For me they normally happen, these career crises,

that I normally end up weeping into a pillow.

I'm mentioning all this because I think this is not merely a personal problem;

you may think I'm wrong in this,

but I think we live in an age when our lives are regularly punctuated

by career crises, by moments when what we thought we knew --

about our lives, about our careers --

comes into contact with a threatening sort of reality.

It's perhaps easier now than ever before to make a good living.

قد يكون تحقيق معيشة جيدة الان اسهل مما كان عليه في السابق

It's perhaps harder than ever before

و الآن ربما من الاصعب مما كان عليه في السابق

to stay calm, to be free of career anxiety.

ان تبقى هادئا وان تتحرر من القلق المهني

I want to look now, if I may, at some of the reasons

اريد الان ،ان جاز لي

ان القي نظرة

why we might be feeling anxiety about our careers.

على بعض اسباب شعورنا بالقلق ازاء مهننا

Why we might be victims of these career crises,

و كوننا ضحايا لهذه الازمات المهنية احيانا

as we're weeping softly into our pillows.

بينما نبكي بهدوء على وسائدنا

One of the reasons why we might be suffering

قد يكون احد اسباب معاناتنا احيانا

is that we are surrounded by snobs.

هو اننا محاطين بالمتكبرين

In a way, I've got some bad news,

الان، احمل لكم بعض الاخبار السيئة بطريقة ما

particularly to anybody who's come to Oxford from abroad.

تحديدا لمن حضروا لمدينة اوكسفورد من الخارج

There's a real problem with snobbery,

هنالك مشكلة حقيقية مع الغطرسة

because sometimes people from outside the U.K.

فاحيانا يتخيل الاشخاص من خارج المملكة المتحدة

imagine that snobbery is a distinctively U.K. phenomenon,

ان الغطرسة ظاهرة تميزها

fixated on country houses and titles.

بسبب الالقاب و المنازل الفخمة هناك

The bad news is that's not true.

الخبر السيء هو ان هذا ليس صحيحا

Snobbery is a global phenomenon; we are a global organization,

فالغطرسة ظاهرة عالمية

this is a global phenomenon.

نحن منظمة عالمية وهذه ظاهرة عالمية

What is a snob?

انها موجودة، ما هو المتكبر؟

A snob is anybody who takes a small part of you,

المتكبر هو الشخص الذي ياخذ جزئية صغيرا منك

and uses that to come to a complete vision of who you are.

و يستخدمها لتكوين صورة كاملة عنك

That is snobbery.

هذه هي الغطرسة

The dominant kind of snobbery that exists nowadays is job snobbery.

اما النوع الاكثر شيوعا من الغطرسة هذه الايام

فهو غطرسة العمل

You encounter it within minutes at a party, when you get asked

يمكنك ملامسة هذا النوع من الغظرسة خلال دقائق في احدى الحفلات

that famous iconic question of the early 21st century,

"What do you do?"

According to how you answer that question,

people are either incredibly delighted to see you,

اما ان يسر الناس لرؤيتك بشكل لا يصدق

or look at their watch and make their excuses.

او ينظروا الى ساعاتهم و يختلقوا اعذارهم

Now, the opposite of a snob is your mother.

الان، نقيض المتكبر هو امك

(Laughter)

Not necessarily your mother, or indeed mine,

ليس بالضرورة امك ،او امي انا بالواقع

but, as it were, the ideal mother,

و لكن اذا جاز التعبير " الام المثالية"

somebody who doesn't care about your achievements.

فهي شخص لا تهمه انجازاتك

Unfortunately, most people are not our mothers.

و لكن لسوء الحظ فمعظم الناس ليسوا امهاتنا

Most people make a strict correlation between how much time,

معظم الناس يقيمون روابط قوية بين كمية الوقت او حتى الاعجاب و

and if you like, love --

الحب , الحب غير الرومانسي

not romantic love, though that may be something --

مع انه قد يكون جزءا

but love in general, respect -- they are willing to accord us,

that will be strictly defined by our position in the social hierarchy.

And that's a lot of the reason why we care so much about our careers

و هذا يشكل جزءا كبيرا من السبب وراء اهتمامنا الشديد بمهننا

and indeed start caring so much about material goods.

وحقيقةً، وراء زيادة اهتمامنا بالسلع المادية

You know, we're often told that we live in very materialistic times,

عادة ما يتم اخبارنا باننا نعيش زمنا ماديا كما تعلمون

that we're all greedy people.

و باننا جميعا اناس طماعون

I don't think we are particularly materialistic.

لا اظن اننا حقا ماديين

I think we live in a society which has simply pegged certain emotional rewards

to the acquisition of material goods.

It's not the material goods we want; it's the rewards we want.

It's a new way of looking at luxury goods.

The next time you see somebody driving a Ferrari, don't think,

لا تقل في نفسك "ان هذا الشخص طماع"..

"This is somebody who's greedy."

Think, "This is somebody who is incredibly vulnerable and in need of love."

انما قل "انه شخص ضعيف يحتاج الى الحب"

بعبارة اخرى -- (ضحك)

Feel sympathy, rather than contempt.

تعاطف معه بدلا من احتقاره

There are other reasons --

و هنالك اسباب اخرى --

There are other reasons why it's perhaps harder now to feel calm than ever before.

هنالك اسباب اخرى وراء

كون شعورنا بالهدوء حاليا اكثر صعوبة من ذي قبل

One of these, and it's paradoxical,

احد هذه الاسباب، وهوسبب متناقض كونه مرتبطا بشيء قريب الى النفس الى حد ما

because it's linked to something that's rather nice,

انه الامل الذي نحمله جميعنا تجاه مهننا

is the hope we all have for our careers.

Never before have expectations been so high

فلم تكن التوقعات

about what human beings can achieve with their lifespan.

لما يمكن للانسان تحقيقه في حياته مرتفعة الى هذا الحد يوما

We're told, from many sources, that anyone can achieve anything.

يتم اخبارنا، من مصادر كثيرة، بأن اي شخص لديه القدرة على تحقيق اي شيء

We've done away with the caste system,

لقد انتهينا من نظام الطبقات الاجتماعية

we are now in a system where anyone can rise to any position they please.

اننا حاليا بنظام يمكن فيه لاي شخص

الارتفاع للمنزلة التي يرغبها

And it's a beautiful idea.

و هذه فكرة جميلة .

Along with that is a kind of spirit of equality;

و بالاضافة الى ذلك هنالك نوع من المساواة.فنحن جميعا متساوون بشكل اساسي.

we're all basically equal.

There are no strictly defined hierarchies.

فليس هنالك نوعا محددا

There is one really big problem with this,

and that problem is envy.

و هذه المشكلة هي الحسد.

Envy, it's a real taboo to mention envy,

but if there's one dominant emotion in modern society, that is envy.

And it's linked to the spirit of equality.

Let me explain.

I think it would be very unusual for anyone here, or anyone watching,

اعتقد بانه سيكون امرا غير اعتيادي لاي احد هنا ،او اي احد من المشاهدين،

to be envious of the Queen of England.

ان يغار من ملكة انجلترا.

Even though she is much richer than any of you are,

بالرغم من انها اغنى منكم جميعا.

and she's got a very large house,

ومن انها تمتلك منزلا كبيرا جدا.

the reason why we don't envy her is because she's too weird.

سبب عدم حسدنا لها هو كونها غريبة الاطوار.

(Laughter)

She's simply too strange.

انها ببساطة غريبة جدا.

We can't relate to her, she speaks in a funny way,

ولا يمكننا التواصل معها . فهي تتحدث بطريقة مضحكة.

she comes from an odd place.

So we can't relate to her,

and when you can't relate to somebody, you don't envy them.

The closer two people are -- in age, in background,

in the process of identification -- the more there's a danger of envy,

which is incidentally why none of you should ever go to a school reunion,

because there is no stronger reference point than people one was at school with.

The problem of modern society is it turns the whole world into a school.

Everybody's wearing jeans, everybody's the same.

الى مدرسة.الجميع يرتدي فيها الجينز,الجميع متشابهين.

And yet, they're not.

الا انهم ليسوا كذلك .

So there's a spirit of equality combined with deep inequality,

اذا هنالك روح من المساواة ,يخالطها تفاوت عميق .

which can make for a very stressful situation.

مما يسبب -- يمكن ان يسبب حالة من الاجهاد .

It's probably as unlikely that you would nowadays

و على الارجح فان عدم احتمالية ان تصبح هذه الايام بنفس ...

become as rich and famous as Bill Gates,

غنى و شهرة بيل جايتس ,

as it was unlikely in the 17th century

مشابهة لعدم احتمالية انضمامك ..

that you would accede to the ranks of the French aristocracy.

لصفوف الارستقراطية الفرنسية في القرن السابع عشر .

But the point is, it doesn't feel that way.

و لكن الفكرة هي ان الامر لا يبدو كذلك .

It's made to feel, by magazines and other media outlets,

تحاول المجلات و وسائل الاعلام ان تجعل الامر يبدو كذلك

that if you've got energy, a few bright ideas about technology, a garage --

اذا كانت لديك الطاقة، و بعض الافكار النيرة المتعلقة بالتكنولوجيا

وكراج سيارات في منزلك ، فانت ايضا قادرا على البدء بشيء مهم

you, too, could start a major thing.

(Laughter)

The consequences of this problem make themselves felt in bookshops.

و نتيجة لهذه المشكلة يشعر الناس كانهم في مكتبة لبيع الكتب.

When you go to a large bookshop and look at the self-help sections,

عندم تذهب لمكتبة بيع كتب كبيرة و تنظر الى قسم التطوير الذاتي

as I sometimes do --

كما افعل انا احيانا،

if you analyze self-help books produced in the world today,

اذا قمت بتحليل كتب المساعدة الذاتية التي يتم انتاجها في العالم اليوم

نلاحظ ان هنالك نوعان اساسيان .

there are basically two kinds.

The first kind tells you, "You can do it! You can make it! Anything's possible!"

يقول لك النوع الاول "يمكنك تحقيق ما تريد ! يمكنك النجاح ! ليس هنالك مستحيل ! "

و يخبرك النوع الآخر عن كيفية التكيف

The other kind tells you how to cope with what we politely call "low self-esteem,"

مع ما نسميه ادباً " قلة ثقة بالنفس "

or impolitely call, "feeling very bad about yourself."

و نسميه وقاحة "شعورنا بالسوء تجاه انفسنا ."

There's a real correlation

هناك علاقة حقيقية ...

between a society that tells people that they can do anything,

علاقة حقيقية بين مجتمع يخبر الناس ان بامكانهم فعل اي شيء ..

and the existence of low self-esteem.

ووجود ظاهرة قلة الثقة بالنفس فيه

So that's another way in which something quite positive can have a nasty kickback.

اذاً فهذه طريقة اخرى يمكن ان ينتج عن الامر الايجابي

There is another reason why we might be feeling more anxious --

هنالك سبب آخر لشعورنا بالقلق احيانا ,

about our careers, about our status in the world today, than ever before.

ازاء مهننا و موقعنا في العالم اليوم، اكثر من السابق.

And it's, again, linked to something nice.

و هو ايضا مرتبط بشيء جيد.

And that nice thing is called meritocracy.

و هذا الشيء الجيد يسمى الجدارة.

Everybody, all politicians on Left and Right,

الان،الجميع،جميع السياسين على اليسار و اليمين,

agree that meritocracy is a great thing,

متفقون على ان الجدارة امر رائع،

and we should all be trying to make our societies really, really meritocratic.

و علينا جميعا السعي لجعل مجتمعاتنا جديرة بحق .

In other words -- what is a meritocratic society?

بعبارة اخرى،ما هو المجتمع الجدير ؟

A meritocratic society is one in which, if you've got talent and energy and skill,

المجتمع الجدير هو مجتمع فيه

من يمتلك الموهبة و الطاقة و المهارة،

you will get to the top, nothing should hold you back.

يصل الى القمة .لا يجب ان يعيقك شيء .

It's a beautiful idea.

انها فكرة جميلة . المشكلة هي

The problem is, if you really believe in a society

انه اذا كنت تؤمن حقا بمجتمع

where those who merit to get to the top, get to the top,

يصل فيه الى القمة من يستحق الوصول الى القمة

you'll also, by implication, and in a far more nasty way,

فسوف تصدق ايضا ،ضمنيا،و بطريقة اكثر سوءا بكثير ،

believe in a society where those who deserve to get to the bottom

بمجتمع فيه من يستحق النزول الى القاع

also get to the bottom and stay there.

ينزل ايضا الى القاع و يبقى هناك.

In other words, your position in life comes to seem not accidental,

بعبارة اخرى,فان موقعك في الحياة لا ياتي بمحض الصدفة

but merited and deserved.

و انما هو مستحق و مُكتسب.

And that makes failure seem much more crushing.

مما يجعل الفشل يبدو اكثر تحطيما.

You know, in the Middle Ages, in England,

تعرفون ،في العصور الوسطى،في انجلترا،

when you met a very poor person,

اذا قابلت شخصا فقيرا ,

that person would be described as an "unfortunate" --

فان هذا الشخص سيوصف بانه "غير محظوظ"

literally, somebody who had not been blessed by fortune, an unfortunate.

حرفيا ،شخص لم ينعم عليه بالثروة , غير محظوظ.

Nowadays, particularly in the United States,

هذه الايام ,تحديدا في الولايات المتحدة,

if you meet someone at the bottom of society,

اذا قابلت احدا من قاع المجتمع ،

they may unkindly be described as a "loser."

من الممكن ان يوصف،بلؤم بانه "فاشل"

There's a real difference between an unfortunate and a loser,

هناك فرق حقيقي بين الشخص غير المحظوظ (المسكين) و الفاشل

and that shows 400 years of evolution in society

و هذا يبين 400 سنة من التطور في المجتمع،

and our belief in who is responsible for our lives.

و ايماننا بمن هو مسؤول عن حياتنا.

It's no longer the gods, it's us. We're in the driving seat.

لم تعد الالهة المسؤولة بعد الان انما نحن.نحن المسيطرين.

That's exhilarating if you're doing well,

هذا امر مبهج بالنسبة لمن تسري اموره بشكل جيد،

and very crushing if you're not.

و امر محطم لمن لا تسري اموره بشكل جيد.

It leads, in the worst cases --

انها تؤدي الى،في اسوء الحالات،حسب تحليل علماء الاجتماع..

in the analysis of a sociologist like Emil Durkheim --

امثال ايميل دوركايم،تؤدي الى ارتفاع نسب الانتحار .

it leads to increased rates of suicide.

There are more suicides in developed, individualistic countries

هنالك حالات انتحار اكثر في الدول المتقدمة

than in any other part of the world.

اكثر من اي دولة اخرى في العالم.

And some of the reason for that

و جزء من السبب وراء ذلك هو ان الناس

is that people take what happens to them extremely personally --

ياخذون الامور التي تحدث معهم بشكل شخصي للغاية.

they own their success, but they also own their failure.

هم يملكون نجاحهم و يملكون فشلهم ايضا.

Is there any relief from some of these pressures

هل هناك طريقة للارتياح من اي من هذه الضغوطات

that I've been outlining?

التي قمت بعرضها منذ قليل؟

I think there is.

باعتقادي نعم هناك.اريد فقط الانتقال الى بعض منها .

I just want to turn to a few of them.

Let's take meritocracy.

فلناخذ الجدارة مثلا.

This idea that everybody deserves to get where they get to,

فكرة ان الجميع يستحقون الوصول الى ما هم عليه تلك.

I think it's a crazy idea, completely crazy.

اعتقد انها فكرة مجنونة ,مجنونة كليا ً.

I will support any politician of Left and Right,

سوف اقوم بدعم اي سياسي يميني او يساري،

with any halfway-decent meritocratic idea;

لديه فكرة جيدة نسبيا تخص مبدا الجدارة .

I am a meritocrat in that sense.

انا من مناصري مبدأ الجدارة .

But I think it's insane to believe

و لكن باعتقادي ، من الجنون الايمان بانه بامكاننا ...

that we will ever make a society that is genuinely meritocratic;

صنع مجتمع جدير بالأصالة . ان هذا حلم مستحيل .

it's an impossible dream.

The idea that we will make a society where literally everybody is graded,

فكرة ان نصنع مجتمعا..

فيه يصنف الجميع حرفيا ،

the good at the top, bad at the bottom,

الجيد في القمة ، و السيء في الحضيض ،

exactly done as it should be, is impossible.

و يتم عمل ذلك كما يجب بالضبط،ان هذا مستحيل.

There are simply too many random factors:

ببساطة هناك الكثير من العوامل العشوائية.

accidents, accidents of birth,

الحوادث،حوادث الولادة،

accidents of things dropping on people's heads, illnesses, etc.

حوادث وقوع الاشياء على رؤوس الناس ، الامراض , الخ.

We will never get to grade them,

لن نتمكن ابدا من تصنيفها .

never get to grade people as they should.

و لن نتمكن ابدا من تصنيف الناس كما يجب .

I'm drawn to a lovely quote by St. Augustine in "The City of God,"

لفت انتباهي مقولة لطيفة للقديس اوغستين في " مدينة الالهة"

where he says, "It's a sin to judge any man by his post."

حيث يقول " ان الحكم على الناس من خلال مناصبهم خطيئة."

In modern English that would mean

هذا يعني في الانجليزية الحديثة ،

it's a sin to come to any view of who you should talk to,

انها خطيئة .. ان تقوم بتكوين اي صورة عن من يجب ان تتحدث معهم

معتمدا على بطاقات العمل خاصتهم .

dependent on their business card.

It's not the post that should count.

ليس المنصب هو ما يجب ان ياخذ بعين الاعتبار.

According to St. Augustine, only God can really put everybody in their place;

و بحسب القديس اوغنستين،

فالله هو الوحيد الذي يمكنه وضع كل شخص في المكانة التي يستحقها.

he's going to do that on the Day of Judgment,

و انه سوف يقوم بعمل ذلك يوم الحساب

with angels and trumpets, and the skies will open.

مع الملائكة و نفخ الصور، و ستفتح السماء.

Insane idea, if you're a secularist person, like me.

فكرة مجنونة،ان كنت شخصا علمانيا مثلي انا.

But something very valuable in that idea, nevertheless.

و لكن بالرغم من ذلك فهنالك شيء ثمين جدا في هذه الفكرة .

بعبارة اخرى . اكبح جماحك عند الحكم على الناس .

In other words, hold your horses when you're coming to judge people.

You don't necessarily know what someone's true value is.

ليس بالضرورة ان تكون على علم بالقيمة الحقيقة لشخص ما.

That is an unknown part of them,

فهذا جزء مجهول منهم .

and we shouldn't behave as though it is known.

و لا يجب علينا ان نتصرف كأنه معلوم

There is another source of solace and comfort for all this.

هناك مصدر اخر للراحة والعزاء لهذا كله.

When we think about failing in life, when we think about failure,

عندما نفكر بالفشل بالحياة ، عندما نفكر بالفشل،

one of the reasons why we fear failing

احد اسباب خوفنا من الفشل هو

is not just a loss of income, a loss of status.

ليس فقط خسارة في الارباح او خسارة في المرتبة.

What we fear is the judgment and ridicule of others.

ما نخشاه هو حكم الاخرين و سخريتهم.و هذا موجود حقا.

And it exists.

The number one organ of ridicule, nowadays, is the newspaper.

العضو الأول المسؤول عن السخرية

هذه الايام ,هو الصحف

If you open the newspaper any day of the week,

و اذا قمت بفتح الصحيفة في اي من ايام الاسبوع ،

it's full of people who've messed up their lives.

تجد انها مليئة بالاشخاص الذين افسدوا حياتهم .

They've slept with the wrong person, taken the wrong substance,

اقاموا علاقات حميمية مع الشخص الخطأ .تناولوا المادة الخطأ.

passed the wrong piece of legislation --

اصدروا التشريع الخاطىء.بغض النظر عن ماهيته.

whatever it is, and then are fit for ridicule.

فيصبحون بذلك مناسبين للسخرية.

In other words, they have failed. And they are described as "losers."

بعبارة اخرى،قد فشلوا.و يتم وصفهم على انهم "فاشلين"

Now, is there any alternative to this?

الان،هل هناك بديلا لهذا الامر؟

I think the Western tradition shows us one glorious alternative, which is tragedy.

اعتقد ان التقاليد الغربية تعرض بديلا رائعا.

و هو المأساة.

Tragic art, as it developed in the theaters of ancient Greece,

فن المأساوية، كما تم تطويره في المسارح اليونانية القديمة،

in the fifth century B.C., was essentially an art form

في القرن الخامس قبل الميلاد،كان في الاساس شكلا من اشكال الفن

devoted to tracing how people fail,

تم تكريسه للبحث في سبب فشل الناس.

and also according them a level of sympathy,

و ايضا لمنحهم درجة من التعاطف.

which ordinary life would not necessarily accord them.

ليس بالضرورة ان تمنحهم اياها الحياة العادية

A few years ago, I was thinking about this,

اذكر اني كنت افكر بهذا الامر منذ بضعة سنين .

and I went to "The Sunday Sport,"

و ذهبت لالقاء نظرة على صحيفة "The Sunday Sport" "رياضة الاحد"

a tabloid newspaper I don't recommend you start reading

و هي صحيفة شعبية لا انصحكم بالبدء بقراءتها ،

if you're not familiar with it already.

اذا لم تكونوا تعرفونها مسبقاً.

(Laughter)

و ذهبت للتحدث معهم

And I went to talk to them

about certain of the great tragedies of Western art.

بخصوص احدى تراجيديات الفن الغربي الرائعة

I wanted to see how they would seize the bare bones of certain stories,

و أردت أن أرى كيف سيقومون باستخدام العناصر الاساسية

لبعض القصص، اذا اتتهم كمادة اخبارية

if they came in as a news item at the news desk on a Saturday afternoon.

على مكتب الاخبار مساء يوم سبت.

I mentioned Othello; they'd not heard of it but were fascinated.

I asked them to write a headline for the story.

They came up with "Love-Crazed Immigrant Kills Senator's Daughter."

فاقترحوا العنوان " مهاجر مجنون بالحب يقتل ابنة عضو مجلس الشيوخ"

Splashed across the headline.

لعنوان رئيسي لهذه القصة اذا نشرت في الصحف

I gave them the plotline of Madame Bovary.

اعطيتهم احداث قصة مدام بوفاري

Again, a book they were enchanted to discover.

و مرة اخرى ،كتاب سحروا باكتشافه.

And they wrote "Shopaholic Adulteress Swallows Arsenic After Credit Fraud."

و كتبوا "زانية مدمنة على التسوق تجترع الزرنيخ بعد تعرضها لعملية احتيال مادي"

And then my favorite --

ما يعجبني من بين كل ذلك هو

they really do have a kind of genius of their own, these guys --

ان هؤلاء الرجال يملكون نوعا من العبقرية الخاصة بهم.

my favorite is Sophocles' Oedipus the King:

"Sex With Mum Was Blinding."

In a way, if you like, at one end of the spectrum of sympathy,

you've got the tabloid newspaper.

At the other end of the spectrum, you've got tragedy and tragic art.

و على الطرف الاخر من السلم هناك الماساوية و فن التراجيديا.

And I suppose I'm arguing that we should learn a little bit

و افترض انني اناقش حول ضرورة ان نتعلم القليل

about what's happening in tragic art.

عن ما يحدث في الفن الماساوي.

It would be insane to call Hamlet a loser.

من الجنون نعت هامليت بانه خاسر .

He is not a loser, though he has lost.

انه ليس خاسرا ، رغم انه قد خسر فعلا.

And I think that is the message of tragedy to us,

و اظن ان هذه هي رسالة المأساة الينا،

and why it's so very, very important, I think.

و هذا ايضا سبب كونها مهمة جدا جدا، كما أعتقد.

The other thing about modern society and why it causes this anxiety,

الشيء الاخر المتعلق بالمجتمع الحديث،

وسبب تسبيبه لهذا القلق،

is that we have nothing at its center that is non-human.

هو اننا لا نملك في مركزه شيء غير انساني.

We are the first society to be living in a world

نحن المجتمع الاول الذي يعيش عالما

where we don't worship anything other than ourselves.

حيث لا نعبد شيئا سوى انفسنا

We think very highly of ourselves, and so we should;

نفكر بانفسنا بشكل كبير.وهذا ما يجب علينا فعله .

we've put people on the Moon, done all sorts of extraordinary things.

وضعنا اناس على القمر ،قمنا بكافة انواع الاشياء الاستثنائية.

لهذا نميل لعبادة انفسنا.

And so we tend to worship ourselves. Our heroes are human heroes.

ابطالنا هم من ابطال البشر .

That's a very new situation.

هذا وضع جديد جداً.

Most other societies have had, right at their center,

كان لاغلبية المجتمعات الاخرى،تحديدا في مركزها،

the worship of something transcendent: a god, a spirit, a natural force,

عبادة شيء فائق . كإله،

روح،قوة طبيعة،الكون

the universe, whatever it is -- something else that is being worshiped.

بغض النظر عن ماهيته ،انه شيء اخر تتم عبادته

We've slightly lost the habit of doing that,

which is, I think, why we're particularly drawn to nature.

Not for the sake of our health, though it's often presented that way,

but because it's an escape from the human anthill.

It's an escape from our own competition,

and our own dramas.

And that's why we enjoy looking at glaciers and oceans,

and contemplating the Earth from outside its perimeters, etc.

و تاملنا للارض من خارج حدودها من الفضاء

We like to feel in contact with something that is non-human,

نحب ان نبقى على اتصال بشيء غير انساني .

and that is so deeply important to us.

و هذا الامر مهم جدا بالنسبة الينا.

What I think I've been talking about really is success and failure.

اظن ان ما كنت اتحدث عنه فعلا هو النجاح و الفشل .

And one of the interesting things about success

هنك امر مدهش يتعلق بالفشل

is that we think we know what it means.

هو اننا نظن اننا نعرف معنى النجاح.

If I said that there's somebody behind the screen who's very successful,

اذا قلت لكم انه هناك شخص خلف الشاشة

وهو ناجحٌ جدا جدا .. فإن عدة افكار سوف تخطر على بالكم على الفور

certain ideas would immediately come to mind.

You'd think that person might have made a lot of money,

سوف تجزمون ان هذا الشخص على الاغلب يملك الكثير من المال

وقد نجح في مجال ما من المجالات

achieved renown in some field.

My own theory of success --

أما عن نظريتي الخاصة بالنجاح .. وأنا احد الاشخاص

I'm somebody who's very interested in success,

المهتمين جدا بموضوع النجاح .. واريد ان اكون ناجحاً

I really want to be successful,

always thinking, how can I be more successful?

وانا افكر دوما بالسؤال " كيف اكون ناجحاً اكثر ؟ "

But as I get older, I'm also very nuanced about what that word "success" might mean.

ولكن وانا أكبر في العمر .. اصبحت مهتماً أكثر

بالمعنى الحقيقي لكلمة " نجاح "

Here's an insight that I've had about success:

وهذه فكرة عما اظنه عن النجاح

أولا لا يمكنك ان تكون ناجحا في كل شيء

You can't be successful at everything.

We hear a lot of talk about work-life balance.

صحيح اننا سمعنا الكثير عن النجاح المتوازن في العمل والحياة

Nonsense.

ولكن هذا غير صحيح .. اذ لا يمكنك النجاح تماما في المجالين

You can't have it all. You can't.

So any vision of success has to admit what it's losing out on,

لذا اي مفهوم عن النجاح

يجب ان يتضمن خسارة شيء آخر في المقابل

where the element of loss is.

أي يتضمن مفهوم النجاح عنصر خسارة ضمنه

And I think any wise life will accept,

واعتقد ان اي حياة " ذكية " سوف تتقبل

as I say, that there is going to be an element where we're not succeeding.

كما اقول وجود عنصر من عناصرها لايمكن وصفه بالناجح

And the thing about a successful life is that a lot of the time,

والشيء الآخر عن الحياة الناجحة

هو انه في معظم الاحيان .. مفهومنا عن

our ideas of what it would mean to live successfully are not our own.

ماذا تعني الحياة الناجحة هو ليس مفهومنا الخاص بنا

They're sucked in from other people;

فقد قمنا بتبنيه من قبل الآخرين

chiefly, if you're a man, your father, and if you're a woman, your mother.

بصورة عامة .. إن كنت رجلاً .. فسوف تتبنى مفهوم والدك للنجاح

وان كنت أُنثى سوف تتبنين مفهوم والدتك للنجاح

Psychoanalysis has been drumming home this message for about 80 years.

والطب النفسي ينشر هذا المفهوم يمنة ويسرة منذ 80 عام

No one's quite listening hard enough, but I very much believe it's true.

ولم يستمع احدٌ بما فيه الكفاية حتى اليوم .. ولكني أؤمن بهذا جداً

And we also suck in messages from everything from the television,

بالاضافة إلى اننا نتبنى أيضاً ذلك المفهوم

من كل شيء .. من التلفاز إلى الاعلانات

to advertising, to marketing, etc.

الى المنتجات المسوقة .. إلخ

These are hugely powerful forces

وهذه الوسائل مقنعة بشدة

that define what we want and how we view ourselves.

فهي تحدد مالذي نريده .. وكيف نريد أن نرى أنفسنا

When we're told that banking is a very respectable profession,

فعندما يُقال لنا ان العمل في المصارف هو مهنة محترمة جدا

a lot of us want to go into banking.

فجميعنا سوف ينساق الى الرغبة بالعمل في المصارف

When banking is no longer so respectable, we lose interest in banking.

وعندما لا يغدو العمل فيها محترما .. فنحن نفقد الاهتمام به

We are highly open to suggestion.

فنحن جميعا منفتحون جدا على الاقتراحات

So what I want to argue for is not that we should give up

والذي أريد أن أُحاجج فيه .. هو ليس ان نتخلى عن

on our ideas of success,

مفاهيمنا عن النجاح

but we should make sure that they are our own.

انما علينا ان نتاكد ان مفاهيمنا عن النجاح هي مفاهيمنا الشخصية

We should focus in on our ideas,

حيث علينا ان نفكر بافكارنا نحن

and make sure that we own them;

ونتاكد تماما اننا نحن الذين نريدها ونحن الذين صنعناها

that we are truly the authors of our own ambitions.

أي اننا نحن صناعُ طموحاتنا ..

Because it's bad enough not getting what you want,

لانه من السيء ان لا تحصل على ما تريد

ولكن الاسوء من هذا ان تكون لديك فكرة

but it's even worse to have an idea of what it is you want,

عما تريد .. وفي نهاية تلك الرحلة خلف تلك الفكرة

and find out, at the end of the journey,

that it isn't, in fact, what you wanted all along.

تجد نفسك قد لاحقت الفكرة الخاطئة .. لانها لم تكن فعلا ما تريد

So, I'm going to end it there.

وسوف انهي الفكرة هنا

But what I really want to stress is: by all means, success, yes.

ولكن أريد أن اشدد

بكل المعاني على النجاح

But let's accept the strangeness of some of our ideas.

وعلى تقبل غرابة بعض افكارنا عنه

Let's probe away at our notions of success.

واشدد على وجوب التحقق من مفاهيمنا عن النجاح

Let's make sure our ideas of success are truly our own.

واشدد على ضرورة التأكد من ان مفاهيمنا عن النجاح هي مفاهيمنا الخاصة وليست المكتسبة

But how do you reconcile this idea

of it being bad to think of someone as a "loser,"

with the idea that a lot of people like, of seizing control of your life,

and that a society that encourages that,

perhaps has to have some winners and losers?

Alain De Botton: Yes, I think it's merely the randomness

of the winning and losing process that I want to stress,

because the emphasis nowadays is so much on the justice of everything,

and politicians always talk about justice.

Now I'm a firm believer in justice, I just think that it's impossible.

وانا الان مقتنع تماما بمفهوم العادلة .. ولكن اعتقد ان تحقيقها بصورة تامة امرٌ مستحيل

So we should do everything we can to pursue it,

لذا يتوجب علينا فعل كل ما يمكن فعله

ويتجوب علينا التدافع لتحقيقها

but we should always remember that whoever is facing us,

وفي نهاية اليوم علينا دوما ان نتذكر

ان كل الاشخاص الذين قابلناهم .. وما حدث لهم في حياتهم بأكمله

whatever has happened in their lives,

there will be a strong element of the haphazard.

That's what I'm trying to leave room for;

otherwise, it can get quite claustrophobic.

with a successful economy?

Or do you think that you can't,

but it doesn't matter that much that we're putting too much emphasis on that?

لانه لا يهم ان كنا نركز كثيرا على تلك المفاهيم او لا . فهي واقعية

AB: The nightmare thought

is that frightening people is the best way to get work out of them,

الذي يخيف الناس اليوم .. هو الطريقة المثلى لحثهم على القيام باكبر قدر ممكن من الاعمال

and that somehow the crueler the environment,

وهذا بصورة ما هو ما يميز بيئتنا القاسية اليوم

the more people will rise to the challenge.

فالكثير من الناس سوف تخرج لتحديك

You want to think, who would you like as your ideal dad?

أحيانا الفرد يريد ان يفكر .. من يا ترى سيكون الوالد المثالي ..

And your ideal dad is somebody who is tough but gentle.

ان الوالد المثالي هو الوالد الشديد ولكنه الرحيم في نفس الوقت

And it's a very hard line to make.

وهذا امرٌ يصعب الحصول عليه

We need fathers, as it were, the exemplary father figures in society,

نحن نحتاج أباء , كما كانوا في الماضي , أباء يمكن الاقتداء بهم

avoiding the two extremes,

أباء يتجنبون المبالغة في

which is the authoritarian disciplinarian on the one hand,

في الاستبداد والانضباط من جهة

and on the other, the lax, no-rules option.

والمبالغة في التراخي وعدم فرض القواعد من جهة أُخرى
