I was only four years old

when I saw my mother load a washing machine

کاتێک بینیم دایکم جلی ئەکردە ناو جلشۆرەکەوە

for the very first time in her life.

That was a great day for my mother.

ئەوە ڕۆژێکی گرنگ بوو بۆ دایکم.

My mother and father had been saving money for years

دایکم و باوکم چەندین ساڵبوو پارەیان کۆئەکردەوە بۆ ئەوەی

to be able to buy that machine,

بتوانن ئەو ئامێرە بکڕن، و

and the first day it was going to be used,

یەکەم ڕۆژ کە بەکارمان ئەهێنا،

even Grandma was invited to see the machine.

نەنکیشم بانگێشت کرابوو بۆ بینینی ئامێرەکە.

And Grandma was even more excited.

نەنکم زیاتریش بەپەرۆش بوو.

Throughout her life, she had been heating water with firewood,

and she had hand-washed laundry for seven children.

بە دەست جلی حەوت منداڵی شتووە.

And now, she was going to watch electricity do that work.

ئێستاش، بەچاوی خۆی ئەیبینی کارەبا ئەو کارەی ئەکرد.

My mother carefully opened the door,

دایکم بە وریاییەوە دەرگاکەی کردەوە، و

and she loaded the laundry into the machine,

جلەکانی کردە ناو ئامێرەکەوە،

like this.

بەم شێوەیە.

And then, when she closed the door,

ئینجا، دەرگاکەی داخستەوە،

Grandma said, "No, no, no, no!

نەنکم وتی، "نا، نا، نا، نا!

Let me! Let me push the button!"

من! با من پەنجە بە دووگمەکەیا بنێم!"

(Laughter)

And Grandma pushed the button,

نەنکیشم پەنجەی بە دووگمەکەیا نا، و

and she said, "Oh, fantastic!

وتی، "ئاه سەرسوڕهێنەرە!

I want to see this! Give me a chair! Give me a chair! I want to see it,"

ئەمەوێ ئەمە ببینم! کورسییەکم بەنێ! کورسییەکم بەنێ! ئەمەوێ بیبینم،"

and she sat down in front of the machine,

and she watched the entire washing program.

She was mesmerized.

To my grandmother, the washing machine was a miracle.

Today, in Sweden and other rich countries,

ئەمڕۆ، لە سوید و وڵاتە دەوڵەمەندەکانی تر،

people are using so many different machines.

خەڵک چەندین ئامێری هەمەجۆر بەکاردێنن.

Look -- the homes are full of machines.

سەیرکەن -- ماڵەکان پڕن لە ئامێر

I can't even name them all.

ناتوانم تەنانەت ناوی هەمووشیان بێنم.

And they also, when they want to travel,

هەروەها، کە ئەشیانەوێت گەشت بکەن،

they use flying machines

ئامێری فڕین بەکاردێنن

that can take them to remote destinations.

کە دەتوانێت بیانبات بۆ شوێنی دوورەدەست.

And yet, in the world,

لەگەڵ ئەوەشدا، لە جیهاندا،

there are so many people who still heat the water on fire,

هێشتا خەڵکێکی زۆر هەیە کە بە ئاگر ئاو گەرم ئەکات، و

and they cook their food on fire.

لەسەر ئاگر خواردن دروست ئەکەن.

Sometimes they don't even have enough food.

هەندێک جار تەنانەت خواردنی پێویستیشیان نییە. و

And they live below the poverty line.

لەژێر هێڵی هەژارییەوە ئەژین.

There are two billion fellow human beings

دوو ملیار مرۆڤ هەیە

who live on less than two dollars a day.

ڕۆژی لەسەر کەمتر لە ٢ دۆلار ئەژین. و

And the richest people over there -- there's one billion people,

دەوڵەمەندترین کەسەکانیش -- کە یەک ملیار کەسن، و

and they live above what I call the "air line" --

لەسەروو ئەو هێڵەوە ئەژین ئەوەی من پێی ئەڵێم "هێڵی ئاسمانی" --

because they spend more than 80 dollars a day

on their consumption.

But this is just one, two, three billion people,

who live in between the poverty and the air line.

They have electricity,

but the question is: How many have washing machines?

بەڵام پرسیارەکە ئەوەیە: چەندێکیان جلشۆریان هەیە؟

I've done the scrutiny of market data, and I've found that, indeed,

کارە قورسەکەی پیاچوونەوە بە زانیارییەکانی بازاڕم کرد و بۆم دەرکەوت،

the washing machine has penetrated below the air line,

بێگومان جلشۆر خوار هێڵی ئاسمانیشی بڕیوە، و

and today, there's an additional one billion people out there

ئەمڕۆ، یەک ملیار کەسی تر هەیە

who live above the "wash line."

کە لەسەروو "هێڵی شتن"ەوە ئەژین.

And they consume for more than 40 dollars per day.

So two billion have access to washing machines.

And the remaining five billion --

how do they wash?

Or, to be more precise,

یان، ورد تر بین،

how do most of the women in the world wash?

چۆن زۆربەی ژنانی جیهان جل ئەشۆن؟

Because it remains the hard work for women to wash.

چونکە هێشتا بۆ ژن جل شتن کارێکی قورسە.

They wash like this: by hand.

بەم شێوەیە ئەیشۆن: بە دەست.

It's hard, time-consuming labor,

قورسە، کاتێکی زۆری ئەوێت،

which they have to do for hours every week.

کە ئەبێت هەفتانە بۆ چەندین کاتژمێر بیکەن. و

And sometimes they also have to bring water from far away

هەندێک جار ئەبێت لە دوورەوە ئاو بێنن

to do the laundry at home,

بۆ ئەوەی لە ماڵەوە جل بشۆن،

or they have to bring the laundry away to a stream far off.

یان ئەوەتا جلەکان بەرن بۆ جۆگەیەک لە شوێنێکی دوور. و

And they want the washing machine.

جلشۆریان ئەوێت.

They don't want to spend such a large part of their life

نایانەوێت بەشێکی گەورەی ژیانیان

doing this hard work

لەم کارە قورسەیا بەسەر بەرن

with so relatively low productivity.

کە ئاستی بەرهەمهێنانی زۆر کەمە.

And there's nothing different in their wish

هیچ جیاوازییەکیش نییە لە خواستەکەی ئەوان و

than it was for my grandma.

خواستەکەی نەنکی خۆمدا.

Look here, two generations ago in Sweden --

سەیری ئێرەکەن، دوو نەوەی پێشوو لە سوید --

picking water from the stream,

هێنانی ئاو لە جۆگەکە،

heating with firewood and washing like that.

گەرمکردنی بە ئاگری دار و شتن بەم شێوەیە.

They want the washing machine in exactly the same way.

ڕێک بە هەمان شێوە جلشۆرەکەیان ئەوێت.

But when I lecture to environmentally concerned students,

بەڵام کاتێک وانە ئەڵێمەوە بە خوێندکارەکانی گرنگی بە ژینگە ئەیەن،

they tell me, "No, everybody in the world cannot have cars and washing machines."

پێم ئەڵێن، "نەخێر، ناکرێت هەمووان لە جیهاندا ئوتومبێل و جلشۆریان هەبێت.'

How can we tell this woman

چۆن بەم ژنە بڵێین

that she isn't going to have a washing machine?

جلشۆری بۆ بەردەست نابێت؟

And then I ask my students -- over the last two years, I've asked --

ئینجا لە خوێندکارەکانم ئەپرسم -- بەدرێژایی دوو ساڵی ڕابردوو، پرسیومە --

"How many of you don't use a car?"

"چەندێک لە ئێوە ئوتومبێل بەکارناهێنن؟"

And some of them proudly raise their hand and say, "I don't use a car."

هەندێکیشیان بە شانازییەوە دەستیان بەرز ئەکەنەوە و ئەڵێن، "من بەکاریناهێنم."

And then I put the really tough question:

ئینجا پرسیارە زۆر قورسەکە ئەکەم:

"How many of you hand-wash your jeans and your bedsheets?"

"چەندێک لە ئێوە بەدەست کاوبۆکانی و سەر جێگەکانی ئەشوات؟"

And no one raised their hand.

کەس دەست بەرزناکاتەوە.

Even the hardcore in the green movement use washing machines.

تەنانەت توندڕەوەکانی هەڵمەتی سەوزیش جلشۆر بەکاردێنن.

(Laughter)

So how come [this is] something that everyone uses

کەواتە چۆن ئەکرێت ئەمە شتێک بێت هەمووان بەکاریبێنن و

and they think others will not stop it?

وا بیر بکەنەوە خەڵکی تر بەکاریناهێنن؟

What is special with this?

چی تایبەتە لەمەیا؟

I had to do an analysis about the energy use in the world.

پێویست بوو شیکردنەوە بکەم لەسەر بەکارهێنانی وزە لە جیهاندا.

Here we are.

لێرەیاین.

Look here. You see the seven billion people up there?

سەیری ئێرەکەن. حەوت ملیار کەس ئەبینن لەویایا؟

The air people, the wash people,

خەڵکی ئاسمان، خەڵکی شتن،

the bulb people and the fire people.

خەڵکی گڵۆپ و خەڵکی ئاگر.

One unit like this

یەک یەکەی لەم شێوەیە

is an energy unit of fossil fuel -- oil, coal or gas.

یەکەیەکی وزەی سووتەمەنییە -- نەوت، خەڵوز یان غاز.

That's what most of the electricity and the energy in the world is.

ئەوە زۆربەی کارەبا و وزەی جیهانە.

And it's 12 units used in the entire world,

دوانزە یەکەشە بەکاردێت لە هەموو جیهاندا، و

and the richest one billion, they use six of them.

دەوڵەمەندترین یەک ملیاریان شەش دانەیان بەکاردێنن.

Half of the energy is used by one seventh of the world population.

نیوەی وزەی جیهان لەلایەن یەک لەسەر حەوتی خەڵکی جیهانەوە بەکاردێت.

And these ones, who have washing machines

ئەمانەش کە جلشۆریان هەیە

but not a house full of other machines,

بەڵام ماڵێکی پڕ ئامێریان نییە،

they use two.

دووان بەکاردێنن.

This group uses three, one each.

ئەم کۆمەڵە هەر یەکێکیان سێ بەکاردێنن.

And they also have electricity.

هەروەها کارەباش بەکاردێنن.

And over there, they don't even use one each.

لەویاشدا، یەکی تەنانەت یەک دانەش بەکارناهێنن.

That makes 12 of them.

ئەوەش ئەیانکات بە ١٢.

But the main concern

بەڵام خەمی سەرەکی

for the environmentally interested students -- and they are right --

بۆ خوێندکارەکانی گرنگی بە ژینگە ئەیەن -- و ڕاستن لەبارەیەوە --

is about the future.

دەربارەی داهاتووە.

What are the trends?

چی بیروباوەڕێک باوە؟

If we just prolong the trends, without any real advanced analysis,

ئەگەر بیروباوەڕەکان درێژکەینەوە، بێ هیچ شیکردنەوەیەکی پێشکەوتوو،

to 2050,

هەتا ٢٠٥٠،

there are two things that can increase the energy use:

دوو شت هەن ئەکرێت بەکارهێنانی وزە زیاتر بکات:

first, population growth; second, economic growth.

یەکەم، گەشەسەندنی دانیشتووان؛ دووەم، گەشەسەندنی ئابووری.

Population growth will mainly occur among the poorest people here,

گەشەسەندنی ئابووری بەشێوەیەکی سەرەکی لەناو هەژارترین خەڵکەکاندا ڕووئەیات،

because they have high child mortality

چونکە ڕێژەی مردنی منداڵیان بەرزە و

and they have many children per woman.

هەر ژنێک چەندین منداڵی ئەبێت.

And that will get you two extra,

ئەوەش دووانی زیادت بۆ ئەهێنێت،

but that won't change the energy use very much.

بەڵام هێندە بەکارهێنانی وزە ناگۆڕێت.

What will happen is economic growth.

ئەوەی ڕووئەیات گەشەسەندنی ئابوورییە.

The best of here in the emerging economies --

باشترینی ئێرە لە ئابوورییە هەڵتۆقیوەکان --

I call them "the New East" --

پێیان ئەڵێم "ڕۆژهەڵاتی نوێ" --

they will jump the air line.

باز ئەیەن بەسەر هێڵی ئاسمانیا.

"Wopp!" they will say.

ئەڵێن "ووپ!".

And they will start to use as much as the Old West are doing already.

دەست ئەکەن بە بەکارهێنانی هێندەی ئەوەی خۆرئاوای کۆن بەکاریان ئەهێنا.

(Laughter)

And these people, they want the washing machine.

ئەم خەڵکانەش جلشۆریان ئەوێت.

I told you. They'll go there.

پێم وتن. ئەچن بۆ ئەوێ. و

And they will double their energy use.

بەکارهێنانی وزەیان ئەکەن بە دوو هێندە.

And we hope that the poor people will get into the electric light.

هیواداراریشم کە ئەم خەڵکە هەژارە بتوانن بە گڵۆپی کارەبایی بگەن.

And they'll get a two-child family without a stop in population growth.

هەر خێزانێکیش دوو منداڵ زیاتری ئەبێت و گەشەکردنی دانیشتووان ناوەستێ.

But the total energy consumption will increase to 22 units.

بەڵام کۆی گشتی بەکارهێنانی وزە زیاد ئەکات بۆ ٢٢ یەکە.

And these 22 units --

ئەم ٢٢ یەکەیەش --

still, the richest people use most of them.

هێشتا، دەوڵەمەندترینی هەموو خەڵک زۆربەی بەکارئەهێنن.

So what needs to be done?

کەواتە پێویستە چی بکرێت؟

Because the risk,

چونکە مەترسییەکە،

the high probability of climate change is real.

ئەگەری زۆری گۆڕانی کەشوهەوا ڕاستەقینەیە.

It's real.

زۆر ڕاستەقینەیە.

Of course, they must be more energy efficient.

بێگومان پێویستە بەشێوەیەکی ژیرانەتر وزە بەکاربێنن.

They must change their behavior in some way.

پێویستە بەشێوەیەک ڕەفتاریان بگۆڕن.

They must also start to produce green energy,

هەروەها پێویستە دەستیشکەن بە بەرهەمهێنانی وزەی سەوز،

much more green energy.

وزەی سەوزی زۆر زیاتر.

But until they have the same energy consumption per person,

بەڵام هەتا هەر یەکێکیان هەمان ئاستی بەکارهێنانی وزەی نەبێت،

they shouldn't give advice to others --

نابێت ئامۆژگاری بە خەڵکی تر بەن --

what to do and what not to do.

چی بکەن و چی نەکەن.

Here, we can get more green energy all over.

لێرە، ئەتوانین لەهەموو لایەک وزەی سەوز بەرهەم بێنین.

This is what we hope might happen.

هیوادارین ئەمە ڕووبات.

It's a real challenge in the future.

ململانێیەکی ڕاستەقینەیە بۆ داهاتوو.

But I can assure you that this woman in the favela in Rio,

بەڵام ئەتوانم دڵنیاتان بکەمەوە ئەم ژنە لە گەڕەکە هەژارەکەی ریۆ،

she wants a washing machine.

ئامێرێکی جل شتنی ئەوێت.

She's very happy about her minister of energy

زۆر ڕازییە لە وەزیری وزە

that provided electricity to everyone --

کە کارەبای بۆ هەمووان دابینکردووە --

so happy that she even voted for her.

زۆریش دڵخۆشە کە دەنگی پێیاوە.

And she became Dilma Rousseff,

بووشە بە دیلما رۆوسیف،

the president-elect of one of the biggest democracies in the world,

سەرۆکی هەڵبژێردراوی یەکێک لە گەورەترین دیموکراسییەتەکانی جیهان،

moving from minister of energy to president.

لە وەزیری وزەوە بووە بە سەرۆک.

If you have democracy, people will vote for washing machines.

ئەگەر دیموکراسییەتت هەبێت، خەڵک دەنگ بە جلشۆر ئەیەن.

They love them!

حەزیان لێیانە!

And what's the magic with them?

چی جادووێکیشیان تیایە؟

My mother explained the magic with this machine

دایکم جادووەکەی ئەم ئامێرەی ڕوونکردەوە

the very, very first day.

هەر یەکەم، یەکەم ڕۆژ.

She said, "Now, Hans.

وتی، "ئێستا، هانس.

We have loaded the laundry.

جلەکانمان خستۆتە ناوی.

The machine will make the work.

ئامێرەکە کارەکە ئەکات. و

And now we can go to the library."

ئێستا ئەتوانین بچین بۆ کتێبخانە."

Because this is the magic: you load the laundry,

چونکە ئەمە جادووەکەیە: جلەکانی تێئەکەیت، و

and what do you get out of the machine?

چی لە ئامێرەکە یەتە دەرەوە؟

You get books out of the machines,

کتێب لە ئامێرەکە یەتە دەرەوە،

children's books.

کتێبی منداڵان.

And mother got time to read for me.

دایکم کاتی بۆ مایەوە کتێبم بۆ بخوێنێتەوە.

She loved this.

حەزی لەمە بوو

I got the "ABC's" -- this is why I started my career as a professor,

فێری ئەی بی سی بووم -- لەبەر ئەمەش دەستم کرد بە بوون بە پرۆفیسۆر،

when my mother had time to read for me.

کاتێک دایکم کاتی هەبوو کتێبم بۆ بخوێنێتەوە.

And she also got books for herself.

کتێبی تریشی بۆخۆی دابینکرد.

She managed to study English and learn that as a foreign language.

توانی ئینگلیزی بخوێنێت و وەک زمانێکی بیانی فێریبێت.

And she read so many novels,

چەندین ڕۆمانیشی خوێندەوە،

so many different novels here.

چەندین ڕۆمانی هەمەجۆر.

And we really, we really loved this machine.

ئێمەش بەڕاستی، بەڕاستی ئەم ئامێرەمان خۆشویست.

(Laughter)

And what we said, my mother and me,

من، و دایکیشم، وتمان،

"Thank you, industrialization.

"سوپاس، بە پیشەسازی بوون.

Thank you, steel mill.

سوپاس کوورەی ئاسن.

Thank you, power station.

سوپاس، ئێستگەی کارەبا. و

And thank you, chemical processing industry

سوپاس، پیشەسازی پرۆسەکردنی ماددەی کیمیایی

that gave us time to read books."

کە کاتتان یاینێ بۆ خوێندنەوە."

Thank you very much.
