Photography has been my passion

حەم لە وێنەکێشان بووە،

ever since I was old enough to pick up a camera,

لەو کاتەوەی کە توانای هەڵگرتنی کامێرام هەبووە،

but today I want to share with you

ئەمڕۆ دەمەوێت باسی،

the 15 most treasured photos of mine,

١٥ وێنەی خۆمتان بۆ بکەم،

and I didn't take any of them.

کە خۆم هیچ کامێکیانم نەچرکاندووە.

There were no art directors, no stylists,

هیچ دەرهێنەرێکی هونەری نەبوو، هیچ شێوازێکی وێنەگرتن نەبوو،

no chance for reshoots, not even any regard for lighting.

هیچ دەرفەتێک نیە بۆ دووبارە کردنەوە، تەنانەت هیچ ڕووناکیەکیش نییە.

In fact, most of them were taken by random tourists.

لە ڕاستیدا، زۆربەیان لەلایەن گەشتیارانەوە هەڕەمەکییانەە گیراون.

My story begins

چیڕۆکەکەم دەست پێدەکات،

when I was in New York City for a speaking engagement,

کاتێک کە لە شاری نیویۆرک بووم بۆ چاوپێکەوتنی قسەکردن،

and my wife took this picture of me holding my daughter

هاوسەرەکەم ئەم وێنەیەی چرکاند کە کچەکەم هەڵگرتبوو،

on her first birthday. We're on the corner of 57th and 5th.

لە یەکەمین ساڵیادی لە دایک بوونیدا. لە گۆشەی پێنجەمین و پەنجاو حەفتەمین.

We happened to be back in New York exactly a year later,

دوای یەک ساڵ لە نیۆرکدا گەڕاینەوە،

so we decided to take the same picture.

بڕیارماندا هەمان وێنە بگرینەوە.

Well you can see where this is going.

دەتوانی ببینی ئەمە بەرەو کوێ دەڕوات.

سێیەم ڕۆژی لەدایکبوونی کچەکەم نزیک دەبێتەوە.

Approaching my daughter's third birthday,

my wife said, "Hey, why don't you take Sabina back to New York

هاوسەرەکەم گوتی: “بۆچی سابینا ناگەڕێننەوە بۆ نیویۆرک

and make it a father-daughter trip, and continue the ritual?"

سەفەرێکی کچ و باوکانە ئەنجام دەدەن و بەردەوام دەبن لە مەراسیمەکە؟

This is when we started asking passing tourists to take the picture.

لەوکاتەدا دەستمان کرد بە داواکردنی گەشتیارەکان بۆ گرتنی وێنەکە.

You know, it's remarkable how universal

دەزانی، ئەوەجێی سەرنجە کە چەندە جیهانییە!

the gesture is of handing your camera to a total stranger.

شێوازی گرتنی کامێراکەت بەتەواوی نامۆیە.

No one's ever refused, and luckily no one's ever run off with our camera.

هیچ کەسێک ڕەتی نەکردۆتەوە، خۆشبەختانە هیچ کەس بە کامێراکەمان ی نەبردەوە.

Back then, we had no idea how much this trip would change our lives.

ئەو کاتە، ئێمە هیچ بیرۆکەیەکمان نەبوو کە ئەم گەشتە تا چەند ژیانمان دەگۆڕێت.

It's really become sacred to us.

بەڕاستی بۆ ئێمە پیرۆز دەبێت.

This one was taken just weeks after 9/11,

ئەمەیان چەند هەفتەیەک دوای ٩ی تشرینی دووەم گیراوە،

and I found myself trying to explain what had happened that day

هەوڵ دەدەم ڕوونی بکەمەوە ئەو ڕۆژە چی ڕوویداوە،

in ways a five-year-old could understand.

بە شێوەیەک کە تەمەن پێنج ساڵێک دەتوانێت تێبگات.

So these photos are far more than proxies

کەواتە ئەم وێنانە زۆر لە پرۆکسی زیاترن،

for a single moment, or even a specific trip.

بۆ یەک چرکە، یان تەنانەت گەشتێکی دیاریکراو.

They're also ways for us to freeze time

هەروەها ڕێگایەکن بۆ وەستاندنی کاتمان،

for one week in October

لە یەک هەفتە لە تشرینی یەکەم,

and reflect on our times

لە کاتەکانمان ڕەنگ دەداتەوە.

and how we change from year to year,

هەروەها چۆن لە ساڵێکەوە بۆ ساڵێکی تر دەگۆڕێین،

and not just physically, but in every way.

نەک تەنها لە لایەنی جەستەیی، بەڵکو بە هەموو شێوەیەک.

Because while we take the same photo,

چونکە لە کاتێکدا کە هەمان وێنە دەگرین،

our perspectives change,

تێڕوانینەکانمان دەگۆڕێن،

and she reaches new milestones,

هەروەها دەگاتە ڕەهەندێکی نوێ،

and I get to see life through her eyes,

دەتوانم ژیان لە چاوی ئەوەوە ببینم،

and how she interacts with and sees everything.

چۆن مامەڵە لەگەڵ خەڵک دەکات و شتەکان دەبینێت.

This very focused time we get to spend together

پێویستە ئەم کاتە زۆر چڕو پڕە پێکەوە بەسەر ببەین.

is something we cherish and anticipate the entire year.

ئەوە شتێکە, هەموو ساڵێکمان چاودێری و پێشبینی دەکەین.

Recently, on one trip, we were walking,

لەم دوایانەدا، لە گەشتێدا پیاسەمان دەکرد،

and she stops dead in her tracks,

ڕێڕەوی خۆی بە مردوویی ڕێرەویی،

and she points to a red awning of the doll store

وە ئەو ئاماژە بە سووری کۆگای بوکەڵە دەکات

that she loved when she was little

کە ئەو حەزی دەکرد کاتێک کە ئەو بچووک بوو

on our earlier trips.

لە سەرەتای گەشتەکانماندا.

And she describes to me the feeling she felt

وەسفی هەستی خۆی بۆ دەکردم،

as a five-year-old standing in that exact spot.

وەک منداڵێکی تەمەن پێنج ساڵان لەو شوێنەدا وەستاوە.

She said she remembers her heart bursting out of her chest

بیری لە لێدانی دڵی لە پشتی سینگیدا دەکردەوە،

when she saw that place for the very first time

کاتێک بە یەکەمین جار ئەو شوێنەی بینی،

nine years earlier.

٩ ساڵ زووتر.

And now what she's looking at in New York

ئێستا ئەوەی لە نیویۆرک سەیری دەکات،

are colleges,

هاورێکانین،

because she's determined to go to school in New York.

چونکە بڕیاری داوە لە نیویۆرک بچێتە قوتابخانە.

And it hit me: One of the most important things

یەکێک لە شتە گرنگەکان،

we all make are memories.

هەموومان دەبینە بیرەوەری و یادگاری.

So I want to share the idea of taking an active role

بۆیە دەمەوێت بیرۆکەی وەرگرتنی ڕۆڵێکی کارا باس بکەم،

in consciously creating memories.

لە دروست کردنی بیرەوەرییەکان بە ئاگایی.

I don't know about you, but aside from these 15 shots,

دەربارەی تۆ نازانم، بەڵام جگە لەم ١٥ دانەیە،

I'm not in many of the family photos.

لە زۆربەی وێنە خێزانیەکان نیم.

I'm always the one taking the picture.

لەوانەمە کە هەمیشە وێنەکە دەگرم،

So I want to encourage everyone today

لەبەرئەوەیە دەمەوێت ئەمڕۆ هانی هەموو کەسێک بدەم

to get in the shot,

دەست بە وێنەگرتن بکەن،

and don't hesitate to go up to someone and ask,

هەروەها لەکەس دوودڵ مەبە و پرسیار بکە،

"Will you take our picture?"

وێنەی ئێمە دەگریت؟
