I'm a tourism entrepreneur and a peacebuilder,

but this is not how I started.

When I was seven years old, I remember watching television

and seeing people throwing rocks,

皆が石を投げているのを見て

and thinking, this must be a fun thing to do.

So I got out to the street and threw rocks,

そこで 私は表に出て 石を投げました

not realizing I was supposed to throw rocks at Israeli cars.

本来 イスラエルの車に向けて 石を投げるべきだったのですが

Instead, I ended up stoning my neighbors' cars. (Laughter)

近所の車に 石をぶつけてしまいました（笑）

They were not enthusiastic about my patriotism.

私の愛国主義は 感心されませんでした

This is my picture with my brother.

これは 兄と私の写真です

This is me, the little one, and I know what you're thinking:

小さい方が私です きっと こうお思いでしょう

"You used to look cute, what the heck happened to you?"

「昔はかわいかったのに どうしちゃったんだい？」

But my brother, who is older than me,

私のこの兄は

was arrested when he was 18,

18歳のときに逮捕され

taken to prison on charges of throwing stones.

投石の罪で刑務所に入れられました

He was beaten up when he refused to confess that he threw stones,

石を投げたことを認めなかったため 彼は暴行を受け

and as a result, had internal injuries

内臓に損傷を負い

that caused his death soon after he was released from prison.

そのことが原因で 出所後すぐに亡くなりました

I was angry, I was bitter,

私は怒りに駆られ 憤慨し

and all I wanted was revenge.

復讐を心に誓いました

But that changed when I was 18.

でも18歳のとき転機が訪れます

I decided that I needed Hebrew to get a job,

就職のため ヘブライ語を学ぼうと

and going to study Hebrew in that classroom

ヘブライ語の学校に通い

was the first time I ever met Jews who were not soldiers.

そこで 初めて 兵士ではないユダヤ人に会いました

And we connected over really small things, like the fact that I love country music,

本当にささやかなことですが パレスチナ人には珍しく

which is really strange for Palestinians.

カントリー音楽好きなことなどもあり 私たちは仲良くなりました

But it was then that I realized also that we have a wall of anger,

ただ そのとき初めて 二人の間には壁があることに気付きました

of hatred and of ignorance that separates us.

怒り 憎悪 無知という壁が 私たちを隔てているのです

I decided that it doesn't matter what happens to me.

でも 私は思いました 自分の身に何が起こるかは重要ではなく

What really matters is how I deal with it.

本当に大事なのは 私が それにどう向き合うかだと

And therefore, I decided to dedicate my life

ですから 私は人生をかけて

to bringing down the walls that separate people.

人々を隔てるこの壁を 崩そうと決めました

I do so through many ways.

以来 様々な方法で 取り組んでいます

Tourism is one of them, but also media and education,

観光も その一つですし メディアや教育もあります

and you might be wondering, really, can tourism change things?

きっと こうお思いでしょう 「観光で何かを変えられるのか？

Can it bring down walls? Yes.

壁が崩せるのか？」 ―答えはイエスです

Tourism is the best sustainable way to bring down those walls

観光こそ 最も安定して これらの壁を打ち崩し

and to create a sustainable way of connecting with each other

お互いを結びつけて友情を培う 持続可能な方法を

and creating friendships.

創れるものなのです

In 2009, I cofounded Mejdi Tours,

2009年 私はMejdi Toursを 共同設立しました

a social enterprise that aims to connect people,

人々を結びつけることを目的とした 社会事業で

with two Jewish friends, by the way,

ユダヤ人の友だち二人と作りました

and what we'll do, the model we did,

私たちがしようとしているのは― 具体例で言えば

for example, in Jerusalem, we would have two tour guides,

エルサレムで イスラエル人とパレスチナ人各１名の

one Israeli and one Palestinian, guiding the trips together,

ツアーガイド２名で 一緒に観光案内をするというものです

telling history and narrative and archaeology and conflict

二人は 全く異なる観点から 歴史や言い伝え

from totally different perspectives.

考古学や紛争を語ります

I remember running a trip together with a friend named Kobi --

以前に コビーという友人と 一緒にツアーをしました

Jewish congregation from Chicago, the trip was in Jerusalem --

シカゴからのユダヤ人の方々を エルサレムで案内したのですが

and we took them to a refugee camp, a Palestinian refugee camp,

皆さんを パレスチナの 難民キャンプにお連れし

and there we had this amazing food.

そこで このような ご馳走を食べました

By the way, this is my mother. She's cool.

ちなみに こちらは母です 素敵でしょう

And that's the Palestinian food called maqluba.

これは パレスチナの料理 「マクルーバ」です

It means "upside-down."

「ひっくり返す」という意味で

You cook it with rice and chicken, and you flip it upside-down.

お米と鶏肉を調理し 最後にひっくり返すのです

It's the best meal ever.

最高の料理で

And we'll eat together.

皆で一緒に食べます

Then we had a joint band, Israeli and Palestinian musicians,

そして イスラエルとパレスチナの 合同バンドが演奏し

and we did some belly-dancing.

ベリーダンスをしました

If you don't know any, I'll teach you later.

ご存知のない方 あとで教えて差し上げますよ

But when we left, both sides,

そして 私たちが帰る日には

they were crying because they did not want to leave.

双方とも泣いていました 離れたくなかったのです

Three years later, those relationships still exist.

３年経っても まだこの関係は続いています

Imagine with me if the one billion people

想像してください 毎年 海外旅行をする―

who travel internationally every year travel like this,

10億人の人たちが こんな風に旅をするんです

not being taken in the bus from one side to another,

ただ バスに乗って 名所をまわり

from one hotel to another,

ホテルを移動し

taking pictures from the windows of their buses of people and cultures,

車窓から 人々や文化の 写真を撮るのではなく

but actually connecting with people.

実際に人と結びつくのです

You know, I remember having a Muslim group from the U.K.

以前 イギリスからの イスラム教徒のグループを

going to the house of an Orthodox Jewish family,

正統派ユダヤ教徒の家に お連れして

and having their first Friday night dinners, that Sabbath dinner,

そこの家族と 安息日の夕食を共にしました

and eating together hamin, which is a Jewish food, a stew,

ハミンというユダヤ料理のシチューを 一緒に食べました

just having the connection of realizing, after a while,

しばらくして 100年前 彼らの祖先もまた

that a hundred years ago, their families came out

北アフリカの同じ地方から やって来たのだと気づき

of the same place in Northern Africa.

絆を深めたのでした
