I was only four years old

كان في عومري غير ربع سنين

when I saw my mother load a washing machine

كي شوفت يمّا تعمر ف الماشينة نتاع الغسيل

for the very first time in her life.

الخطرة اللولة في حياتها.

That was a great day for my mother.

عند يمّا، داك كان نهار ما يتنساش.

My mother and father had been saving money for years

مّا وبّا... شحال من عام و هوما يحّجرو (يْلَّمو) ف الدراهم

to be able to buy that machine,

باش ينجمو يشرو ديك الماشينة،

and the first day it was going to be used,

و ف النهار اللول اللي كانو غادي يخدمو بيها،

even Grandma was invited to see the machine.

حتى حّنّا (الجدة) كانت معروضة

باش تجي تشوف الماشينة.

(Laughter)

حتى حّنّا كانت طايرة ب الفرحة.

And Grandma was even more excited.

Throughout her life, she had been heating water with firewood,

حياتها ڤاع

و هي تحمي الما ب نار الحطب

and she had hand-washed laundry for seven children.

و كانت ديما تغسل القش ب يديها

ل ولادها السبعة.

And now, she was going to watch electricity do that work.

و ضروك راهي غادي تشوف

الضّو ضروك غادي يدي دالتو ف هاد الخدمة.

My mother carefully opened the door,

حلّت مّا بالعقل الباب،

and she loaded the laundry into the machine,

عمرت قش الغسيل

ف الماشينة،

ب هاد الصيفة.

like this.

And then, when she closed the door,

و من بعد، كي بلعت الباب،

Grandma said, "No, no, no, no!

حنّا قالت ليها: "للا، للا، للا، للا.

Let me! Let me push the button!"

خليني، أنا نعبز القفلة."

(Laughter)

And Grandma pushed the button,

عبزت حنّا القفلة،

و قالت: "شحال شابة!"

and she said, "Oh, fantastic!

I want to see this! Give me a chair! Give me a chair! I want to see it,"

راني باغية نشوف هاد العلامة! جيبيلي كورسي!

عطيني كورسي! باغية نشوفها"

and she sat down in front of the machine,

و قعدت قبالة الماشينة،

and she watched the entire washing program.

و تفرجت ڤاع سيرة الغسيل.

(Laughter)

كانت مخلوعة.

She was mesmerized.

To my grandmother, the washing machine was a miracle.

ل حنّا،

ماشينة الغسيل، هادي، موعجيزة كبيرة.

Today, in Sweden and other rich countries,

ضروك، ف السويد و ف بلدان واحدوخرين ب خير عليهوم،

people are using so many different machines.

الناس راهي تخدم

ب قوجة نواع ماشينات.

Look -- the homes are full of machines.

شوفو شحال الديور راهي معمرة ب الماشينات.

I can't even name them all.

حتى اللي تصعاب علي باش نسميهوم ڤاع.

And they also, when they want to travel,

و تانيك، كي يبغو يحّوسو،

يدّيو ماشينات تطير

they use flying machines

that can take them to remote destinations.

تدّيهوم ل مواضع بعاد.

And yet, in the world,

ڤاع كيما ن هاك، ما زال عاد كاينين ناس بزاف

there are so many people who still heat the water on fire,

يحميو الماء فوق النار،

و يطيبو ماكلتهم فوق النار.

and they cook their food on fire.

Sometimes they don't even have enough food.

ف شي خطرات، ما يكونش عندهوم حتى واش يلزم من ماكلة،

و تلقاهوم عايشين زاوالية (تحت خط الفقر).

And they live below the poverty line.

There are two billion fellow human beings

كاين شي 2 ملاير عيباد

who live on less than two dollars a day.

عايشين ب قل من 2 دولارات في النهار.

و العيباد اللي ب خير عليهوم تماتيك --

And the richest people over there -- there's one billion people,

كاين واحد الشي مليار بنادم --

and they live above what I call the "air line" --

because they spend more than 80 dollars a day

on their consumption.

But this is just one, two, three billion people,

and obviously, there are seven billion people in the world,

so there must be one, two, three, four billion people more

who live in between the poverty and the air line.

They have electricity,

but the question is: How many have washing machines?

I've done the scrutiny of market data, and I've found that, indeed,

راني سْتَخْبَرْت و دديت الطالع نتاع السوق،

و لقيت، صح، ب اللي

the washing machine has penetrated below the air line,

and today, there's an additional one billion people out there

who live above the "wash line."

And they consume for more than 40 dollars per day.

So two billion have access to washing machines.

And the remaining five billion --

how do they wash?

Or, to be more precise,

how do most of the women in the world wash?

Because it remains the hard work for women to wash.

لاخاطرش باين الحال ب اللي غسيل القش راهو تامارة كبيرة ل النسا.

They wash like this: by hand.

يغسلو كيما ن هاك: ب يديهوم.

It's hard, time-consuming labor,

تهمبير كبير و ياخد وقت كبير،

لازم عليهوم يديروه ل شحال من ساعة، كل سمانة.

which they have to do for hours every week.

و خطرات، لازم عليهوم يجيبو الما من بلايص بعاد

And sometimes they also have to bring water from far away

باش يديرو غسيل القش ف الدار،

to do the laundry at home,

or they have to bring the laundry away to a stream far off.

ولاّ يتلزم عليهوم يرفدو قش الغسيل لكاش سيالة ميمان بعيدة.

And they want the washing machine.

و راهوم باغيين ماشينة غسيل.

They don't want to spend such a large part of their life

مادابيهوم لوكان ما يضيعوش قوجة وقت من حياتهوم

doing this hard work

ف هاد التامارة

with so relatively low productivity.

اللي ما تجي معاها غير فايدة قليلة.

و ما كاين حتى فرق كبير بين الخاطر نتاعهوم

And there's nothing different in their wish

و واش كان ف خاطر حّنّا.

than it was for my grandma.

شوفو معايا هنايا، هادي شي زوج جيال ف السويد --

Look here, two generations ago in Sweden --

picking water from the stream,

السقيان نتاع الما من كاش سيالة،

heating with firewood and washing like that.

التسخان ب نار الحطب و الغسيل ب هاد الصيفة.

They want the washing machine in exactly the same way.

راهوم باغيين ماشينة الغسيل، ب دات الصيفة، هي هي.

But when I lecture to environmentally concerned students,

بصح كي نحاضر قدام ناس يقراو و مهتمين بالمنعاش،

they tell me, "No, everybody in the world cannot have cars and washing machines."

يقولو لي: "للا! مشي ڤاع الناس يقدر يكون عندهوم طونوبيلات و ماشينات الغسيل."

How can we tell this woman

كيفاش نخبرو ديك المْرا

that she isn't going to have a washing machine?

ب اللي عومّر ما غادي تكسب ماشينة غسيل؟

And then I ask my students -- over the last two years, I've asked --

بعدها، سقسيت الطلبة دياولي،

سقسيتهوم -- ف هاد زوج عوام التْوالا،

"How many of you don't use a car?"

"شحال فيكوم اللي ما ستعملوش كاش لوطو؟"

And some of them proudly raise their hand and say, "I don't use a car."

وحدين فيهوم رفعو يديهوم مْقَنْعِين

وقالو: "أنا ما نستعملش الطونوبيل".

And then I put the really tough question:

تماتيك، حطيت السوال القاصح:

"How many of you hand-wash your jeans and your bedsheets?"

"شحال فيكوم

اللي يغسل الدجينز و الزاورات نتاوعو ب يديه؟"

And no one raised their hand.

و هنا، حتى واحد فيهوم ما رفد يدّيه.

حتى هادوك اللي يقصحو من جيهة المحامية على المنعاش،

Even the hardcore in the green movement use washing machines.

يستعملو الماشينة ديال الغسيل.

(Laughter)

So how come [this is] something that everyone uses

أمالا كيفاش: هادي حاجة يخدم بيها كل واحد فينا

and they think others will not stop it?

و دايرين ب اللي حتى واحد ما ينجم يحبس الخدمة بيها؟ وين فراز الشي هنايا؟

What is special with this?

I had to do an analysis about the energy use in the world.

متلزم علي ندير تحليل للقضية نتاع الطاقة ف العالم.

Here we are.

ها رانا هنا.

Look here. You see the seven billion people up there?

شوفو هنايا! راكوم تشوفو السبع ملاير عيباد الفوق هنايا:

The air people, the wash people,

ناس السما، ناس الغسيل،

the bulb people and the fire people.

ناس اللامپولة و ناس النار.

One unit like this

عفسة كيما هادي

is an energy unit of fossil fuel -- oil, coal or gas.

هي عْبار نتاع ئينَرجي مجبود من كاش مادة متحجرة نتاع ڤديان --

زيت، فحم ولا ڤاز.

That's what most of the electricity and the energy in the world is.

من هاد الشي راهي جايتنا الكوترية نتاع الضو و الطاقة ف العالم.

And it's 12 units used in the entire world,

هادا معناتو 12 عْباَر راهو مستعمل في العالم ب كمالو،

and the richest one billion, they use six of them.

و المليار عبد اللي ب خير عليهوم كتر، راهوم يستعملو 6 عْبارات منها.

Half of the energy is used by one seventh of the world population.

نوص الطاقة يستفاد منها غير 1/7 نتاع السكان ف العالم.

And these ones, who have washing machines

و هاد الناس اللي عندهوم ماشينة الغسيل،

بصح ما عندهومش دار معمرة ب ماشينات واحدوخرة،

but not a house full of other machines,

يخدمو غير ب زوج عبارات.

they use two.

This group uses three, one each.

هاد المجموعة يخدمو ب تلاتة، عبار ل كل واحد.

و هوما تانيك عندهوم الضو.

And they also have electricity.

و تماك، ما يخدمو ب حتى عبار، بيناتهوم.

And over there, they don't even use one each.

That makes 12 of them.

هادا يعطينا 12 ف المجموعة.

But the main concern

المفيد ف ڤاع هاد الشي

for the environmentally interested students -- and they are right --

للناس اللي يقراو و مهتمين بقضية المنعاش -- و عندهوم الحق --

is about the future.

يتعلق ب المستقبل.

وين راهي ماشية الحالة كيما ن هاك؟ لا كملنا ب دات السيرة،

What are the trends?

If we just prolong the trends, without any real advanced analysis,

و بلا ما نديرو حتى تحليل متعمق ب البزاف، منا ل 2050،

to 2050,

كاين زوج صوالح يقدرو يزيدو ف حاجتنا ل الئينيرجيه.

there are two things that can increase the energy use:

الحاجة اللولة، الناس راهي تزيد كتر.

first, population growth; second, economic growth.

الزاوجة، التطوار نتاع القتيصاد.

Population growth will mainly occur among the poorest people here,

الزيادة ف السكان غادي تصرا الكوترية ما بين الناس الڤلاليل، هنايا،

لاخاطرش تماك وين عندهوم الكوترية نتاع الموت ديال البزوزا

because they have high child mortality

و كل مرا عندها شحال من بّز.

and they have many children per woman.

و مع ڤاع هاد الشي، يزيدو يبانو زوج عفايس،

And that will get you two extra,

بصح هادا ما يأّتَرْش بزاف ف الطاقة اللي مستعملة.

but that won't change the energy use very much.

واش غادي يصرا هو تطوار ف القتيصاد.

What will happen is economic growth.

The best of here in the emerging economies --

المخير هنايا يوقع في القتيصادات اللي عاد بدات تبان --

نعيط ليها: الشرق الجديد --

I call them "the New East" --

they will jump the air line.

غادي ينقزو فوق خط السما.

"Wopp!" they will say.

"ووپ!" هاكا يقولو.

And they will start to use as much as the Old West are doing already.

و غادي يوليو يبداو يديرو كيما الغرب القديم راهو ديجا داير.

(Laughter)

و هاد الناس، راهوم باغيين ماشينة الغسيل.

And these people, they want the washing machine.

راني نخبر فيكوم. راهوم ماشيين لهاد الشي.

I told you. They'll go there.

And they will double their energy use.

و غادي يزيدو م الطاقة اللي يخدمو بيها.

And we hope that the poor people will get into the electric light.

و نتمناو باللي الناس الزاوالية غادي يوصلهوم النور نتاع الضو.

And they'll get a two-child family without a stop in population growth.

و غادي تولي عندهوم العايلات ب زوج دراري بلا ما الزيادة ف السكان تحبس.

بصح الستيهلاك نتاع الطاقة في كمالو

But the total energy consumption will increase to 22 units.

غادي يزيد ب 22 عبار.

و هاد ال 22 عبار --

And these 22 units --

ما زالو الناس اللي ب خير عليهوم كتر هوما اللي يخدمو ب كوتريتها.

still, the richest people use most of them.

أمالا واش من حاجة لازم تَنْدَار؟

So what needs to be done?

Because the risk,

لاخاطرش الخطر،

the high probability of climate change is real.

الحتيمال ف التبدال نتاع المناخ راهو عالي و حقاني.

It's real.

واه، حقاني.

Of course, they must be more energy efficient.

باينة ب اللي غادي يتلزم عليهوم يتهلاو كتر ف الطاقة.

They must change their behavior in some way.

غادي يتلزم عليهوم يبدلو ف السيرة نتاعهوم.

They must also start to produce green energy,

غادي يتلزم عليهوم تانيك يبداو يصنعو طاقة نقية،

طاقة نقية كتر و كتر.

much more green energy.

But until they have the same energy consumption per person,

بصح مادام ما زال ما وصلوش يعدلو ف الستيهلاك نتاع الطاقة عند كل شعبي،

they shouldn't give advice to others --

what to do and what not to do.

Here, we can get more green energy all over.

This is what we hope might happen.

It's a real challenge in the future.

But I can assure you that this woman in the favela in Rio,

she wants a washing machine.

راهي راضية على الوزيرة نتاع الطاقة ديالها

She's very happy about her minister of energy

that provided electricity to everyone --

اللي وصلت الضو ل كل واحد --

so happy that she even voted for her.

من الكوترية اللي راهي فرحانة بيها، راهي ڢوطات عليها.

و راهي ولات ديلما روسيف،

And she became Dilma Rousseff,

the president-elect of one of the biggest democracies in the world,

الرئيسة اللي ڢوطاو عليها

الرئيسة نتاع واحدة من الديموقراطيات الڤاع كبار ف العالم --

كانت وزيرة نتاع الطاقة و راهي ولات رئيسة.

moving from minister of energy to president.

لا كانت كاينة عندكوم ديموقراطية،

If you have democracy, people will vote for washing machines.

الناس راهي تڢوطي على ماشينة الغسيل.

هوما يحبوها.

They love them!

(Laughter)

And what's the magic with them?

و وين راهي العفسة اللي تغوي هنايا؟

My mother explained the magic with this machine

يمّا فهمتني واش هو اللي يغوي ف هاد الماشينة

the very, very first day.

م النهار اللول، اللول نتاع اللول.

قالت لي: "ضروك، هانس،

She said, "Now, Hans.

اللي رانا عَمَّرْنا قش الغسيل.

We have loaded the laundry.

الماشينة هي اللي غادي تدير الخدمة.

The machine will make the work.

And now we can go to the library."

و ضروك، ننجمو نروحو ل المكتبة."

هادا هو الشي اللي يغوي:

Because this is the magic: you load the laundry,

تعمر قش الغسيل

and what do you get out of the machine?

و واش هي الفايدة نتاع الماشينة؟

You get books out of the machines,

يجوك الكتوبا م الماشينات،

الكتوبا نتاع البزوز.

children's books.

And mother got time to read for me.

و يمّا عاد ولا عندها وقت باش تقرا لي.

She loved this.

عجبها الحال ب البزاف. عطات لي "الساس" --

I got the "ABC's" -- this is why I started my career as a professor,

على بيها بديت الخدمة نتاعي كيما موعليم،

when my mother had time to read for me.

كي يمّا شاط عندها الوقت باش تقرا لي.

And she also got books for herself.

و هي تانيك، شرات كتوبا ل روحها.

She managed to study English and learn that as a foreign language.

بدات تتعلم الإنجليزية

و تعلمتها ك اللي لوغة برانية.

And she read so many novels,

و قرات شحال و شحال من رواية،

so many different novels here.

شحال من رواية، من كل نوع.

And we really, we really loved this machine.

و الصح الصح، شحال حبينا هاديك الماشينة.

(Laughter)

And what we said, my mother and me,

و اللي قولناه، أنا و يمّا،

"Thank you, industrialization.

"صحيتي يا الصنعة."

Thank you, steel mill.

صحيتي على الحديد.

Thank you, power station.

صحيتي على الضو.

And thank you, chemical processing industry

و صحيتي يا صنعة الكيمياء

that gave us time to read books."

اللي عطات لينا الوقت باش نقراو الكتوبا."

Thank you very much.
