For me they normally happen, these career crises,

I'm mentioning all this because I think this is not merely a personal problem;

you may think I'm wrong in this,

but I think we live in an age when our lives are regularly punctuated

लेकिन मुझे लगता है कि हम एक ऐसे युग मे रहते है जहाँ हमारा जीवन नियिमत रूप से,

by career crises, by moments when what we thought we knew --

कितने पल जब हम सोचते थे की हम जानते हैं

about our lives, about our careers --

हमारे जीवन के बारे मे .... अपने कैरियर के बारे मे

comes into contact with a threatening sort of reality.

एक भयावह कर देने वाली सच्चाई हमारे सामने आ जाती है!

It's perhaps easier now than ever before to make a good living.

जबकि अगर देखा जाये तो पहले की तुलना में एक अच्छा जीवन पाना आज शायद ज्यादा आसान है।

It's perhaps harder than ever before

लेकिन ये पहले की तुलना में शायद कहीं ज्यादा मुश्किल है की हम,

to stay calm, to be free of career anxiety.

की हम शांत रह पायें और करियर की चिंताओं से खुद को मुक्त रख सकें

I want to look now, if I may, at some of the reasons

मैं देखना चाहता हूँ, अगर मैं कर सकता हूँ तो..

कि वो कौनसे कारण हैं ,

why we might be feeling anxiety about our careers.

जिनकी वजह से हम अपने करियर (व्यवसाय) में चिंताएं महसूस कर रहे हैं ।

Why we might be victims of these career crises,

हम इन कैरियर संकटों के शिकार क्यों हो सकते है,

as we're weeping softly into our pillows.

जबकि हम धीरे से तकिये में सर रख कर रो रहे हों...

One of the reasons why we might be suffering

हमारे दुखों के कारणों मे से एक हो सकता है कि..

is that we are surrounded by snobs.

हम मिथ्याभिमानी (झूठा अभिमान करने वाले) लोगों से घिरे हैं ।

In a way, I've got some bad news,

अब...., एक तरह से, मेरे पास कुछ बुरी खबर है..

particularly to anybody who's come to Oxford from abroad.

मुख्य रूप से उसके लिए जो बाहर से ऑक्सफोर्ड आ रहा है,

There's a real problem with snobbery,

वहां पर लोगो को कम आंकना एक मुख्य समस्या है

because sometimes people from outside the U.K.

क्योकि ब्रिटेन से बाहर के लोग कभी कभी..

imagine that snobbery is a distinctively U.K. phenomenon,

कल्पना करते है कि दंभ मुख्य तौर पे ब्रिटेन में होने वाली एक घटना है

fixated on country houses and titles.

जो कि वहां के घरों और खिताबों पर छपी हुयी हैं

The bad news is that's not true.

बुरी खबर यह है कि ये सच नहीं है

Snobbery is a global phenomenon; we are a global organization,

दंभ एक वैश्विक घटना है |

this is a global phenomenon.

हम एक वैश्विक संगठन हैं | यह एक वैश्विक घटना है.

What is a snob?

यह मौजूद है | एक मिथ्याभिमानी (झूठा अभिमानी ) क्या है?

A snob is anybody who takes a small part of you,

एक मिथ्याभिमानी वो है जो आपका एक छोटा सा हिस्सा लेता है

and uses that to come to a complete vision of who you are.

और उसका प्रयोग करके आपकी पूरी छवि बना लेता है

That is snobbery.

ये दंभ है

The dominant kind of snobbery that exists nowadays is job snobbery.

और दंभ का प्रमुख प्रकार

जो आज कल मौजूद है , नौकरी की दंभ है

You encounter it within minutes at a party, when you get asked

किसी भी पार्टी में आप इससे कुछ ही पलों में रूबरू हो जाते हैं

जब आपसे वो मशहूर और एकलौता प्रश्न पुछा जाता है

that famous iconic question of the early 21st century,

२१वी सदी कि शुरुवात का सबसे महत्वपूर्ण प्रश्न.."आप क्या करते हैं?"

"What do you do?"

According to how you answer that question,

और आप इस प्रश्न का किस प्रकार से उत्तर देते हैं उसी अनुसार

people are either incredibly delighted to see you,

लोग या तो आप को देख कर अविश्वनीय रूप से खुश होते हैं

or look at their watch and make their excuses.

या फिर अपनी घडी में देख कर कुछ बहाना बनाना शुरू कर देते हैं..

(Laughter)

(हँसी)

Now, the opposite of a snob is your mother.

अब एक घमंडी/मिथ्याभिमानी का विपरीत है, आपकी माँ

(Laughter)

Not necessarily your mother, or indeed mine,

जरुरी नहीं है कि आप कि और कहने को मेरी माँ हो..

but, as it were, the ideal mother,

बल्कि यहाँ हम एक आदर्श माँ कि कल्पना कर रहे हैं

somebody who doesn't care about your achievements.

कोई ऐसा जो आपकी उपलब्धियों के बारे में कोई परवाह नहीं करता

Unfortunately, most people are not our mothers.

लेकिन दुर्भाग्यवश , हर कोई इस दुनिया में माँ जैसा नहीं होता

Most people make a strict correlation between how much time,

ज्यादातर लोग एक खास सहसंबंध बनाते है की कितना समय

and if you like, love --

और यदि आपको पसंद हो , प्यार ,.. प्रसंगयुक्त प्यार नहीं,

not romantic love, though that may be something --

हालाँकि वह कुछ भी हो सकता है

but love in general, respect -- they are willing to accord us,

जो कि वो लोग हमें खुद से दे सकते हैं, उसकी कड़ी परिभाषा

that will be strictly defined by our position in the social hierarchy.

And that's a lot of the reason why we care so much about our careers

और यही एक सबसे बड़ा कारण है जिसकी वजह से हम अपने करियर के बारे में इतना अधिक सोचते हैं

and indeed start caring so much about material goods.

और वास्तव में भौतिक वस्तुओं का इतना ज्यादा ख्याल रखने लगते हैं

You know, we're often told that we live in very materialistic times,

आपको मालूम है , हमें अक्सर कहा जाता है की हम भौतिक समय में रह रहे हैं

that we're all greedy people.

I don't think we are particularly materialistic.

I think we live in a society which has simply pegged certain emotional rewards

बल्कि मुझे ऐसा लगता है कि हम एक ऐसे समाज में रहते हैं जहाँ

to the acquisition of material goods.

जिसे आप भौतिक वस्तुओं का संग्रह बोल सकते हैं

It's not the material goods we want; it's the rewards we want.

वास्तविकता में हम ये वस्तुएं नहीं चाहते, बल्कि हम इनके होने से मिलने वाले आदर को चाहते हैं

It's a new way of looking at luxury goods.

और ये एक नया तरीका है, विलासी (महंगी) वस्तुओं के हमारे पास होने को देखने का

The next time you see somebody driving a Ferrari, don't think,

तो अगली बार अगर आप किसी को फेर्रारी (एक बहुत महंगी कार) चलाते हुए देखें

तो ये न सोचें कि "ये व्यक्ति तो लालची लगता है"

"This is somebody who's greedy."

Think, "This is somebody who is incredibly vulnerable and in need of love."

बल्कि सोचें "ये वह व्यक्ति है जो कि अंदर से बहुत अकेला है और इसे प्यार कि बहुत ज्यादा जरुरत hai"

दुसरे शब्दों में --(हँसी)

(Laughter)

Feel sympathy, rather than contempt.

हमदर्दी रखे , घृणा नहीं .

There are other reasons --

कुछ और कारण भी हैं

There are other reasons why it's perhaps harder now to feel calm than ever before.

कुछ और भी कारण हैं जिसकी वजह से शायद आज ये बहुत मुश्किल है

कि पहले कि तुलना में शांत महसूस कर पाना

One of these, and it's paradoxical,

इनमे से एक, देखा जाये तो भ्रमित करने वाला है, क्यूंकि यह कुछ अच्छी चीज के साथ जुड़ा हुआ है

because it's linked to something that's rather nice,

और वह है हमारे करियर के लिए हमारी आशाएं

is the hope we all have for our careers.

Never before have expectations been so high

इससे पहले कभी ये आशाएं इतनी ऊँची नहीं रहीं

about what human beings can achieve with their lifespan.

कि एक इंसान अपने जीवन कल में क्या क्या पा सकता है

We're told, from many sources, that anyone can achieve anything.

हमें कहा जाता है, बहुत सारे स्थानों पर, कि कोई इंसान कुछ भी पा सकता है

We've done away with the caste system,

हम जातिवाद का अंत कर चुके हैं

we are now in a system where anyone can rise to any position they please.

उस स्थान तक, जिसे वो पसंद करते हैं

And it's a beautiful idea.

और यह एक बहुत ही अच्छा विचार है

Along with that is a kind of spirit of equality;

we're all basically equal.

There are no strictly defined hierarchies.

जहाँ पर कोई भी कड़ाई से लिखा हुआ

पदों का क्रम नहीं है

There is one really big problem with this,

पर इसके साथ जुडी हुयी एक बड़ी समस्या भी है

and that problem is envy.

और वो समस्या है, ईर्ष्या

Envy, it's a real taboo to mention envy,

इर्ष्या , इर्ष्या की चर्चा करना प्रतिबंधित माना जाता है

but if there's one dominant emotion in modern society, that is envy.

परन्तु अगर आज के समाज में कोई प्रमुख भाव बचा है, तो वो भाव ईर्ष्या का है

And it's linked to the spirit of equality.

और यह समानता की भावना से जुड़ा हुआ है , चलिए मैं आपको समझाता हूँ

Let me explain.

I think it would be very unusual for anyone here, or anyone watching,

मुझे लगता है कि यह किसी के भी लिए बहुत असामान्य होगा जो यहाँ पर उपस्तिथ है या इसे देख रहा है .

to be envious of the Queen of England.

इंग्लैंड कि महारानी से इर्शयालु होना

Even though she is much richer than any of you are,

हालाँकि वो आप में से किसी कि भी तुलना में बहुत अमीर है.

and she's got a very large house,

और उनके पास एक बहुत ही बड़ा घर है.

the reason why we don't envy her is because she's too weird.

हम उनसे ईर्ष्या क्यों नहीं करते है ,इसका कारण है क्योंकि वह बहुत अजीब है.

(Laughter)

She's simply too strange.

वह बस बहुत अजीब है

We can't relate to her, she speaks in a funny way,

हम अपने आप को उन से जोड़ कर नहीं देख पाते,वह बहुत अजीब तरीके से बोलती है.

she comes from an odd place.

वह एक विशिष्ट जगह से आयीं हैं

So we can't relate to her,

and when you can't relate to somebody, you don't envy them.

The closer two people are -- in age, in background,

in the process of identification -- the more there's a danger of envy,

पहचानने की प्रक्रिया में ,वहां पर ईर्ष्या का और अधिक खतरा होता है.

which is incidentally why none of you should ever go to a school reunion,

संयोग से भी, आप में से किसी को भी,कभी भी,एक स्कूल के छात्रों के पुनर्मिलन के लिए जाना नहीं चाहिए.

because there is no stronger reference point than people one was at school with.

The problem of modern society is it turns the whole world into a school.

लेकिन समस्या, आमतौर पर, आधुनिक समाज की है, जो इस पूरी दुनिया को बदल देती है

Everybody's wearing jeans, everybody's the same.

And yet, they're not.

So there's a spirit of equality combined with deep inequality,

which can make for a very stressful situation.

It's probably as unlikely that you would nowadays

become as rich and famous as Bill Gates,

as it was unlikely in the 17th century

that you would accede to the ranks of the French aristocracy.

But the point is, it doesn't feel that way.

It's made to feel, by magazines and other media outlets,

that if you've got energy, a few bright ideas about technology, a garage --

you, too, could start a major thing.

The consequences of this problem make themselves felt in bookshops.

When you go to a large bookshop and look at the self-help sections,

जब आप एक बड़ी किताबों वाली दुकान में जाते हो और स्व-सहायता वाले वर्गों को देखते हो,

as I sometimes do --

जैसा मैं भी कभी कभी करता हूँ,

if you analyze self-help books produced in the world today,

यदि आप स्व-सहायता वाली उत्पादित कि गयी किताबों का विश्लेषण करते हो

आजकी दुनिया में मूलतः दो प्रकार हैं

there are basically two kinds.

The first kind tells you, "You can do it! You can make it! Anything's possible!"

पहला प्रकार आपको बताता है , "आप यह कर सकते हो! आप यह बन सकते हो! कुछ भी संभव है!"

दूसरा प्रकार आपको बताता है कि आप कैसे निपट सकते हैं

The other kind tells you how to cope with what we politely call "low self-esteem,"

जिसे हम विनम्रता से कह सकते हैं "आत्म-सम्मान की कमी"

or impolitely call, "feeling very bad about yourself."

और अविनम्रता से से बोल सकते हैं "अपने बारे में बहुत बुरा महसूस करना"

There's a real correlation

between a society that tells people that they can do anything,

and the existence of low self-esteem.

So that's another way in which something quite positive can have a nasty kickback.

There is another reason why we might be feeling more anxious --

about our careers, about our status in the world today, than ever before.

And it's, again, linked to something nice.

And that nice thing is called meritocracy.

और यह अच्छी चीज है जिसे हम मेरिटॉक्रसी (ऐसी स्तिथि जहाँ बुद्धि को सम्मान दिया जाता है- प्रतिभाशाली) कह सकते हैं

Everybody, all politicians on Left and Right,

सभी लोग, सभी राजनेता बाएँ और दाएँ पर

agree that meritocracy is a great thing,

सहमत है कि meritocracy एक बड़ी बात है,

and we should all be trying to make our societies really, really meritocratic.

और हम सभी को अपने समाज को वास्तव में एक प्रतिभाशाली (meritocratic) समाज बनाने की कोशिश करनी चाहिए.

In other words -- what is a meritocratic society?

दूसरे शब्दों में, एक "meritocratic" समाज क्या है ?

A meritocratic society is one in which, if you've got talent and energy and skill,

प्रतिभाशाली (meritocratic) समाज वो है जिसमे

अगर आपके पास प्रतिभा और ऊर्जा और कौशल है,

you will get to the top, nothing should hold you back.

तो आप बहुत ऊँचाइयों तक जायेंगे, कोई चीज आपको रोक नहीं सकती

It's a beautiful idea.

यह एक सुंदर विचार है. समस्या यह है,

The problem is, if you really believe in a society

अगर आप सच में एक ऐसे समाज में विश्वास करते हो

where those who merit to get to the top, get to the top,

जिसमें अगर किसी में प्रतिभा है, और उसे ऊपर जाना चाहिए, वही ऊपर जाता है

you'll also, by implication, and in a far more nasty way,

उसी तरीके से, आप को उस समाज में भी भरोसा करना चाहिए, हालाँकि ये काफी बुरा लग सकता है

believe in a society where those who deserve to get to the bottom

also get to the bottom and stay there.

In other words, your position in life comes to seem not accidental,

but merited and deserved.

And that makes failure seem much more crushing.

You know, in the Middle Ages, in England,

आप जानते हैं , कि मध्य युग में इंग्लैंड में,

when you met a very poor person,

जब आप किसी बहुत ही गरीब व्यक्ति से मिलते थे...

that person would be described as an "unfortunate" --

उस व्यक्ति को "बदकिस्मत" कहा जाता था

literally, somebody who had not been blessed by fortune, an unfortunate.

सच में, कोई भी जिसके साथ भाग्य नहीं है, बदकिस्मत है

Nowadays, particularly in the United States,

if you meet someone at the bottom of society,

they may unkindly be described as a "loser."

There's a real difference between an unfortunate and a loser,

and our belief in who is responsible for our lives.

It's no longer the gods, it's us. We're in the driving seat.

That's exhilarating if you're doing well,

and very crushing if you're not.

It leads, in the worst cases --

in the analysis of a sociologist like Emil Durkheim --

it leads to increased rates of suicide.

There are more suicides in developed, individualistic countries

than in any other part of the world.

दुनिया के किसी अन्य भाग में की तुलना में

And some of the reason for that

और इसके कुछ कारण ये भी हैं की लोग जो कुछ भी होता है

is that people take what happens to them extremely personally --

उन्हें बहुत ही व्यक्तिगत रूप से अपने ऊपर लेते हैं

they own their success, but they also own their failure.

Is there any relief from some of these pressures

that I've been outlining?

I think there is.

मुझे लगता है हाँ, और मैं उनमें से कुछ की तरफ जाना चाहता हूं

I just want to turn to a few of them.

Let's take meritocracy.

चलो प्रतिभा (meritocracy) को लेते हैं.

This idea that everybody deserves to get where they get to,

यह विचार जो कहता है, की हर किसी को वो पाना चाहिए जिसका वो हकदार है

I think it's a crazy idea, completely crazy.

मुझे लगता है यह एक पागल विचार है, पूरी तरह से पागल

I will support any politician of Left and Right,

with any halfway-decent meritocratic idea;

I am a meritocrat in that sense.

But I think it's insane to believe

that we will ever make a society that is genuinely meritocratic;

एक ऐसा समाज बनाने की कल्पना करें जो सही मायने में प्रतिभाशाली है. यह एक असंभव सपना है

it's an impossible dream.

The idea that we will make a society where literally everybody is graded,

यह विचार है कि हम एक समाज बनायेंगे

जहाँ सचमुच सभी लोग वर्गीकृत है,

the good at the top, bad at the bottom,

अच्छा शीर्ष पर है, और बुरा नीचे है,

exactly done as it should be, is impossible.

और ये बिलकुल ऐसे ही हो, जैसा की इसे होना चाहिए, यह असंभव है

There are simply too many random factors:

वहां और भी कई आकस्मिक कारक है :

accidents, accidents of birth,

दुर्घटनाएं, जन्म की दुर्घटनाएं,

accidents of things dropping on people's heads, illnesses, etc.

लोगो के सिर पर गिरने वाली चीजों से दुर्घटनाएं, बीमारियाँ, आदि.

We will never get to grade them,

हम उन्हें कभी वर्गीकृत नहीं करेंगे,

never get to grade people as they should.

और ना ही कभी इंसानों को, जैसा की उन्हें होना चाहिए

I'm drawn to a lovely quote by St. Augustine in "The City of God,"
