And I would like to tell you a few personal stories

about what I like to call "the danger of the single story."

I grew up on a university campus in eastern Nigeria.

My mother says that I started reading at the age of two,

دایکم ئەیوت کە لە تەمەنی دوو ساڵیدا دەستم بە خوێندنەوە کردووە،

although I think four is probably close to the truth.

So I was an early reader,

کەواتە من خوێنەرێکی کۆنم، وە ئەوەی دەمخوێندەوە

and what I read were British and American children's books.

کتێبی منداڵانی بەریتانی و ئەمەریکی بوو

I was also an early writer,

وە هەروەها نوسەرێکی کۆنیشم

and when I began to write, at about the age of seven,

کاتێك دەستم بە نوسین کرد، نزیکەی حەوت ساڵ دەبووم

stories in pencil with crayon illustrations

چیرۆکەکان بە قەڵەمی ڕەنگاوڕەنگ ڕووندەکرانەوە

that my poor mother was obligated to read,

کە دایکە داماوەکەم ناچار بوو بیخوێنێتەوە

I wrote exactly the kinds of stories I was reading:

بەتەواوی ئەو جۆرە چیرۆکانەم دەنوسی کە دەم خوێندەوە

All my characters were white and blue-eyed,

هەموو کەسایەتییەکان سپی بوون و دوو چاوی شینیان هەبوو

they played in the snow,

لە ناو بەفردا یارییان دەکرد

they ate apples,

سێویان دەخوارد

(Laughter)

وە دەربارەی کەشوهەوا زۆر قسەیان دەکرد

and they talked a lot about the weather,

چەند جوان بوو

how lovely it was that the sun had come out.

کاتێك کە خۆر هەڵدەهات

(Laughter)

Now, this despite the fact that I lived in Nigeria.

ئێستا، لەگەڵ ئەو ڕاستیەشدا کە من لە نێجیریا دەژیام

I had never been outside Nigeria.

هەرگیز نەچومەتە دەرەوەی نێجیریا

We didn't have snow, we ate mangoes,

بەفر نەدەباری، مانگۆمان دەخوارد، جۆرە میوەیەکە

and we never talked about the weather,

وە هەرگیز دەربارەی کەشوهەوا قسەمان نەکردووە

because there was no need to.

لەبەرئەوەی پێویستی نەدەکرد

My characters also drank a lot of ginger beer,

هەروەها کەسایەتییەکان خواردنەوەیەکی زۆری بیرەی (جەنجەفیل)یان دەخواردەوە

because the characters in the British books I read

لەبەرئەوەی ئەو کەسایەتیانەی لە کتێبە بەریتانیەکاندا خوێندمەوە

drank ginger beer.

بیرەی (جەنجەفیل)یان دەخواردەوە

Never mind that I had no idea what ginger beer was.

گرنگ نەبووە و هیچ بیرۆکەیەکم نەبووە کە بیرەی (جەنجەفیل)چی بوو

And for many years afterwards,

بۆ دوای چەند ساڵێك، ئارەزویەکی نا ئومێدانەم هەبووە

I would have a desperate desire to taste ginger beer.

بۆ تام کردنی بیرەی جەنجەفیل

But that is another story.

بەڵام ئەمە چیرۆکێکی ترە

What this demonstrates, I think,

ئەمەش ئەوە دەخاتە ڕوو ، بە بۆچوونی من

is how impressionable and vulnerable we are

چەند هەستیار و بێهێزین

in the face of a story,

لە ڕاستی چیرۆکەکاندا

particularly as children.

بەتایبەتی وەك منداڵان

Because all I had read were books in which characters were foreign,

لەبەرئەوەی هەموو ئەو کتێبانەی کە خوێندومەتەوە ئەوانە بوون

کە کارەکتەرەکانیان بیانی بوون

I had become convinced that books

باوەڕم بەوە هێنا کە کتێبەکان

by their very nature had to have foreigners in them

and had to be about things with which I could not personally identify.

Now, things changed when I discovered African books.

شتەکان گۆڕا کاتێك کتێبی ئەفەریقیم خوێندەوە

There weren't many of them available,

بەشێکی زۆر لەوانە بەردەست نەدەکەوتن، لەگەڵ ئەوەشدا

and they weren't quite as easy to find as the foreign books.

دۆزینەوەیان ئاسان نەبوو وەك کتێبە بیانییەکان

But because of writers like Chinua Achebe and Camara Laye,

I went through a mental shift in my perception of literature.

I realized that people like me,

girls with skin the color of chocolate,

could also exist in literature.

I started to write about things I recognized.

Now, I loved those American and British books I read.

ئێستا، ئەو کتێبە ئەمەریکی و بەریتانییانەم خۆش دەوێت کە خوێندومەتەوە

They stirred my imagination. They opened up new worlds for me.

ئەندێشەیان گۆڕیم. جیهانی تازەیان بۆ کردمەوە

But the unintended consequence

بەڵام سەرئەنجامەکەی

was that I did not know that people like me

ئەوە بوو کە من نەمدەزانی کەسانی وەک من

could exist in literature.

لە ئەدەبدا بوونیان هەیە

So what the discovery of African writers did for me was this:

کەواتە دۆزینەوەی نوسەرە ئەفەریقییەکان ئەمەی بۆ من کرد:

It saved me from having a single story of what books are.

پاراستیانم لە هەبوونی تەنها یەک چیرۆک

دەربارەی ئەوەی کتێب چییە

I come from a conventional, middle-class Nigerian family.

من لە خێزانێکی مامناوەندی نەریتی سادەی نێجیریاوە هاتووم

My father was a professor.

باوکم پڕۆفیسۆر بوو

My mother was an administrator.

دایکم بەڕێوەبەر بوو

And so we had, as was the norm,

live-in domestic help, who would often come from nearby rural villages.

So, the year I turned eight, we got a new house boy.

His name was Fide.

The only thing my mother told us about him was that his family was very poor.

تەنها شتێك کە دایکم پێی وتین دەربارەی ئەو

ئەوە بوو کە خێزانەکەیان زۆر هەژارە

My mother sent yams and rice, and our old clothes, to his family.

دایکم یام و برنجی بۆ دەناردن

هەروەها جلە کۆنەکانیشمانی دەنارد بۆ خانەوادەکەی

And when I didn't finish my dinner, my mother would say,

کاتێك نانی ئێوارەم تەواو نەدەکرد دایکم دەیوت

"Finish your food! Don't you know? People like Fide's family have nothing."

نانەکەت تەواو بکە! نازانیت؟ خەڵکانێك وەك خانەوادەکەی فیدی هیچیان نییە

So I felt enormous pity for Fide's family.

لەبەرئەوە هەستم بە بەزەیی زۆر دەکرد بەرامبەر خانەوادەکەی فیدی

Then one Saturday, we went to his village to visit,

پاشان شەممەیەك چوین بۆ لادێکەیان بۆ سەردان

and his mother showed us a beautifully patterned basket

دایکی شێوە سەبەتەیەکی جوانی پیشان داین

made of dyed raffia that his brother had made.

لە ڕیشاڵی رەنگ کراو دروستکرا بوو کە براکەی دروستی کردبوو

I was startled.

ڕاچڵەکیم

It had not occurred to me that anybody in his family

بە بیرمدا نەهاتبوو کە هیچ کەس لە خانەوادەکەی

could actually make something.

بتوانن شتێك دروست بکەن

All I had heard about them was how poor they were,

هەموو ئەوەی دەربارەی ئەوان بیستبووم ئەوە بوو کە ئەوان چەندە هەژارن

so that it had become impossible for me to see them as anything else but poor.

لەبەر ئەوە مەحاڵ بوو بوو لام کە ئەوان ببینم

Their poverty was my single story of them.

هەژاری ئەوان تاکە بابەتی چیرۆکەکەی من بوو دەربارەیان

Years later, I thought about this when I left Nigeria

ساڵانێک دواتر، بیرم لەوە دەکردەوە کاتێك نێجیریام بە جێ هێشت و

to go to university in the United States.

چوم بۆ زانکۆ لە وویلایەتە یەکگرتووەکان

I was 19.

١٩ ساڵ بووم.

My American roommate was shocked by me.

هاوژورە ئەمەریکییەکەم حەپەسابوو لە من

She asked where I had learned to speak English so well,

پرسیاری دەکرد لەکوێ فێر بووم کە ئاوا بەباشی قسە بکەم بە ئینگلیزی

and was confused when I said that Nigeria

شڵەژابوو کاتێك دەم وت کە نێجیریا

happened to have English as its official language.

زمانی ئینگلیزی زمانی ڕەسمی قسە کردنیانە

She asked if she could listen to what she called my "tribal music,"

داوای دەکرد ئەگەر بتوانێت گوێ لەوە بگرێت کە ئەو پێی دەوت مۆسیقای هۆزی

and was consequently very disappointed

بەم شێوەیە زۆر بێ هیوا دەبوو

when I produced my tape of Mariah Carey.

کاتێك شریتی مارییا کاریم لێدەدا

She assumed that I did not know how to use a stove.

وای دەزانی کە من نازانم

ئاگردان بەکار بهێنم

What struck me was this:

ئەوەی سەری سوڕماندم ئەوە بوو: ئەو بەداخەوە بوو بۆ من

She had felt sorry for me even before she saw me.

تەنانەت پێش ئەوەی منیشی بینیبێت

Her default position toward me, as an African,

ڕوانینی ئەو بۆ من ،وەك ئەفەریقییەك

was a kind of patronizing, well-meaning pity.

جۆرێک بوو لە خۆ بەزل زانین، بەزەیی

My roommate had a single story of Africa:

هاو ژوورەکەم تەنیایەک چیرۆکی هەبوو لەسەر ئەفەریقا

a single story of catastrophe.

چیرۆکێکی تەنیای کارەساتاوی

In this single story,

لەم چیرۆکە تەنیایەدا هیچ ڕێتێچونێک نەبوو

there was no possibility of Africans being similar to her in any way,

کە ئەفەریقییەکان وەک ئەو وابن، بە هەر شێوەیەک بێت

no possibility of feelings more complex than pity,

هیچ ڕێتێچونێك نییە کە هەستەکەی ئاڵۆزتر بێت لە بەزەیی

no possibility of a connection as human equals.

هیچ رێتێچونێك نییە لە بارەی یەکسانی مرۆڤەکانەوە

I must say that before I went to the U.S.,

پێویستە ئەوە بڵێم پێش ئەوەی بچم بۆ ویلایەتە یەکگرتووەکان

I didn't consciously identify as African.

هەستیارانە خۆم وەك ئەفەریقییەك نەناسیبوو

But in the U.S., whenever Africa came up, people turned to me.

بەڵام لە ویلایەتە یەکگرتووەکان هەرکاتێك وتووێژێك هەبوایە دەربارەی ئەفەریقا ،خەڵک ئاماژەیان بۆ من دەکرد

Never mind that I knew nothing about places like Namibia.

لە کاتێکدا من هیچ شتێكم نەدەزانی دەربارەی شوێنێك وەك نامیبیا

But I did come to embrace this new identity,

بەڵام من بۆ ئەوە نەهاتووم کە قایل ببم بەم ناسنامە تازەیەم

and in many ways I think of myself now as African.

لە زۆربەی ڕوەکانەوە بیرم لە خۆم دەکردەوە وەک ئەفەریقییەک.

Although I still get quite irritable when Africa is referred to as a country,

هەرچەندە هێشتا بە تەواوەتی توڕە دەبم کاتێك

کە ئاماژە بە ئەفەریقا دەکرێت وەك وڵاتێك

the most recent example being my otherwise wonderful flight

تازەترین نمونە بۆ ئەمە بریتیە لە گەشتێکی ئاسمانی سەیر

from Lagos two days ago,

in which there was an announcement on the Virgin flight

about the charity work in "India, Africa and other countries."

دەربارەی یارمەتی خێرخوازانە لە هند و ئەفریقا و وڵاتانی تر

(Laughter)

So, after I had spent some years in the U.S. as an African,

دوای ئەوەی چەند ساڵێکم بەسەر برد لە ویلایەتە یەکگرتووەکان وەک ئەفەریقییەک

I began to understand my roommate's response to me.

لە وەڵام دانەوەی هاوژوورەکەم تێئەگەشتم

If I had not grown up in Nigeria,

ئەگەر لە نێجیریا گەورە نەبومایە، وە ئەگەر ئەو شتانەی کە دەیزانم دەربارەی ئەفەریقا

and if all I knew about Africa were from popular images,

تەنها لە چەند وێنەیەکی باوەوە پێی ئاشنا بومایە،

I too would think that Africa was a place of beautiful landscapes,

هەروەها منیش بیرم لە ئەفەریقا دەکردەوە وەک ناوچەیەکی

دەشتایی جوان،وە شوێنی ئاژەڵە جوانەکان

beautiful animals,

and incomprehensible people,

لەگەڵ شوێنی خەڵکە تێنەگەیشتووەکان،

fighting senseless wars, dying of poverty and AIDS,

کە بە بێهەستانە دەجەنگێن و دەمرن بەهۆی برسێتی و ئایدزەوە

unable to speak for themselves

توانایان نیە کە بدوێن دەربارەی خۆیان

and waiting to be saved by a kind, white foreigner.

چاوەڕوانن تا ڕزگار دەکرێن

لەلایەن بیانییەکی سپی بەخشندەوە

I would see Africans in the same way that I,

ئەگەر وا بووایە ،ئەفەریقییەکانم بە هەمان شێوە دەبینی

as a child, had seen Fide's family.

کە من بە منداڵی خێزانەکەی فیدیم دەبینی

This single story of Africa ultimately comes, I think, from Western literature.

ئەم چیرۆکە ئەفەریقیە تەنیایە، وا هەست دەکەم لە ئەدەبیاتی ڕۆژئاواوە هاتبێت

Now, here is a quote from the writing of a London merchant called John Lok,

لێرەدا وتەیەک هەیە کە هی

بازرگانێکی لەندەنیە کە ناوی جۆن لۆکە

who sailed to west Africa in 1561

کە بەکەشتی چارۆکەدار ڕۆشتوە بۆ ڕۆژئاوای ئەفەریقا لە ساڵی ١٥٦١

and kept a fascinating account of his voyage.

زۆری ڕووداوەکانی گەشتەکەی پاراستووە

After referring to the black Africans as "beasts who have no houses,"

دوای ئەوە ئاماژەی دەکرد بۆ ئەفەریقیە ڕەشەکان

وەک ئەو وەحشانەی کە ماڵیان نیە

he writes, "They are also people without heads,

نوسیویەتی "هەروەها ئەوان خەڵکێکن کە ئەقڵیان نیە

having their mouth and eyes in their breasts."

دەم و چاویان لەسنگیاندایە

Now, I've laughed every time I've read this.

پێکەنینم دەهات هەرکاتێک کە ئەمەم دەخوێندەوە

And one must admire the imagination of John Lok.

پێویستە لەسەر یەکێک بیرۆکەکانی جۆن لۆک بەرز بنرخێنێت

But what is important about his writing

بەڵام ئەوەی گرنگە دەربارەی نوسینەکەی ئەوەیە کە

is that it represents the beginning

بنەمای

of a tradition of telling African stories in the West:

:دابونەریتی گێڕانەوەی چیرۆکە ئەفەریقییەکان لە ڕۆژ ئاوادا پێکدەهێنێت

A tradition of Sub-Saharan Africa as a place of negatives,

دابونەریتێک لە بیابانی لاوەکی ئەفریقا کە شوێنی شتە خراپەکانە

of difference, of darkness,

شتە جیاوازەکان. شوێنی تاریکییەکان

of people who, in the words of the wonderful poet Rudyard Kipling,

شوێنی ئەو کەسانەی، وەک شاعیر

ڕودیارد کیپلینگ بە وشە جوانەکانی دەڵێت

are "half devil, half child."

نیوە شەیتان و نیوە منداڵن

And so, I began to realize that my American roommate

بۆیە ئەوەم بۆ دەرکەوت کە هاو ژوورە ئەمەریکییەکەم

must have throughout her life

بەدرێژایی ژیانی

seen and heard different versions of this single story,

بە شێوازی جیاواز ئەم تەنها چیرۆکەی

بیستووە و بینیوە

as had a professor,

هەروەک ئەو پرۆفیسۆرەی

who once told me that my novel was not "authentically African."

کە جارێکیان پێی وتم ڕٶمانەکەم " ئەفەریقی ڕەسەن " نییە

Now, I was quite willing to contend

تەواو هیوادار بوم کە بڵێم کۆمەڵێک شتی

that there were a number of things wrong with the novel,

هەڵە هەیە لە ڕۆمانەکەدا

that it had failed in a number of places,

هەڵەی تێدا بوو لە کۆمەڵێک شوێندا

but I had not quite imagined that it had failed

بەڵام من تەواو بڕوام نەدەکرد کە ئەوە هەڵە بووبێت

at achieving something called African authenticity.

لە بەدەست هێنانی شتێک کە پێی دەوترا ئەفریقییە ڕەسەنەکان

In fact, I did not know what African authenticity was.

لە ڕاستیدا نەم دەزانی

ئەفریقییە ڕەسەنەکان چی بوون

The professor told me that my characters were too much like him,

پڕۆفیسەرەکەم ئەوەی پێ وتم کە کەسایەتییەکان

زۆر لەو دەچن

an educated and middle-class man.

My characters drove cars.

کەسایەتییەکانم ئۆتۆمبێلییان لێدەخووڕی

They were not starving.

ئەوان لە برسا نەمردبوون

Therefore they were not authentically African.

لەبەر ئەوە ئەوان ئەفریقییە ڕەسەنەکان نین

But I must quickly add that I too am just as guilty

بەڵام پێویستە بەخێرایی ئەوەی بۆ زیاد بکەم کە منیش تاوانبارم

in the question of the single story.

لە پرسیارەکانی تاکە چیرۆکەکەدا

A few years ago, I visited Mexico from the U.S.

چەند ساڵێکی کەم لەمەو پێش گەشتم کرد لەئەمەریکاوە بەرەو مەکسیک

The political climate in the U.S. at the time was tense,

کەش و هەوای سیاسی لە ئەمەریکا لەو کاتەدا ئاڵۆز بوو

and there were debates going on about immigration.

چەند دەنگۆیەک هەبوو دەربارەی گفتوگۆ کردن لەسەر کۆچکردن

And, as often happens in America,

هەروەکو زۆربەی جار لە ئەمریکا ڕوو دەدات

immigration became synonymous with Mexicans.

کۆچکردن بەهەمان شێوە بوو لەگەڵ مەکسیکدا

There were endless stories of Mexicans

چیرۆکی بێکۆتا هەبوو لە مەکسیک

as people who were fleecing the healthcare system,

ئەو خەڵکەی لەوێ بوون

لەژێر سایەی سیستەمی تەندروستی و

sneaking across the border,

بەنهێنی بە سنورەکاندا دەپەڕینەوە

being arrested at the border, that sort of thing.

دەستگیر کردنیان لە سنور ،شتی تری لەم بابەتە

I remember walking around on my first day in Guadalajara,

بیرم دێت یەکەم ڕۆژ کە پیاسەم دەکرد لە گوادالاجارا

watching the people going to work,

سەیری خەڵکم دەکرد کە دەچوون بۆ ئیش

rolling up tortillas in the marketplace,

دەستیان دەکرد بە ژیانی خۆیان لە بازاڕەکاندا

smoking, laughing.

جگەرەیان دەکێشا، پێدەکەنین

I remember first feeling slight surprise.

بیرمە یەکەم جار هەستم بە کەمێک سەرسوڕمان دەکرد

And then, I was overwhelmed with shame.

دواتر لە شەرما نقوم بوو بووم

I realized that I had been so immersed in the media coverage of Mexicans

بۆم دەرکەوت کە زۆر نقوم بووم

لەناو میدیاکانی مەکسیک دا

that they had become one thing in my mind,

ئەوان بوو بوونە یەک یەک شت لە مێشکمدا

the abject immigrant.

کە ئەویش کۆچەرە پیسەکان بوون

I had bought into the single story of Mexicans

تەنها چیرۆکێکم لا دروست بوو لەسەر مەکسیکییەکان

and I could not have been more ashamed of myself.

زۆر زۆر شەرمم لەخۆم دەکرد

So that is how to create a single story,

کەواتە ئاوا تاکە چیرۆکێک دروست دەکرێت

show a people as one thing,

نیشانی خەڵکێکی بدەیت وەک یەک شت

as only one thing,

تەنها وەک یەک شت

over and over again,

دووبارە و دووبارە

and that is what they become.

ئەوە ئەو شتە بوو کە پێی دەگەیشتن

It is impossible to talk about the single story

شتێکی مەحاڵە باسی تەنها چیرۆکێک بکەیت

without talking about power.

بە بێ ئەوەی قسە بکەیت دەربارەی هێز

There is a word, an Igbo word,

وشەیەک هەیە، وشەی ئیگبۆیی

that I think about whenever I think about the power structures of the world,

کە بیری لێدەکەمەوە هەموو جارێک کە بیر لە

پێکهاتەی هێز لە جیهاندا دەکەمەوە. ئەو وشەیە "نکالی" یە

and it is "nkali."

It's a noun that loosely translates to "to be greater than another."

ناوێکە بە هەڕەمەکی وەردەگێڕدرێت

بۆ "ئەوەی مەزن تر بیت لە یەکێکی تر"

Like our economic and political worlds,

وەکو جیهانی ئابوری و سیاسی ئێمە

stories too are defined by the principle of nkali:

چیرۆکەکانیش بەپێی

یاساکانی نکالی پێناس دەکرێن

How they are told, who tells them,

چۆن دەگێڕدرێنەوە ، کێ دەیانگێڕێتەوە

when they're told, how many stories are told,

کاتێک پێیان وتراوە، چیرۆکێکی زۆریان پێ وتراوە

are really dependent on power.

دەکەوێتەوە سەر هێز

Power is the ability not just to tell the story of another person,

هێز توانایەکە نەک تەنها بۆ گێڕانەوەی چیرۆکی کەسێکی تر

but to make it the definitive story of that person.

بەڵکو بۆ تەواو کردنی چیرۆکی ئەو کەسەیە

The Palestinian poet Mourid Barghouti writes

شاعیری فەلەستینی مورید بارغوثی دەنوسێت

that if you want to dispossess a people,

ئەگەر بتەوێت شتێک لە کەسێک بسەنیت

the simplest way to do it is to tell their story

سادەترین ڕێگە بۆ ئەنجام دانی ئەو کارە گێڕانەوەی چیرۆکی ئەوانە

and to start with, "secondly."

وە دەستپێکردن بە 'دووەم'

Start the story with the arrows of the Native Americans,

This is not because I am a better person than that student,

but because of America's cultural and economic power,

I had many stories of America.

I had read Tyler and Updike and Steinbeck and Gaitskill.

I did not have a single story of America.

When I learned, some years ago,

that writers were expected to have had really unhappy childhoods

I began to think about how I could invent horrible things my parents had done to me.

But the truth is that I had a very happy childhood,

because our fire trucks did not have water.

I grew up under repressive military governments

من گەورە بووم لە ژێر سایەی حوکومەتێکی سەربازی زۆرداردا

that devalued education,

so that sometimes, my parents were not paid their salaries.

And so, as a child, I saw jam disappear from the breakfast table,

then bread became too expensive,

And most of all, a kind of normalized political fear

لە سەروو هەموو ئەمانەشەوە جۆرێک لە ترساندنی سیاسی

invaded our lives.

All of these stories make me who I am.

هەموو ئەم چیرۆکانە منیان دروست کرد وە وایان لێ کردم کە بزانم من کێم

But to insist on only these negative stories

بەڵام سوور بوون تەنها لەسەر ئەم هەموو چیرۆکە ناخۆشانە

is to flatten my experience

وایان لێ کردم کە بیرۆکەکانم ساف بکەم

and to overlook the many other stories that formed me.

وە سەیری ژمارەیەکی زۆر لە چیرۆکی تر بکەم

کە منیان پێکهێناوە

The single story creates stereotypes,

چیرۆکە تەنیاییەکە ئەو تاکە بیرۆکانە دروست دەکات

and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue,

کێشەی دووبارەبوونەوەی بیرۆکەکانیش

ئەوە نییە کە ڕاست نین

but that they are incomplete.

بەڵکوو ناتەواوی بیرۆکەکانە

They make one story become the only story.

یەک چیرۆک دەکەنە تاکە چیرۆک

Of course, Africa is a continent full of catastrophes:

بێگومان ئەفریقا کیشوەرێکە کە پڕە لە کارەسات

There are immense ones, such as the horrific rapes in Congo

یەکێک لەو کارەساتە گەورانە ئەو دەسترێژییە مەترسیدارە بوو کە لە کۆنگۆ ڕووی دا

and depressing ones,

وە ئەو ڕاستییەی کە

such as the fact that 5,000 people apply for one job vacancy in Nigeria.

٥٠٠٠ خەڵک داواکارییان پێشکەش کردبوو بۆ یەک ئیشی بێ مانا لە نێجیریا

But there are other stories that are not about catastrophe,

بەڵام چیرۆکی تر هەیە کە دەربارەی کارەسات نین

and it is very important, it is just as important, to talk about them.

وە ئەوەش شتێکی زۆر گرنگە، هەر وەک چۆن گرنگە کە دەربارەیان قسە بکەین

I've always felt that it is impossible

هەمیشە هەستم وا بووە کە مەحاڵە

to engage properly with a place or a person

کە بە تەواوی تێکەڵی شوێنێک یان کەسێک ببیت

without engaging with all of the stories of that place and that person.

بێ ئەوەی تێکەڵی چیرۆکەکانی ئەو شوێنە یان ئەو کەسە ببیت

The consequence of the single story is this:

سەرەنجامی تاکە چیرۆک

It robs people of dignity.

ئەمەیە: دزینی ئازادی و شکۆداری خەڵکە

It makes our recognition of our equal humanity difficult.

وامان لێ دەکات کە بە زەحمەت لە یەکسانی مرۆڤایەتی تێ بگەین

It emphasizes how we are different rather than how we are similar.

ئەوەش دووپات دەکاتەوە کە ئێمە جیاوازین

وەک لەوەی کە لەیەک بچین

So what if before my Mexican trip,

کەواتە چی دەبوو ئەگەر پێش گەشتەکەم بۆ مەکسیک

I had followed the immigration debate from both sides,

بە دوادا چونم بکردایە بۆ گفتوگۆ کردن لەسەر کۆچکردن لە هەردوو

the U.S. and the Mexican?

وڵاتی ئەمریکا و مەکسیك؟

What if my mother had told us that Fide's family was poor

یاخود چی دەبوو ئەگەر دایکم بە ئێمەی بوتایە کە خێزانی فیدی هەژارن

and hardworking?

لەگەڵ ئەوەشدا زۆر ئیش دەکەن؟

What if we had an African television network

یاخود چی دەبوو ئەگەر ئێمە کەناڵێکی ئەفریقی جیهانیمان هەبوایە

that broadcast diverse African stories all over the world?

کە هەموو چیرۆکە جیاوازەکانی ئەفریقای پەخش بکردایە بۆ هەموو جیهان

What the Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe calls "a balance of stories."

چی دەبوو ئەگەر نوسەری نێجیری چینوا ئاچیبی ناوی کتێبەکەی

What if my roommate knew about my Nigerian publisher,

چی دەبوو ئەگەر هاوژورەکەم شتێکی بزانییایە دەربارەی بڵاوکەرە نێجیریەکە

a remarkable man who left his job in a bank

ئەو پیاوە بەتوانایەی کارەکەی بەجێ هێشت لە بانک

to follow his dream and start a publishing house?

Now, the conventional wisdom was that Nigerians don't read literature.

ژیرییە نەریتییەکە ئەوە بوو کە نێیجیرییەکان ئەدەب ناخوێننەوە

He disagreed.

موکاتا ڕازی نەبوو بەمە. ئەو هەستی کرد

He felt that people who could read, would read,

ئەوانەی کە توانای خوێندنەوەیان هەیە دەخوێننەوە

if you made literature affordable and available to them.

Shortly after he published my first novel,

ماوەیەکی کەم دوای ئەوەی یەکەم ڕۆمانمی بڵاوکردەوە

I went to a TV station in Lagos to do an interview,

ڕۆشتم بۆ کەناڵێکی تەلەفیزۆنی لە لاگۆس بۆ چاو پێکەوتنێک

and a woman who worked there as a messenger came up to me and said,

ژنێک کە لەوێ ئیشی دەکرد وەک پەیامنێرێک هات بۆ لام و پێی وتم

"I really liked your novel. I didn't like the ending.

لە ڕاستیدا من زۆر حەزم لە ڕۆمانەکەت بوو بەڵام حەزم لە کۆتاییەکەی نەبوو

Now, you must write a sequel, and this is what will happen ..."

پێویستە چیرۆکی بێ کۆتایی بنوسیت، ئەمە ئەوەیە کە ڕوو دەدات

And she went on to tell me what to write in the sequel.

بەردەوام بوو لە قسە کردن و پێی وتم چی بنووسم لە کۆتاییەکەیدا

I was not only charmed, I was very moved.

من تەنها شەیدای بیرۆکەکانی نەبووم بەڵکو زۆریش لە ژێر کاریگەریدا بووم

Here was a woman, part of the ordinary masses of Nigerians,

لێرەدا ئەو ژنە بەشێک بوو لە خەڵکی ئاسایی نێجیریا

who were not supposed to be readers.

کە پێشبینی نەدەکرا خوێندەوار بن

She had not only read the book,

ئەو تەنها کتێبەکەی نەخوێندبووەوە بەڵکو خاوەندارێتی وەرگرتبوو

but she had taken ownership of it

بەلایەوە ئاسایی بوو کە پێم بڵێت

and felt justified in telling me what to write in the sequel.

چی بنووسم لە کۆتایی چیرۆکەکەدا

Now, what if my roommate knew about my friend Funmi Iyanda,

چی دەبوو ئەگەر هاوژوورەکەم دەربارەی هاوڕێکەم فومی ئۆندا بیزانیایە

a fearless woman who hosts a TV show in Lagos,

and is determined to tell the stories that we prefer to forget?

who recently went to court in Nigeria to challenge a ridiculous law

کە بەم دواییانە ڕۆشت بۆ دادگا لە نایجیریا

بۆ بەرەنگار بوونەوەوی یاسا بێماناکان

that required women to get their husband's consent

کە دەبوو ژنەکان ڕەزامەندی هاوسەرەکانیان بەدەست بهێنن پێش ئەوەی کە

before renewing their passports?

What if my roommate knew about Nollywood,

What if my roommate knew about my wonderfully ambitious hair braider,

who has just started her own business selling hair extensions?

کەتازە دەستی کردووە بە بازرگانی فرۆشتنی قژی درێژکراو؟

Or about the millions of other Nigerians who start businesses and sometimes fail,

یاخود دەربارەی ملیۆنەها خەڵکی تری نێجیری

but continue to nurse ambition?

Every time I am home I am confronted

هەموو جارێک کە لە ماڵەوە دەبم ڕوبەڕوو دەبمەوە لەگەڵ

with the usual sources of irritation for most Nigerians:

:سەرچاوە هەمیشەییەکانی بێزارکردن بۆ زۆربەی نایجیرییەکان

our failed infrastructure, our failed government,

داڕوخانی ژێرخانی ئابوریمان، شکست هێنانی حوکومەتەکەمان

but also by the incredible resilience

بەڵام لەگەڵ ئەوەشدا بە شێوەیەکی سەرسوڕهێنەر خەڵک بێدەنگن و

of people who thrive despite the government,

گەشە دەکەن،بێ هاریکاری حوکومەتەکە

rather than because of it.

لەبری ئەوەی بەهۆی حکومەتەکەیانەوە بێت

I teach writing workshops in Lagos every summer,

خەڵک فێری نوسین دەکەم ل لاگۆس هەموو هاوینێک

and it is amazing to me how many people apply,

زۆر شتێکی دڵ خۆش کەرە بۆ من کە خەڵکێکی زۆر دێن و داواکاری دەکەن

how many people are eager to write,

خەڵکێکی زۆریش بە پەرۆشن بۆ نوسین

to tell stories.

بۆ ئەوەی چیرۆکەکانیان بگێڕنەوە

My Nigerian publisher and I have just started a non-profit

من و بڵاو کەرە نێجیرییەکەم دەستمان کرد بە دروست کردنی دامەزراوەیەکی قازانج نەویست

called Farafina Trust,

کە ناوی متمانەی فارافینایە

and we have big dreams of building libraries

ئێمە خەونی گەورەمان هەیە بۆ بنیاد نانی کتێب خانەکان و

and refurbishing libraries that already exist

جوان کردن و ئاوەدان کردنەوەی کتێب خانەکان کە هەن

and providing books for state schools

بۆ ئەوەی کتێبەکان دابین بکەین بۆ خوێندنگاکان

that don't have anything in their libraries,

کە هیچ شتێکیان نییە لە کتیب خانەکانیاندا

and also of organizing lots and lots of workshops,

وە هەروەها ڕێکخستنی کاری زیاتر

in reading and writing,

لە بواری خوێندنەوە و نووسیندا

for all the people who are eager to tell our many stories.

بۆ هەموو ئەو کەسانەی کە بەپەرۆشن بۆ گێڕانەوەی چیرۆکەکانمان

Stories matter.

چیرۆکەکان گرنگن

Many stories matter.

ژمارەیەکی زۆر لە چیرۆکەکان گرنگن

Stories have been used to dispossess and to malign,

ئەو چیرۆکانەی کە بەکار هێنراون بۆ لێسەندنەوە و ڕق لێ هەڵگرتن

but stories can also be used to empower and to humanize.

بەڵام چیرۆکەکان دەتوانن مرۆڤەکان بەهێز بکەن و بیانکەن بە مرۆڤ

Stories can break the dignity of a people,

چیرۆکەکان دەتوانن ئازادی و شکۆمەندی خەڵکێک تێک بشکێنن

but stories can also repair that broken dignity.

بەڵام لەلایەکی ترەوە چیرۆکەکان دەتوانن ئازادی و شکۆمەندییەکان چاک بکەنەوە

The American writer Alice Walker wrote this

نوسەری ئەمریکی ئەلیس والکەر ئەمەی نوسیوە

about her Southern relatives who had moved to the North.

دەربارەی خزمەکانی کە لە باشور بوون

دواتر ڕۆشتبوون بەرەو باکور

She introduced them to a book about

خۆی بە وان ناساند لە کتیبێکدا کە دەربارەی

the Southern life that they had left behind.

:ژیانی ئەوان لە باشوور کە بەجێیان هێشتووە

"They sat around, reading the book themselves,

ئەوان لە دەوروپشتی یەکتر دانیشتبوون و کتێبیان بۆ خۆیان دەخوێندەوە

listening to me read the book, and a kind of paradise was regained."

گوێیان لە من دەگرت کاتێک کتێبم دەخوێندەوە، ئەوە وەک ئەوە وابوو کە بەهەشتێک دەست کەوتبێت

I would like to end with this thought:

حەزدەکەم کۆتایی ئەم گفتوگۆیە بەم بیرۆکەیە بهێنم:

That when we reject the single story,

کاتێک ئێمە تاکە چیرۆکەکە ڕەت دەکەینەوە

when we realize that there is never a single story

کاتێک تێ دەگەین کە هەرگیز تەنها یەک چیرۆک نییە

about any place,

دەربارەی شوێنێک

we regain a kind of paradise.
