For me they normally happen, these career crises,

I'm mentioning all this because I think this is not merely a personal problem;

but I think we live in an age when our lives are regularly punctuated

It's perhaps easier now than ever before to make a good living.

It's perhaps harder than ever before

to stay calm, to be free of career anxiety.

I want to look now, if I may, at some of the reasons

why we might be feeling anxiety about our careers.

Why we might be victims of these career crises,

One of the reasons why we might be suffering

is that we are surrounded by snobs.

In a way, I've got some bad news,

particularly to anybody who's come to Oxford from abroad.

There's a real problem with snobbery,

because sometimes people from outside the U.K.

The bad news is that's not true.

Snobbery is a global phenomenon; we are a global organization,

this is a global phenomenon.

What is a snob?

A snob is anybody who takes a small part of you,

and uses that to come to a complete vision of who you are.

That is snobbery.

The dominant kind of snobbery that exists nowadays is job snobbery.

You encounter it within minutes at a party, when you get asked

According to how you answer that question,

people are either incredibly delighted to see you,

or look at their watch and make their excuses.

Now, the opposite of a snob is your mother.

Not necessarily your mother, or indeed mine,

but, as it were, the ideal mother,

somebody who doesn't care about your achievements.

Unfortunately, most people are not our mothers.

Most people make a strict correlation between how much time,

that will be strictly defined by our position in the social hierarchy.

And that's a lot of the reason why we care so much about our careers

and indeed start caring so much about material goods.

You know, we're often told that we live in very materialistic times,

I don't think we are particularly materialistic.

I think we live in a society which has simply pegged certain emotional rewards

It's not the material goods we want; it's the rewards we want.

It's a new way of looking at luxury goods.

The next time you see somebody driving a Ferrari, don't think,

"This is somebody who's greedy."

Think, "This is somebody who is incredibly vulnerable and in need of love."

Feel sympathy, rather than contempt.

There are other reasons --

There are other reasons why it's perhaps harder now to feel calm than ever before.

အရင်ကလို စိတ်တည်ငြိမ်ဖို့ဆိုတာ။

One of these, and it's paradoxical,

because it's linked to something that's rather nice,

is the hope we all have for our careers.

Never before have expectations been so high

about what human beings can achieve with their lifespan.

We're told, from many sources, that anyone can achieve anything.

We've done away with the caste system,

we are now in a system where anyone can rise to any position they please.

Along with that is a kind of spirit of equality;

we're all basically equal.

There are no strictly defined hierarchies.

There is one really big problem with this,

and that problem is envy.

Envy, it's a real taboo to mention envy,

but if there's one dominant emotion in modern society, that is envy.

And it's linked to the spirit of equality.

Let me explain.

I think it would be very unusual for anyone here, or anyone watching,

ကျွန်တော်ထင်ပါတယ်။ အခုဒီမှာရှိနေတဲ့ ဘယ်သူမဆို၊ ကျွန်တော့်ကိုကြည့်ရှုနေတဲ့ ဘယ်သူမဆိုဟာ

to be envious of the Queen of England.

Even though she is much richer than any of you are,

the reason why we don't envy her is because she's too weird.

We can't relate to her, she speaks in a funny way,

The closer two people are -- in age, in background,

in the process of identification -- the more there's a danger of envy,

which is incidentally why none of you should ever go to a school reunion,

The problem of modern society is it turns the whole world into a school.

Everybody's wearing jeans, everybody's the same.

And yet, they're not.

So there's a spirit of equality combined with deep inequality,

which can make for a very stressful situation.

But the point is, it doesn't feel that way.

It's made to feel, by magazines and other media outlets,

The consequences of this problem make themselves felt in bookshops.

ပြီးတော့ ဒီပြဿနာရဲ့ နောက်ဆက်တွဲကိုတော့ စာအုပ်ဆိုင်မှာ ရှင်းရလိမ့်မယ်။

When you go to a large bookshop and look at the self-help sections,

ခင်ဗျား စာအုပ်ဆိုင်အကြီးကြီးကိုသွား၊ ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကိုယ် ကယ်တင်နည်း ဆိုတဲ့ ကဏ္ဍကိုရှာ၊

as I sometimes do --

ကျွန်တော်လုပ်လေ့ရှိသလိုမျိုးပေါ့။

if you analyze self-help books produced in the world today,

တကယ်လို့ ခင်ဗျား အဲဒီ အခုခေတ်ထုတ် ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကိုယ် ကယ်တင်နည်း စာအုပ်တွေကို သေချာလေ့လာကြည့်ရင်

နှစ်မျိုးနှစ်စားရှိတာကို တွေ့ရလိမ့်မယ်။

there are basically two kinds.

The first kind tells you, "You can do it! You can make it! Anything's possible!"

ပထမ အမျိုးအစားက ဒီလို "သင် လုပ်နိုင်တယ်။ သင် ဖြစ်အောင်လုပ်နိုင်တယ်။ ဘာမဆိုဖြစ်နိုင်တယ်"လို့ပြောမယ်။

နောက်တမျိုးကတော့ ခင်ဗျားကို ဒီလိုဖြစ်ရင်ဒီလိုနေနိုင်အောင် ကြိုးစားပါလို့ပြောမယ်။ ဘယ်လိုဖြစ်ရင်လည်းဆိုတော့

The other kind tells you how to cope with what we politely call "low self-esteem,"

ယဉ်ယဉ်ကျေးကျေးပြောရရင် "ရှံူးနိမ့်အောက်ကျတဲ့ စိတ်ဘဝင်"ရှိနေရင်၊

or impolitely call, "feeling very bad about yourself."

There's a real correlation

တကယ့်ကို အမှန်အကန် တူယှဉ်တွဲနေထိုင်မှု ဆိုတာရှိတယ်။

between a society that tells people that they can do anything,

တကယ့် တူယှဉ်တွဲခြင်းဆိုတာ လူ့အဖွဲ့အစည်းတရပ်က လူတွေကို သင်တို့ဘာမဆိုဖြစ်အောင်လုပ်နိုင်တယ် ဆိုတာနဲ့

and the existence of low self-esteem.

စိတ်ဓာတ်နိမ့်ကျအားငယ်မှုနဲ့ တွဲယှဉ်နေထိုင်ခြင်းမျိုးပဲ ဖြစ်တယ်။

So that's another way in which something quite positive can have a nasty kickback.

အဲဒီတော့ ဒါဘာကိုပြောလည်းဆိုရင် အကောင်းဖက်ကိုသန်းတဲ့ အရာတခုမှာ

ဆိုးညစ်တဲ့ တွန်းပြန်မှုတခုရှိတယ် ဆိုတာပါပဲ။

There is another reason why we might be feeling more anxious --

နောက်တချက် ရှိသေးတယ်။ ကျွန်တော်တို့ ဘာ့ကြောင့်

about our careers, about our status in the world today, than ever before.

ကျွန်တော်တို့ရဲ့ အလုပ်အကိုင်တွေ၊ ရာထူးဌာနတွေနဲ့ ပတ်သက်လို့ အရင်ကထက် စိတ်ဖိစီးမှု ပိုများတတ်ကြသလည်း ဆိုတာပါပဲ။

And it's, again, linked to something nice.

ပြီးတော့ ထပ်ပြောရမယ်ဆိုရင် ဒါဟာ ကောင်းတဲ့အချက်တခုနဲ့ ဆက်နွယ်နေလို့ပါပဲ။

And that nice thing is called meritocracy.

အဲဒီ ကောင်းတဲ့အချက်ဆိုတာဘာလည်းဆိုရင် ဆုပေးစနစ်ဖြစ်ပါတယ်။

Everybody, all politicians on Left and Right,

လူတိုင်းသာမက လက်ဝဲ လက်ယျာနိုင်ငံရေးသမားအားလုံးဟာ

agree that meritocracy is a great thing,

ဆုပေးစနစ်ဟာ တကယ့်ကို ကောင်းတဲ့အရာပဲလို့ သဘောတူညီကြပါတယ်။

and we should all be trying to make our societies really, really meritocratic.

ကျွန်တော်တို့တွေဟာ ကိုယ့်အဖွဲ့အစည်းတွေကို ဆုပေးစနစ်ဖြစ်အောင် ကြိုးစားသင့်ပါတယ်။

In other words -- what is a meritocratic society?

တနည်းအားဖြင့်ဆိုရင် ဆုပေးစနစ်ကျင့်သုံးတဲ့ အဖွဲ့အစည်းဟာ ဘာလည်းဆိုရင်

A meritocratic society is one in which, if you've got talent and energy and skill,

ဆုပေးစနစ်ကျင့်သုံးတဲ့ အဖွဲ့အစည်းဆိုတာ

ခင်ဗျားမှာ ပင်ကိုယ်အစွမ်းသတ္တိရယ်၊ အားအင်ရယ်၊ အရည်အချင်းရယ် ရှိမယ်ဆိုရင်

you will get to the top, nothing should hold you back.

ခင်ဗျားဟာ ထိပ်ဆုံးကို ရောက်ကိုရောက်လိမ့်မယ်။ ဘယ်အရာကမှ သင့်ကို မတားဆီးနိုင်ဘူး။

It's a beautiful idea.

ဒါဟာ သိပ်ကိုလှပတဲ့ အတွေးအခေါ်တခုပဲနော်။ ပြဿနာက

The problem is, if you really believe in a society

ခင်ဗျား ဒီစနစ်နဲ့အဖွဲ့အစည်းကို တကယ်ယုံကြည်မယ်ဆိုရင်

where those who merit to get to the top, get to the top,

တော်တဲ့သူက ချီးမြောက်ခံရလို့ ထိပ်ရောက်မယ်လို့ ခင်ဗျားယုံကြည်တယ်။

you'll also, by implication, and in a far more nasty way,

ဒါဆိုရင် သွယ်ဝိုက်သောအားဖြင့် ညစ်စုတ်စုတ်အတွေးနဲ့ ပြောရရင်

believe in a society where those who deserve to get to the bottom

ခင်ဗျားဟာ ဒီအဖွဲ့အစည်းမှာ မကြိုးစားပဲ လေလွင့်နေတဲ့သူ၊ မအောင်မြင်တဲ့သူတွေဟာလည်း

also get to the bottom and stay there.

အမြဲတမ်း လူ့အောက်ကျနေမယ်၊ ဘယ်တော့မှာ ထိပ်ရောက်မှာ မဟုတ်တော့ဘူးလို့ ယုံကြည်သလို ဖြစ်သွားလိမ့်မယ်။

In other words, your position in life comes to seem not accidental,

နောက်တမျိုးပြောရရင်၊ ခင်ဗျား ဒီဘဝကိုရောက်လာတာ မတော်တဆ မဟုတ်တော့ဘူး

but merited and deserved.

ခင်ဗျားဟာ ဘဝမှာ အောင်မြင်မှုတွေကို ရကိုရယူရမယ်၊ ခင်ဗျားဟာ ထိုက်ထိုက်တန်တန် ဒီဘဝကို ရတာလို့ဆိုလိုတာ ဖြစ်သွားတယ်။

And that makes failure seem much more crushing.

ဒီလို ယူဆတာဟာ ရှံူးနိမ့်မှုအပေါ်ထားတဲ့ သဘောထားကို ပိုပြီး နက်နဲစေတော့တာပါပဲ။

You know, in the Middle Ages, in England,

ခင်ဗျားသိလား။ အင်္ဂလန်မှာ ခေတ်လယ်ကာလတုန်းကပေါ့

when you met a very poor person,

ခင်ဗျားဟာ လူဆင်းရဲတယောက်ကို တွေ့လိုက်ပြီဆိုရင်

that person would be described as an "unfortunate" --

အဲဒီလူကို ကံမကောင်းတဲ့သူလို့ သတ်မှတ်လေ့ရှိတယ်။

literally, somebody who had not been blessed by fortune, an unfortunate.

စာစကားအရတော့ ဒီလူဟာ ကုသိုလ်ထူးနဲ့လွဲခဲ့တဲ့ ကံမွဲသူတယောက်ပေါ့။

Nowadays, particularly in the United States,

အခုခေတ်မှာတော့ ဒီလို မဟုတ်ဘူး။ အထူးသဖြင့် အမေရိကားမှာ

if you meet someone at the bottom of society,

ခင်ဗျားဟာ လူဆင်းရဲအတန်းအစားကို တွေ့လိုက်ပြီဆိုတာနဲ့

they may unkindly be described as a "loser."

ဒီလူတွေကို လူဖျင်းလူညံ့ အဖြစ်သတ်မှတ်လိုက်တော့တယ်။

There's a real difference between an unfortunate and a loser,

စဉ်းစားကြည့်နော်။ ကံမွဲတယောက်နဲ့ လူညံ့တယောက်ရဲ့ အဓိပ္ပါယ်သတ်မှတ်ချက်က တကယ့်ကို မတူဘူးနော်။

and that shows 400 years of evolution in society

ဒါဟာ ဘာကိုပြောသလည်းဆိုရင် လူ့အဖွဲ့အစည်းရဲ့ အနှစ် ၄၀၀ အတွင်း တဖြည်းဖြည်း ပြောင်းလဲလာမှု

and our belief in who is responsible for our lives.

နဲ့ ငါတို့ရဲ့ဘဝအတွက် ဘယ်သူ့မှာ တာဝန်ရှိသလည်းဆိုတာရဲ့ အတွေးအခေါ် ယုံကြည်ချက်ပဲ။

It's no longer the gods, it's us. We're in the driving seat.

ထာဝရဘုရားဆိုတာလည်း မရှိတော့ဘူး၊ ငါတိုိ့ဆိုတာပဲရှိတာ။ ငါတို့ဟာ ငါတို့ဘဝကားကို မောင်းနှင်နေတဲ့ ဒရိုင်ဘာတွေပဲ။

That's exhilarating if you're doing well,

ခင်ဗျားဟာ အောင်မြင်နေတဲ့သူဆိုရင်တော့ ဒီအချက်အပေါ်မှာ ခင်ဗျား ပီတိတွေဖြာနေလိမ့်မယ်။

and very crushing if you're not.

ခင်ဗျားဟာ ရှံူးနိမ့်နေတဲ့သူဆိုရင်တော့ ခင်ဗျား စိတ်မကောင်းတွေ ဖြစ်နေလိမ့်မယ်နော်။

It leads, in the worst cases --

လူမှုဆက်ဆံရေးဗေဒပညာရှင်တယောက်ဖြစ်တဲ့

in the analysis of a sociologist like Emil Durkheim --

Emil Durkheim ရဲ့ သုံးသပ်ချက်အရဆိုရင် ဒီအချက်တွေဟာ ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကိုယ် သက်သေမှုတွေကို ဖြစ်စေနိုင်တယ်တဲ့။

it leads to increased rates of suicide.

There are more suicides in developed, individualistic countries

ဖွံ့ဖြိုးတိုးတက်တဲ့ နိုင်ငံကြီးတွေရဲ့ ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကိုယ်သက်သေမှုနှုန်းဟာ

than in any other part of the world.

တခြားနိုင်ငံတွေနဲ့ ယှဉ်ရင် ပိုများပါတယ်။

And some of the reason for that

ဒီလို ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကိုယ် သက်သေမှုပိုများရခြင်း နောက်တချက်ကတော့ လူတွေဟာ သူတို့ရဲ့ အခြေအနေအပေါ်မှာ

is that people take what happens to them extremely personally --

ငါမကောင်းလို့၊ ငါ့ကြောင့်ဆိုတဲ့ အစွန်းရောက် ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကိုယ် စွပ်စွဲအပြစ်တင်တာတွေကြောင့်ပါပဲ။

they own their success, but they also own their failure.

ဒီလိုလူစားတွေဟာ သူတို့ရဲ့ အောင်မြင်မှုအတွက် ဂုဏ်ယူဝံ့ကြွားတတ်ကြသလို သူတို့ရဲ့ ရှံူးနိမ့်မှုအတွက်လည်း ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကိုယ် အပြစ်တင်တတ်ကြပါတယ်။

Is there any relief from some of these pressures

ဒီလို ဖိစီးမှုမျိုးတွေကနေ လွတ်မြောက်မှု မရှိနိုင်တော့ဘူးလား

that I've been outlining?

ကျွန်တော် ချပြခဲ့သမျှတွေထဲကပေါ့လို့ မေးရင်

I think there is.

ရှိတယ်လို့ ကျွန်တော်ထင်ပါတယ်။ အဲဒီထဲက တချို့တလေကို ကြည့်ကြရအောင်။

I just want to turn to a few of them.

Let's take meritocracy.

ဆုပေးစနစ်ကို ကြည့်ကြရအောင်

This idea that everybody deserves to get where they get to,

လူတိုင်းဟာ သူတို့နဲ့ထိုက်တန်တဲ့နေရာကို ရကြတယ်ဆိုတဲ့ အတွေးအခေါ်

I think it's a crazy idea, completely crazy.

ဒါဟာ တကယ်ကို ရူးတဲ့အတွေးအခေါ်လို့ ကျွန်တော်ထင်တယ်၊ လုံးဝကို ရူးတာပါပဲ။

I will support any politician of Left and Right,

ကျွန်တော့ လက်ဝဲလက်ယျာ နိုင်ငံရေးသမားအားလုံးကို ထောက်ခံမယ်။

with any halfway-decent meritocratic idea;

ဒါပေမယ့် သူတို့တွေရဲ့ ဆုပေးစနစ်ဟာ မယုတ်မလွန်တဲ့ အတွေးအခေါ်တရပ် ဖြစ်ရမယ်။

I am a meritocrat in that sense.

ကျွန်တော်ဟာ မယုတ်မလွန် ဆုပေးစနစ်ကိုပဲ ယုံတဲ့သူပါ။

But I think it's insane to believe

ဒါပေမယ့် ကျွန်တော်ထင်ပါတယ်။

that we will ever make a society that is genuinely meritocratic;

စစ်မှန်ဖြောင့်မတ်တဲ့ ဆုပေးစနစ်ကို တည်ဆောက်ဖို့ ဆိုတာကလည်း သိပ်မလွယ်လှပါဘူး။ မဖြစ်နိုင်တဲ့ အိပ်မက်တခုပါ။

it's an impossible dream.

The idea that we will make a society where literally everybody is graded,

ပြောချင်တာကတော့ ကျွန်တော်တို့တွေ တည်ဆောက်မယ့် လူ့အဖွဲ့အစည်းမှာ

လူတိုင်းကို အမှတ်ပေးစနစ်နဲ့ထားမယ်။

the good at the top, bad at the bottom,

တော်တဲ့သူ ထိပ်ကိုရောက်မယ်၊ ည့ံတဲ့သူ အောက်ကိုရောက်မယ်၊

exactly done as it should be, is impossible.

ပြီးတော့ ဒါကို တိတိကျကျ လိုက်နာမယ် ဆိုတာဟာ တကယ်တော့ မဖြစ်နိုင်ပါဘူး။

There are simply too many random factors:

ရိုးရိုးလေးပဲ တွေးကြည့်ပါ။ တခြား ထည့်တွက်စဉ်းစားရမယ့် အချက်တွေ အများကြီးပါ။

accidents, accidents of birth,

မတော်တဆ ထိခိုက်မှု၊ မတော်တဆ မွေးဖွားမှုကစလို့

accidents of things dropping on people's heads, illnesses, etc.

မတော်တဆ ခေါင်းပေါ်ကို ပစ္စည်းပြုတ်ကျတာ၊ ဖျားနာတာ အထိ အမျိုးစုံပဲပေါ့။

We will never get to grade them,

ဒီလိုပုံစံမျိုးနည်း ကျွန်တော်တို့ သူတို့တွေကို ဘယ်လို အမှတ်ပေးကြမှာလည်း။

never get to grade people as they should.

ဘယ်လိုမှ မတော်တဆ ထိခိုက်နစ်နာတဲ့သူတွေ အပေါ် သာမာန်လူတွေနဲ့ တန်းတူ အမှတ်ပေးလို့ မရနိုင်ပါဘူး။

I'm drawn to a lovely quote by St. Augustine in "The City of God,"

ကျွန်တော်လေ St. Augustine ရဲ့ "ဘုရားရဲ့မြို့တော်" ထဲက စာတပိုဒ်ကို ရွတ်ပြချင်တယ်။

where he says, "It's a sin to judge any man by his post."

သူက ဘာပြောသလည်းဆိုရင် "လူတယောက်ကို သူ့ရဲ့အနေအထားကို ကြည့်ပြီး သတ်မှတ်ဆက်ဆံတာဟာ အပြစ်တခုပါ"တဲ့။

In modern English that would mean

ခေတ်သစ်မော်ဒန် စကားနဲ့ ပြောရမယ်ဆိုရင်

it's a sin to come to any view of who you should talk to,

သင်ဟာ သင်နဲ့ပြောဆိုဆက်ဆံနေသူ တဦးအပေါ်မှာ

သူရဲ့ အလုပ်အကိုင် စီးပွားရေး အခြေအနေကို ကြည့်ပြီး ပေါင်းသင်းဆက်ဆံ နေရင်ဖြင့် သင်ဟာ အပြစ်ရှိသူတဦးပါတဲ့။

dependent on their business card.

It's not the post that should count.

ဘာလုပ်ဘာကိုင်သလည်း ဆိုတာဟာ ထည့်သွင်းစဉ်းစားရမယ့်အရာ မဟုတ်ပါဘူး။

According to St. Augustine, only God can really put everybody in their place;

St. Augustine က ဘာပြောသလည်းဆိုရင်

ထာဝရဘုရားသခင်သာ လူတိုင်းကို သူ့နေရာနဲ့သူရှိစေနိုင်တာပါ တဲ့။

he's going to do that on the Day of Judgment,

သူဟာ လူတိုင်းကို သူ့နေရာနဲ့သူ ရှိဖို့ အဆုံးအဖြတ်နေ့မှာ ဆုံးဖြတ်မှာပါတဲ့။

with angels and trumpets, and the skies will open.

အဲဒီ အချိန်မှာ နတ်သားနတ်သမီးတွေ၊ နှဲတွေ အစုံနဲ့ ကောင်းကင်ကြီးကို တခမ်းတနားဖွင့်ကြမှာပါတဲ့။

Insane idea, if you're a secularist person, like me.

ခင်ဗျားဟာ ကျွန်တော့်လို ဘာသာရေးခုတုန်းလုပ်မှုကို မယုံကြည်သူတယောက်ဖြစ်ခဲ့ရင် တော်တော်ရူးတဲ့ အတွေးအခေါ်ပဲလို့ ထင်လိမ့်မယ်။

But something very valuable in that idea, nevertheless.

ဒါပေမယ့် အဲဒီ အတွေးခေါ်ထဲမှာ အဖိုးမဖြတ်နိုင်တဲ့ အချက်တခု ရှိနေတယ်။

တနည်းပြောရရင် သူများတွေကို အကဲမဖြတ်ခင်မှာ ခင်ဗျား စောင့်ကြည့်သင့်တယ်။

In other words, hold your horses when you're coming to judge people.

You don't necessarily know what someone's true value is.

ခင်ဗျားဟာ လူတယောက်ရဲ့ တကယ့်တန်ဖိုးကို လောက်လောက်လားလား မသိနိုင်ဘူး။

That is an unknown part of them,

ဒါဟာ ဘယ်သူမှ မသိနိုင်တဲ့ အချက်ပဲ။

and we shouldn't behave as though it is known.

ဒါကို ခင်ဗျားက လူတယောက်ရဲ့ တကယ့်တန်ဖိုးကို သိသယောင်ယောင် မလုပ်သင့်ဘူး။

There is another source of solace and comfort for all this.

နောက်ထပ် နှစ်သိမ့်အားပေးတဲ့ တနေရာရှိသေးတယ်။

When we think about failing in life, when we think about failure,

ကျွန်တော်တို့ဟာ ဘဝမှာ ရှံူးနိမ့်စရာတွေကို တွေးလိုက်တိုင်း

one of the reasons why we fear failing

ဘာကြောင့် ရှံုးနိမ့်မှာကို ကြောက်သလည်းဆိုတဲ့ အကြောင်းတရပ်ဟာ

is not just a loss of income, a loss of status.

၀င်ငွေကိုဆုံးရှံူးမှာ ရာထူးနေရာပျောက်မှာကြောင့်တင် မဟုတ်ပါဘူး။

What we fear is the judgment and ridicule of others.

ကျွန်တော်တို့ကြောက်တာဟာ သူများတွေရဲ့ အကဲဖြတ်ရှံု့ချမှုကိုပါ။ ဒါဟာလည်း တကယ်ရှိပါတယ်။

And it exists.

The number one organ of ridicule, nowadays, is the newspaper.

ခင်ဗျားသိလား။ သူတပါးကိုလှောင်ပြောင်တဲ့ နေရာမှာ နံပါတ်တစ်ပြေးနေတာဟာ

အခုခေတ်မှာတော့ သတင်းစာပဲ။

If you open the newspaper any day of the week,

ခင်ဗျား ဘယ်အချိန်မဆို သတင်းစာကို ကောက်လှန်လိုက်ပါ။

it's full of people who've messed up their lives.

ရှုပ်ထွေးပွေလီတဲ့ ဘဝပေါင်းစုံနဲ့ လူတွေအကြောင်းကို ခင်ဗျားဖတ်ရလိမ့်မယ်။

They've slept with the wrong person, taken the wrong substance,

ဟော ဘယ်သူတို့ဖြင့် ဘယ်သူနဲ့ မှားယွင်းကြပြန်ပြီ။ ဘယ်သူကတော့ ဘာအမှားကို ကျူးလွန်လိုက်ပြန်ပြီ။

passed the wrong piece of legislation --

ဘယ်သူကတော့ ဘယ်လို မတရားမှုကို ဘယ်လိုကြိုးကိုင်လိုက်ပြန်ပြီ စသဖြင့်ပေါ့။ ဘာပဲဖြစ်ဖြစ်လေ

whatever it is, and then are fit for ridicule.

နောက်ဆုံးတော့ ဒီ အမှားတွေဟာ လှောင်ပြောင်ခံစရာတွေ ဖြစ်လာတာပေါ့။

In other words, they have failed. And they are described as "losers."

တနည်းအားဖြင့် ပြောရရင် သူတို့ ရှံူးနိမ့်ကြသည်ပေါ့။ ပြီးတော့ သူတို့ဟာ လူညံ့တွေ ဖြစ်ကြသည်ပေါ့။

Now, is there any alternative to this?

ကဲ ဒါကို တခြားဘယ်နည်းလမ်းနဲ့ ဖြေရှင်းကြမတုန်း။

I think the Western tradition shows us one glorious alternative, which is tragedy.

ကျွန်တော်ထင်တာက အနောက်တိုင်းယဉ်ကျေးမှုမှာ သိသာထင်ရှားတဲ့ တခြားနည်းလမ်းတခုရှိတယ်။

အဲဒါဘာလည်းဆိုရင် ၀မ်းနည်းစရာဖြစ်စဉ်ပဲ။

Tragic art, as it developed in the theaters of ancient Greece,

in the fifth century B.C., was essentially an art form

devoted to tracing how people fail,

and also according them a level of sympathy,

which ordinary life would not necessarily accord them.

A few years ago, I was thinking about this,

and I went to "The Sunday Sport,"

And I went to talk to them

about certain of the great tragedies of Western art.

I wanted to see how they would seize the bare bones of certain stories,

if they came in as a news item at the news desk on a Saturday afternoon.

I mentioned Othello; they'd not heard of it but were fascinated.

I gave them the plotline of Madame Bovary.

And then my favorite --

they really do have a kind of genius of their own, these guys --

In a way, if you like, at one end of the spectrum of sympathy,

you've got the tabloid newspaper.

At the other end of the spectrum, you've got tragedy and tragic art.

သူရဲ့ တခြားတဖက်က ရောင်စဉ်တန်းမှာတော့ သူတပါးတို့ရဲ့ ၀မ်းနည်းကြေကွဲဆုံးရှံုးမှုတွေနဲ့အတူ အဲဒါတွေရဲ့ အနုပညာပါ ရှိနေမှာပါ။

And I suppose I'm arguing that we should learn a little bit

about what's happening in tragic art.

It would be insane to call Hamlet a loser.

ဟမ်မလတ်ဆိုတဲ့ ဇာတ်ကောင်ကို လူညံ့လို့ ပြောတာဟာ ရူးတာပါပဲ။

He is not a loser, though he has lost.

သူဟာ ရှံူးနိမ့်သွားခဲ့ပေမယ့် လူညံ့တယောက် မဟုတ်ခဲ့ပါဘူး။

And I think that is the message of tragedy to us,

and why it's so very, very important, I think.

The other thing about modern society and why it causes this anxiety,

We are the first society to be living in a world

where we don't worship anything other than ourselves.

We think very highly of ourselves, and so we should;

we've put people on the Moon, done all sorts of extraordinary things.

And so we tend to worship ourselves. Our heroes are human heroes.

That's a very new situation.

Most other societies have had, right at their center,

the worship of something transcendent: a god, a spirit, a natural force,

the universe, whatever it is -- something else that is being worshiped.

We've slightly lost the habit of doing that,

ကျွန်တော်တို့မှာတော့ ဒီလိုအကျင့်တွေမရှိတော့ပါဘူး။

which is, I think, why we're particularly drawn to nature.

ဒါကြောင့်လည်း ကျွန်တော်တို့ဟာ သဘာဝတရားစတင် နားလည် သဘောပေါက်လာအောင် ကြိုးစားလာကြတာပါ။

ဒါဟာလည်း ကျွန်တော်တို့ရဲ့ ကျန်းမာရေးအတွက် မဟုတ်ပါဘူး။ ဒါပေမယ့် တခါတလေတော့လည်း အဲဒါအတွက်လို့ ထင်စရာရှိပါတယ်။

Not for the sake of our health, though it's often presented that way,

သဘာဝတရားကို နားလည်ဖို့ကြိုးစားတာကတော့ လူတွေရဲ့ နှစ်ပေါင်းများစွာတည်ဆောက်ထားတဲ့ အသိုက်အမြံုကနေ ထွက်ပြေးချင်လို့ပါပဲ။

but because it's an escape from the human anthill.

It's an escape from our own competition,

and our own dramas.

And that's why we enjoy looking at glaciers and oceans,

and contemplating the Earth from outside its perimeters, etc.

We like to feel in contact with something that is non-human,

and that is so deeply important to us.

What I think I've been talking about really is success and failure.

ကျွန်တော်ဘာကို ပြောပြနေတာလည်းဆိုတာကတော့ အဓိကအားဖြင့် အောင်မြင်မှုနဲ့ ရှံုးနိမ့်မှုကိုပါ။

And one of the interesting things about success

is that we think we know what it means.

If I said that there's somebody behind the screen who's very successful,

ကွန်တော် ခင်ဗျားကို ခင်ဗျားရဲ့နောက်မှာ လူတယောက်ရှိတယ်

အဲဒီလူဟာ အင်မတန် အောင်မြင်တဲ့သူလို့ ပြောရင် ခင်ဗျားရဲ့ခေါင်းထဲကို

certain ideas would immediately come to mind.

You'd think that person might have made a lot of money,

ဒီလူဟာ ပိုက်ဆံတော်တော်ရှာနိုင်မှာပဲ

သူ့ပတ်ဝန်းကျင်မှာ တော်တော်နာမည်ရှိတဲ့သူတယောက်ပဲလို့ အထင်ချက်ချင်း ရောက်လာလိမ့်မယ်။

achieved renown in some field.

My own theory of success --

ကျွန်တော့်ရဲ့ အောင်မြင်မှုနဲ့ ပတ်သက်လို့ လေ့လာသုံးသပ်ချက်တွေ -- ပြီးတော့ ကျွန်တော်ဟာ

I'm somebody who's very interested in success,

အောင်မြင်မှုကို အင်မတန်စိတ်ဝင်စားတဲ့ သူတယောက်ပါ။ တကယ်လည်း ကျွန်တော် အောင်မြင်ချင်ပါတယ်။

I really want to be successful,

always thinking, how can I be more successful?

ကျွန်တော် အမြဲတစေ စဉ်းစားလေ့ရှိတယ် "ငါဘယ်လို လုပ်ပြီး ပိုအောင်မြင်အောင် ကြိုးစားရပါ့မလည်း" လို့ပါ။

But as I get older, I'm also very nuanced about what that word "success" might mean.

Here's an insight that I've had about success:

You can't be successful at everything.

We hear a lot of talk about work-life balance.

ကျွန်တော်တို့တွေ အလုပ်နဲ့ဘဝ သဟဇာတဖြစ်အောင်နေနည်းတွေကို အများကြီး ကြားဖူးကြတယ်။

Nonsense.

တကယ်တော့ အဲဒီနည်းတွေဟာ အဓိပ္ပါယ်သိပ်မရှိလှဘူး။ အကုန်လုံး ခင်ဗျား မရနိုင်ဘူး။

You can't have it all. You can't.

So any vision of success has to admit what it's losing out on,

ဒါဆို အောင်မြင်မှုကို ကြည့်တဲ့အခါမှာ

အောင်မြင်မှု အတွက် ဘာတွေ ဆုံးရှံူးနေသလည်း၊

where the element of loss is.

ဘယ်နေရာမှာ ဘာတွေကို ဆုံးရှံူးနေသလည်းဆိုတာကို ထည့်ကို စဉ်းစားကြရမှာ ဖြစ်ပါတယ်။

And I think any wise life will accept,

as I say, that there is going to be an element where we're not succeeding.

And the thing about a successful life is that a lot of the time,

our ideas of what it would mean to live successfully are not our own.

chiefly, if you're a man, your father, and if you're a woman, your mother.

Psychoanalysis has been drumming home this message for about 80 years.

No one's quite listening hard enough, but I very much believe it's true.

And we also suck in messages from everything from the television,

These are hugely powerful forces

that define what we want and how we view ourselves.

When we're told that banking is a very respectable profession,

a lot of us want to go into banking.

When banking is no longer so respectable, we lose interest in banking.

We are highly open to suggestion.

So what I want to argue for is not that we should give up

on our ideas of success,

but we should make sure that they are our own.

We should focus in on our ideas,

and make sure that we own them;

that we are truly the authors of our own ambitions.

Because it's bad enough not getting what you want,

but it's even worse to have an idea of what it is you want,

and find out, at the end of the journey,

that it isn't, in fact, what you wanted all along.

So, I'm going to end it there.

But let's accept the strangeness of some of our ideas.

Let's probe away at our notions of success.

Let's make sure our ideas of success are truly our own.

But how do you reconcile this idea

and that a society that encourages that,

perhaps has to have some winners and losers?

အောင်နိုင်သူနဲ့ ရှံူးနိမ့်သူတွေကို ခွဲခြားတဲ့စနစ်ကို အားပေးတယ်ဆိုရင်ပေါ့။

Alain De Botton: Yes, I think it's merely the randomness

Alain de Bottom: ဟုတ်ကဲ့။ အစဉ်တကျမဟုတ်တဲ့

of the winning and losing process that I want to stress,

အောင်မြင်မှုနဲ့ ရှံူးနိမ့်မှုဖြစ်စဉ်ကို ကျွန်တော်က ထောက်ပြချင်တာပါ။

because the emphasis nowadays is so much on the justice of everything,

ဘာလို့လည်းဆိုတော့ အခုခေတ် အလေးပေးနေတာတွေဟာ

အရာရာအပေါ်မှာ တရားမျှတမှုရှိဖို့ကိုပါ။

and politicians always talk about justice.

နိုင်ငံရေးသမားတွေကလည်း အမြဲတမ်း တရားမျှတမှုရှိဖို့ကို ပြောကြပါတယ်။

Now I'm a firm believer in justice, I just think that it's impossible.

အခု ကျွန်တော်က တရားကို မျှမျှတတ စီရင်တာကို အားပေးတဲ့သူပါ။ ဒါပေမယ့် အရာရာ တရားမျှတဖို့ဆိုတာ မဖြစ်နိုင်ဘူးလို့လည်း ထင်ပါတယ်။

So we should do everything we can to pursue it,

တတ်စွမ်းသလောက် တရားမျှတမှုရှိဖို့ ကြိုးစားကြရမှာပါ။

but we should always remember that whoever is facing us,

whatever has happened in their lives,

there will be a strong element of the haphazard.

That's what I'm trying to leave room for;

otherwise, it can get quite claustrophobic.

with a successful economy?

Or do you think that you can't,

but it doesn't matter that much that we're putting too much emphasis on that?

AB: The nightmare thought

is that frightening people is the best way to get work out of them,

လူတွေကို ကြောက်လန့်အောင်လုပ်ရတာဟာ သူတို့ကို အလုပ်ပေးဖို့ အကောင်းဆုံးနည်းလို့။

and that somehow the crueler the environment,

ပြီးတော့ ပတ်ဝန်းကျင်အနေအထားက ပိုဆိုးရွားလေ

the more people will rise to the challenge.

လူတွေဟာ ပိုရုန်းကန်ကြိုးစားလေ ပါပဲ။

You want to think, who would you like as your ideal dad?

ခင်ဗျား ဘယ်သူ့ကို ခင်ဗျားရဲ့ စံပြအဖေအဖြစ် သတ်မှတ်နိုင်မလည်း လို့ စဉ်းစားချင်စဉ်းစားမယ်။

And your ideal dad is somebody who is tough but gentle.

ခင်ဗျားရဲ့ စံပြအဖေဟာ စည်းကမ်းတင်းကြပ်ပေမယ့် နူးညံ့တဲ့သူတယောက်ဖြစ်မယ်။

And it's a very hard line to make.

We need fathers, as it were, the exemplary father figures in society,

avoiding the two extremes,

which is the authoritarian disciplinarian on the one hand,

ဘယ်လိုမျိုးလည်းဆိုရင် တဖက်ကကြည့်ရင် အာဏာရှိတယ်၊ စည်းကမ်းတင်းကြပ်တဲ့သူ၊

and on the other, the lax, no-rules option.

နောက်တဖက်အနေနဲ့ ပျော့ပျောင်းတဲ့ စည်းကမ်းလျော့ရဲတဲ့သူမျိုး။
