وێنەگرتن ئارەزووى منە

ever since I was old enough to pick up a camera,

لەو کاتەوەی کە ئەوەندە گەورە بووم کە بتوانم کامیرا هەڵبگرم،

but today I want to share with you

بەڵام ئەمڕۆ دەمەوێت

the 15 most treasured photos of mine,

بە پانزدە لە وێنە بەنرخەکانم پێشانی ئێوە بدەم،

and I didn't take any of them.

و من ھیچ یەکێکیانم نەچرکاندووە.

There were no art directors, no stylists,

ھیچ ھونەرێکی دەرھێنان و ئامادەکاریەک نەبووە،

no chance for reshoots, not even any regard for lighting.

هیچ هەڵێک بۆ دووبارە گرتنەوەیان نەبووە تەنانەت هیچ ڕووناکیەکیش پەیرەو نەکرابوو.

In fact, most of them were taken by random tourists.

لە ڕاستیدا، زۆربەیان لەلایەن گەشتیارە نەناسراوەوەکان گیراون.

My story begins

چیرۆکەکەم دەست پێدەکات

when I was in New York City for a speaking engagement,

کاتێک لە نیویۆرک بووم بۆ بەشداری کردن لە وتارێکدا،

and my wife took this picture of me holding my daughter

on her first birthday. We're on the corner of 57th and 5th.

We happened to be back in New York exactly a year later,

so we decided to take the same picture.

Well you can see where this is going.

Approaching my daughter's third birthday,

لە نزیکبوونەوەی سێیەم یادی کچەکەم،

my wife said, "Hey, why don't you take Sabina back to New York

ھاوسەرەکەم گووتی، ''بۆچی سابینا نابەیتەوە نیویۆڕک

and make it a father-daughter trip, and continue the ritual?"

و گەشتێکی باوک و کچ پێکەوە بکەن، و بەردەوام بن لە نەریتەکە؟"

This is when we started asking passing tourists to take the picture.

ئەوکاتەی داوامان لە گەشتیارەکان کرد وێنەمان بگرن.

You know, it's remarkable how universal

دەزانی، ئەوە جێی سەرنجە کە چۆن جیھان

the gesture is of handing your camera to a total stranger.

کامێراکانیان دەدەنە دەست کەسێکی نامۆ بۆ وێنەگرتن.

No one's ever refused, and luckily no one's ever run off with our camera.

ھەرگیز کەس ڕەتی نەدەکردەوە، و خۆشبەختانە کەس بە کامێراکانمانەوە ڕای نەدەکرد.

Back then, we had no idea how much this trip would change our lives.

ئەوکات، نەماندەزانی ئەم گەشتە چەند ژیانمان دەگۆڕێت.

It's really become sacred to us.

زۆر پیرۆز بوو بۆ ئێمە.

This one was taken just weeks after 9/11,

ئەوەیان چەند هەفتەیەک دوای ٩/١١ گیرا،

and I found myself trying to explain what had happened that day

و ھەوڵم دەدا ئەوە ڕوون بکەمەوە کە ئەو ڕۆژە چی ڕوویدا

in ways a five-year-old could understand.

بە ڕێگەیەک کە پێنج ساڵانێک لێی تێبگات.

So these photos are far more than proxies

کەواتە ئەم وێنانە زیاتر لە یادەوەری

for a single moment, or even a specific trip.

بۆ ساتێک یان گەشتێکی دیاریکراو دەگەیەنێن.

They're also ways for us to freeze time

هەمیشە ڕێگەیەکمان هەیە بۆ ڕاگرتنى کاتەکان

for one week in October

بۆ ھەفتەیەک لە مانگی ١٠ دا

and reflect on our times

و ڕەنگدانەوەى بەسەر کاتەکانمان دا هەبوو

and how we change from year to year,

و چۆن لە ساڵێکەوە بۆ ساڵێکیتر دەگۆڕێین،

and not just physically, but in every way.

و نەک تەنھا بە شێوەیەکی بەرجەستەىى، بەڵکو بە ھەموو شێوەیەک.

Because while we take the same photo,

چونکە کاتێک ھەمان وێنە دەچرکێنین،

our perspectives change,

تێروانینەکانمان دەگۆڕێن،

and she reaches new milestones,

و ئەو دەگاتە خاڵێکى تر,

and I get to see life through her eyes,

و لە چاوەکانی ئەوەوە ژیان دەبینم،

and how she interacts with and sees everything.

و چۆن کارلێک دەکات و ھەموو شتێک دەبینێت.

This very focused time we get to spend together

ئەو کاتە گرنگانەى پێکەوە بەسەریان دەبەین

is something we cherish and anticipate the entire year.

ئەو شتەیە کە ئێمە چاودێری و چاوەڕوانی دەکەین لە تەواوی ساڵەکە.

Recently, on one trip, we were walking,

لەم دواییانە دا، لە گەشتێکدا، پیاسەمان دەکرد،

and she stops dead in her tracks,

و ئەو لە شوێنی خۆیدا وەستاو نەجوڵا،

and she points to a red awning of the doll store

ئاماژەی بە چەترێکی سوری دوکانێکی بووکەڵە کرد

that she loved when she was little

کە زۆری خۆشدەویست کاتێک منداڵ بوو

on our earlier trips.

لە گەشتەکانی پێشووترماندا.

And she describes to me the feeling she felt

و ئەو ھەستەی بۆ ڕوون دەکردمەوە کە ھەستی پێدەکرد

as a five-year-old standing in that exact spot.

وەک کچێکی پێنج ساڵان کە لە ھەمان شوێن بوو.

She said she remembers her heart bursting out of her chest

وتی ترپەی لێدانەکانی دڵی لە بیرە

when she saw that place for the very first time

کاتێک بۆ یەکەم جار ئەم شوێنەی بینی

nine years earlier.

نۆ ساڵ پێش ئێستا بوو.

And now what she's looking at in New York

و ئێستا ئەوەی کە لە نیویۆڕکدا بۆی دەگەڕێت

are colleges,

زانکۆیەکانە،

because she's determined to go to school in New York.

چونکە بڕیاریداوە بچێتە خویندنگا لە نیویۆڕک

And it hit me: One of the most important things

و ئەوە بە مێشکم داهات: یەکێک لە گرینگترین شتەکان

we all make are memories.

کە ھەموومان دەیکەین دروستکردنی یادەوەریە.

So I want to share the idea of taking an active role

بۆیە دەمەوێت ھاوبەشی بکەم بە بیرۆکەی وەرگرتنی ڕۆڵێکی چالاک

in consciously creating memories.

لەدروستکردنی یادەوەری.

I don't know about you, but aside from these 15 shots,

ھیچ شتێک دەربارەی تۆ نازانم، بەڵام جگە لەو ١٥ وێنەیە,

I'm not in many of the family photos.

لە زۆربەی وێنە خێزانیەکاندا دا نیم.

I'm always the one taking the picture.

ھەمیشە ئەو کەسەم کە وێنەکان دەگرم.

So I want to encourage everyone today

بۆیە ئەمڕۆ دەمەوێ ھانی ھەموو کەس بدەم

to get in the shot,

کە بچنە بەردەم کامێراکان و دوودڵ نەبن،

and don't hesitate to go up to someone and ask,

لەوەی داوا لەکەسێکی دەوروبەرەکەیان بکەن،

"Will you take our picture?"

'' دەتوانیت وێنەیەکمان بچرکێنن؟"
