मेरी सारी उम्र बीती है

I have spent my entire life

either at the schoolhouse, on the way to the schoolhouse,

या तो स्कूल में, या स्कूल आते-जाते

or talking about what happens in the schoolhouse.

(Laughter)

Both my parents were educators,

my maternal grandparents were educators,

and for the past 40 years, I've done the same thing.

And so, needless to say, over those years

I've had a chance to look at education reform

from a lot of perspectives.

Some of those reforms have been good.

Some of them have been not so good.

And we know why kids drop out.

We know why kids don't learn.

It's either poverty, low attendance,

या तो गरीबी, या स्कूल नहीं आ पाना,

negative peer influences...

नकारात्मक संगी, साथी। ये सब पता है हमें।

We know why.

But one of the things that we never discuss

or we rarely discuss

is the value and importance of human connection.

Relationships.

James Comer says that no significant learning

can occur without a significant relationship.

George Washington Carver says all learning

is understanding relationships.

Everyone in this room has been affected by a teacher or an adult.

इस कमरे में बैठे सब लोगों पर असर डाला है

For years, I have watched people teach.

कई सालो तक, मैने लोगों को पढाते देखा है।

I have looked at the best and I've looked at some of the worst.

मैने अच्छे से अच्छे और खराब से खराब शिक्षकों को देखा है।

A colleague said to me one time,

मेरे एक सह-कर्मी ने मुझसे कहा,

"They don't pay me to like the kids.

"मुझे बच्चों को पसंद करने के लिये पैसे नहीं मिलते।

मुझे पढाने के पैसे मिलते हैं।

They pay me to teach a lesson.

The kids should learn it.

बच्चों को सीखना चाहिये।

I should teach it, they should learn it,

मुझे पढाना चाहिये। उन्हें पढना चाहिये। बात खत्म।"

Case closed."

Well, I said to her,

मैने उस से कहा,

"पता है, बच्चे उन लोगों से नहीं सीखते जिन्हें वो पसंद नहीं करते।"

"You know, kids don't learn from people they don't like."

(Laughter)

She said, "That's just a bunch of hooey."

उसने कहा, "ये कोरी बकवास है।"

And I said to her,

और मैने उस से कहा, "ह्म्म्म,, , तुम्हारा साल काफ़ी लम्बा

"Well, your year is going to be long and arduous, dear."

और कठिन होने वाल है।"

Needless to say, it was.

और वैसा ही हुआ। कुछ लोगों को लगता है कि

Some people think that you can either have it in you to build a relationship,

तुम या तो रिश्ते बना सकते हो

or you don't.

या नहीं बना सकते।

मेरे ख्याल से स्टीफ़न कोवी का कहना सही है।

I think Stephen Covey had the right idea.

He said you ought to just throw in a few simple things,

उन्होंने कहा था कि बस कुछ चीजें करनी होंगी,

like seeking first to understand,

जैसे पहले दूसरों को समझो

as opposed to being understood.

बजाय दूसरों द्वार समझे जाने के,

Simple things, like apologizing.

You ever thought about that?

कभी सोचा आपने इस के बारे में?

Tell a kid you're sorry, they're in shock.

किसी बच्चे से सॉरी बोल दो, बिचारे झटका खा जाते हैं।

(Laughter)

I taught a lesson once on ratios.

एक बार मैने अनुपात का एक पाठ पढाया।

I'm not real good with math, but I was working on it.

मेरी गणित कुछ खास नही है, पर मैं सीख रही थी।

(Laughter)

And I got back and looked at that teacher edition.

और मैने वापस जा कर उस का शिक्षक-संस्करण देखा।

I'd taught the whole lesson wrong.

मैने पूरा पाठ गलत पढा दिया था। (ठहाका)

(Laughter)

So I came back to class the next day and I said,

तो मै अगले दिन क्लास में गयी, और मैने कहा,

"Look, guys, I need to apologize.

"देखो, मुझे माफ़ी माँगनी है।

I taught the whole lesson wrong. I'm so sorry."

मैने पूरा पाठ गलत पढा दिया। आय एम सॉरी।"

They said, "That's okay, Ms. Pierson.

उन्होने कहा, "कोई बात नही, मिस पियरसन।

You were so excited, we just let you go."

आप इतनी खुश थीं, तो हमने आप को रोका नहीं।"

I have had classes that were so low,

मुझे ऐसी क्लासे पढाने को मिली हैं,

इतनी पिछडी हुई कि मुझे रोना आ गया।

so academically deficient, that I cried.

I wondered, "How am I going to take this group,

मै सोचती थी, कि इस वर्ग को कैसे ले जाऊँगी

in nine months,

नौ महीनों में

from where they are to where they need to be?

यहाँ से जहाँ इन्हें होना चाहिये?

And it was difficult, it was awfully hard.

और ये बहुत कठिन था। बेहद कठिन।

किसी बच्चे का स्वाभिमान बढाना

How do I raise the self-esteem of a child

and his academic achievement at the same time?

और उसकी पढाई सुधारना एक ही साथ कैसे होगा?

One year I came up with a bright idea.

एक साल मुझे एक विचार आया।

I told all my students,

मैने अपने सारे विद्यार्थीयों से कहा,

"You were chosen to be in my class

"तुम्हें मेरी क्लास के लिये खास चुना गया है

because I am the best teacher

क्योंकि मैं सबसे अच्छी शिक्षक हूँ

and you are the best students,

और तुम सब से अच्छे विद्यार्थी,

they put us all together

उन्होंने हमें साथ रख दिया है

so we could show everybody else how to do it."

जिस से हम सब को दिखा सकें कि पढाई कैसे होती है।"

एक विद्यार्थी ने कहा, "सच मे?"

One of the students said, "Really?"

(Laughter)

I said, "Really. We have to show the other classes

मैने कहा, "हाँ, हमें दूसरी क्लासों को दिखाना है

how to do it, so when we walk down the hall,

कि कैसे पढते है, तो जब हम हॉल से गुज़रें,

तो लोग हमें देखें, और इसलिये तुम लोग हल्ला गुल्ला नहीं कर सकते।

people will notice us, so you can't make noise.

You just have to strut."

And I gave them a saying to say:

"I am somebody.

I was somebody when I came.

I deserve the education that I get here.

I have things to do, people to impress,

मुझे काम करना है, लोगों पर अपनी छाप छोडनी है,

and places to go."

और आगे बढना है।"

And they said, "Yeah!"

और उन्होने कहा, "हाँ!"

You say it long enough,

अगर आप बार बार कहें,

it starts to be a part of you.

तो वो आपका हिस्सा बनन जाता है।

I gave a quiz, 20 questions.

A student missed 18.

एक बच्चे ने १८ गलत जवाब दिये।

I put a "+2" on his paper and a big smiley face.

मैने उस के पेपेर पर +२ लिखा और एक बडा सा स्माइली बनाया।

(Laughter)

He said, "Ms. Pierson, is this an F?"

उसने कहा, "मिस पियरसन, मैं फ़ेल हुआ हूँ न?"

I said, "Yes."

मैने कहा, "हाँ।"

(Laughter)

He said, "Then why'd you put a smiley face?"

उसने कहा, "तो आपने ये मुस्कराता चेहरा क्यों बनाया?"

I said, "Because you're on a roll.

मैने कहा, "क्योकि तुम बहुत बढिया कर रहे हो।

You got two right. You didn't miss them all."

तुम्हारे पूरे दो सवाल सही है। सारे के सारे गलत नहीं है।"

(Laughter)

I said, "And when we review this, won't you do better?"

मैने कहा, "और जब हम इसे दोबारा करेंगे,

तो तुम बेहतर करोगे न?"

He said, "Yes, ma'am, I can do better."

उसने कहा, "हाँ मैम, बिल्कुल मैं बेहतर करूँगा।"

You see, "-18" sucks all the life out of you.

देखिये, "- १८" देख कर आपकी सारी हिम्मत ख्त्म हो जायेगी।

"+2" said, "I ain't all bad."

"+२" आपसे कहता है, "इतना भी बुरा नहीं है।"

For years, I watched my mother take the time at recess to review,

कई साल तक मैने अपनी माँ

को इंटरवेल में काम करते देखा,

दोपहर में घरों मे विज़िट करते देखा,

go on home visits in the afternoon,

buy combs and brushes and peanut butter and crackers

कंघी और ब्रश और पीनट बटर और बिस्कुट खरीदते देखा

to put in her desk drawer for kids that needed to eat,

अपने डेस्क में रखते हुए उन बच्चों के लिये जिन्हें ज़रूरत होती,

and a washcloth and some soap for the kids who didn't smell so good.

और एक तौलिया और कुछ साबुन उन के लिये जिनसे बदबू आ रही होती थी।

See, it's hard to teach kids who stink.

आखिर, बदबू फ़ैलाते बच्चों को पढाना आसान नहीं।

(Laughter)

And kids can be cruel.

और बच्चे बहुत क्रूर हो सकते हैं।

And so she kept those things in her desk,

तो इसलिये वो ये सारी चीजें अपने डेस्क में रखती थीं,

and years later, after she retired,

और कई साल बाद, उनके रेटायरमेंट के बाद,

I watched some of those same kids come through

मैने उन मे से कुछ बच्चों को वापस आ कर

and say to her, "You know, Ms. Walker,

उनसे कहते सुना, "आपको पता नहीं, मिस वाकर,

you made a difference in my life.

आप ने मेरे जीवन में कितना बडा बदलाव लाया।

आपके चलते ही मेरा कुछ हो सका।

You made it work for me.

You made me feel like I was somebody,

when I knew, at the bottom, I wasn't.

जबकि मुझे अंदर अंदर यकीन था कि, मैं कुछ भी नही था।

And I want you to just see what I've become."

और मैं चाहता हूँ कि आप देखें कि मैं क्या बन गया हूँ।"

And when my mama died two years ago at 92,

और ९२ वर्ष की उम्र में, दो साल पहले, जब माँ गुज़री,

there were so many former students at her funeral,

तो उनके बहुत सारे विद्यार्थी उनके अंतिम संस्कार पर पहुँचे,

मेरी आँखों मे आँसू थे इसलिये नहीं कि वो चली गयी थीं,

it brought tears to my eyes, not because she was gone,

but because she left a legacy of relationships

मगर इसलिये कि रिश्तों का इतना बडी विरासत वो छोड गयी थीं

that could never disappear.

जो कभी ख्त्म नहीं होगी।

Can we stand to have more relationships?

क्या हम रिश्तों पर और ध्यान दे सकते हैं? बिल्कुल।

Absolutely.

Will you like all your children? Of course not.

क्या आपको अपने सारे विद्यार्थी पसंद आयेंगे? बिल्कुल भी नहीं।

(Laughter)

और सबसे बिगडैल विद्यार्थी कभी एब्सेंट भी नहीं होते।

And you know your toughest kids are never absent.

(Laughter)

Never.

कभी भी नहीं। और आप उन सब को पसंद भी नहीं करेंगे

You won't like them all,

and the tough ones show up for a reason.

और बिगडैल वाले आते ही खास वजह से हैं।

It's the connection. It's the relationships.

रिश्ते ही सब हैं। जुडाव से ही सब है।

और जब कि आप उन्हें नापसंद करेंगे,

अंदर की बात ये है कि उन्हें कभी ये पता नहीं लगेगा।

So teachers become great actors and great actresses,

तो शिक्षकों महान एक्टर भी बन जाते हैं

and we come to work when we don't feel like it,

और हम तब भी क्लास जाते हैं जब हमारा बिल्कुल मन नहीं होता,

and we're listening to policy that doesn't make sense,

और हम ऐसी नीतियों से जूझते हैं जो बिल्कुल ही निरर्थक होती हैं,

and we teach anyway.

मगर हम फिर भी पढाते हैं।

We teach anyway, because that's what we do.

हम फिर भी पढाते रहते हैं, क्योंकि हमारा वही काम है।

Teaching and learning should bring joy.

पढना-पढाना खुशी देने वाला होना चाहिये।

How powerful would our world be

हमारी दुनिया कितनी बेहतर हो सकती है

if we had kids who were not afraid to take risks,

अगर हमारे बच्चे जोखिम से न डरें,

who were not afraid to think,

सोचने से पीछे न हटें,

and who had a champion?

और जिन के पास कोई ध्यान देने वाला हो?

Every child deserves a champion,

हर बच्चे को इसका हक है,

an adult who will never give up on them,

ऐसा कोई जो कभी उन्हें अकेला न छोडे,

who understands the power of connection,

जो रिश्तों की अहमियत समझे,

and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.

और उन्हें आगे बढने और बेहतर होने के लिये प्रोत्साहित करे।

Is this job tough? You betcha.

क्या ये कठिन काम है? बिल्कुल, हे भगवान, बहुत कठिन!

Oh God, you betcha.

But it is not impossible.

मगर ये असंभव नहीं है।

We can do this. We're educators.

हम ये कर सकते हैं। हम शिक्षक हैं।

We're born to make a difference.

हम दुनिया को बदलने के लिये ही जन्मे हैं।
