هیچ سەرکەوتنێک بەدەست نەهێنیتەوە؟

And people would say, "Aren't you afraid you're never going to have any success?

Aren't you afraid the humiliation of rejection will kill you?

ئایا ناترسیت کە خۆ گێلکردن و ڕەتکردنەوە بتکوژێت؟

Aren't you afraid that you're going to work your whole life at this craft

ئایا ناترسیت کە دەبێت هەموو ژیانت دەبێت ئیش بکەیت لەم بەلەمەدا

وە هیچ ئەنجامێکی نەبێت

and nothing's ever going to come of it

وە کۆتایی ژیانت لەسەر کۆمەڵێک خەونی پووچ کۆتایی پێ بێت

and you're going to die on a scrap heap of broken dreams

وە دەمت پڕبێت لە خۆڵەمێشی سەرنەکەوتن؟

with your mouth filled with bitter ash of failure?"

(Laughter)

Like that, you know.

وەک ئەوەی دەزانن

The answer -- the short answer to all those questions is, "Yes."

وەڵامەکە... کورترین وەڵام بۆ ئەم پرسیارانە ئەوەیە ،،،بەڵێ

Yes, I'm afraid of all those things.

بەڵێ، من دەترسم لە هەموو ئەم شتانە

And I always have been.

وە هەموو کاتەکان وابوم

And I'm afraid of many, many more things besides

من دەترسم لەزۆر شتی تر

that people can't even guess at,

کە خەڵک تەنانەت بیریشی لێناکەنەوە

like seaweed and other things that are scary.

وەک، گژوگیا ئاویەکان، هەندێک شتی ترسناکی تر

But, when it comes to writing,

بەڵام شتەکە دەربارەی نوسینە

the thing that I've been sort of thinking about lately, and wondering about lately,

ئەو شتەی کە بیرم لێدەکردەوە و سەرم سوڕما بوودەربارەی ئەوقە بوو کە بۆچی؟

is why?

ئێوە دەزانن، ئەوە ئاقڵانەیە؟

You know, is it rational?

ئایا ئەمە ڕاستە کە دەبێت هەموو خەڵک چاوەڕوان بن

Is it logical that anybody should be expected

to be afraid of the work that they feel they were put on this Earth to do.

بۆ دەبێت بترسیت لە ئیش بەشێوەیەک کە هەست بکەیت ئەوان ئەم زەویەیان دەست بەسەرا گرتوە

And what is it specifically about creative ventures

وەک دەزانن شتە تایبەتیەکان بەرامبەر داهێنانە

that seems to make us really nervous about each other's mental health

وادیارە وامان لێدەکات کە دەبێت هەست بە ناجێگیری بکەیبن دەربارەی تەندروستی مێشکی تاکە تاکمان

in a way that other careers kind of don't do, you know?

بەشێوەیەک ئیشەکانی تر ئەوە ناکەن، دەزانن؟

Like my dad, for example, was a chemical engineer

وەک باوکم ئەندازیاری کیمیایی بوو

and I don't recall once in his 40 years of chemical engineering

anybody asking him if he was afraid to be a chemical engineer, you know?

"That chemical-engineering block, John, how's it going?"

It just didn't come up like that, you know?

But to be fair, chemical engineers as a group

بەڵام بۆئەوەی بترسیت، ئەندازیاریە کیمیایەکان وەک گروپێک

haven't really earned a reputation over the centuries

هیچ ناوبانگیەکیان بەدەست نەهێناوە لە سەدەکانی پێشوەوە

for being alcoholic manic-depressives.

We writers, we kind of do have that reputation,

and not just writers, but creative people across all genres,

it seems, have this reputation for being enormously mentally unstable.

And all you have to do is look at the very grim death count

in the 20th century alone, of really magnificent creative minds

who died young and often at their own hands, you know?

And even the ones who didn't literally commit suicide

seem to be really undone by their gifts, you know.

Norman Mailer, just before he died, last interview, he said,

نۆرمان مایلەر پێءش ئەوەی بمرێت، لە چاوپێکەوتنێکدا گوتی

"Every one of my books has killed me a little more."

هەر کتێبێک لە کتێبەکانم زیاتر منی کوشت

An extraordinary statement to make about your life's work.

بەشێوەیەکی سەیر ئەم دەستەواژەیە وات لێدەکات کە لەژیانتا ئیش بکەیت

But we don't even blink when we hear somebody say this,

بەڵام ئێمە دوو دڵ نابین کاتێک ئەم قسەیە لە یەکێک دەبیستین

because we've heard that kind of stuff for so long

چونکە ئێمە ئەم جۆرە قسانەمان زۆر گوێ لێبوە

and somehow we've completely internalized and accepted collectively

بەشێوەیەک کە ڕەزامەندی خۆمان و دەوروبەرمان بەدەست بهێنین

this notion that creativity and suffering are somehow inherently linked

بەشێوەیەک لە شێوەکان ئەم بیرۆکەی داهێنان وچەوساندنەوەیە پەیوەستن بەیەکەوە

and that artistry, in the end, will always ultimately lead to anguish.

لەگەڵ هونەریشدا، وە لەکۆتایشدا دەڕوات بەرەو نەهامەتی

And the question that I want to ask everybody here today

دەمەوێت لە هەریەکێک بپرسم کە ئەمڕۆ لێرەدایە

is are you guys all cool with that idea?

ئەم بیرۆکەیەتان بەلاوە باشە؟

Are you comfortable with that?

ئایا ئاسودەن لەگەڵ ئەوەدا

Because you look at it even from an inch away and, you know --

وەک دەزانن لەبەرئەوەی لە گۆشە نیگایەکی دورترەوە سەیری بکەین

I'm not at all comfortable with that assumption.

من بەهیچ شێوەیەک ڕازی نیم بەوە

I think it's odious.

هەست دەکەم ئەوە دوژمنێکی سەرسەختە

And I also think it's dangerous,

واهەست دەکەم ئەوە مەترسیدارە

and I don't want to see it perpetuated into the next century.

من نامەوێت ئەمە ببینم ڕووبدات لە سەدەی داهاتودا

بڕوام وایە دەبێت ئێمە هانی ئەوانە بدەین کە مێشکیان داهێنانکارە بۆ ژیان

I think it's better if we encourage our great creative minds to live.

And I definitely know that, in my case -- in my situation --

من ئەوە باش دەزانم ، لە حاڵ و بردۆخی خۆمدا

it would be very dangerous for me to start sort of leaking down that dark path

ئەمە بۆ من مەترسیدارە ئەگەر ئەم ڕێگە ناڕێکە تەشەنە بکات و

of assumption,

بسەپێنرێت، بەتایبەتی ئەگەر سەیری ئەم بارودۆخە بکەین

particularly given the circumstance that I'm in right now in my career.

مەبەستم بارودۆخی ناو پیشەکەمە

Which is -- you know, like check it out,

دەتوانن، بگەڕێن بەدوایا

I'm pretty young, I'm only about 40 years old.

من هێشتا گەنجێکی جوانم، تەمەنم تەنها چل ساڵە

لەوانەیە هێشتا(چوار) دەساڵی ترم مابێت بۆ کردنی ئیشەکەم

I still have maybe another four decades of work left in me.

And it's exceedingly likely that anything I write from this point forward

دەگونجێت لەمەودوا حەزم لەهەر شتێک بوو بینووسم لەم خاڵەوە بڕۆم بەرەو پێشەوە

is going to be judged by the world as the work that came after

وە هەڵسەنگاندنی بۆ بکرێت لەلایەن خەڵکەوە وەک ئەو ئیشەی بەم دواییانە کردم

the freakish success of my last book, right?

سەرکەوتنێکی نامۆم بەدەست هێنا دوایین کتێبما، وانیە؟

I should just put it bluntly, because we're all sort of friends here now --

دەمەوێت بەڕاستی بیڵێم، چونکە ئێمە ئێستا بەشێوەیەک هاوڕێین

it's exceedingly likely that my greatest success is behind me.

لەسنور بەدەر حەزم بەو سەرکەوتنانە هەیە

So Jesus, what a thought!

ئۆو خوایە. چی بیرکردنەوەیەکە

That's the kind of thought that could lead a person

وەک دەزانن ئەم شێوە بیرکردنەوەیە وا لە کەسێک دەکات

to start drinking gin at nine o'clock in the morning,

لە نۆی بەیانییەوە دەست بکات بە مەی خواردنەوە

and I don't want to go there.

من نامەوێت وابکەم

(Laughter)

I would prefer to keep doing this work that I love.

ئەوەم بەلاوە پەسەندە کە بەردەوام بم لەسەر ئیشەکەم و خۆشم دەوێت

بۆیە پرسیارێک دێتە پێش. چۆن؟

And so, the question becomes, how?

And so, it seems to me, upon a lot of reflection,

وا دەردەکەوێت بۆ من، بێگومان دوای بیرکردنەوەیەکی زۆر

that the way that I have to work now, in order to continue writing,

ئەوەیە کە پێویستە من ئیش بکەم هەروەک ئێستام، وە دەبێت بەردەوام بم لەسەری

is that I have to create some sort of protective psychological construct, right?

بەشێوەیەک لە شێوەکان پێویستم بە پاراستنی دەروونی هەیە، وانیە؟

I have to sort of find some way to have a safe distance

پێویستە ڕێگەیەک بدۆزمەوە بۆ دووریەکی سەلامەتی

between me, as I am writing, and my very natural anxiety

about what the reaction to that writing is going to be, from now on.

And, as I've been looking, over the last year,

for models for how to do that,

I've been sort of looking across time,

and I've been trying to find other societies

to see if they might have had better and saner ideas than we have

about how to help creative people

sort of manage the inherent emotional risks of creativity.

And that search has led me to ancient Greece and ancient Rome.

ئەو گەڕان و پشکنینە بردمی بۆ یۆنانی کۆن و ڕۆمای کۆن

So stay with me, because it does circle around and back.

بۆیە لەگەڵمدا بن، ئەمە بازنەیەک دەڕوات و دەگەڕێتەوە

But, ancient Greece and ancient Rome --

بەڵام یۆنانی کۆن و ڕۆمای کۆن

people did not happen to believe that creativity

خەڵک باوەڕیان بە داهێنان نەبوو

came from human beings back then, OK?

کە لە ئادەمیزدا بێت لەو کاتەدا، باشە؟

People believed that creativity was this divine attendant spirit

خەڵک باوەڕیان وابوو کە داهێنان ڕۆحێکی خوایی بووە

that came to human beings from some distant and unknowable source,

کە دێت بۆ ئادەمیزادەکان لە سەرچاوەیەکی دوورو نەناسراوەوە

for distant and unknowable reasons.

بۆ چەند هۆیەکی دوورو نەناسراو

The Greeks famously called these divine attendant spirits of creativity "daemons."

یۆنانە بەناوبانگەکان ئەم ڕۆحانەی لەگەڵ داهێناندا دەهاتن ناویان نابون جنۆکە

Socrates, famously, believed that he had a daemon

سوقڕاتی بەناوبانگ باوەڕیان وابو کە ئەو جنۆکەیەکی هەبوە

who spoke wisdom to him from afar.

قسەی لەگەڵ کردوە لە دووری دادگاکەوە

The Romans had the same idea,

ڕۆمانیەکان هەمان بیرۆکەیان هەبوو

but they called that sort of disembodied creative spirit a genius.

بەڵام ئەوان ناویان نابو ڕۆحێکی بۆنخۆشی داهێنەری بلیمەت

Which is great, because the Romans did not actually think

ئەوە مەزنە، چونکە لەڕاستیدا رٶمانەکان باوەڕیان بەوە نەبوو

that a genius was a particularly clever individual.

کە بلیمەتی بەشێکە لە زیرەکی تاکەکەسی

They believed that a genius was this, sort of magical divine entity,

who was believed to literally live in the walls of an artist's studio,

kind of like Dobby the house elf,

and who would come out

and sort of invisibly assist the artist with their work

and would shape the outcome of that work.

So brilliant -- there it is, right there, that distance that I'm talking about --

that psychological construct to protect you from the results of your work.

ئەوە ئەو سازدانە سروشتیەیە کە دەتپارێزێت لە ئەنجامی ئیشەکەت

And everyone knew that this is how it functioned, right?

هەموو کەسێک دەزانێت ئەمە شێوەی ئیشەکەیەتی، وانیە؟

So the ancient artist was protected from certain things,

like, for example, too much narcissism, right?

If your work was brilliant, you couldn't take all the credit for it,

everybody knew that you had this disembodied genius who had helped you.

If your work bombed, not entirely your fault, you know?

ئەگەر ئیشەکەت خراپ بێت ئەمە هەڵەی تۆ نیە، ئایا دەزانن؟

Everyone knew your genius was kind of lame.

هەموویان دەیانزانی کە ژیریەکەت کەمێک خوارە

(Laughter)

بەم شێوەیە خەڵک بیریان لە داهێنان دەکردەوە لە ڕۆژئاوا بۆ ماوەیەکی دوور و درێژ

And this is how people thought about creativity in the West

for a really long time.

ئینجا سەردەمی گۆڕانکاری هات و هەموو شتێک گۆڕا

And then the Renaissance came and everything changed,

and we had this big idea, and the big idea was,

بیرۆکەیەکی گەورەمان بۆ هات، ئەویش ئەوە بوو

let's put the individual human being at the center of the universe

با هەموو تاکەکان بکەیەنە سەنتەر لە جیهاندا

لەسەروو هەموو خواکان و نهێنیەکانەوە، لەوە زیاتر هیچ ژوورێک نیە لەوێدا

above all gods and mysteries,

and there's no more room for mystical creatures

بۆ دروستکراوە نادیارەکان بۆ نوسینەوەی پیرۆزیەکان

who take dictation from the divine.

And it's the beginning of rational humanism,

ئەوەش سەرەتای ژیری ئادەمیزادیە

and people started to believe that creativity

خەڵک دەستیان کرد بە باوەڕکردن بە داهێنان

کە بەتەواوەتی لە خودی تاکەوە سەرچاوە دەگرێت

came completely from the self of the individual.

And for the first time in history,

بۆ یەکەم جار لە مێژودا

you start to hear people referring to this or that artist as being a genius,

گوێت لە خەڵک دەبێت کە دەڵێن ئەم هونەرمەندە زرنگە

rather than having a genius.

لە جیاتی ئەوەی کە بڵێن زرنگی هەیە

And I got to tell you, I think that was a huge error.

دەبێت پێتان بڵێم، وا هەستدەکەم کە ئەمە هەڵەیەکی زۆر گەورەیە

You know, I think that allowing somebody, one mere person

وەک دەزانن، هەستدەکەم ئەوە دواکەوتنی کەسێک یان زیاتر لە کەسێکە

to believe that he or she is like, the vessel,

کە باوەڕی وابێت ئەو کوڕە یان ئەو کچە وەک قاپ وایە

you know, like the font and the essence and the source

وەک دەزانن وەکو فۆنت و ناوەڕۆک و سەرچاوەکە

هەموویان پیرۆزە، داهێنانەکان، نادیارەکان، نهێنیە بێ کۆتاکان

of all divine, creative, unknowable, eternal mystery

is just a smidge too much responsibility to put on one fragile, human psyche.

ئەمە دەپاڵێورێت بۆ بەرپرسیاریەتیەکی زۆری لەسەرە دەربارەی شکستهێنانەکان، ڕۆحی مرۆڤەکان

It's like asking somebody to swallow the sun.

It just completely warps and distorts egos,

and it creates all these unmanageable expectations about performance.

And I think the pressure of that

has been killing off our artists for the last 500 years.

And, if this is true,

and I think it is true,

the question becomes, what now?

Can we do this differently?

Maybe go back to some more ancient understanding

about the relationship between humans and the creative mystery.

Maybe not.

Maybe we can't just erase 500 years of rational humanistic thought

in one 18 minute speech.

And there's probably people in this audience

who would raise really legitimate scientific suspicions

about the notion of, basically, fairies

who follow people around rubbing fairy juice on their projects and stuff.

I'm not, probably, going to bring you all along with me on this.

من نامەوێت بڕوا بەهیچ یەکێک لەمانە بکەم

But the question that I kind of want to pose is --

بەڵام ئەو پرسیارەی کە دەموێت بیکەم ئەوەیە

you know, why not?

دەزانن، بۆ نا؟

Why not think about it this way?

بۆچی بەم شێوەیە بیر لەم ڕێگەیە نەکەینەوە؟

Because it makes as much sense as anything else I have ever heard

چونکە لە ڕادەبەدەر لە شتەکاینی تر هەستیارترە، لە زۆر کەسیشم بیستوە

in terms of explaining the utter maddening capriciousness

ڕونکردنەوە هەڵگێڕانەوەی بابەتەکەیە

of the creative process.

لە میانەی پڕۆسەی داهێناندا

A process which, as anybody who has ever tried to make something --

پڕۆسەیەک کە، هەرکەسێک هەوڵ دەدات بۆ دروستکردنی شتێک

وەک ئەوەی وتم بۆ هەموو ئەوانەی لیرەدان

which is to say basically everyone here ---

knows does not always behave rationally.

دەزانن کە هەموو کاتێک بەم شێوەیە هەڵسوکەوت ناکەن

And, in fact, can sometimes feel downright paranormal.

لەڕاستیدا هەندێک کەس دەتوانێت هەست بە تێپەڕبوونی ئەمە بکات

I had this encounter recently

ماوەیەک لەمەوپێش چاوم بە ساعیرێکی ئەمەریکی کەوت ناوی ڕوث ستۆن بوو

where I met the extraordinary American poet Ruth Stone,

who's now in her 90s, but she's been a poet her entire life

ئەو ئێستا لە لە نەوەدەکاندایە، بەڵام ئەو هەموو ژیانی هەر شاعیر بوە

and she told me that when she was growing up in rural Virginia,

پێی گوتم کاتێک گەورە دەبووم لە گوندێکی ڤێرجینیا

she would be out working in the fields,

and she said she would feel and hear a poem

وە پێی گوتم هەست و ئیلهامی شیعرم

coming at her from over the landscape.

بۆ دەهات لە دیمەنە سروشتیەکانەوە

And she said it was like a thunderous train of air.

وە دەیگوت کە وەک شەمەندەفەرێک بووە لە هەوادا

And it would come barreling down at her over the landscape.

دەردەپەڕی بەرەو ڕوی لە دیمەنە سروشتیەکانەوە

هەستی دەکرد کە دێت بۆ لای، لەبەرئەوەی زەویەکە دەلەرێتەوە لە ژێر پێیەکانیدا

And she felt it coming, because it would shake the earth under her feet.

She knew that she had only one thing to do at that point,

ئەو دەیزانی پێویستە یەک شت بکات لەم خاڵەدا

and that was to, in her words, "run like hell."

ئەویش ئەوە بوو، لە ووشەکانیدا "بڕۆ وەک دۆزەخ"

And she would run like hell to the house

ئەو دەڕۆشت بۆ ماڵەکە وەک دۆزەخ

and she would be getting chased by this poem,

ئەم ڕاکردنەی بەدەست دەهێنا لەم شیعرەوە

هەموو شتەکە ئەوە بوو دەبوو پارچەیەک کاغەزی و پێنوسێکی دەست بکەوتایە

and the whole deal was that she had to get to a piece of paper and a pencil

بە خێراییەکی تەواو کاتێک کە دەلەرزی، وە نەیدەتوانی کۆی بکاتەوە

fast enough so that when it thundered through her, she could collect it

تاکو بینوسێت لەسەر کاغەزەکە

وە ئەو کاتانەش کە نەیدەتوانی بەخێراییەکی تەواو

and grab it on the page.

And other times she wouldn't be fast enough,

ڕابکات و ڕابکات و ڕابکات، دەگەیشتەوە ماڵەوە

so she'd be running and running, and she wouldn't get to the house

هۆنراوەکە دەڕوات ولەدەستی دەچوو

and the poem would barrel through her and she would miss it

دەیگوت ئەو بە بەردەوامی بەلای دیمەنە سروشتیەکاندا دەڕوات

and she said it would continue on across the landscape,

وە سەیریان دەکات تاکو بیانکات بە سیحرێکی تر

looking, as she put it "for another poet."

پاشان دواتر و لەم کاتانەدا

And then there were these times --

this is the piece I never forgot --

ئەمە ئەو پارچەیە یە کە هەرگیز لەبیریان ناکەم

she said that there were moments where she would almost miss it, right?

دەیگوت هەندێک جاریش ئەوانەم لەدەست چوە، وانیە؟

So, she's running to the house and she's looking for the paper

بۆیە ڕای دەکرد بۆ ماڵەوەو دەگەڕا بۆ پارچە کاغەزێک

تاکو ئەو پارچە شیعرەی بۆی هاتوە

and the poem passes through her,

and she grabs a pencil just as it's going through her,

پێنوسێکی هەڵدەگرت و ئەو ئیلهامەی بۆی دەهات

and then she said, it was like she would reach out with her other hand

دواتر وتی وەک ئەوە وابوو ئەگەر بگەشتایە بەدەستەکەی تری

دەیگرت

and she would catch it.

شیعرەکەی بە کلکی دەگرت

She would catch the poem by its tail,

یاخود بە پێچەوانەوە ڕای دەکێشا بەرەو لەشی

and she would pull it backwards into her body

as she was transcribing on the page.

ئەوکاتە دەینوسی لەسەر کاغەزەکە

And in these instances, the poem would come up on the page perfect and intact

لەم کاتانەدا، شیعرەکە بەتەواوی و بە ساغی دەچوە سەر کاغەزەکە

but backwards, from the last word to the first.

بەڵام بە پێچەوانەوە، لە کۆتاییەوە بۆ سەرەتاکەی

(Laughter)

پێکەنین

So when I heard that I was like -- that's uncanny,

کاتێک گوێم لەوە بوو ... ئەوە ناسروشتی و تەلسماوی بوو

that's exactly what my creative process is like.

کتومت وەک داهێنکاریەکەی من وابوو

(Laughter)

That's not at all what my creative process is -- I'm not the pipeline!

ئەوە هەموو پڕۆسەی داهێنانی من نیە... من هێڵی بۆری نیم

I'm a mule, and the way that I have to work

من هێسترێکم، ئەوە ئەو ڕێگەیە کەدەبێت ئیشی لەسەر بکەم

is I have to get up at the same time every day,

دەبێت هەموو ڕۆژێک لە هەمان کاتدا هەستم

ئارەق بکەمەوەو ئیش بکەم و توشی هەموو ئازارەکان ببمەوە

and sweat and labor and barrel through it really awkwardly.

بەڵام تەنانەت لە هێستریەکەشمدا

But even I, in my mulishness,

even I have brushed up against that thing, at times.

هەندێک جار دوورکەوتومەتەوە لەو شتە

And I would imagine that a lot of you have too.

باوەڕم وایە ئێوەش هەندێکتان دوور کەوتونەتەوە لەوەی کە هەتانە

You know, even I have had work or ideas come through me from a source

وەک دەزانن، تەنانەت پێویستە ئیش بکەم یان ئەو بیرۆکانەی بۆم دێت لە سەرچاوەیەکەوە

that I honestly cannot identify.

لە ڕاستیدا ناتوانم بیانناسمەوە

And what is that thing?

ئەو شتە چیە؟

And how are we to relate to it in a way that will not make us lose our minds,

چۆن دەتوانین بیبەستینەوە بەشێوەیەک کە مێشکمان لەدەست نەدەین

but, in fact, might actually keep us sane?

بەڵام لەڕاستیدا، لەوانەیە بەتەواوەتی بمانهێڵێتەوە؟

And for me, the best contemporary example that I have of how to do that

تایبەت بە من، باشترین نمونەی هاوچەرخ بۆ کردنی ئەوە

is the musician Tom Waits,

who I got to interview several years ago on a magazine assignment.

ئەو کەسەی چەندین جار چاوپێکەتنم لەگەڵ کردوە پێش چەندین ساڵ لە ئیشی گۆڤارێکدا

And we were talking about this,

دەربارەی ئەمە قسەمان کردوە

and you know, Tom, for most of his life, he was pretty much the embodiment

وەک دەزانن تۆم لە درێژایی ژیانیدا نمونەی تێگەشتن و شانازییە

of the tormented contemporary modern artist,

هونەرمەندێکی هاوچەرخی ئەشکەنجەدەرە

هەوڵی زاڵبون و ڕێکخستن و کۆنتڕۆڵکردن دەدات

trying to control and manage and dominate

these sort of uncontrollable creative impulses

لەم کۆمەڵە داهێنانەدا کە ناتوانرێت زالبین بەسەریدا

that were totally internalized.

ئەوە بوە بە بەشێک لە پەیڕەوی ناوخۆیی

But then he got older, he got calmer,

بەڵام دواتر پیر بوو، وە بێدەنگتر بوو

and one day he was driving down the freeway in Los Angeles,

ڕۆژێکیان کە شۆفێری دەکرد لەسەر شەقامە خێراکەی لۆس ئەنجلس پێی وتم

and this is when it all changed for him.

لە کاتێکدا کە هەموو شتێک گۆڕا بوو بۆ ئەو

And he's speeding along, and all of a sudden

لەو کاتەدا خێرابوو، بەشێوەیەکی زۆر کتوپڕ

he hears this little fragment of melody,

گوێی لە بەشێکی کەم لەم ئاوازە بوو

that comes into his head as inspiration often comes, elusive and tantalizing,

کەدێنە ناو مێشکیەوە وە زۆربەی جارەکان دوور لە بەدەست هێنان و خروشاندن

and he wants it, it's gorgeous,

ئەویش ئەوەی دەویست، وەک دەزانن ئەو زۆر گونجاوە

and he longs for it, but he has no way to get it.

ئەو ئەوەی دەوێت، بەڵام ناتوانێت دەستی بکەوێت

He doesn't have a piece of paper, or a pencil, or a tape recorder.

پارچەیەک کاغەزی پێنیە، هەرەوەها پێنوسیشی پێنیە

دەنگ تۆمارکەریشی پێنیە

So he starts to feel all of that old anxiety start to rise in him

لەبەرئەوە هەستی بە دڵە ڕاوکێیەکی کۆن دەکرد کە تووشی ببو

وەک لەدەستدانی ئەم شتە

like, "I'm going to lose this thing,

and I'll be be haunted by this song forever.

لەدوایدا دەڕۆمە ئەندێشەی ئەم گۆرانیەوە بۆ هەتا هەتایە

I'm not good enough, and I can't do it."

من زۆر باش نیم، ناتوانم ئەوە بکەم

And instead of panicking, he just stopped.

لەجیاتی ئەوەی ڕابکات، کەچی وەستا

He just stopped that whole mental process and he did something completely novel.

ئەو تەنها وەستابوو لە هەموو ئەو پڕۆسە ئەقڵیە

ئەو بەتەواوی شتێکی تازەی ئەنجامدا

He just looked up at the sky, and he said,

سەیری ئاسمانی کرد و وتی

"Excuse me, can you not see that I'm driving?"

بەیارمەتیت من نەبینیت کە لێدەخوڕم

(Laughter)

پێکەنین

"Do I look like I can write down a song right now?

ئایا من لەوە دەچم کە بتوانم گۆرانیەک بڵێم هەر ئێستا

If you really want to exist, come back at a more opportune moment

ئەگەر دەتەوێت بەتەواوی دەربچیت، دەبێت لە کاتێکی تردا بگەڕێتەوە

when I can take care of you.

کە بتاونم ئاگادارت بم

Otherwise, go bother somebody else today.

یان بڕۆ، ئەمڕۆ کەسێکی تر بێزار بکە

Go bother Leonard Cohen."

بڕۆ لیۆنارد کۆهین بێزار بکە

And his whole work process changed after that.

هەموو کارەکانی خۆی گۆڕی دوای ئەوە

Not the work, the work was still oftentimes as dark as ever.

کارەکە نا، کارەکە هەندێک کات وەک خۆی تاریک بوو

But the process, and the heavy anxiety around it

بەڵام پڕۆسەکە، وە قورسی و شپرزەیی دەورەیدا

was released when he took the genie, the genius out of him

کاتێک تێگەشتن جنۆکەکەیان لێدەرکرد

where it was causing nothing but trouble, and released it back where it came from,

هۆکاری هیچ شتێک نەبو بەڵام کێشە بوو، وە ئەوە جۆرێک بوو لەگەڕانەوەی بۆ شوێنی خۆی

وە تێگەشت لەوەی کە نابێت ئەمە ببێتە ئەشکەنجەیەکی ناخی

and realized that this didn't have to be this internalized, tormented thing.

لەوانەی ئەم جۆرە هاوبەشی پێکردنە سەیر بێت

It could be this peculiar, wondrous, bizarre collaboration,

kind of conversation between Tom and the strange, external thing

جۆرێک بوو لە گفتوگۆی نێوان تۆم و شتێکی دەرەکی نەناسراو

that was not quite Tom.

بەتەواوەتی ئەوە تۆم نەبوو

When I heard that story, it started to shift a little bit

بۆیە کە ئەم چیرۆکەم بیست هەستام بە گۆڕینی ئەو شێوە

the way that I worked too, and this idea already saved me once.

ئیش کردنەم، هەروەها جارێکیان منی ڕزگار کرد

It saved me when I was in the middle of writing "Eat, Pray, Love,"

بیرۆکەکە ئەوەیە کە منی ڕزگار کرد لە ناوەڕاستی نوسینی کتێبی، خواردن، نوێژ، خۆشەویستی

and I fell into one of those sort of pits of despair

هەستم بە جۆرە نائومێدیەک دەکرد

that we all fall into when we're working on something and it's not coming

ئەوەش لە کاتێکدا دەبێت کە دەتەوێت ئیشێک بکەیت و سەر ناگرێت

and you start to think this is going to be a disaster, the worst book ever written.

دەست دەکەیت بە بیرکردنەوە لەوەی کەئەمە کۆتای دێت بە کارەساتێک

وە هەست دەکەیت کە ئەمە دەبێت بە خراپترین کتێب کە تائێستا نوسیبێتت

Not just bad, but the worst book ever written.

تەنها خراپ نا، بەڵکو خراپتر لە خراپ

دەستم بەبیرکردنەوە کردبوو لەوەی پێویستە ئەم ئیشە بەجێبهێڵم

And I started to think I should just dump this project.

But then I remembered Tom talking to the open air

بەڵام لەو کاتەدا قسەکانی تۆمم بیرکەوتەوە کە باسی هەوای دەکرد

and I tried it.

وە هەوڵم بۆدا

So I just lifted my face up from the manuscript

هەوڵمدا دەموچاوم هەڵبگرم و لەسەرمەوە

and I directed my comments to an empty corner of the room.

وە گاڵتەم بکردایە بە سوچی ژوورە چۆڵەکە

And I said aloud, "Listen you, thing,

بەدەنگی بەرز بموتایە، تۆ گوێ بگرە شتەکە

you and I both know that if this book isn't brilliant

تۆو من هەردووکمان دەزانین ئەم کتێبە باش نیە

that is not entirely my fault, right?

ئەمەش بەتەواوەتی هەڵەی من نیە، وانیە؟

Because you can see that I am putting everything I have into this,

لەبەرئەوەی تۆ دەبینیت کە من هەموو شتێک بۆ ئەمە

I don't have any more than this.

وە لەوە زیاترم پێنیە

If you want it to be better, you've got to show up and do your part of the deal.

بۆیە ئەگەر بتەوێت باشی بکەیت، دەبێت دەربکەویت و بەشی خۆت بدەیت لەو ڕێککەوتنە

باشە، بەڵام ئەگەر نەیکەیت، دەزانیت چی، نەفرەتت لێبێت

But if you don't do that, you know what, the hell with it.

بەهەر شێوەیەک بێت من بەردەوام دەبم لە نوسین چونکە ئەمە ئیشەکەمە

I'm going to keep writing anyway because that's my job.

And I would please like the record to reflect today

وە دڵخۆشم بەم دەرکەوتنەی ئەمڕۆم

من بەشی خۆم نیشاندا لە ئیشەکە

that I showed up for my part of the job."

Because in the end it's like this, OK --

لە کۆتایدا وەک و ئەمە بوو، باشە

centuries ago in the deserts of North Africa,

پێش چەند سەدەیەک لە بیابانەکانی باشوری ئەفەریقا

people used to gather for these moonlight dances of sacred dance and music

خەڵک کۆدەبونەوە بۆ سەمای لەبەر ڕووناکی مانگەشەودا، کە جۆرە سەمایەکی پیرۆز بوو لەگەڵ مۆسیقا،

that would go on for hours and hours, until dawn.

کە بەردەوام دەبوو بۆ ماوەی چەند کاتژمێرێک تاکو بەرەبەیان

They were always magnificent, because the dancers were professionals

ئەوان هەمیشە جوان بوون، لەبەرئەوەی ئەوان سەماکەری پیشەیی بوون

and they were terrific, right?

ئەوان زۆر ناوازە بوون، وانیە؟

بەڵام هەموو جارێک ، کە زۆر دەگمەن بوو، شتێک ڕووی دەدا

But every once in a while, very rarely, something would happen,

and one of these performers would actually become transcendent.

یەکێک لە مۆسیقا ژەنەکان تێپەڕ دەبێت

And I know you know what I'm talking about,

دەزانم کە ئێوە دەزانن باسی چی دەکەم

because I know you've all seen, at some point in your life,

لەبەرئەوەی دەزانم هەمووتان بینیوتانە، لە هەندێک کاتی ژیانتانا، مۆسیقاأەنێکی لەم شێوەیە

a performance like this.

It was like time would stop,

ئەوە وەک ئەوە وایە کە کات دەوەستیت

and the dancer would sort of step through some kind of portal

سەماکەرەکە هەنگاو دەنێت و لە شێوە دەرگایەکەوە دەڕوات

ئەو هیچ شتێکی جیاواز ناکات لەوەی سەد شەو لەمەوپێش دەیکرد

and he wasn't doing anything different

than he had ever done, 1,000 nights before,

but everything would align.

بەڵام هەموو شتێک یەکلایی دەبێتەوە

And all of a sudden, he would no longer appear to be merely human.

لەپڕێکدا، ئیتر لەوە زیاتر وەک و ئادەمیزادێک دەرناکەوێت

ئەو ڕوناک دەبێت لە ناوەوە بۆ سەرەوە

He would be lit from within, and lit from below

and all lit up on fire with divinity.

وە لەسەرەوە بەرەو ئاگری ئیلاهی

And when this happened, back then,

ئەمەش کاتێک ڕوودەدات

people knew it for what it was, you know, they called it by its name.

کە خەڵکی زانیویانە ئەم شتە چیە، ئەوان ناویان لێناوە

They would put their hands together and they would start to chant,

دەستیان دەخەنە ناو دەستی یەکترەوە و هاوار دەکەن و دەڵێن

"Allah, Allah, Allah, God, God, God."

خودا، خودا، خودا، خودا، خودا، خودا

That's God, you know.

دەزانن، ئەوە خودایە

Curious historical footnote:

کۆتایی مێژویەکی سەیرە

when the Moors invaded southern Spain, they took this custom with them

کاتێک مورس باکوری ئیسپانیای داگیرکرد، ئەم نەریتەیان لێبردن

and the pronunciation changed over the centuries

وە شێوەی دەربڕینەکان گۆڕان لەو سەدەیانەدا

from "Allah, Allah, Allah," to "Olé, olé, olé,"

لە خودا، خودا، خودا بۆ ئۆلێ، ئۆلێ، ئۆلێ

which you still hear in bullfights and in flamenco dances.

کە تاکو ئێستا دەیبیستین لە مەیدانی زۆرانبازی گاکان و سەمای فلامینگۆ

In Spain, when a performer has done something impossible and magic,

لە ئیسپانیا، کاتێک سەماکەرێک شتێکی مەحاڵ و سییحریانە دەکات هاوار دەکەن و دەڵێن

"Allah, olé, olé, Allah, magnificent, bravo,"

خودا، ئۆلێ، ئۆلێ، خودا، نایابە، ئافەرین

incomprehensible, there it is -- a glimpse of God.

زۆر ئاڵۆزە، لەوێدا چاوپیاخشانی خودایی هەیە

Which is great, because we need that.

ئەو مەزنە، لەبەرئەوەی ئێمە پێویستمان بەوە هەیە

But, the tricky bit comes the next morning,

بەڵام قورسترین بەش بۆ بەیانی داهاتوو

for the dancer himself, when he wakes up and discovers

بۆ سەماکەرەکە خۆیەتی، کاتێک هەڵدەستێت

that it's Tuesday at 11 a.m., and he's no longer a glimpse of God.

بۆی دەردەکەوێت کاتژمێر (دە) ی بەیانی ڕۆژی سێشەمەیە و ئیتر لەوە زیاتر چاوپیاخشاندنی خوایی لەسەر نیە

He's just an aging mortal with really bad knees,

ئەو تەنها وەک گیانلەبەرێکی لەسەر ئەژنۆ کەوتوو دەردەکەوێت

and maybe he's never going to ascend to that height again.

لەوانەیە جارێکی تر نەگاتەوە بەو ئاستە بەرزە جارێکی تر

And maybe nobody will ever chant God's name again as he spins,

لەوانەیە کە کەس جارێکی تر ناوی خوا نەهێنێتەوە کە دەخوڵیتەوە

and what is he then to do with the rest of his life?

دەبێت ئەو چی بکات لە دوای ئەمەوە بۆ کۆتایی ژیانی؟

This is hard.

ئەمە زۆر ڕەقە

This is one of the most painful reconciliations to make

ئەمە یەکێکە لە هەرە بە ئازارترین ئاشتەوایی

in a creative life.

لە ژیانی داهێنانکاریت دا

But maybe it doesn't have to be quite so full of anguish

بەڵام لەوانەیە پڕنەبێت لە خەفەت و یاسا

if you never happened to believe, in the first place,

ئەگەر هەرگیز باوەرت بەوە نەبوبێت لەیەکەم شوێندا

that the most extraordinary aspects of your being came from you.

زۆربەی لایەنە نائاساییەکان لە خۆوە بۆ تۆ دێن

But maybe if you just believed that they were on loan to you

بەڵام تەنها ئەگەر باوەڕت وابێت کە ئەوانە دیارین بۆ تۆ

from some unimaginable source for some exquisite portion of your life

لە سەرچاوەیەکەوە کە کە ناتوانرێت بیری لێبکرێتەوە تا بکرێت بە بەشێکی جوان لە ژیانتا

to be passed along when you're finished,

بۆ ئەوەی تێپەڕ ببێت کاتێک تۆ ژیان بەجێدەهێڵیت و تاکو بڕوات بۆ کەسێکی تر

with somebody else.

And, you know, if we think about it this way, it starts to change everything.

ئەگەر بەم شێوەیە بیر بکەینەوە هەموو شتێک دەگۆڕێت

This is how I've started to think,

بەم شێوەیە دەستم کرد بە بیرکرنەوە

and this is certainly how I've been thinking in the last few months

بەدڵنیاییەوە بەم شێوەیە بیرم کردەوە لەچەند مانگی ڕابردودا

as I've been working on the book that will soon be published,

لە کاتێکدا ئیشم لەسەر کتێبەکەم دەکرد بەمزوانە بڵاو دەکرێتەوە

as the dangerously, frighteningly over-anticipated follow up

کە بەشێوەیەکی مەترسیدار و ترسناک دواکەوت

to my freakish success.

وە بوە هۆی سەرکەوتنە سەیرەکەم

And what I have to sort of keep telling myself

ئەوەی پێویستە لەسەرم دەبێت خۆم قسەی لەبارەوە بکەم

when I get really psyched out about that is don't be afraid.

لە کاتێکدا کە دەترسم لەو شتە

کە نابێت بترسیت

Don't be daunted. Just do your job.

ئامادە مەبە

تەنها ئیشەکەی خۆت بکە

Continue to show up for your piece of it, whatever that might be.

بەردەوام بە لە نیشاندانی بەشێک کە لەسەرتە بە هەر ڕێگەیەک بێت

If your job is to dance, do your dance.

ئەگەر لەسەرت بوو سەمابکەیت، ئەوا سەما بکە

If the divine, cockeyed genius assigned to your case

decides to let some sort of wonderment be glimpsed, for just one moment

دەبێت بڕیار بدەیت واز لە هەندێک شتی سەیر بهێنیت کە ئاماژەی پێدەدرێت تەنها بۆ یەک جار

through your efforts, then "Olé!"

لە ڕێگەی هەوڵ و کۆششەکانتەوە، پاشان، ئۆلێ

ئەگەر نەبوو، بەهەر شێوەیەک بوو سەماکەت ئەنجام بدە

And if not, do your dance anyhow.

And "Olé!" to you, nonetheless.

لەگەڵ ئەوەشدا ئۆلێ بۆ ئێوە

I believe this and I feel that we must teach it.
