I'm a tourism entrepreneur and a peacebuilder,

တီဗီထဲမှာ ကြည့်ဖူးတာကိုအမှတ်ရသေးတယ်၊

but this is not how I started.

When I was seven years old, I remember watching television

and seeing people throwing rocks,

and thinking, this must be a fun thing to do.

ဘေးအိမ်ကလူတွေရဲ့ကားကို ကျောက်ခဲတွေနဲ့ ထုမိသလိုဖြစ်သွားတယ်၊ (ရယ်သံများ)

So I got out to the street and threw rocks,

not realizing I was supposed to throw rocks at Israeli cars.

ကျွန်တော့်ရဲ့မျိုးချစ်စိတ်ပြင်းထန်ပုံကို သဘောမတွေ့ကြဘူးပေါ့။

Instead, I ended up stoning my neighbors' cars. (Laughter)

ဒါက ကျွန်တော့အစ်ကိုနဲ့ ရိုက်ထားတဲ့ဓာတ်ပုံပါ။

ဒီထဲကအငယ်တစ်ယောက်ကကျွန်တော်ပေါ့၊ ခင်ဗျားတို့ဘာတွေတွေးနေလဲသိတယ်နော်

They were not enthusiastic about my patriotism.

ငယ်တုန်းက ချစ်စရာပါ၊ ကြီးမှဘာဖြစ်သွားတာလဲလို့တွေးနေတယ်မလား။

This is me, the little one, and I know what you're thinking:

သူအသက်၁၈နှစ်မှာအဖမ်းခံရပါတယ်၊

"You used to look cute, what the heck happened to you?"

သူပစ်တာပါလို့ဝန်မခံတော့ဝိုင်းပြီး ရိုက်နှက်ကြတာကြောင့်

But my brother, who is older than me,

was arrested when he was 18,

ထောင်ကနေလွတ်လာပြီးနောက်

taken to prison on charges of throwing stones.

အတွင်းကြေဒဏ်ရာတွေရပြီး သူ ဆုံးသွားခဲ့တယ်။

He was beaten up when he refused to confess that he threw stones,

ကျွန်တော်စိတ်တွေနာ၊ စိတ်တွေဆိုးပြီး

and as a result, had internal injuries

လက်စားချေချင်တာတစ်ခုပဲသိတော့တယ်။

that caused his death soon after he was released from prison.

ဒါပေမဲ့ကျွန်တော်အသက်၁၈နှစ်ရောက်လာတော့ အဲ့ဒီစိတ်ကပြောင်းသွားပါတယ်

I was angry, I was bitter,

အလုပ်တစ်ခုရဖို့ဟီဘရူးဘာသာတော့ သင်ဖို့လိုမယ်လို့စိတ်ပိုင်းဖြတ်ခဲ့တယ်

and all I wanted was revenge.

But that changed when I was 18.

I decided that I needed Hebrew to get a job,

and going to study Hebrew in that classroom

was the first time I ever met Jews who were not soldiers.

And we connected over really small things, like the fact that I love country music,

which is really strange for Palestinians.

But it was then that I realized also that we have a wall of anger,

ကျွန်တော်ဘာပဲဖြစ်ဖြစ်ကိစ္စမရှိဘူးလို့ ဆုံးဖြတ်ခဲ့တယ်။

of hatred and of ignorance that separates us.

အရေးကြီးတာက ကျွန်တော့်ကိုင်တွယ်ဖြေရှင်းတဲ့နည်းလမ်းပဲ။

အဲ့နောက်တော့ကျွန်တော်တို့ကိုခွဲခြား ထားတဲ့ဒီတံတိုင်းတွေကိုဖြိုချဖို့အတွက်

I decided that it doesn't matter what happens to me.

ကျွန်တော့်ဘဝကို မြှပ်နှံလိုက်မယ်လို့ စိတ်ပိုင်းဖြတ်လိုက်ပါတယ်။

What really matters is how I deal with it.

နည်းလမ်းပေါင်းမျိုးစုံနဲ့ကြိုးစားခဲ့ပါတယ်။

And therefore, I decided to dedicate my life

ခရီးသွားလုပ်ငန်း၊မီဒီယာနဲ့ပညာရေး လိုမျိုးတွေပေါ့။ခရီးသွားလုပ်ငန်းက

to bringing down the walls that separate people.

I do so through many ways.

လို့တွေးမိမှာပေါ့။ ဖြစ်နိုင်ပါတယ်။

Tourism is one of them, but also media and education,

ခရီးသွားလုပ်ငန်းဟာဒီတံတိုင်းတွေဖြိုချဖို့ အကောင်းဆုံးရေရည်တည်တံ့တဲ့နည်းလမ်းပါ

and you might be wondering, really, can tourism change things?

မိတ်ဆွေသစ်တွေဖွဲ့ပြီးချိတ်ဆက်ခင်မင်တာဟာ ရေရှည်တည်တံ့ခိုင်မြဲတဲ့နည်းလမ်းတစ်ခုကို

Can it bring down walls? Yes.

Tourism is the best sustainable way to bring down those walls

ဖန်တီးဖို့အကောင်းဆုံးပါ။

၂၀၀၉ ခုနှစ်မှာ Mejdiဆိုတဲ့ခရီးသွား လုပ်ငန်းကိုပူးတွဲတည်ထောင်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။

and to create a sustainable way of connecting with each other

လူတွေကိုချိတ်ဆက်ပေးဖို့ရည်ရွယ်ချက်နဲ့ လုပ်ထားတဲ့လူမှုစီးပွားရေးတစ်ခုပေါ့

and creating friendships.

စကားမစပ် ဂျူးလူမျိုး သူငယ်ချင်း ၂ ယောက်နဲ့အတူတူလုပ်ခဲ့တာပါ

In 2009, I cofounded Mejdi Tours,

ကျွန်တော်တို့လုပ်ခဲ့တဲ့ပုံကတော့

a social enterprise that aims to connect people,

ဥပမာဂျေရုဆလင်မှာဆို ဧည့်လမ်းညွှန်၂ယောက်ရှိမယ်ဗျာ

with two Jewish friends, by the way,

and what we'll do, the model we did,

for example, in Jerusalem, we would have two tour guides,

one Israeli and one Palestinian, guiding the trips together,

telling history and narrative and archaeology and conflict

from totally different perspectives.

ပါလက်စတိုင်းဒုက္ခသည်စခန်းတစ်ခုကို သူတို့ကိုခေါ်သွားခဲ့တယ်

I remember running a trip together with a friend named Kobi --

အရမ်းကောင်းတဲ့အစားအသောက်တွေစားခဲ့ကြတယ်

Jewish congregation from Chicago, the trip was in Jerusalem --

စကားမစပ်ဒါကကျွန်တော့်အမေပါ။

and we took them to a refugee camp, a Palestinian refugee camp,

ဒါကတော့ maqluba လို့ခေါ်တဲ့ ပါလက်စတိုင်းစားစရာတစ်မျိုးပါ

အဓိပ္ပါယ်က ဇောက်ထိုးမိုးမျှော်ပါ။

and there we had this amazing food.

ထမင်းနဲ့ ကြက်သားကို ချက်ပြီး ဇောက်ထိုးလှန်တာပါ။

By the way, this is my mother. She's cool.

စားလို့အမြိန်ဆုံးထမင်းတစ်နပ်ပေါ့။

And that's the Palestinian food called maqluba.

ကျွန်တော်တို့ အတူ စားခဲ့တယ်။

အစ္စရေးပါလက်စတိုင်းက ဂီတသမားတွေရဲ့တီးဝိုင်းနဲ့

It means "upside-down."

You cook it with rice and chicken, and you flip it upside-down.

ဗိုက်လှုပ်အကတွေကခဲ့ကြတယ်။

It's the best meal ever.

ဘယ်လိုကရလည်းမသိရင် နောက်မှကျွန်တော်သင်ပေးပါမယ်

And we'll eat together.

Then we had a joint band, Israeli and Palestinian musicians,

ဒါပေမဲ့ခွဲခွာချိန်ရောက်တော့နှစ်ဘက်စလုံးက

and we did some belly-dancing.

မခွဲခွာချင်လို့ ငိုကြွေးကြတယ်

၃နှစ်ဆိုတဲ့အချိန်သာကုန်သွားတယ် အဲ့ဆက်ဆံရေးတွေကခိုင်မြဲနေဆဲပါ။

But when we left, both sides,

they were crying because they did not want to leave.

Three years later, those relationships still exist.

တိုးဘတ်စ်ပေါ်တက်စီးပြီး တစ်နေရာပြီးတစ်နေရာ၊တစ်ဟိုတယ်ကနေ

Imagine with me if the one billion people

နောက်တစ်ဟိုတယ်သွားတာမျိုး။

who travel internationally every year travel like this,

ကားပေါ်ကနေပဲတွေ့တဲ့လူတွေ၊ထုံးတမ်း ဓလေ့တွေကိုဓာတ်ပုံရိုက်ရုံသပ်သပ်မဟုတ်ဘဲ

not being taken in the bus from one side to another,

လူအချင်းချင်းချိတ်ဆက်ခင်မင်သွားတဲ့ ခရီးသွားခြင်းမျိုးပါ

from one hotel to another,

UKကမူစလင်အဖွဲ့တစ်ဖွဲ့ကိုရှေးရိုးစွဲ ဂျူးမိသားစုအိမ်ကိုခေါ်သွားခဲ့တာကို

taking pictures from the windows of their buses of people and cultures,

အမှတ်ရနေသေးတယ်။ သူတို့တွေ ပထမဆုံး

but actually connecting with people.

သောကြာနေ့ဥပုသ်ထွက်ညစာစားဝိုင်းမှာ hamin လို့ခေါ်တဲ့ စတူးလိုမျိုး

You know, I remember having a Muslim group from the U.K.

ဂျူးအစားအသောက်တစ်မျိုးကိုတူတူစားခဲ့ကြတယ်

going to the house of an Orthodox Jewish family,

and having their first Friday night dinners, that Sabbath dinner,

ညစာစားပြီးခဏအကြာမှာတော့ လွန်ခဲ့တဲ့နှစ်၁၀၀လောက်က

မြောက်အာဖရိက ကနေတူတူထွက်လာကြတဲ့ ဆွေမျိုးတွေပြန်ဆုံကြတဲ့အတိုင်း

and eating together hamin, which is a Jewish food, a stew,

ရင်းနှီးမှုတွေရသွားတာ သိလိုက်ကြတယ်။

just having the connection of realizing, after a while,

ဒါဟာ Facebook မှာတင်မယ့် profile ဓာတ်ပုံလည်းမဟုတ်ပါဘူး။သဘာဝ

that a hundred years ago, their families came out

ဘေးအန္တရာယ်ခရီးသွားလုပ်ငန်းလည်း မဟုတ်ပါဘူး၊

of the same place in Northern Africa.

ဒါဟာခရီးသွားလုပ်ငန်းရဲ့အနာဂတ်ပါ။

အခုကျွန်တော်နဲ့အတူတူခင်ဗျားတို့ရဲ့ ခရီးသွားပုံစံပြောင်းလဲပစ်ဖို့ဖိတ်ခေါ်ပါတယ်
