چەندان جۆری مرۆڤ لە دەوروبەرتن

کە یارمەتیت دەدەن ژیانت بەرە پێش ببەیت.

ئێمە باسی ھەموو دراوسێکان ناکەین،

کەواتە هیچ کات زییدەکییەکی زۆر تێناپەڕێت،

لەگەڵ ئەوشدا ھەمان بۆشایی گشتی ھابەش دەکەین.

There are a lot of ways the people around us

بۆیە لە کۆتا ساڵەکاندا، زۆر رێگای ترم تاقیکردووەتەوە

can help improve our lives.

لەگەل دراوسێکانم لەسەر بۆشایی گشتی،

We don't bump into every neighbor,

بەکارهێنانی ئامرازی سادە وەک چەسپ و ستێنسیل و دار.

so a lot of wisdom never gets passed on,

though we do share the same public spaces.

و ئەم پرۆژانەش لەو پرسیارانە دێن کە ھەمە، وەکو:

So over the past few years, I've tried ways to share more

دراوسێانم چەند پارە دەدەن بۆ خانوەکانیان؟

with my neighbors in public space,

دەتوانین چەند شتیان لێ وەرگرین یان قەرزی بکەین،

using simple tools like stickers, stencils and chalk.

بەبێ ئەوەی لە دەرگای یەک بدەین کە کاتە دژوارەکان؟

And these projects came from questions I had, like:

چۆن دەتوبین یادگاریمان ھەبێت لە باڵەخانە چۆڵکراوەکانمان،

How much are my neighbors paying for their apartments?

و باشتر لە تێروانینی یەک بگەین؟

How can we lend and borrow more things,

without knocking on each other's doors at a bad time?

چۆن ھیواکانمان ھاوبەشی بکەین لە پێشەوەی کۆگا چۆلەکە،

How can we share more memories of our abandoned buildings,

کەواتە کۆمەڵگاکەمان رەنگدانەوەی پێویست و خەونەکانمانن؟

and gain a better understanding of our landscape?

ئێستا، من لە ئۆرلیانسی نوێ دەژیم،

How can we share more of our hopes for our vacant storefronts,

و ئۆرلیانسی نوێم زۆر خۆشدەوێت.

رووحم ھەمیشە بە دار بەروو و دارە گەورەکان ھەرەس دەبات،

so our communities can reflect our needs and dreams today?

کە ئاشقان و سەرخۆشان و خەو بینەکانی لەخۆ گرتووە بۆ ھەزاران ساڵ،

Now, I live in New Orleans,

and I am in love with New Orleans.

و من متمانەم بەو شارەیە کە دەنگی مۆسیقای لێدێت.

My soul is always soothed by the giant live oak trees,

پێم وایە ھەموو جار کەسێک دەپژمێت،

shading lovers, drunks and dreamers for hundreds of years,

and I trust a city that always makes way for music.

I feel like every time someone sneezes,

New Orleans has a parade.

The city has some of the most beautiful architecture in the world,

و بیرم لە شتێک دەکردەوە کە ژیانمی دەگۆری بۆ ھەتا ھەتایە.

but it also has one of the highest amounts of abandoned properties in America.

لە ساڵی ٢٠٠٩، کەسێکم ھەبوو زۆرم خشدەویست.

I live near this house,

and I thought about how I could make it a nicer space for my neighborhood,

ناوی جوان بوو، و ئەو دایکم بوو.

and I also thought about something that changed my life forever.

و مردنی ئەو لەناکاو و چاوەروان نەکراو بوو.

In 2009, I lost someone I loved very much.

و زۆر بیرم لە مردن دەکردەوە.

Her name was Joan, and she was a mother to me.

And her death was sudden and unexpected.

و.... و ئەمو وای لێ کردم زۆر سوپاسگوزاربم بۆ ئەو کاتەی تا ئێستا ھەمبووە.

And I thought about death a lot.

و... و ھەموو شتێکم لا روون بویەوە کە مانایان ھەبوو لە ژیانم.

And ... this made me feel deep gratitude for the time I've had.

بەڵام دەجەنگام بۆ ھێشتنەوەی ئەو تێروانینە لە ژیانی ڕۆژانەم.

And ... brought clarity to the things that are meaningful to my life now.

وام ھەست دەکرد ئاسایی بێت رۆژ بۆ رۆژ ئەو ھەستەت ھەبێت،

و لەبیری بکەیت کە چی بۆتۆ گرینگە.

بۆیە بە یارمەتی ھاورێ کۆن و نوێیەکانم،

But I struggle to maintain this perspective in my daily life.

ئەم خانووە چۆلکراوەم گۆری بۆ پارچە تەختەیەکی گەورە،

I feel like it's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day,

و بە چڕی دامنا و رستەیەکم لەسەر نوسی:

and forget what really matters to you.

" پێش ئەوەی بمرم، دەمەوێت...“.

So with help from old and new friends,

تا ھەرکەسێک بەوێ تێپەری پارچەیەک تەباشیر ھەڵگرێت و شتێک بنوسێت،

I turned the side of this abandoned house into a giant chalkboard,

کە رەنگدانەوەی ژیانیانە،

and stenciled it with a fill-in-the-blank sentence:

و تێروانینەکانیان بۆ رای گشتی ھاوبەشی بکەن.

"Before I die, I want to ..."

نرمدەزانی چاوەرێی چی بکەم لەم تاقیکردنەوەیە،

So anyone walking by can pick up a piece of chalk,

بەڵام لە رۆژی دواتر، ھەموو دیوارەکە پر بوبویەوە،

reflect on their life,

بۆیە گەورەم کرد.

and share their personal aspirations in public space.

و دەمەوێت کۆمەلێ شت باس کەم کە خەلک لەسەر دیوارەکە نوسیبوی.

I didn't know what to expect from this experiment,

but by the next day, the wall was entirely filled out,

“پێش ئەوەگ بمرم دەمەوێت ھەوڵی چەتە بوون بدەم“.

and it kept growing.

And I'd like to share a few things that people wrote on this wall.

“پێش ئەوەی بمرم دەمەوێت ھێلی بەرواری نێودەوڵەتی بشێوێنم.”

"Before I die, I want to be tried for piracy."

(Laughter)

“پێش ئەوەی بمرم دەمەوێت گۆرانی بۆ ملیۆنان خەڵک بڵێم“.

“پێش ئەوەی بمرم دەمەوێت دارێک بچێنم“.

"Before I die, I want to straddle the International Dateline."

“پێش ئەوەی بمرم دەمەوێت لە دوو بژیم“.

"Before I die, I want to sing for millions."

“پێش ئەوەی بمرم دەمەوێت یەک جاری تر لە باوەشی بکەم“.

"Before I die, I want to plant a tree."

"Before I die, I want to live off the grid."

“پێش ئەوەی بمرم دەمەوێت ببمە سەربازی کەسێک“.

"Before I die, I want to hold her one more time."

“پێش ئەوەی بمرم دەمەوێت بە تەواوی خۆم بم“.

"Before I die, I want to be someone's cavalry."

بۆیە ئەم بۆشاییە فەرامۆشکراوە بوو بە بنیاتنەرێک.

"Before I die, I want to be completely myself."

و خەون و ئاواتی خەلکی وای لێکردم بە دەنگی بەرز پێبکەنم،

و دڵنەواییان کردم لە کاتی سەختی خۆمدا.

So this neglected space became a constructive one,

ئەمە واتای ئەوەیە بەتەنیا نیت؛

ئەمە دەرباری تێگەیشتنە لە دراوسێیەکانمان بە شێوازێکی نوێ و دڵخۆشکەرانە؛

and people's hopes and dreams made me laugh out loud, tear up,

ئەوە دەربارەی دروستکردنی بۆشاییە بۆ ڕەنگدانەوە و بیرکردنەوە،

and they consoled me during my own tough times.

و بیرھێنانەوەی کە چی لە ھەموو شتێک گرینگترە بۆ گەورەبوون و گۆرانکاری.

It's about knowing you're not alone;

it's about understanding our neighbors in new and enlightening ways;

من ئەوەم کرد پارساڵ،

و سەدان نامەم بۆ دەھات لەلایەن خەلکەوە

it's about making space for reflection and contemplation,

and remembering what really matters most to us as we grow and change.

کە دەیانویست دیوارێکی ھاوشێوە دروسیت بکەن.

کەواتە، هاوپیشەکانی ناوەندی شارستانیم وە من ئامێرێکیان دروست کرد

و ئێستا ئەو دیوارانە لە وڵاتانی دورووبەری جیھان دروستکراون،ھەریەک لە کازاخستان،

I made this last year,

and started receiving hundreds of messages from passionate people

who wanted to make a wall with their community.

So, my civic center colleagues and I made a tool kit,

ئوسترالیا،

and now walls have been made in countries around the world,

Together, we've shown how powerful our public spaces can be

Two of the most valuable things we have

are time, and our relationships with other people.

In our age of increasing distractions,

it's more important than ever to find ways to maintain perspective,

and remember that life is brief and tender.

بیرکردنەوە لە مردن ژیانت دیار دەکات.

Death is something that we're often discouraged to talk about,

or even think about,

but I've realized that preparing for death

ئەو نوسیینانەی ئێمە زیاتر رەنگدانەوەی شتە گرینگەکانن،

is one of the most empowering things you can do.

وەک تاک و وەک کۆمەڵگا،

Thinking about death clarifies your life.

و لەگەڵ رێگاری کە بۆ ھاوبەشی کردنی ھیوا و ترس و چیرۆکەکانمان،

ئەو خەلکەی دەوروبەرمان نەک تەنیا یارمەتیمان دەدەن لە باشترکردن،

Our shared spaces can better reflect what matters to us,

as individuals and as a community,

یارمەتیمان دەدەن ژیان بەرەو پێش ببەین.
