I have spent my entire life

هەموو تەمەنم یان

either at the schoolhouse, on the way to the schoolhouse,

لە قوتابخانە بەسەر بردووە، یان لە ڕێگای قوتابخانە،

or talking about what happens in the schoolhouse.

Both my parents were educators,

my maternal grandparents were educators,

and for the past 40 years, I've done the same thing.

And so, needless to say, over those years

I've had a chance to look at education reform

from a lot of perspectives.

Some of those reforms have been good.

Some of them have been not so good.

And we know why kids drop out.

We know why kids don't learn.

It's either poverty, low attendance,

negative peer influences...

We know why.

دەزانین بۆچی.

But one of the things that we never discuss

بەڵام یەکێک لەو شتانەی کە قەت باسی ناکەین

or we rarely discuss

is the value and importance of human connection.

Relationships.

James Comer says that no significant learning

can occur without a significant relationship.

Everyone in this room has been affected by a teacher or an adult.

For years, I have watched people teach.

I have looked at the best and I've looked at some of the worst.

A colleague said to me one time,

"They don't pay me to like the kids.

They pay me to teach a lesson.

بۆ ئەوە پارەم دەدەنێ وانەکە بڵێمەوە

The kids should learn it.

منداڵەکان پێویستە فێربنن

I should teach it, they should learn it,

من دەبێت وانەکە بڵێمەوە، و ئەوانیش پێویستە فێربن،

Case closed."

هەر ئەوەندە."

Well, I said to her,

منیش پێم وت،

"You know, kids don't learn from people they don't like."

"دەزانیت چۆنە، منداڵان هیچ لەوانەوە فێرنابن کە خۆشیان ناوێن."

(Laughter)

She said, "That's just a bunch of hooey."

ئینجا وتی، "ئەوە تەنیا قسەی پڕووپووچە."

And I said to her,

منیش پێم وت،

"Well, your year is going to be long and arduous, dear."

"باشە ساڵەکەت درێژ و سەخت دەبێت ئازیزم."

Needless to say, it was.

پێویست ناکا ئەمەش بڵێم.

Some people think that you can either have it in you to build a relationship,

هەندێک کەس وا بیردەکەنەوە یان لە ناختدایە بتوانیت پەیوەندی بنیات بنێیت،

or you don't.

یان لە ناختدا نییە.

I think Stephen Covey had the right idea.

پێموابێت ستیڤن کۆڤی بیرۆکە درووستەکەی هەبووە.

He said you ought to just throw in a few simple things,

وتی کە پێویستە لە چەند شتێکی سادەوە دەستپێبکەیت،

like seeking first to understand,

وەک ئەوەی هەوڵی تێگەشتن بدەیت،

as opposed to being understood.

بە پێچەوانەی ئەوەی بتەوێ لێتتێبگەن.

Simple things, like apologizing.

You ever thought about that?

Tell a kid you're sorry, they're in shock.

I taught a lesson once on ratios.

جارێکیان وانەیەکم دەوتەوە لەسەر ڕێژەکان.

I'm not real good with math, but I was working on it.

(Laughter)

And I got back and looked at that teacher edition.

ئینجا هاتمەوە و سەیری چاپی وانەی مامۆستایەکم کرد.

I'd taught the whole lesson wrong.

هەموو وانەکەم بە هەڵە وتبووەوە.

So I came back to class the next day and I said,

بۆیە ڕۆژی دواتر هاتمەوە بۆ پۆلەکە و وتم،

"Look, guys, I need to apologize.

"سەیرکەن، مناڵینە، پێویستە داوای لێبوردن بکەم.

I taught the whole lesson wrong. I'm so sorry."

هەموو وانەکەم بە هەڵە پێوتوونەتەوە. زۆر داوای لێبوردن دەکەم."

They said, "That's okay, Ms. Pierson.

وتیان، "کێشە نییە، مامۆستا پیرسن.

You were so excited, we just let you go."

زۆر بە گەرمییەوە وانەت دەوتەوە، حەزمان کرد بەردەوامبیت."

I have had classes that were so low,

هەندێک پۆلم هەبووە زۆر خراپ بوون،

so academically deficient, that I cried.

ئاستی زانیارییان ئەوەندە کەم بووە، گریاوم

I wondered, "How am I going to take this group,

وتوومە، "باشە چۆن ئەم پۆلە

in nine months,

لە نۆ مانگا،

from where they are to where they need to be?

لەو ئاستەوە کە ئێستا تێیدان بەرەو ئاستی پێویست بەرم؟

And it was difficult, it was awfully hard.

زۆر قوریش بوو، لە ڕادەبەدەر.

How do I raise the self-esteem of a child

چۆن بڕوابەخۆبوونی منداڵێک و

and his academic achievement at the same time?

لە هەمان کاتدا ئاستی ئەکادیمی منداڵەکەم زیاد بکردایە؟

One year I came up with a bright idea.

ساڵێکیان بیرۆکەیەکی زۆر باشم بۆهات.

I told all my students,

بە خوێندکارەکانم وت،

"You were chosen to be in my class

"ئێوە بۆیە هەڵبژێردراون بۆ ئەم پۆلە

because I am the best teacher

چونکە من باشترین مامۆستام و

and you are the best students,

ئێوەش باشترین خوێندکارن،

they put us all together

هەموومانیان کۆکردۆتەوە

so we could show everybody else how to do it."

بۆ ئەوەی نیشانی هەمووانی بدەین چۆن سەرکەوتوو بین."

One of the students said, "Really?"

یەکێک لە خوێندکارەکان وتی، "بەڕاست؟"

(Laughter)

I said, "Really. We have to show the other classes

وتم، "بەڕاستمە. پێویستە نیشانی پۆلەکانی تری بدەین

how to do it, so when we walk down the hall,

چەند سەرکەوتوو ئەبین، بۆ ئەوەی کە بە ڕاڕەوەکاندا ڕۆشتین

people will notice us, so you can't make noise.

هەمووان سەیرمان بکەن، نەک پێویست بکات دەنگ درووست بکەین.

You just have to strut."

تەنیا بە لەخۆڕازیبوونەوە بڕۆین."

(Laughter)

And I gave them a saying to say:

ئینجا وتەیەکم پێوتن بۆ ئەوەی بیڵێنەوە:

"I am somebody.

من کەسێکم.

I was somebody when I came.

کەسێک بووم کە هاتم.

I'll be a better somebody when I leave.

کەسێکی باشتر دەبم دوای ڕۆشتنم.

I am powerful, and I am strong.

من بەهێزم، و من بەتوانام.

I deserve the education that I get here.

شایەنی ئەو فێرکردنەم کە لێرە پێم دەدرێت.

I have things to do, people to impress,

شتی زۆر هەیە بیکەم، و خەڵکی زۆر هەیە سەرنجیان ڕاکێشم، و

and places to go."

شوێنی زۆر هەیە بچم بۆی."

And they said, "Yeah!"

ئینجا وتیان. "بەڵێ!"

(Laughter)

You say it long enough,

ئەوەندە زۆر دەیڵێیتەوە،

it starts to be a part of you.

ئیتر دەبێت بە بەشێک لەخۆت.

I gave a quiz, 20 questions.

تاقیکردنەوەیەکی کورتم کردن، ٢٠ پرسیار بوو.

A student missed 18.

خوێندکارێک ١٨ی نەزانیبوو

I put a "+2" on his paper and a big smiley face.

منیش "٢+" م خستە سەر کاغەزەکەی لەگەڵ دەم و چاوێکی زەردەخەنە.

(Laughter)

He said, "Ms. Pierson, is this an F?"

ئینجا وتی، "مامۆستا پیرسن، ئەمە کەوتنە؟"

I said, "Yes."

وتم، "بەڵێ."

(Laughter)

He said, "Then why'd you put a smiley face?"

ئینجا وتی، "باشە کەواتە بۆچی دەم و چاوی زەردەخەنەت خستووەتە سەر؟"

I said, "Because you're on a roll.

منیش وتم، "چونکە لە باشتر بووندایت.

You got two right. You didn't miss them all."

دووانت ڕاست وەڵامداوەتەوە. لە هەموویا هەڵەت نەکردووە."

(Laughter)

I said, "And when we review this, won't you do better?"

ئینجا وتم، "کە بەسەر ئەمەدا چووینەوە، باشتر نابیت تیایدا؟"

He said, "Yes, ma'am, I can do better."

وتی، "بەڵێ مامۆستا، دەتوانم باشتر بم."

You see, "-18" sucks all the life out of you.

دەزانن، "١٨-" یەکسەر هیچ هیوایەکت ناهێڵێت.

"+2" said, "I ain't all bad."

"٢+" ئەوەندە خراپ نابێت.

For years, I watched my mother take the time at recess to review,

بۆ چەندین ساڵ، ئاگام لە دایکم بووە کاتی پشووی وەردەگرت بۆ پیاچوونەوە،

go on home visits in the afternoon,

دوای نیوەڕوان بە سەردانی ماڵان دەڕۆشت،

buy combs and brushes and peanut butter and crackers

فڵچە و شانەی دەکڕی و هەروەها کەرە و پسکیت

to put in her desk drawer for kids that needed to eat,

بۆ ئەوەی بیخاتە چەکمەجەکەیەوە بۆ منداڵەکانی برسیان دەبوو، و

and a washcloth and some soap for the kids who didn't smell so good.

جل و سابوونیش بۆ منداڵەکانی بۆنی خۆشیان لێوە نەدەهات.

See, it's hard to teach kids who stink.

قورسە ئەو منداڵانە فێربکەیت کە بۆنی ناخۆشیان لێدێت.

(Laughter)

And kids can be cruel.

منداڵانیش دەکرێت قسەیان ناخۆشبێت.

And so she kept those things in her desk,

بۆیە ئەو شتانەی لە چەکمەجەکەدا هەڵدەگرت، و

and years later, after she retired,

چەند ساڵێک دواتر، دوای خانەنشین بوونی،

I watched some of those same kids come through

هەندێک لە هەمان ئەو منداڵانەم دەبینی دەهاتن و

and say to her, "You know, Ms. Walker,

پێیان دەوت، "دەزانی مامۆستا ۆڵکەر،

you made a difference in my life.

جیاوازییەکت درووست کرد لە ژیانمدا.

You made it work for me.

واتلێکردم سەرکەوتوو بم.

You made me feel like I was somebody,

واتلێکردم هەست بکەم کە کەسێکم،

when I knew, at the bottom, I wasn't.

کە لە ناخەوە دەمزانی کە کەس نیم.

And I want you to just see what I've become."

ئینجا دەمەوێ ئێستا ببینیت بوو بە چۆن کەسێک."

And when my mama died two years ago at 92,

دوو ساڵ لەمەوبەریش کە دایکم لە تەمەنی ٩٢ ساڵیدا مرد،

there were so many former students at her funeral,

چەندین خوێندکاری پێشتری خۆی لە پرسەکەیدا بوون،

it brought tears to my eyes, not because she was gone,

چاوەکانی پڕ کردم لە فرمێسک، نەک لەبەر ئەوەی بەجێی هێشتین،

but because she left a legacy of relationships

بەڵکو لەبەر ئەوەی میراتییەک لە پەیوەندی جوانی بەجێهێشت

that could never disappear.

کە قەت لەناوناچێت.

Can we stand to have more relationships?

دەتوانین پەیوەندی زیاتر بنیات بنێین؟

Absolutely.

بەدڵنیاییەوە.

Will you like all your children? Of course not.

هەموو منداڵەکانت خۆش دەوێت؟ بێگومان نەخێر.

(Laughter)

And you know your toughest kids are never absent.

دەشزانیت کە خۆڕاگرترین منداڵەکانی پۆلەکەت قەت ئامادەنەبوونیان نابێت.

(Laughter)

Never.

قەت.

You won't like them all,

هەموویان بەدڵ نابێت، و

and the tough ones show up for a reason.

خۆڕاگرەکان لەبەر هۆکارێک یەن.

It's the connection. It's the relationships.

پەیوەندییەکەیە. پێکەوە ئاشنابوونەکەیە.

هەتا هەموو منداڵەکانیشتان خۆش نەوێت قەت ناتوانن وەک پێویست فێربن

So teachers become great actors and great actresses,

مامۆستاکان دەبن بە ئەکتەر و ژنە ئەکتەری گەورە، و

and we come to work when we don't feel like it,

کە حەزمان پێی نابێت نایەین بۆ سەر ئیش، و

and we're listening to policy that doesn't make sense,

گوێ لە هەندێک پەیڕەو دەگرین کە هیچ ڕێیان تێناچێت، و

and we teach anyway.

هەر وانەکەش دەڵێینەوە.

We teach anyway, because that's what we do.

هەرچۆنێک بێت دەیڵێینەوە، چونکە ئەوە بە ئیشی خۆمان دەزانین.

Teaching and learning should bring joy.

وانەوتنەوە و فێرکردن پێویستە شادی دەهێنێت.

How powerful would our world be

جیهانەکەمان چەندێک بەهێز دەبێت

if we had kids who were not afraid to take risks,

ئەگەر منداڵەکانمان نەترسن لەوەی مەترسی نەگرنە بەر،

who were not afraid to think,

لە بیرکردنەوە نەترسن، و

and who had a champion?

پاڵەوانێکیان هەبێت؟

Every child deserves a champion,

هەموو منداڵێک شایەنی ئەوەیە پاڵەوانێکی هەبێت،

an adult who will never give up on them,

گەورەیەک کە قەت کۆڵ نەیات لەسەریان،

who understands the power of connection,

کە لە هێزی پەیوەندی تێبگات،

and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.

سووربێت لەسەر ئەوەی کە دەتوانن ببن بە باشترین کەس.

Is this job tough? You betcha.

ئەم کارە قوورسە؟ بێگومان

Oh God, you betcha.

ئای خوایە، بێگومان قورسە.

But it is not impossible.

بەڵام مەحاڵ نییە.

We can do this. We're educators.

دەتوانین ئەمە بکەین. ئێمە مامۆستاین.

We're born to make a difference.

بۆ ئەوە کراوین جیاوازی درووست بکەین.
