And so, needless to say, over those years

I've had a chance to look at education reform

from a lot of perspectives.

Some of those reforms have been good.

Some of them have been not so good.

And we know why kids drop out.

We know why kids don't learn.

It's either poverty, low attendance,

We know why.

But one of the things that we never discuss

Well, I said to her,

"You know, kids don't learn from people they don't like."

She said, "That's just a bunch of hooey."

And I said to her,

"Well, your year is going to be long and arduous, dear."

Needless to say, it was.

Some people think that you can either have it in you to build a relationship,

I think Stephen Covey had the right idea.

He said you ought to just throw in a few simple things,

like seeking first to understand,

You ever thought about that?

Tell a kid you're sorry, they're in shock.

I taught a lesson once on ratios.

I'm not real good with math, but I was working on it.

(Laughter)

وام زانى کە وانەکە هەمووى هەڵەیە. زۆر داواى لێبوردن دەکەم.”

And I got back and looked at that teacher edition.

I'd taught the whole lesson wrong.

وتیان،“ئاساییە، خاتوون. پێرسۆن.

زۆر جۆش و خرۆش بوى, وازمان هێنا کە بڕۆیت.”

(Laughter)

So I came back to class the next day and I said,

"Look, guys, I need to apologize.

I taught the whole lesson wrong. I'm so sorry."

پۆلم هەبوو کە ئاستیان نزم بوو،

They said, "That's okay, Ms. Pierson.

You were so excited, we just let you go."

لە ڕووى ئەکادیمییەوە کەمبۆوەوە، گریام.

I have had classes that were so low,

so academically deficient, that I cried.

I wondered, "How am I going to take this group,

in nine months,

from where they are to where they need to be?

And it was difficult, it was awfully hard.

How do I raise the self-esteem of a child

چونکە باشترین مامۆستام

and his academic achievement at the same time?

ئێوەش باشترین قوتابین،

ئێمەیان پێکەوە دانا

One year I came up with a bright idea.

بتوانبن بە کەسانى تریش نیشان بدەین کە چۆن بیکەن.”

I told all my students,

"You were chosen to be in my class

قوتابیەک وتى، “بەڕاستى؟”

because I am the best teacher

وتم، “بەڕاستمە. بە پۆلەکانى تر نیشان بدەین

and you are the best students,

they put us all together

چۆن ئەنجامى بدەن، کاتێک لە هۆڵەکە چوینە خوارەوە،

so we could show everybody else how to do it."

خەڵک تێبینى ئێمە دەکەن، ئێوە دەنگە دەنگ مەکەن.

One of the students said, "Really?"

تەنها دەبێت بیکەیت.”

(Laughter)

وتارێکم پێیاندا بۆ وتن:

I said, "Really. We have to show the other classes

“من کەسێکم.

کاتێک هاتم کەسێک بووم.

how to do it, so when we walk down the hall,

کەسێکى باشتر دەبم کاتێک دەڕۆم.

من بە توانام، من بە هێزم.

people will notice us, so you can't make noise.

شایەنى ئەو پەروەردەم کە لێرە بەدەستى دەهێنم.

You just have to strut."

(Laughter)

شتانێکم هەیە بۆ ئەنجام دانى, خەڵک سەرسام بن،

And I gave them a saying to say:

شوێن بۆ سەردان کردنى.”

"I am somebody.

I was somebody when I came.

ئەوان وتیان، “بەڵێ!”

I'll be a better somebody when I leave.

(پێکەنین)

I am powerful, and I am strong.

دەڵەیت ئەمە بەسە

دەست پێدەکات بۆ ئەوەى بەشێک بێت لە تۆ.

I deserve the education that I get here.

I have things to do, people to impress,

(چەپڵە)

and places to go."

And they said, "Yeah!"

(Laughter)

کویزێکم پێ کردن, ٢٠ پرسیار.

You say it long enough,

it starts to be a part of you.

قوتابیەک ١٨ پرسیارى بەجێ هێشت.

(Applause)

I gave a quiz, 20 questions.

A student missed 18.

وتم، “بەڵێ.”

وتى، “کەواتە بۆچى دەم و چاوێکى پێکەنیناویت لەسەر داناوە؟”

I put a "+2" on his paper and a big smiley face.

(Laughter)

وتم، “چونکە نزیکى لە سەرکەوتن.

He said, "Ms. Pierson, is this an F?"

تۆ دووت هێنا. هەموویت لەدەست نەدا.”

(پێکەنین)

I said, "Yes."

وتم، “کاتێک دووبارە سەیرى دەکەینەوە، ناتەوێت باشتر بیت؟”

(Laughter)

He said, "Then why'd you put a smiley face?"

وتى، ” بەڵێ، خاتوون، دەتوانم باشتر ئەنجامى بدەم.”

I said, "Because you're on a roll.

دەزانیت، “-١٨ هەموو ژیانت دەهێنێتە دەرەوە.

You got two right. You didn't miss them all."

“٢”, “زۆر خراپ نیم.”

(Laughter)

I said, "And when we review this, won't you do better?"

He said, "Yes, ma'am, I can do better."

بۆ ساڵانێک، سەیرى دایکم کرد کە پشووى بۆ پێداچوونەوە وەردەگرت،

You see, "-18" sucks all the life out of you.

"+2" said, "I ain't all bad."

بڕۆ بۆ سەردانەکانى ماڵەوە لە پاش نیوەڕۆ،

کڵاو و فڵچە بکڕن و کەرە باوەکان و تراقەکان

For years, I watched my mother take the time at recess to review,

دانانى مێز بۆ ئەو منداڵانەى پێویستیان بە خواردن بوو،

خاولى و سابوونى منداڵان کە بۆنیان خۆش نەبوو.

سەیرکە, قوڕسە منداڵەکان بۆنى ناخۆش فێربکەین.

go on home visits in the afternoon,

buy combs and brushes and peanut butter and crackers

دەکرێت منداڵەکان دڵرەق.

to put in her desk drawer for kids that needed to eat,

بۆیە لەسەر مێزەکەى ئەو شتانەى کۆکردەوە،

and a washcloth and some soap for the kids who didn't smell so good.

ساڵانێک دواتر، خانەنشین کرا،

See, it's hard to teach kids who stink.

بینیم هەندێک لە هەمان منداڵەکان بێنە ناوەوە

(Laughter)

بە ئەوى وت، “دەزانیت، خاتوون. والکەر،

And kids can be cruel.

جیاوازیت لە ژیانى من دروست کرد.

And so she kept those things in her desk,

کاریگەرى لەسەرم هەبێت.

and years later, after she retired,

وات کرد هەست بکەم کە کەسێکم،

کاتێک زانیم، لە سەرەتاوە, وانەبووم.

I watched some of those same kids come through

تەنها دەمەوێت ببینى کە بومە بە چى.”

and say to her, "You know, Ms. Walker,

you made a difference in my life.

And I want you to just see what I've become."

And when my mama died two years ago at 92,

هیچ کاتێک بزر نابن.

there were so many former students at her funeral,

ئایا دەتوانین پەیوەندى زیاترمان هەبێت؟

it brought tears to my eyes, not because she was gone,

بە دڵنیایەوە.

ئایا هەموو منداڵەکانت خۆش دەوێت؟ بە دڵنیایەوە نەخێر.

but because she left a legacy of relationships

that could never disappear.

دەزانیت کە مێشکى منداڵەکانت هەرگیز غیاب نابن.

Can we stand to have more relationships?

Absolutely.

هەرگیز

Will you like all your children? Of course not.

هەموویانت خۆش ناوێت،

کەسە بەهێزەکان بۆ هۆکارێک دەردەکەون.

(Laughter)

And you know your toughest kids are never absent.

ئەمە پەیوەندیە. ئەمە پەیوەندى خۆشەویستیە.

(Laughter)

Never.

You won't like them all,

and the tough ones show up for a reason.

مامۆستاکان دەبن بە ئەکترێکى ناوازە،

It's the connection. It's the relationships.

دەین بۆ سەر کار کاتێک حەزى پێ ناکەین،

گوێ لە سیاسەت دەگرین کە هیچ مانایەکى نیە،

So teachers become great actors and great actresses,

بە هەرحاڵ فێردەبین، چونکە ئەمەیە کە دەیکەین.

and we come to work when we don't feel like it,

and we're listening to policy that doesn't make sense,

چۆن جیهانمان بەهێز دەبێت

and we teach anyway.

ئەگەر منداڵمان هەبێت کە سەرکێشى بکەن،

We teach anyway, because that's what we do.

کە ناترسن بۆ بیرکردنەوە،

ئەوانەى پاڵەوانیان هەیە؟

Teaching and learning should bring joy.

هەموو منداڵێک پاڵەوانێکى شایەنە،

How powerful would our world be

گەورەیەک کە هەرگیز دەست بەرداریان نابن،

ئەوەى لە هێزى پەیوەندى تێدەبگات،

if we had kids who were not afraid to take risks,

جەخت لەوە دەکاتەوە ئەوان باشتر دەبن کەە دەتوانن ببن.

who were not afraid to think,

and who had a champion?

Every child deserves a champion,

ئایا ئەک کارە قوڕسە؟ تۆ بێتکا.

ئەى خوایە، تۆ بێتکاى.

an adult who will never give up on them,

بەڵام ئەمە مەحاڵە.

who understands the power of connection,

and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.

دەتوانین ئەمە بکەین. پەروەردەکارین.

لەدایک بووین بۆ ئەوەى جیاوازى بکەین.

Is this job tough? You betcha.

زۆر سوپاستان دەکەم.

Oh God, you betcha.

But it is not impossible.

We can do this. We're educators.

We're born to make a difference.
